I am definitely going to have to get this game. I remember playing the original all night with my best friend. It was so good, I didnt even think about food during that play session.

I can't wait either. I wondeer if they'll do another Gun too. That game was a great idea with some flawed execution.

Gameplay is exactly like GTA4. Great. Will this have multiplayer? If not I'll be disappointed!

May 18th, no pushbacks please.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeak...why wouldnt they apply multiplayer? Ugh. :banghead:

Wait actually you're incorrect. I just searched and there will be multiplayer, its just been hush on what it will be. April 5th they are supposed to reveal it.

Rockstar has announced that it will reveal multiplayer details for Red Dead Redemption during the week of April 5.

That’s the week after next, in case you were wondering or don’t own a calender.
“We believe this game sets a new benchmark for open world multiplayer gaming and are very excited to be talking about it properly,” said Rockstar, “[So] get your wild bunch ready”.
Whoopow range riders!
Also worth noting, is that PAX East attendees are getting hands-on time with the title at the Rockstar booth as we speak.
Lucky bastards.
The game is slated for release May 18 in the US and May 21 in the UK for PS3 and Xbox 360.

[QUOTE]John Marston:
* Marston is the only character you play as
* Marston's health recovers
** Marston's health is represented by the amount of blood on the screen.
* There is some customization in Marston's appearance
** Various outfits can be unlocked or bought
** Marston may be able to get his hair cut
** There are accessories that Marston is able to wear for a gameplay benefit
*** The only confirmed one is a bandanna, which helps Marston evade capture if he commits a crime while wearing one
* Owns a campsite. This is the saving system
** Can set up camp anywhere in the wilderness
*** Can upgrade the campsite from a simple fire and poking stick to more luxurious conditions, such as a tent
**** Upgrades can play a part in gameplay.
* Marston has an inventory
** His inventory has at least three categories: Consumables, Kit and Provisions.
*** His kit seems to be his equipment. What his Consumables and Provisions are is unknown. A guess would be Consumables are things meant to be bought and sold and Provisions are things that he has a finite amount of.
* Marston controls and feels very similar to Niko, though he moves a little faster and a little more fluidly
** In combat scenarios Marston runs at the push of the analog rather than walking as usual.
* Marston can drink in saloons and bars and can get so drunk he passes out for a few hours
* Marston can sleep with prostitutes
* To an extent, weapons and ammunition are represented on the character model.
* Carries a journal which lists current challenges.
* Cannot swim. Water kills Marston.

The World and Everything In It
* The game map is a large and expansive world
** The World is, in total, roughly twice the size of San Andreas [source]
*** The World is split into three large regions, each larger than GTA IV's Liberty City [source]
**** Port Elizabeth is the northern-most region, featuring large mountains, forests and snow
**** New Austin is on the border (on the American side) and features grassy plains
**** Nuevo Paraiso is in Mexico and is the southern-most region, featuring dry, dusty deserts
** There are a variety of settlements and towns
** There is a working commerce system
** Caves and mine shafts are confirmed
** Weather is present.
*** Rainy weather can form puddles, while exceptionally dry whether can leave the ground dusty
*** Dust devils occasionally kick up
** Crescent moons have been seen, leading to a possibility of moon cycles
** There are rivers, lakes, ponds and waterfalls
** Full day and night system
*** One full cycle = 25 minutes
** There is an active railroad
** Every building is enterable
*** No load times during transition from exterior to interior or vice versa
* There is an active ecosystem within the game
** There are forty animals in the game
** Every animal has its own AI
*** If a pack animal is alone it might run as you approach, but if you approach a pack they will attack
** The predators will hunt the prey, including humans
** Vultures will eat the remains of fallen foes
* NPCs populate the world and behave realistically
Each NPC follows their own routine and way of a life. For example,
one spend all day working in a blacksmith, then at closing time head
off to the saloon for a couple drinks before going home.

NPCs will converse with each other
You can converse with NPCs yourself

NPCs can hold grudges. A man you beat up in the saloon may come back later with a gun.

NPC houses can be broken into and robbed

NPCs store possessions in boxes and trunks in their houses.

NPC towns can be wiped out and made into ghost towns

Ghost towns will revive in 2-3 in-game days

In the wilderness rarely a minute passes without seeing some indication of an NPC

NPCs play an important part of free roaming, through random encounters

NPCs can be found doing a large assortment of things, from ambushes to gunfights to hostage scenarios to simple things like sitting around a campfire telling stories of Marston's earlier exploits

Its possible to join a group of NPCs around a campfire and hang out and enjoy a narrative set-piece, but theres also the risk of them being dangerous bandits.

Allied NPCs are marked with blue markers on the minimap

Enemy NPCs are marked with red markers on the mini map

Lawmen are marked with a red or blue marker (depending on your current standing) but with a white star in the middle

Gangs have their own markers as well, which lets you track them down

Wiping out a gang has no bearing on your Wanted level

The corpses of NPCs can be looted

A wide variety of NPC personalities, including savage cannibals and killers

NPCs will offer your random missions

All NPC encounters depend on the time of day, location, your Honor and Fame and what you're wearing

Indians are present, though not uncivilized.

Travel
Marking a way point destination draws a path on the mini map
There are also arrow signs pointing towards various destinations
Three main methods of transport: Horseback, stagecoaches and trains
Passing stagecoaches can be flagged down.
Stagecoaches and trains allow you to take a nap while going on the destination, allowing you to bypass the trip time.
Horses have personalities
Wild horses have to be lassoed, broken and saddled before riding
If you're unsuccessful at this the horse will buck you and you can get dragged
Any horse that isn't yours or hasn't been yours for very long will be a little wilder and more difficult to control
A horse thats unfamiliar to you won't respond to a whistle call. A horse you've spent time with will come to you when you whistle, and will even buck off a thief.
When dismounting a horse you have to tie it up at a post. If you don't it will continue to follow you.
Horses have their own health/energy meter, which is Blue and on the Left side of the mini map
Spurring a horse too much will agitate it enough to buck you
The horse will automatically jump over any obstacle it can
Riding a horse in rough terrain is slower than riding on a trail or road
If you ride too fast in the rough brush it can get agitated and buck you
Theres also a slim chance it can injure itself and become lame
No matter where you are, you can summon your trained horse with a whistle
If your horse dies and you got more than a few minutes without a steed the game will present an opportunity to get one
From a standstill, turning a horse around takes around 10 seconds.
Besides train and stagecoach, you can also fast travel from your campsite to any town you have visited.

Combat:
Weapons are period accurate
Gunplay
Uses cover system similar to GTA IV
Can snipe while in cover
Can blind fire while in cover
Guns are categorized by the following criteria:
Category, Damage, Fire Rate, Range and Overall Score
Ammo is based not on the model of weapon but on the category (Shotgun, Revolver, Rifle, etc)
Guns have limited ammo capacity
Guns have lower accuracy due to the time period
Gunplay mimics that of Western movies, including exaggerated

GOBB

Side missions:
* Bounty Hunting
** Initiated by tearing a Wanted Poster from the wall
** Bounty is marked by a Red Skull on the mini map
** Most have a Dead or Alive option, with bringing them Alive netting a larger reward
** Incapacitate and hog tie a bounty to bring them in alive
** Kill them to collect the "Dead" reward
*** You have to bring in a piece of clothing or evidence from the dead.
** The more bounty missions you do the higher the rewards get and the more difficult they get.
** Showing a preference for Bounty Hunting missions after Treasure Hunting ones results in the game offering more of them.
* Treasure Hunting
** Initiated by simply searching
** Use a roughly drawn map to find a landmark near the treasure
** Search under stones for the treasure
** Can stumble upon a snake if you upturn the wrong stone
** Treasure can include gold bars and additional maps
** Showing a preference for Treasure Hunting missions after Bounty Hunting ones results in the game offering more of them.
* Poker
* Blackjack
* Five-Finger Fillet
** Consists of pressing the face button flashed on screen quickly and accurately at an increasing pace
* Horseshoes
* Deputy Patrol
** Patrol a town at night with the aide of a guard dog
* Bull Riding
** Initiated by lassoing a bull
* Mugging
* Burglary
** Involves entering an NPC's house and stealing their possessions.
* Cattle herding
* Hunting
** Furred animals can be skinned, feathered animals can be plucked
** Skinning leaves a mutilated carcass
** Skinning is done off camera, though it can be heard
** Hunting all forty animals nets a reward outfit
** Can purchase bait for use in hunting
* Plant gathering
** Initiated by picking plants and flowers
** Plants can be sold to doctors to make medicine
* Bird Sharpshooting
** Initiated by shooting a vulture
** Prompts to shoot the rest of the pack within the time limit
** Builds up fame
** Ascending levels
* Bank Robbing
** Initiated by having a gun drawn in a bank
* Dueling
** Can't duel everybody (like old women), but you can duel other gunslingers

Full List of Confirmed Weapons:
* Colt Police Positive
* Smith & Wesson Schofield No. 3
* Le Mat Revolver

Multiplayer:
* Online, described as "Players charging around on horses and stagecoaches and trains, shooting each other" by Dan Houser

“Read Dead Redemption has an extensive multiplayer mode. Instead of a lobby, it begins with a free-roaming multiplayer mode where players can run freely through the game world. They can form gangs with other players they meet there, and this transition can be computer controlled bandits.”

Included Multiplayer Modes:

Gold Rush - Collect as many bags of gold as possible
Deathmatch - Kill as many players as you can
Hold Your Own - Capture the Flag style game using Loot Bags

Red Dead Redemption will be released May 18th in North America and May 21st in Europe. When Rockstar reveal further official multiplayer details next week, we’ll keep you posted.

Beating the game doesn't take long. I went through it three times for the ending achievements. Takes a while because after you beat it once the dedication is gone.

Yup you're right. Soon as you told me that I got the 20,000. Highest multiplier was 8. 2 away from the other achievement. I figured if i can upgrade or max out the time power. I'll have a chance to get that one as well. 11 left...

1. Multiplicator achievement
2. The Colourist achievement
3. The Sharpshooter achievement
4. The Duellist achievement
5. The Hoarder achievement
6. The Completionist achievement
7. The Family/The Egomanic achievement
8. The Concierge achievement
9. The Con Artist achievement
10. The Gargoyle achievement

Yo do you have any expressions books? I think I'm missing some. When I pull up my expression tabs and click on an expression to get a list of them. I see blank spots. I know I need one expression like Worship which is needed to open up one of those Demon Doors. Plus it'll speed me up to getting the Completionist achievement altho maxing out the abilities will be time consuming.

Also finding all 10 of Murgoes statues that has to be down on my own or can someone send me them? I got about 4 so far. The same with collecting the dyes in murgo's magical items. Are these two I gotta do on my own?

The one I cant get is The Duellist. I try and try and try. Shyt should be worth more than 10g.

I think I have all of the expressions you can get through books. Some expressions can only be earned by reaching a certain level of corruption, good, and evil. So if you have a good character, you only have the good expressions. To get the other expressions, you have to turn your character evil(or visa versa)

To turn your character evil from being good quickly, just kill about 15+ people and raise all of your prices to 100% in Bowerstone Market(will take a little waiting, but is the fast path to corruption). To become good, donate something like a million or two gold to one of the bums or guards. If that doesn't get you all the way good, keep repeating the process. Let me know if you're going the donation route because I will hook you up with even more gold.

Also finding all 10 of Murgoes statues that has to be down on my own or can someone send me them? I got about 4 so far. The same with collecting the dyes in murgo's magical items. Are these two I gotta do on my own?

Those can't be gifted. You have to find them throughout the See the Future expansion. Back when I was trying to find them, I found all but 4 of them and used YouTube to get the rest.

The one I cant get is The Duellist. I try and try and try. Shyt should be worth more than 10g.

That's easily the hardest achievement to get. When I got it, I was just swinging my sword around in the air randomly. I wasn't even trying for it. You're not kidding, it should definitely be worth some more gamer points.

Cool i figured that with trophies. Yo i donated like 2 mil to that church or monk temple. He keeps saying the sun isnt shining bright enough but thank you anyway. Is he pulling a sham on me or is there a certain time to donate? I feel like I was bamboozled! I'm like the sun bright as f*ck outside. This douche keeps saying wait for the zenith.

I gotta search online to see what expressions I need for the Complionist. I know you dont need all of them but i'm sure some you do. I figured to get 100% evil (was messing around yesterday). I raised the dead using that power then killed people in the town market. Guards, woman, dudes. I got a new expression but I cut my xbox off so it didnt save. Just wanted to see what would have happened. :oldlol:

New info released...

Rockstar has announced plans to release free downloadable content for upcoming Wild West 'em-up Red Dead Redemption, with the first pack adding co-op gameplay.

The 'Outlaw To The End' pack, which will release in the weeks following the game's launch on May 21st, will add six new multiplayer missions that see 2-4 players storming enemy strongholds, plus new achievements and trophies.

"Multiplayer in Red Dead Redemption offers players a whole new way to encounter the massive open world we've created, but we felt the experience would not be complete without co-op game play," said Rockstar's Sam Houser.

With these missions, we wanted to create new ways for players to share in the experience of engaging with this amazing landscape."

Rockstar also confirmed that a further two add-on packs will be released later in the year.

Ben Feder, CEO of Rockstar's parent company Take Two, said last month that he expects Red Dead Redemption's DLC "to innovate around the DLC business model", telling the world that the company had been given a "tremendous insight" into DLC thanks to GTA IV's Episodes From Liberty City add-ons.

Consider yourself innovated, DLC business model.

Red Dead Redemption launches on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on May 18th. I expect it'll be one of the best games you'll play this year.

DLC that costs money is pretty lame. Same deal with Hollywood releasing terrible PG13 movies for the masses, and then the "real director's cut with deleted scenes" comes out on DVD, when that was the original movie in the first place.

First DLC is free. The 2 add ons are unknowns. Keep in mind Rockstar is putting this game out. They did GTA4 with 2 new add ons which were basically 2 new games, achievements, multiplayer.

As someone who didn't have his system online from the get go, I definitely understand the frustration of DLC, even that of the free variety. Especially in a case like this where it's released on the same day as the game. It's not as if this wasn't in development and couldn't have been packaged with the game.

Either way, I'm about as psyched for this game as I've been for any in a while. I have Jury Duty on the 19th, so no work, and the game is released on the 18th. I'm actually looking forward to leaving work early that day, picking up my copy, playing late into the night knowing I can sleep through the jury video for the fourth time. And hoping I get let go at lunch like I have in the past just to sit home and play.

I can see myself laying story mode more than once because you can be a good guy or bad guy. I want to experience both. Cant wait to see how this multiplayer setup is also. So much to do in this game. Wonder when the list of achievements will drop.

Jesus...This game is a dream come true. My favorite things so far that I've read are:

-Map is 3x larger than San Andreas (This is just unreal...)
-Multiplayer actually looks AMAZING, not just acceptable. Usually epic games lose out on multiplayer on certain aspects
-You can build on your reputation like in Fable by doing different tasks
-Details from landscape to actual gameplay like tieing up a person, shooting their legs so they can't escape, plus the graphics, fluidity, etc.

I am definitely going to get this. I was thinking of only having one free roam game and it was going to be Assassins Creed but this one definitely takes the cake.

I think my only concern at this point is there will be so much that it won't be focused. That I'll never know what I want to do next.

As a completionist type myself, I ran into a bit of that with GTA, like I never wanted to blow off the stupid cousin for a game of darts because I was afraid I'd miss out on something. That game got much better once I learned that you could turn the phone off.

Yeah I think this game will end up being overwheling when it comes to missions. That you dont know what to do first. As you mentioned GTA4 was like that. Get text messages, voice msgs, phone calls, different mission icons on the map. But I enjoyed it tho.

Also liked the part where they said if you are free roaming checking out the landscape, sight seeing that you could potentially get attacked by a wild animal or bandits. I like the sudden surprise of one minute enjoying the view and next you gotta pull out the gun and lay someone or something down. :pimp:

I read or someone told me they read, that you can let a horse run full out and it takes like 45 mins real time to go across the map. I just hope it doesn't take forever to get where you're going. I am sure it will, because you often had to drive forever IN missions in GTA. I hope there is a 'warp' option like there was in cabs 'Y' button for 360....but not sure what that would apply to in this game, maybe trains and stage coaches.

Wait actually you're incorrect. I just searched and there will be multiplayer, its just been hush on what it will be. April 5th they are supposed to reveal it.
i think it would be so awesome to have a western themed multiplayer game where u could become anything u wanted as a career...cowboy/rustler, lawman, outlaw, blacksmith, judge, saloon bartender, etc.

i won't get RDR unless it does have online multiplayer.

:bowdown:

It wont have as many game modes as GTA4 did. But it wont be you sitting in a lobby waiting to play with people. You start off in free roam mode to do numerous activities. I believe some things are computer controlled. And unlike free roam in GTA4 where you just roamed the city with no objective, challenge? Here you have tasks and challenges you can complete. So free roam isnt just running around on horseback the entire time. Not that you cant do it but there is actually things to do as well. Which will attract more people. Then you have the organized game modes you can join. Cant remember how many there were tho. But you have your deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag type game which instead of flag its gold bag I believe.

Also during free roam you can end up joining a posse, starting your own or playing with a group of friends. I'll search for articles that are more in depth with what you can do/become. I think you can be an outlaw on the run from sherrifs too.

Free DLC which is co-op multiplayer (http://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/article/5211/first_red_dead_redemption_dlc_details_-_the_outlaws_to_the_end_co-op_mission_pack_coming_in_june_as_free_download.ar ticle)

GTA4 is my favorite game on 360 of all time. This plays NOTHING like GTA4. Its too arcady like Saints Row if you ever played that. The gameplay and feel is nothing like the videos showed. Not sure what that is about. Shooting is wack. Cant think of what its called red eye site or something. Should have did away with it entirely. Makes the game unrealistic. Player movement is stiff and retarded. Not much fluidity. Riding horses is the most difficult thing in the game by far. Hard to manuever it. Better off walkin to your destination or riding a train. The good thing is the dialogue in the game. Cut scenes are movie like. But eh so far not much left to be desired. Dont expect GTA4 the Western version. They changed alot of stuff I guess to make it different.

Multiplayer is weird as hell. Confusing and choas. I randomly shot a buzzard and next thing I know I'm throw into some type of gun/shooting challenge game. Couldnt get out. I get on a horse and its someone elses so I get shot at by people until I die basically. No where to hide. I'm used to automatics but this game is oldschool. No shyt western guns duh, but they really blow.

I'd give this a 7 out of 10. The fact I'm hearing posting and not playing should tell u something.

Oh the game freezes too alot when you wander the plains and explore. Maybe a patch is in the works but some things are glitchy as hell. you'd think pushing it back they'd put out a finished product. Wth Rockstar, I had faith in you! :(

The failure rate is looking better and better for the 360's. I won't lie, I'm on my third unit but since I've had my Elite version I've had zero issues - had it going on three years now.

The 360/PS3 debate has been beaten to def, with the biggest buying factor being online features/usage/playability. If you're looking to get the most bang for your buck in this gaming generation and play online, 360 is the obvious choice. If you're looking to just sit back and casually play a game here and there, I can see the logic in going in the PS3 direction.

I'm going to get a PS3 eventually. There are a handful of exclusives I'm itching to play.

Different folks, different strokes. I just can't get into PC gaming. There's something about sitting on the sofa with a standard controller in your hand, experiencing the next-gen of gaming with that same-as-it-always-was traditional feeling.

Looking at a PC all day working, the last thing I want to do is invest 2-4 more hours looking at another 'puter screen.

I own a ps3, I highly reccomend however if you don't need a blu ray player and your a fan of online gaming then go for xbox. Project Natal looks promising on the 360 and right now 360 is a lot more affordable then the playstation.

I picked up a copy last night from walmart and got in a couple of hours of game play. This game just looks massive!!! In just two hours I, had to fend off a rabbit attack, herd some cows, caught and tamed wild horses, collected two bounties, killed about 100 baddies and won $100.00 in a poker game.

Anyone who has played GTA 4 will be comfortable with the controls. One notable exception is the riding controls. I kept trying to ride my horse like I would drive a car in GTA. It takes some getting used to. The voice acting is great, except for John Marston. Its the same guy who did the voice of Johnny in The Lost and The Damned. The guy just tries to hard and it comes off as fake and forced. The graphics look great. Just as good, if not better then GTA.

The targeting and cover systems all seem to work well, which is always a concern with rockstar games. The story, so far seems a little fuzzy, but thats to be expected in the first few hours of the game. Cant wait to get off work and play some more. I have a feeling this is going to be a very long next few days for my wife, Its going to be like Mass Effect 2 all over again.

What is the cheat situation for this game. I will admit that with GTA 4, I wasn't interested in always outrunning the cops and getting paint jobs on my car, so I would dial up my cheat to lose my wanted level. Obviously don't expect him to be walking around with a cell phone, so how have they addressed that, as well as contacting people you meet throughout the game.

I played single player for a lil bit. Just before I got to a real mission. The begginning is getting you familiar with the controls. Shooting, riding horse, designated places. Havent gone back to it since. Taking my time.

Weird i waited so long for the game now i'm being all picky about when to play. :oldlol:

Multiplayer folks shot at me. I ran into a posse and all I heard was get him. You guys should try shooting innocent people, sometimes sheriffs or authority figures. Its fun holding down a house and killing the people trying to capture you.

Map is huge.

I've run into 2 errors tho. Multiplayer I've been booted off into single player. Unsure if it was server related or what. An error message popped up and off to single player I went. When I got killed and respawned? My players gun was invisible. He was holding a gun but the gun didnt show. Then not too long after that I got the error message and was booted.

Thorpesaurous
05-18-2010, 10:55 PM
I played for almost four hours tonight, and did almost nothing. Probably three missions tops, and they were the mandatory ones to open up the map. After that I spent hours just riding around on a horse. I covered the entire perimeter of accessible map, and probably the bulk of the interior too. I killed tons of wildlife, found an assload of fauna. Did a few random pop up missions.
Bought a bunch of crap I don't know how to use or why yet. Watched a rediculous movie. Helped a sheriff with a gang, then got caught up in a fire fight trying to return a safe to a bank, and for some reason an eyewitness didn't like seeing me kill a bunch of bank robbing bandits, and I had to pay off a bounty at the train station. There was more than enough money once I cracked the safe since they weren't going to take it back anyway, to cover it though.

Still not used to the shooting. The L2 to target, R2 to fire thing is just different enough from GTA, especially when on horseback, that I find myself putting the brakes on the horse. But I'm getting used to it. And tapping X to get the horse up to speed than holding it to lock it in is a little weird as a mechanic, but it's already starting to feel natural.

It's absolutely stunning to look at, the day to night cycle, the sunset and night sky is actually worth waiting for in certain locations. Incredible audio work too. The sound effects are awesome, and the surround mix is incredible.

So far, it's both awe inspiring in it's quality, and a lot of fun, and I haven't even done anything yet. So I'm pretty happy. I read it's gets a little tedious in the middle with the errand missions, but whatever for now.

I played one game online and didn't do well, but I had no idea what I was doing or who was who. It was free roam, and I thought we were going after a gang hideout, and then the got shot me in the back. It's not my thing, but I could see getting into it a little.

Haven't had any errors so far on the PS3 version. I've beeen doing mostly single player and honestly like a few people have said, I haven't really done much of the real missions. I watched the movie in Armidillo, so ridiculous. Right after I got out of the theater there was a gang of bandits shooting up the town. I managed to kill all of them. After popping a few with dead eye they started running :lol . It felt like I was in a movie or something. I walked out behind the last guy and blew him off his horse then started opeing on them all. So much fun. Anybody else manage to take down the group that terrorizes the town? Also the finishing moves when you're up close are pretty awesome. Some guy robbed the general store and it said kill him or try and take him alive. I chased him for a bit and slowed him with a shot in teh leg and when I got close he turned around on me and started shooting. I was so close that I grabbed him and put the gun under his chin and blew his brains out! Pretty awesome stuff. Tons of fun so far and just like Thorp, I've done pretty much nothing in teh game.

I haven't seen any real tech problems. Character went a little ghosty when I got caught up in some brush once, but I think it was just because of the way the camera got caught up behind him, so he goes semi clear to give you a view. I have gotten caught in stuff like that a couple times.

I watched that movie too. Rediculous. But there were no bandits in the town when I was there. I wonder if they're the same group that stole the safe from the bank. Because I found those guys in the southwestern part of the map, and after killing them had to return the safe back to Armadillo. Which I screwed up because someone saw me kill them. They marked the eyewitness on the map, but I didn't get to him in time. I don't know what I would need to do to him. Anyway, they put a 20 dollar bounty on me, and you can just pay it off yourself at any trainstation.

This game is sick!! Like most, I have not done much of anything. I have shot a bunch of animals. I was walking around and some dude asked for my help, then tried to steal my horse. I shot him in the back for trying to rob me and got a $40 bounty on me. That is a bit weird but oh well. I helped the Sherrif, that's pretty much it and when I was riding around I found some farmer trying to rescue his daughter from a gang. A bull was walking around and kept charging me after the fight. :oldlol: A lady in town lost her son, so I am going off trying to get him back. I love this game so far. No idea about the majority of the items yet...I sold all my pelts etc.

For anyone playing the 360 version, when riding a horse, you hit whatever button (X I think) to get the horse to go faster, is there a button to maintain that speed? I know you can hold A to ride the same speed as a companion, but when I am just riding around, I kick my horse to get rolling, but he always slows down to a trot after a while. So I just have to keep kicking him (which I thought the tutorial said was a speed burst).

I LOVE the music and sound effects in this game. I was a little worried that the music would be bland since unlike GTA there are no cars which means no radios, but the way the music kind of automatically compliments whatever you are doing is great.

you have to press it in medium intervals a bunch of us were playing it last night and everyone was mashing the button and thats no bueno. if you just keep taping it every 4-5 seconds you can go fast for a long time with no "overheating" the horse

You're not alone with that problem. It's been happening to me, and pretty much everyone else too. The private free roam lobbies will still work, and you can still rank up. I'm sure Rockstar is already working on a remedy for the problems the game has had(characters going invisible, connection problems).

Have you played a match of Gold Rush yet, Gobb? I played a match of it once last night and it was a blast.

I havent tried any game modes yet. I wanted to do that right now but I cant connect worth a damn. Unless I can go thru private free roam lobby and do it? Unsure.

Just did some single player free roaming killing animals. Wolves tried to attack me on horse. Had to lay em down! Wonder how hard it is to kill a Grizzly Bear. Wonder if your horse can get killed by animal attacks. Also wondering when i see birds circling in the air does that mean something is dead.

I'm going to try a game mode right now tho. See if shyt works.

Not even going to bother win online play for awhile until Rockstar gets settled in. I'm having a blast on single player mode though.

Right now I'm just trying to make money. Best way seems to be to run bounties and bring the guy in alive, which is relatively easy. You can also make quick money if you're good at poker. The cpu players are predictable and easy to read once you learn their style.

Finally played a free for all shootout. That was fun. I guess auto aim isnt disabled for multiplayer game mode matches? I didnt do bad. I was next to the last man standing at the start of the match. Killed 4 dudes in a row. The thing about auto aim is you can kill from quite a distance. Like I was getting shot and had no idea where from. Some cat up top inside a barn was picking people off. Maybe there are options I have to check that I can change.

There is so much with this game. Not sure what to do, where to start, what to look at/for. This is a game you are getting your $$$$$ worth. Lookin at leaderboards some are taking this a bit serious. :oldlol:

I gotta see if modded controllers are helpful here. One of the dudes on my friends list has one. He has 232 kills 53 assists. But also 232 deaths. Unsure how his modded controller is aiding him. Maybe with auto aim on it doesnt.

Anyone join a posse yet to see what its like? In free mode i chased some guy and killed him off his horse. Felt bad. But i was annoyed that when i joined free mode i tried lookin at options and here it is some gun happy cowboy is killing me. Like f*ck off for a second geeze. GTA4 u had an option in free mode to set prefererances if u want to be killed or not. Anyone had an idea if thats available? I keep getting booted off the multiplayer when i try to check stuff.

I am sure it is but really only shows with exclusives. The ps3 architecture is unique, 360 is basically a pc lite. Devs for multiplatform games are only going to invest so much into the ps3. You do not want to invest too much money and not get a return. Most multiplatform games look better on 360 compared to ps3.

I can confirm for I think Gobb? that your horse can die from wild animals. I ran into a pack of wolves and was just checking them out with the camera and they took my horse down in seconds :(. I was stuck for a minute or 2 without a mount, but atleast I got sweet revenge on the little bastards. I've played so much since I've had it but still never done anything really. Theres so much shit to do that I dont even want to start with the missions really. I decided to go into town and shoot the place up before turning off the ps3 for the night. I ended up with an 1125$ bounty on me and held up in the bank for a few minutes. Eventually there were too many lawmen and I was gunned down :lol but it was really fun I have to say.

I had wolves take down a horse on me too. The horse I'm on now I used to cover the whole map, and I got a notice that I "broke" him. Now he comes faster when I whistle, and is allegedly more responsive. I guess it just requires some amount of time on one horse.

You can shoot the birds out of the sky too. Feathers can be sold. And I grabbed a ton of plants, thinking I'd be able to jump from one level to the next in the fauna collector section of the journal, but the ones you collect prior to being required don't count, so if you're running around, you may want to leave them so they'll be easier to find when you need them.

I can't wait to kill a bear either.

This game is crack (playing on the X360). I'm only playing the single player mode. This game as got me wanting to watch a ton of western movies. I love it.

Gotta love the level of detail Rock Star puts in these types of games. It's a homage to all the great westerns and TV shows (man, it's got me really wishing Deadwood was still on the air). Top notch voice acting, and memorable characters.

Pretty wild how sometimes in towns, dudes will be seen dragging out whores from bars, and start stabbing them to death or beating them up. If your quick, you can drop em dead before they kill them.

Hunting in the game is really fun.

I'm playing the game as a hero. More satisfying IMHO. I like increasing the honour, and fame ratings.

If you're really quick you can disarm them by shooting their weapon away, then using your lasso to rope them and hogtie them.

I'm trying to play the hero role as well, and only kill people when I must. Once my honor and fame are maxed out, then I'll start the pillage and plunder!

I am sure most know this, but for those who don't, fame grows regardless of being a hero or not. So you don't have to be good to be famous. Apparently townsfolk will cheer your arrival if you are very famous and good, or run and hide when you enter a town with low honor and high fame.

Yes. Go to your options and change your multiplayer aim from Normal to Expert. I wouldn't recommend it though, most on RDR use Normal and it could cost you a lot of kills if others had the auto-aim and you don't.

I believe so.

That would explain why some guys were killing me super quick tonight. Also why this one guy who was camping on the outskirts of a game mode was picking people off so fast as you got near. I know when I first played RDR the auto aim in the match was on. I could take my shotgun or whatever gun it was and hit a person long range from afar because I was locked on him.

Atleast in GTA4 you either played with everyone that had it disabled or it on. Here? Its mix n match until you unlock the game modes that disabled it for everyone.

Also if i had to make a complaint its changing weapons on the fly. GTA4 you could switch it quick. Say you had an AK47 and in a shoot out you get closer to the guy, you can switch to a shotgun and blast them. Here you gotta hit LB to pull up the option. By that time you're dead. Unless there is a way to switch weapons I didnt find out. Let me know. Cuz i was in a shootout with someone inside a building. I wanted to switch to my knife instead of trying to reload and cut his throat. I couldnt do it quick enough. :(

So as I was taking a stroll with my horse, I came across a lady who was being attacked by wolves. As I raced over to try and save her, I aimed my weapon and fired. Well, with the auto aim, it aimed directly in front of me on the gravel, and I ended up shooting my horse in the head. I'm actually really upset about it, because I became attached to my horse. I loved her. It's the only horse I've had in the game, and now she is gone. She was a beautiful brindle color, with a black tail and mane. I contemplated loading from a checkpoint, but ultimately decided against it because in life, accidents happen, and you must move on. I didn't skin her, just let her be. R.I.P. my friend.

I've done a couple of the damsel being attacked by coyotes missions too, and both times, I helped, took out the dogs, and then, because I had the gun drawn, she seemed to think I was gonna attack her or something, and freaked out running. I'm not sure what that did for my honor rating. I've also trampled on some people in need of help in the desert because I could hear them, and ran over to the dot, but my horse squashed them.

I like the collection stuff. I have to kill five coyotes with my knife next. Five birds from a moving train, and collect an herb that's now on an unavailable part of the map. I guess I did the herbs fast.

I also finally did a couple missions last night finally. Opened up the Armadillo sherriff, and purchased a save house there. I really love the way the map is laid out so far. A lot of access, you can go in a pretty straight line from one point to the next.

Anyone tried the Most Wanted thing yet? Kill some innocent people then sherriffs. After you hit $1,000 you are wanted. Game announces it to the entire public free roam. So they can come collect the money on your head or not. But if you stay alive under your Wanted level for 10mins then escape alive (losing your Wanted level, basically escaping the red circle radius to freedom) you unlock an achievement. I've come close twice playing by myself until some dbags from a posse takes me down. And I came close in a posse but somehow it glitches us all out of our camping spot and reset everything. Weird.

But many people along with sheriffs tried to take us down. Fun.

How many animals are there? I experienced the cougar and Bear today. Got jumped by a cougar pack (since when do they roll together) and stalking ass Bear from behind. Kinda scares u cause it comes outta nowhere. I was watching a Bear stalk a guy on horseback. I followed them then took it down.

There's a list of the animals. I haven't gone through it, but I know there's about 30(or a bit over) species. Getting jumped by the cougars is no fun. Those b*tches are tough.

level 12! so is it pretty easy/quick to rank up?
or have you really just not put it down yet

Its pretty easy to rank up in multiplayer. The best way to get xp is either clear gang hide outs in free roam or play free for all matches.

I tried that last night. Me and my posse held down the top floor of the saloon in armadillo. I ended up getting my bounty up to like 2.3k before i died. One of my friends was at 5k when we finally got rolled, haha.

Damn $5,000 in bounty money. Why didnt you guys try and escape? My highest is $2,150. Held down a house with only 2 exits. Camped up 2nd floor, but gotta be careful from 2nd floor windows. Sheriffs on perimeter be shooting the house up. Get hit. So pissed I came close again. Only 2mins away from me needing to escape and this dbag again stalks me and kills from behind.

I completed all the hideouts which was fun. Had a 3 man posse. Then we messed it up for someone else. Brought it on themselves when they killed our horses from afar.

I'm like 8 hours in and I still haven't really done anything. I've opened the third guy of the story missions, his name's West something, he's a W on the map. I've finished Bonnie McFarlane, and the Armadillo Sherriff (or at least brought them to a breaking point). But I've done a ton of stranger missions, Water and Honesty, American Appetites, California, the one with the old married lady, and a few others.
And I'm still obsessed with the achievement stuff. I'm at like level five Hunter and Sharpshooter, and four with the herbs. I've done a ton of bounty posters. Found four treasure maps, which are really hard with just the pictures. And done countless Blue Dot friend pop up missions. And I'm still not bored with any of it. The side stuff became tedious and boring in GTA, but in this, I almost don't want to get into the mission stuff because I'm afraid I won't want to get back into this stuff.

I've gone out of my way to win a poker tourney in each town, and a round of horseshoes. That stuff yields clothing scraps. And I just noticed that the clothing breakdown tells you were to search for scraps, so now I find myself hunting down scraps. There's a great scavenger aspect to this thing that I love.

this game is insane it has good graphics and good gameplay

Gameplay

Red Dead Redemption gives the player a large, open world environment allowing the player to move freely. Players on foot can walk, talk, shoot, kill, ride, run, interact with the environment, and combat enemies with firearms. Different breeds of horses are the main forms of transportation. Swimming is not an option, as the protagonist John Marston cannot swim and will drown if the player ventures too far into a body of water (though he is able to wade where the water is shallow enough).
The open world environment allows players to choose how they want to play. Storyline missions are for progress. Along with the main storyline, players can take part in random events they encounter as they explore the West. These include public hangings, ambushes, pleas for assistance, and dangerous animal attacks. Players can also take part in optional side activities ranging from standoffs, gambling, and hunting animals for pelts and meat.
Red Dead Redemption makes use of a morality system where players have the ability to gain positive or negative 'honor'. Some of the ways to gain positive honor include taking an outlaw alive instead of killing him, or saving a kidnapped innocent. Negative honor can be attained for committing crimes including killing and/or robbing civilians. This works along with another system, 'fame,' showing and governing how people react based on Marston's honor status.

This is game of the year. I dont even see how Call of Duty Black Ops tops it.

Check this out...

June downloadable content for Red Dead Redemption (http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2010/05/05/red-dead-redemption-downloadable-content-is-co-op-missions-pack-coming-in-june-2010.htm)

1. Its co-op (2 to 4 players)
2. 6 new missions plus achievements/trophies (the hunters will love to hear that)
3. Free

1 of 3 downloadable contents. The other 2 most likely will cost money. But I've paid for rockstar DLC with GTA4 without hesistation and wasnt disappointed. So we'll see what the other 2 DLC are. Adding to the story? Spinning off it with characters from this game? New weapons, missions, achievements, multiplayer game modes? Who knows but I hope they dont drop the new DLC until end of summer. Still enjoying this game. :pimp:

I helped him out and then got in a fist fight. I'm trying to kill two cougars with my knife for my next hunting mission, but I can't find them for some reason. I've killed a few already, and I know they're usually up toward the mountains, but I ran around for a couple hours last night and found nothing.

Anyone know a good spot to find cougars? (And I know an expensive bar on a Friday night is an answer, but it's not what I'm looking for. I tried to google "Where to find cougars", and wound up looking at Milf porn for most of last night.)

Cool. I can't get there yet though. Do you know if there's some mission you have to beat to open that area up? I've going deliberately slow on the missions. This was actually the last thing I was going to do before I pressed on in the story. My next gathering mission is the Prickly Pear which I know I can't get to yet.

Yeah, you might not be able to get to Tall Trees until you finish Mexico. Tall Trees is associated the last area, a lot of Blackwater missions will send you out there. There are sometimes cougars scattered around the world, but that spot in tall trees is the only place I know they gather consistently. The cougars seem to be a lot more common at night, so you might try hunting then. Prickly Pear is mostly found in Mexico if my memory serves me.

Yeah, Prickly Pear is definitely in Mexico, it says it in the journal description, which I also still haven't opened up. I'm still stuck to New Austin. Like I said, I'm really trying to go slow through the missions. So I'm trying to dig through as much extra stuff as I can first. I wouldn't even be trying for the cougars if it weren't for the fact that I've seen them several times already. The always seem to be near the northern parts of the map, or on the mountain top on Gaptooth ridge. I'm doing a lot of gang hideout clearing, a ton of wanted posters, and so on.

This is definitely a game that its good to take at your own pace. Its amazing how much time and energy went into the smallest details. I kind of raced through the main story, but now I am going back and completing all the challenges and random quests. I was not very satisfied with the ending, so I am probably going to replay the story and be evil instead of good to see if things change at all.

The multiplayer has started becoming more and more fun too, and the free DLC coop missions are only going to make it better. There are already some great hunting missions online, just finished a long series where you end up killing like 15 bears including one super beast.

knifing cougars isnt to bad. what i usually do is shoot em once or twice with a shitty pistol so they get injured and scared, then just run by and slash em.

One of the later hunting challenges involves knifing a grizzly bear. that one is a little harder than cougars. bears arent all that aware of their surroundings so i ended up just sneaking around until i found one and knife it from behind to complete it.

I could never find one alone. I see one and then from different angles I hear the growls of others. Also didnt know u could use a pistol to injure them then knife and it count. I thought straight knife work. Interesting.

I havent got to any of these missions. Completed 2 Marshalls missions and just saving it for now. But multiplayer has similar challenges for stuff like this. Like kill 4 bears and the 5th you gotta knife. Maybe single player they arent in packs. Cuz multiplayer I've literally seen 4 bears together charging towards them. Then as I flee run into cougars. Crazy.

I know cowboys couldnt swim hence why you cant swim in this game. But they damn sure used rafts. Would have been cool to use them in the game. Gather material and make a raft. Then fish. I am not entirely sure that the cougars are getting injured (i always aim for the legs so that it wont kill, i think i miss a lot though), however, they are definitely scared of bullets or something, so just shooting them once or twice to spook them before going in for the knife kill works really well.

In multiplayer there are a few challenge where you hunt bears. There is the one where you need to kill five and knife one, and then there is a later one where you need to kill the king bear or whatever. During the latter challenge, you initially get rushed by 10-15 bears before the king bear spawns, so if you see a train of like 5 bears running at you they are probably from this challenge or something.

So far, i have found that the best way to make money in single player is hunting. A few hours in one afternoon netted me $3500. The most valuable animals are probably Bison, Hawks/Eagles, Big horn, Beaver, Wolves and maybe Grizzlies.

Yeah, hunting is an easy money maker. The Hawk and Eagle feathers are quite valuable. And the wolves can be pretty valuable if you get lucky and they yield a heart. I'm not far enough to know about Bison, Grizzlies, or Beavers, but I can add that Bucks are pretty valuable. If you come across a group of deer, look for the larger male with the antlers, because that rack is worth a few dollars.

One of my few gripes at this point though (maybe my only gripe), is that I wish there was a way to turn off the skinning animation, and the loot body animation for that matter. I've done it enough now that I'd rather just have the few seconds back to start running around more.

And I think it was Gobb who pointed out that weapon wheel would be better served being replaced with a quick draw off the D-Pad, although I've gotten pretty used to it, I still agree with him.

This is funny cuz last night I completed all the Master Hunter achievements. Knifing was as bad as i expected. I did what you just hinted at. Shooting to spook them then i rushed the cougar and knifed it. Same with bear altho it took more than one slash. The hardest of the hunter missions was the boars. Legendary boar too much shotgun blasts than the regular boar. However you're getting rushed by different angles. And you end up doin that stupid fall ont he ground only to have another boar trample you.

yeah there are basically 3 areas and mexico is obviously the second one, so you still have a good ways to go.

Whatever button you press to hold the lasso before you throw it on someone? You have to keep holding it as you ride the horse with them behind you. The problem is you cant go fast on the horse or you could kill the person dragging. On xbox 360, you have to hold the LT trigger button which pulls out the lasso before you hurl it. I tried bringing someone to town by dragging them but I have a bad habit of going off the side of steep cliffs as such. When I did that the dude was hitting the rocks down the side and died. So long as you stay on the road path you're good. I dont know the button for ps3 which i think you have.

Yeah, it's L1 on the PS. Or the same button you use to draw your weapons if you changed the original configuration.

I just got to the 3rd 'area' tonight. I have about 16 missions to go AFAIK.

The story is beginning to come together with all the little loose ends, though I'm sure there's a twist. Rockstar loves interesting endings.

I think when I'm all done, im gonna run around and shoot the shit out of random people. I wanna be an outlaw :D

Where do you live where Red Dead Redemption is sold out? :oldlol:

I'm in Mexico, last mission I did was when I chased down a train before some bridge was blown up. Took a break from missions and did some hunting and gambling at saloon. I thought getting to $10,000 would be easy. Not so.

I hope these new coop missions come soon. Clearing gang hideouts and ganking people is fun but still gets boring after a while, and the shootout/bag grab games are kind of lame.

I've had a few freeze ups when approaching gang hideouts (in single player), but none trying to travel, although I've only done the fast travel probably four or five times.

I have a PS3 as well.
