View Full Version : How does someone as unathletic as Paul Pierce attack the basket?

:wtf: Seriously. He's a slow, pathetic, fat ass and he manages to attack the basket. I mean, are defenders laughing at him and taking him as a joke for thinking he can attack the basket and he ends up doing it? Seriously, It's unbelieveable.

Obvious to anyone who knows much about basketball......footwork and ball handling.

Because he's one of the best in the league at changing direction quickly and in unexpected directions, which usually leads to fouls or someone being out of position? Or possibly because he has an incredible mid-range game, forcing defenders to play him close? Or maybe it's because he's got a high enough basketball IQ that he can always find a way to get by his man, regardless of the difference in athleticism and size? Slashing isn't just about athleticism, if it were, Gerald Green would be an all star.

I'd hate to hear your description of Steve Nash.

not that I think this thread is anything useful but strength and explosion are not all that matter in the NBA.
My example Steve Nash. Really not that fast, I would be shocked if he ever dunked, be has footwork, smarts, and understand the game as well as anyone in the NBA.

Do you also think that teams drafting for potential is overrated.
Look at how many bust there have been like Stro Swift, Tyrus Thomas, ect.
The only time i remember a team getting a great break on athletic ability is Dwight Howard over Omeka

so you're telling me a guy like Brian Scalabrine could drive to the basket if he were a threat?

Did you even read the post you replied to? If Scalabranie had the footwork, ball handling, mid range game, finishing ability of Paul Pierce then yes....he could drive to the basket too.

Because, despite what some idiots think, PP is extremely athletic. He's also one of the strongest 3's in the league and has a plethora (great word) of moves to the basket.

Paul Pierce is only unathletic to people who haven't played basketball before. If you are 6'6 and can move like he can (even at age 33), then you aren't unathletic at all.

Anyone with a jumper can attack the basket no matter how un-athletic they are.
Craftiness also gets you to the rim. I've tricked many people into thinking I have no driving/dribbling game then scored easily... and that's when I was super out of shape. All you need to do is get them off balance and after that you can seal them off...

Err, no he isn't. At least not anymore. He used to be though. Was watching the '04 All Star game on NBA TV today and almost didn't recognize Pierce. He looked quick and explosive off-the-dribble pretty much every time he made a move.

Pierce reminds me of one of those guys you see at the park who smokes weed before, during, and after games.. never works on his game, never hits the weightroom, never does anything to be great but just has "it".. its a mental thing really..
crazy cuz if Pierce ever had the body/athleticism of Kobe, Tmac, etc who knows how great he coulda been.

I wanted to add that Pierce is really crafty off-the-ball as well. He often puts himself in great position on the catch, making it even easier to play the defender.

how do people who sit on their asses watching games ever come up with the notion that dudes in the NBA have no athleticism?
even the fattest mass in the NBA has more athleticism than the average tard had at their absolute peak.

Not taking anything away from nash but he typically goes by guys using a ball screen. And he's not slow either
Change of pace/direction makes up for a lot of his lack of "Athleticism" ...
Watch Chris Mullins old drives... he looked like a matrix slomo sequence and still got to the rack.

Pierce has a great step back jumper and counter that he uses to get guys off balance, PLUS for his size, he does a great job of getting his shoulders lower than his defender's

Surprising no one has mentioned Pierce's flop tactics which defenders have to be weary of. Pierce is the master at initiating the contact and then stumbling as if the defender is making him go off-balanced to get a cheap whistle. And you can't forget the exaggerated backwards head snap move he uses for added effect.

Because attacking the basket has never been about athleticism. It's about heart, drive, determination, etc
It's about creating off the dribble, and Pierce has great handles.
Finishing isn't even about athleticism.
If it was about athleticism, VC would be the best in the league at driving and he's clearly not.

No he doesn't ... at all. Sure he uses it, just say as for instance like CP3 who play on pick and roll fashioned offensive system due to having strong PG and strong PF play ... but to say thats the reason Nash gets to the rim is beyond ignorant.
Nash is great off the dribble. Very crafty, and has great change of pace moves, which can be as important in getting to the basket as just having naturally blinding quick speed.
footwork
midrange game
ability to hit tough shots while acting
get superstar calls
He's good but not as good outside the nba. He wont get the same calls in fiba

During huh? I am just imagining someone w/ a blunt in their mouth trying to break someone down off the dribble...

pierce is not super athletic, but he's far from "unathletic." who are you comparing him to? the jason richardsons of the league? then of course he ain't there. but still, he's above average in the league in terms of athleticism compared to the entire pool of nba players. but you people talk like he moves like chris mullin.

02-09-2010, 03:13 AM
its cuz the player guarding him is always laughing his ass off when they see that pierce is looking to attack the basket. he's so fat, pathetic, and unathletic, it really is a joke. so they defend him lackluster, laughing their asses off, then pierce takes advantage of their subpar defense and makes his move.

Add veteran moves like some shoulder and elbows here and there. I do the same shit to people bigger than me when they guard me.

Yes, he is very crafty manipulating a ball screen. I watch a ton of Phoenix games and rarely see him go by guys without one. In straight iso situations, he looks to pull up for jumper off the dribble
