View Full Version : Who is the Best In-Game Dunking Center of All-Time?

I brought this up in the recent topic on David Robinson and I thought it deserved a thread of its own. Now I'm not insisting this is the answer but still, I'll nominate Mr. Robinson first. Along with his patented two-hand power flushes, his finishes were actually quite versatile. It is not common to see a 7'1'' center 360 in a regular season game or throw down a jackknife windmill.
Here is my evidence:

Early Robinson Dominance (seemingly taken from about 3 games of work): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHUlY29jkoI
2014 Edit: Forgot I made a thread like this in 2010. Also made one earlier this year (about best seven footer dunkers, again touting The Admiral). Obviously trying to brainwash you guys into agreeing that David Robinson was a great dunker.

Shaq definetly comes to mind. When it comes to power, he's pretty much #1.
The Diesel is my favorite.

Here are my top 3...
1. Darryl Dawkins named his dunks.
2. Shaq is just pure power.
3. Dwight Howard is an athletic monster.

All fine choices thus far. Dawkins, O'Neal and Howard all carved out quite a niche for shoving the ball down opponents throats. Of those three, I find Howard to be the most versatile in terms of dunking variance, but that may be due to his Slam Dunk appearances. These days he does seem to keep it relatively pedestrian (two-hand throw-in's, limited hang).
The thing about Robinson that seems to differentiate him from the pack just a tiny bit is how his dunks infrequently resembled those of a guard. 9 times out of 10 he was doing "center" dunks, but every now and again you'd get that aforementioned windmill hybrid or something of that nature.
Also, I loved the fact that Robinson could steal the ball and take it full speed coast to coast for the slam.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKVqpXl3M18&feature=PlayList&p=7DA9CC66ACD72E6C&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=20
Are there any dunking center innovators outside of Darryl, Shaq and Dwight?
And may I introduce you to some Jamaal Magloire?

Jamaal's No-Look 360: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bjm0aB5tXYE&feature=related
Honorable Mention goes to Jamaal's dunk in the 2004 All-Star game where his feet touched the ground before he let go of the rim.

Ha, yeah that was not a fun moment for me. That dunk had a couple of things working against it in my regard. First, it was Shaq dunking on my absolute favorite player at the time and second, it happened in David's backyard (The Alamodome).
And in the interest of full disclosure, Shaq also did this to The Admiral: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lI85iVU3xkE&feature=related
I always used to be bitter because I thought Shaq kicked David while he was down (just like how I used to insist that Jordan kicked Ehlo in the face when he celebrated that game-winning jumper).

ORL D12 had the explosion & the power, his alley oop slams are some of the best I've seen.
Dwight, other than Shaq, is one of the best big men at it. D-Rob of course was a monster as well. Dwight got a lot of hops for a big man though.
