It's that time of the year again. Each year, I keep a running tally of the hirings and firings.

2010 College Basketball Coaching Changes (http://news.collegesportsinfo.com/2010/01/2010-college-basketball-coaching.html)

I do the updates primarily on the article, but will also update this thread as time permits.

1/28/10: UNCW Fires Moss
1/11/10: Jerry Wainwright Fired at DePaul

Current Openings

Central Arkansas:

Former Coach: Rand Chappell (fired)

Potential Central Arkansas Coach Candidates:
Russ Pennell - Grand Canyon coach & former Arizona interim coach (also former UCA player), Mark Downey - Arkansas Tech coach, James Dickey - former Texas Tech head coach/Oklahoma St assistant, Mark Gottfried - former Alabama coach, Joe Kleine - UALR assistant, Joe Pasternack - UNO coach

Dartmouth:

Former Coach: Terry Dunn (fired/resigned)
Interim Coach: Mark Gaupe

Potential Dartmouth Coach Candidates: Not much public interest thus far. 50 years without a title will do that. Expect Dartmouth to look at a candidate pool that will include regional and other Ivy League assistants (Nat Graham - Cornell assist) or lower division coaches with success in the area (Mike Maker - Williams College coach, Bob Walsh - Rhode Island College coach, Larry Anderson - MIT coach)

DePaul:

Former Coach: Jerry Wainwright (fired)
Interim Coach: Tracy Webster

Potential DePaul Coach Candidates: Expect DePaul to target top assistants from other BCS conferences with ties to the Chicago area. Head coaches with some success in the region in conferences like the MVC, Horizon and Summit should top the list.
Names you might see are Tyrone Corbin (Utah Jazz assistant) and Brad Brownell of Wright St. Jeff Goodman is suggesting SIU's Chris Lowery, Dayton

I can't imagine Downey leaving Arkansas Tech for UCA. I know UCA is D1 but they are in a mess right now, and Downey just lead ATU to the GSC championship, and a #1 seed in the D2 NCAAT. Then again the rest of those coaches are already in place at a D1 school in some sort of capacity, and UCA isn't exactly a high profile D1 job.

* 3/15/10: UCF Fires Speraw

Big hire coming for them. They will likely try to find the guy who can get their program on par with USF and increase the chance of a future Big East all-sports invite.

I think Lickliter got a bit of a raw deal. Had great success at Butler, goes to Iowa, team stinks. Alford builds a nice program at Southwest Mizzou, comes to Iowa, moderate success, gets run off to New Mexico, 3 seed in his 2nd year. I mean what do you expect Iowa, the days of Tom Davis are long gone. I think any new coaching hire deserves at least 4/5 years.

Those days are over in college football/basketball. The money is too big a factor. A coach must get off to a promising start or he'll already be on the hotseat after year #1.

And it's wrong. You can't expect a guy to come in, instill his system, clean house of whatever guys aren't compatible, and immediately improve your win total w/o even letting him have a few of his own recruiting clases. Iowa has (had?) a pretty nice class coming in, now they're back to square one.

Anyone see Iowa offering Ben Jacobson from Northern Iowa? He's young (39) and has just 4 years of HC experience. I just really don't know what type of guy Iowa thinks they can get.

Jacobson woudl be a good get for anyone. Especially for a power conference team that has struggled as of late.

as long as Bruce Pearl doesn't leave, then I am a-okay.

Glad to see Lebo go, he was wasting talent.

Steve Lavin to interview for the St John's job on Monday. He's been with ESPN the last 6 years.

I really hope Lavin goes to St. John's. I think he's an even more annoying commentator than VItale. He doesn't even speak like a normal person. It's just one stupid thing after another.

Lavin Rules! Especially when he's been clearly drinking before calling the game.

Lavin's apparently contacted Gene Keady about working on his staff in some capacity. Not as a coach on the bench but a "directer of operations" type thing, basically a consultant. The quotes I've seen indicate Keady's all ears and pretty interested. Lavin's big knock was always basically that we was more of a smooth talker than an actual coach, so Keady'd be a big help in that regard.

I just went from not giving a shit about Lavin and St. John's to hoping he gets the program turned around and back in the tourney on a yearly basis, even though I don't think he will.

Not a coaching change, but Matt Painter got a new 8 year deal. Goes from one of the lowest paid coaches in the Big Ten (I think around 250k base) to $1.3mm per, potential bonuses as well.

Looks like Oliver purnell is on his way to DePaul.

KG215

ACC losing Skinner, Purnell, and Gaudio all in one offseason. Not quite the same as losing Roy, K, and Gary, but those three aren't bad.

Clemson hires (http://www.thestate.com/2010/04/13/1242018/reports-clemson-hiring-wright.html) former Wright State coach Brad Brownell. Be interesting to see him in the ACC, his teams are pretty slow paced. He's had pretty good success though, if he can handle the step up it should be a good hire.

Brownell did a very good job while at UNC-Wilmington as well. Solid coach who has ties to ACC country. He's another DePauw graduate.

I've heard plenty of rumors about Oregon wanting Jamie Dixon. Hopefully it doesn't go any further than rumors because Dixon is a great fit here at Pitt.

Oregon, finally, got a coach. Long time Creighton HC Dana Altman.

Iowa State hires the man, the myth, The Mayor, Fred Hoiberg. Hoiberg's never coached a day in his life, but he is of course a legend in Ames.

KG215
04-28-2010, 01:55 AM
Hoiberg is one of my all-time favorite "token white guy" players. Loved him with Minny.

Altman burned Arkansas about 4 years ago. He got to Fayetteville, went through the intro presser, did the Hog Call, and was on his way back to Creighton all in about a 28 hour span.

Skinner did an excellent job in finding and developing Troy Bell, Craig Smith, Jared Dudley, and Tyrese Rice.

Purnell is not a good coach. Gaudio was atrocious.
