View Full Version : Kobe on the decline?

sergiorodriguez

Is Kobe Bryant on the decline? Yes he is injuring but that is a sign that his body is deteriorating after playing in the NBA since he was 17.

He is still a good player but it looks as though players like Kevin Durant, Stephen Jackson and Brandon Roy have surpassed him.

Do you think that Kobe Bryant is on the decline?

He is still a top 3 player in the league, but he needs to rest it out for a couple of games

Lakers are one of the most stacked teams in the NBA. I am sure they can win some games without Kobe.

This team needs a healthy Kobe Bryant in the playoffs.

Kevin Durant >>>> Kobe, fact. the kobe nutriders don't like to admit it, but KD is better in all aspects over kobe, better shot, better hands, doesn't rape, blocks shots, tall, 3 pt shot, scores points consistents, not selfish

Yeh that's what I was thinking, Durantula has surpassed Kobe.

I am really waiting for them to introduce a Durant MVPuppet and have him gradually push out Kobe, the Kobe MVPuppet marketing campaign is really much worse than lebron's last year and needs to end soon.

Reggie just said Kobe, Carmelo, Lebron and Wade are the 4 superstars in the league, but I'd say Durant has taken Kobe's place, with Stephen Jackson lurking in the ranks.

I think its really unquestionable wether kobes better than durant. I mean hes obviously not. Not only is kobe on the decline, but the lakers as a whole are too. I wouldn't be surprised if the Thunder won the finals this year. Etan Thomas is playing out of his mind, and in my opinion is a better big man than Gasol.

Before he got hit with the injury bug Kobe was playing out of his mind.

I'd love to see all the people listed here as being better than Kobe play basketball with broken fingers, back spasms and sore ankles. Me thinks they wouldn't be nearly as better as you think they are.

No he isn't I thought Tyreke Evans would not be having a better rookie year than Lebron james, and also that Beno Udrih would continue to play horribly like he has for the past 3 years instead of play like a top 10 PG in the league.

He IS getting older and the injuries are a reflection of that. But declining? Please. The guy was arguably playing the best ball of his career before the injuries sprung up. He'll be fine once he gets healthy. Which means he needs to sit his ass DOWN for a few games. I can't believe how selfish he's being by continuing to play hurt. Home court won't mean a whole lot if LA doesn't know what Kobe's going to show up from game to game.

I hope this is a joke.. Stephen Jackson better than Kobe? Durant? c'mon really? is this what the hate for Kobe has come down too? The man is a flat out warrior playing with a messed up finger, ankle, a bad back. Most players would sit out with any of those injuries. Lebron & Kobe are still the top 2 in the league, Durant still has to prove he's better then Dirk, Duncan, Melo & Wade before you even get to Kobe & Lebron.. and I have alot of respect for Durants game he's one of my favorite players but you can't just say he's better then greats just off a great string of games and keep in my he hasn't proven anything yet, nothing at all.

i'm amazed at the amount of bandwagonning (excuse the improper grammar) that KD is getting this season. not that i'm saying that you are a bandwagoner SR, its just that people who wrote off KD a couple years ago because they said he was weak and skinny (the guy couldn't even bench 185 pre-draft tho) are the same people saying that he's unstoppable now. I've always been a durant fan, but durant>kobe? i honestly don't think so, though i can see durant surpassing kobe one day.

but to be back on topic, kobe is on the decline not just because of his health, but i think he's not where he used to be mentally. his whole mentality changed from trusting his team mates to believing he has to carry the Lakers all by himself. it seems as if he's so afraid of receiving the same criticism from the 05-06 season that he makes himself believe he has more to prove than just win a championship, in which some cases he does. he has to trust that his team mates can go 2 weeks without him and win 75% of the games they play, until then, i think we're gonna just get 50/50 glimpses of kobe. as in, see the kobe people are used to seeing and then seeing the kobe that played against the bobcats

i've always hated bryant, but he's still pretty f'n good still. i also have to respect his dedication and ability to play through pain. but it is sort of funny how there were some articles on yahoo about kobe not slowing down at all just a month ago, and now he's starting to rack up the injuries. time will catch up sooner than later since he's been in the league so long. but he still has more longevity than a player like say... dwayne wade, because he has much more of a finesse game. he doesn't throw his body around as much, and doesn't need to either.

he is barely a top 3 player on his own team

Really? The stats of the main players in the rotation:

Kobe Bryant- 27.9 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 4.7 apg
Pau Gasol- 17.1 ppg, 10.7 rpg, 3.3 apg
Andrew Bynum- 15.4 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 1.3 apg
Ron Artest- 11.4 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.1 apg
Derek Fisher- 7.1 ppg, 2 rpg, 2.6 apg
Lamar Odom- 9.7 ppg, 9.7 rpg, 3.7 apg

Kobe leads the team in scoring, is one of the team's best defenders, is the best on the team at creating his own shot, has three game winners, and is the only one on the team who can take over a game. Kobe and LeBron are tied for best player in the league (Durant isn't nearly the defender that they are and they're more clutch than him too) as I look at all the aspects, including defense.

Look at what Kobe was doing early in the season when he was healthy. He was unstoppable in the post and he wasn't relying on athleticism. Entering the new year, Kobe was averaging 30.4 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 4.5 apg and 2.1 spg on 48.5% shooting on a 25-6 team. It looked like he was going to have the best season of his career. He was making it look easy. I've never seen him score so consistently and effortlessly. His post game and mid-range game were unstoppable.

All Kobe has to do is be a little less stubborn, sit out for a bit, let his injuries heal and he'll be back killing the league. If he keeps playing through all of these injuries, they'll only get worse.

Yes, Kobe has declined, i personally would rather have OJ Mayo, Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, a young talent on my team. The fact that his body is breaking down now, just worries me.
What did OJ Blow-you do in the last game against Kobe and the Lakers? And remind me what Kobe did to him?

Kobe is fine, this thread is a joke.

Yes Kobe has been having injures but are typical injures anybody can have has nothing to do with age. Kobe is still young enough. stop acting like he is 35....Kobe is still a top 2 player in this league and when healthy you could argue the best.

YEA.. I am not a Kobe fan but I don't believe for a second he has slipped.. Kobe is still an amazing player who has gotten it done at the end of games this year.. Who the hell thinks this kid is slipping.?. If anything he is playing very well considering his messed up finger.. Anyone who disses Kobe at this point of the season just does not understand how a veteran like KObe thinks.. He is only worrying about the Playoffs..

I started to notice it during the 2007-2008.

Remember a couple of dunks where he barely gets off the floor... Almost Okaforkesque.

Way too early to say. A healthy Kobe Bryant is a top 3 player, as seen earlier in the season, but the current Kobe looks as though he's slipped. Let's wait until the playoffs are over until we officially label him a "has been" though. :oldlol:

Is Kobe Bryant on the decline? Yes he is injuring but that is a sign that his body is deteriorating after playing in the NBA since he was 17.

He is still a good player but it looks as though players like Kevin Durant, Stephen Jackson and Brandon Roy have surpassed him.

Do you think that Kobe Bryant is on the decline?

He IS getting older and the injuries are a reflection of that. But declining? Please. The guy was arguably playing the best ball of his career before the injuries sprung up. He'll be fine once he gets healthy. Which means he needs to sit his ass DOWN for a few games. I can't believe how selfish he's being by continuing to play hurt. Home court won't mean a whole lot if LA doesn't know what Kobe's going to show up from game to game.

if prior to the injuries was kobe's best in his career... lol then kobe is really overrated

Durant is alrdy a better player than kobe by LONG WAY at same age

Lebron > > > Wade > > > > Kobe/Melo/Durant now

only kobe stans still think their idol is still #1 or #2 in the league

I think Kobe's athletic ability has declined some. But he's still one of the top 2 players in the league with Lebron. MJ was still the best player in the league at 35 years old winning finals MVPs. MJ would have still been the best player in the league for another 2 years, if anything be regarded as the best perimeter player. When you have a well rounded game like Kobe or MJ you can still be the best without having the athletic ability you once had. Magic, Bird, and the Big O were never regarded as the best athletes. But they were considered the best players. So even when an MJ or Kobe's athletic ability declines they are so skilled that they will be regarded as a top 1 or 2 player in the league in their early to mid 30's.

sacramento are trying to save money, kevin martin and kenny thomas for kobe. lakers get a younger better player in martin, thomas makes salaries match and sacramento gets a player on the decline. its not like kobe has won a championship as the best player recently is it?

I agree 100%! Let's take it easy! The first two guys closest to Kobe on the perimeter are LBJ and D-Wade. They have the all around package to their games, those two guys became all league defense after the Olympics. Lebron to me is arguably better than Kobe now, but for that last shot I still want Kobe taking it. And I don't mean by legacy Lebron is better because he hasn't been around long enough. Lebron is a better rebounder, that's expected because he is 6'8 265-270 pounds, pretty much the size of Karl Malone. Thus that makes him a more versatile defender because he can guard 1-4 or even 5. Lebron is even a better passer. But at 6'6 225 Kobe has no weaknesses in his game and has more ways to score than ANYBODY IN NBA HISTORY. Durant needs to pick up his D and passing ability, same for Melo.

Actually guys like LBJ, Wade, Joe Johnson, and Roy are the guys from the total package game that are the closest to Kobe. From a scoring take over the game standpoint Kobe, LBJ, Wade, Durant, and Melo are the top five in the league in that realm. Two different categories and you see why Kobe, LBJ, and Wade are the three best in the league. Melo and Durant are more from the Nique-Gervin-King school. Unstoppable scorers who can put on team on its back and score in the clutch. But Kobe, LBJ, and Wade give you that AND give you the complete, elite all around game. It's what seperated MJ, Magic, and Bird from Erving, Gervin, Nique, and King. With that said I would take Nique over a Pippen anyday because even though Pippen is a better all around player Nique can take over a game and put his team on his back. MJ, Havlicek, Bird, Rick Barry, Big O, LBJ, Kobe, Wade, GHill when he was right, and Penny when he was right had the all around game of Pippen or damn close AND could take over a game scoring the ball. So all around in some cases doesn't mean better. Just like I would take Melo and Durant over Roy or JJ. I just think Melo and Durant are so unstoppable scoring that the only perimeter guys I can take over them now are Kobe, LBJ, and Wade.

Kobe had 0 assists tonight, how do you have 0 assists with Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum on your team. As of right now Derrick Rose and Kevin Durant are both better than Kobe Bryant.

When you think about it. He has sustained multiple major knee surgeries, he's playing in his 15th year in the NBA, while having went to the very end of every playoffs since '08 and he has to produce and carry a big burden for the team every night. So inevitably he's on decline, those knees have just so many games in them.
