was looking at pictures of Kareem/Thurmond's '72 matchup and came across this. Look at the right shoulder. did this dude have a permanent "pump" during games? Your veins shouldn't be popping out like that. Look at the left leg too, looks right out of a sculpture. I always see kblaze posting a picture of Thurmond grabbing a rebound but you only see his upper body. I didn't know he had bionic legs too.

he's the most shredded NBA player from the pics I've seen, puts david robinson to shame. almost a bit repulsive to look at how cut he is.

side note, was 1972 the greatest and deepest center field ever?

Kareem
Wilt
Cowens
Thurmond
Lanier
Unseld
Reed (though he was hurt for most of it)
Bellamy

All HOFers.

3 of the 5 best defensive centers in Kareem, Wilt, Thurmond. 2 of the top 3 centers ever. Half the league had hall of fame centers. How the fck did Kareem average 35 ppg on these guys? There are more solid defensive centers like Elmore Smith who I didn't even mention. Just mind-boggling.

I watched him in a couple all star games and some games showcasing Rick Barry and his offense was nothing like I expected. His jumper was kinda wet from 18-20 feet and he was hitting them in traffic. Not exactly taking guys off the dribble but he would come down catch it around 20 one dribble pull up drain it. Had some moves around the basket too. Hes one I hate that I missed.

I have the full Bucks boxscores from that season. I'll post some of Kareem's splits against those guys in another thread when I have time. It's crazy what he did to some of these guys (gave Wilt 50, gave Cowens...all defensive first teamer in 70s 50+ TWICE, near 40/30 games...I mean he annihilated the league at a time when it was arguably the deepest at his position). I never understood the stupid "weak-era" talk especially for early 70s. '75 & '76 I could see (and Kareem didn't even have a chance to win a ring those years because his team collapsed during his injury) but then the merger happened and NBA got even more talent.

Nate Thurmond is underrated as hell, i remember in a youtube video where Wilt said that Nate gave him problems when ever he defended him.
Kareem too...only guy I'd say who could consistently control him. Apparently he had a nice vertical to go with his strength, and could challenge the hook and also be very physical with him. Would be one of the 5+ block guys if they kept that stat back then.

Super low body fat %. The left leg is crazier than the arms. I've seen other pics of players (MJ, Gilmore, DRob) in motion where their legs/arms looked similarly shredded, but not *quite* that much. I also think the lack of color helps with that illusion since it provides higher contrast.

what impressed me about that right shoulder is that he is boxing out with his left arm, so he isn't putting much pressure on it. the crazy david robinson pic is with him lifting Malone iirc and usually for players to look that shredded they have to be lifting something, pushing someone or grabbing really tightly to a rebound. Thurmond's right arm is just casually resting

There's a hi-res picture of Jordan that used to be hosted on this Western Australia MJ site of him grabbing a rebound vs. Detroit circa 1990, and he's absolutely ripped. Wish I could find it, as the site has been taken down.

Great stuff Fatal9,

Other than perhaps Mose Malone in the early 80's, I don't ever recall an opposing center outplaying Kareem over the course of a season. And Kareem was on the downside of his great career at the time.

Your take on the "Golden Age of Centers" was right on, too. They had a slew of HOFers back in the early 70's. For Kareem to post multiple 30+ppg seasons (along with near 60% shooting) against those guys is testament to his offensive prowess.

One of the first Kings games the Blazers played with Oden, the Kings people were talking about comparisons. They were saying Oden might never be the next Bill Russell or David Robinson, but probably Nate Thurmond which isn't haf bad.

i dont believe that one bit. Professional body builders can barely get to 2% for the competitions they do. Regardless, anyone who has a low body fat + lots of muscle + exercising (such as playing basketball and getting your heart rate up) will have a lot of veins showing.

Crappy cameras from past generations makes younger people think that it was genetically impossible for a person to be that cut. I don't see a difference in athleticism in today's players and the ones from the 90s, (And vitals stats prove it) yet people today act as if the 90s were less athletic.

One of the few to ever block the skyhook. And as a testament to the Dipper's physical prowess at the time, one can see below at Nate's legs trembling as he attempts to perfectly time the block just before Wilt goes up with the powerful yet graceful finger roll.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpiRo8-aKJc#t=4m0s

his legs aren't trembling, he is trying to time his jump. shuffling his feet.

Love to see a little appreciation for one of the '6'6 white guys' that Wilt dominated for his career .

Unfortunately for Thurmond his career was overshadowed by Wilt/Russell although he was voted as a top 50 player of all time. As for as strength I think it is because his career was overlapped by Wilt & Artis Gilmore(who should be in the HOF) & they were generally considered the two strongest big men ever(Shaq is right there with them as well).

Thurmond is the 1st player in NBA history to 'officially' record a Quadruple double in 1974(Although there is no doubt Wilt had done this several times & maybe Russell as well though blks & steals were not kept in their era).
