I start full time work on Monday, hopefully I can save up for something good. That said, I absolutely love the car. I was really surprised by all the news surrounding Toyota recently - the wagon has never broken down and is still a very good drive.

It's a great starting bike, comfortable drive and enough power. Set me back about 1300 euros. The classis look might have to do with the '98 build year ;). And I'm taking it out allready, can be a little chilly but there's no better way of getting around.
You riding something like this: http://www.asl-testsite.co.uk/motors/normal/Honda-CB750-Nighthawk-1992.jpg ?

Had the same truck for a while, I loved that thing, and it took some awful beatings off-road while doing expeditions, but last year the frame was getting rusty to the point where it was unsafe so I had to scrap her :( If you're wondering how it got so rusty, you try enduring through 10 Newfoundland winters like she did. You've never parallel til you've tried doing it inbetween 8 foot high snowbanks downtown.
I now have a 2010 Mazda 3, pictured below (you'll notice I'm still trying to use it for off-roading :lol)

I can just drive it as a fun car now but I'll need a normal one for daily driving. :(

Not a fan of the FRC's unless it's a Z. C5s are the way to go though, in terms of bang for your buck, you aren't going to find anything that fast for about $15k used.

Why? Older ones like mine (~2000) would be understandable. You feel every bump on the road and it's not exactly a precision handling vehicle. But the newer Chevs/GMs have a really smooth ride.

I'm confused which car he's talking about that would outperform the C5.
Depends on which engine he ordered with the car. The base model couldn't but anything after that could. Second option is the 5.4L @ 476 BHP, and goes higher.

Not to mention that for the price of an SL you could buy a Z, which would thoroughly rape it in pretty much every area.

It also costs twice as much. You're right, but if you actually want to compare it to something priced in the same region, a '09 Z would rock its socks off.

can you provide a source for this? All the data i can find says that even stock the corvette has superior performance to the SL500. (although the SL600 and 65 AMG are faster, at least in a straight line)
pete's montreux

Like I said, it depends on which engine he got. Base SL500 doesn't beat a base C6. Looking at the engines for the SL500, I don't see any that could beat a ZR1 in any way shape or form. We're talking 640 HP with an insane amount of torque. A flat plane V12 is not going to beat a twin plane V8, especially with that amount of torque.

Not to mention that anything beyond going 80 mp/h is illegal in most countries anyways and you're not going to win the acceleration battle from me and my 1300euro motorcycle anyways.
I'd go with ride comfort and I'd say the SL kicks the corvette there. Then again, I'm just jealous you guys are buying new cars and are not driving beaters. I have to agree though that the old-school squarish BMW's look the best.

If you dont believe me, you dont have to take my word for it. Do your own research, and find a source that proves me wrong. My sources show that the corvette ZR1 murders the SL65 AMG around the track.
As far as the low end stock models are concerned, I am pretty sure the Corvette has the edge here as well, especially around the track.
There is a fundamental flaw in comparing these cars. When you are comparing the performance of a mercedes luxury sports coupe to one of the purest sports cars on the market, it should be no suprise that the real sports car has better performance. There are significant differences in the design/purpose of both cars, the mercedes has softer suspension (smooth ride) and more sound deadening (more weight), while the corvette has tight unforgiving suspension (better cornering) and very little sound deadening (less weight).

I had the fortune of driving a '75 Stingray awhile ago, which ordinarily would have sucked due to the fact that it's probably the worst year in Corvette history. Luckily the guy who had previously owned it had popped a 430 HP crate motor in and done pretty much everything else (dualing the exhaust, headers, performance carb/cam, etc). I got it up to about 160 mph before I started getting nervous. When I was finished my back hurt and the interior reeked like gas. The experience honestly was like driving a go-kart that was street legal.

It does look like the 500 loses this (at least in a straight away) but I am having issues trying to figure out what the low end Vette is...
what is the L1, L2, L3, ect...???

Explain why it's more fun?
Not sure if srs.
Explain how you have more control, because I'm rolling my eyes at that comment.
And don't give me that "you're one with the car because you have an extra pedal" bullshit that every other purist uses.

LS3 is the standard engine on a Vette now. You go to the dealership, that's what you buy it with. LS1 was the 350/350/350 (yes I did just refer to a fuel injected engine in CI, I just can't help myself when it comes to the LS1) that came with the C5, LS-2 was the 6.0L that had around 400 hp I believe on earlier C6's, but the LS-3 is the stock engine on a Vette now.

not really a fair comparison b/w the vette and the benz. the benz is more for luxury and comfort..that happens to be pretty damn fast, the vette is more of a sports car. anyways, give me the Benz any day of the week. whenever i borrow my friend's sl55, i never wanna give it back lol.

Explain.
Can't feather the clutch for takeoffs, can't rev-match on downshifts, can't double clutch for faster down-shifts, can't power shift for faster time, can't shift to higher gears to save fuel.

except they do not have anything 2010 from Benz, not the 500, they just have the 550...
and I just compared it to the 2010 1LT...:confusedshrug:

You haven't driven with a sequential manual gearbox have you? Because everything you mentioned is false.

yes, it should be noted that even though the SL preformance may be slightly less...there is no question that the SL is in fact a much nicer car...:D

I haven't raced a car with one. Paddle shifters are lightning fast which give you an edge over manual. That's about it really.
You do realize I'm talking about full blown race-cars, right?

Full blown race cars is a broad term.
I'm just saying that you can rev match, get optimal launches, and down/upshift faster than one can with their hands and feet.

As in GT. I've never heard of a race car with launch control, so feathering the clutch is out with paddles. Rev-matching with a manual is much easier since you can skip gears. You can't skip gears with a sequential manual. Impossible. Manual you can drop from 6th to 2nd [as long as you brake heard enough LOL] in a second without rev-matching [if you don't need to], can't do that with paddles. Sequential are designed to go in order, up or down.

even though I am Benz homer, I will admitt I was thinking the same thing...
however, if you take your car into the dealership on a regular and keep everything up to date, I bet that 500 could easily see 200k miles...
I am not sure what the shelf life of the average Vette is though...

It depends on how you drive it and how well you maintain it. Even if the Vette crapped out, you could go to the dealership and buy another brand new one for 50k and come out even with the SL.:lol

ha...yeah good point
honestly I don't understand why people buy a new Benz...you put 20k miles on that 500 SL and the price will drop all the way to $70k in price...
the first couple years of those things eat up damn near half the price...

It's the symbol of it. Personally I don't know why people buy cars off the lot, period. No shortage of people selling cars with 20k miles on them with a huge chunk of what you'd pay at the dealership taken off.

a 2 year old Benz is so much drastically cheaper than a new one that I don't understand why anyone would go new...

Um, stock SL500 beats a C6. I'm pretty sure of that. Maybe not off the line, but definitely top end. Probably catches up at fourth gear.
LOL. The SL500 would get rocked by the C6. Hell, the base C6 is quicker than a stock SL55.

the Vette does burn it, but I PROMISE you that 65 would win on a track...
No it wouldn't. The SL weighs a good 1400-1500 pounds more than a Z06. A C6Z would have no problem dispatching one on the track.
The SL is a luxury car first, sports car second. I've driven the 500, 55, and 600 twin-turbo models and it's pretty easy to see what MB's purpose was.

but yes, the purpose was a luxury sports car...
