That wasn't a 360. I was more like a 280. Wade's facial is still dunk of the year in my opinion...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Q-Z1ROdn0c

1.) Varejao has 6 inches on him as well as 30-40 more pounds.
2.) It was a straight facial.
3.) Varejao landed on his ass flopping around like a fish dieing near the padding.

I don't know if you noticed, but it wasn't an alley oop 360 dunk. He went 270 and caught the ball mid-rotation and threw it down. Impressive, but nothing crazy. Not trying to shit on JR, but, the level of difficulty is kinda low on something like this(compared to some other dunks we have seen). As long as you get enough elevation and catch the ball right, you could do this. Assuming you can dunk of course...

Rose, on the other hand, has freakish hops and perfect hands. Dude hit his head on the backboard dunking on someone two handed....

Damn. That deserves a serious look, but I'm pretty sure in the end everybody's top 3 for dunks probably looks different. And also IMO if you see the dunk live(as in watching on tv in real time) your probably going to rank it higher because you feel the intensity of the dunk more than if you watched it off youtube.

Hey, I'm just calling it like I see it. He jumped when he was already backwards and barely threw it down...force-wise. Like I said, if you have decent hops and good hands, you could do the same. Add a couple inches to your height and it makes it that much more unimpressive. It was the spin motion and alley-oop factor that made it look cool...

I can barely dunk with 2 hands and could probably get this once or twice outta 10 times. I'd have to work my chicken legs out a bit before though:oldlol:

It was a very nice dunk. I was under the impression he caught the ball in the air and did a 360. In this video his body is already done doing a 360 when he catches the ball and slams it. Still hard as hell to do.

Not the dunk of the year.

It's all about what you define as a 360. Did he spin 360 degrees in the air, he certainly did. Did he spin 360 degrees in the air whilst holding the ball, no he did not. It's rather hard to do a 360 alley when the ball's coming from behind you though.

Was the dunk impressive, considering it was in a game situation: Hell Yes!

Yeah, I definitely look at that as a 360 dunk in terms of the basketball definition. Technicalities will tell you it was not an entire rotation and what-have-you but it's akin to most other spin dunks we've seen through history.

I thought that was a spectacular dunk. I surely would not disqualify this dunk in some regard because he began twisting before he took off. That is how a 360 or any kind of spinning slam is performed. To rise straight in the air then decide to spin at some point I believe would disagree with physics.

In terms of difficulty, maybe it means I'm just not as good a dunker as the other fellow who claimed he could do this two out of ten times, but I'd have no chance of putting this dunk down, especially in the midst of an NBA fast break. I do not find this to be a remedial finish in any regard.

i dunno if it counts or not. But he got off the ground half turned, then had his back to the basket, caught it then dunked it squaring up to the net. I dunno if the degree of difficulty would be harder if he had caught it earlier...

Plus a 180 is usually reserved for reverse dunks, if he faces up the net no one is gonna call it a 180

thejumpa
03-11-2010, 04:40 PM
Reverse dunks=not a 180....cats usually catch the ball already backwards

"360" dunks=not really 360 dunks as they have done a large portion of the rotation without leaving the ground. Try doing a 360 in the air....MUCH more difficult.

Of course this isn't whats accepted nowadays, but it's the truth.

ok...
if you can barely dunk with 2 hands, then i'm pretty sure you couldn't do a reverse alley oop let alone catch an oop with your back to the basket and turn in the air to dunk it.
This requires alot more vertical/ hang time then a regular 2 hand dunk..

Because Kobe is Kobe, and JR Smith is JR Smith. Some of these Kobe fans probably look at the video of that oop vs. the Sixers and see a 1080.

Anyways, in my opinion, both of them are 360s on the basketball court. Do they spin the full 360 degrees? No... but rarely does anyone actually spin the full 360.

I think some of you are just looking for sh!t to nitpick about. It's a sick dunk by JR Smith, and it's as much of a 360 as pretty much any other in-game 360 dunk. STFU and appreciate these amazing plays. It's not every day that someone does something like that.

i don't think kobes vs sixers or jrs were either a 360 alley oop. However the 2nd vid of kobe i would classify as a 360 dunk..

not a big deal though, neither of the oop 180s impress much.

Kobe misses the same dunk (as close to a 360 as JR's) and he is a freak of nature for even trying it.

JR makes the dunk and people are "meh, not a real 360 = not impressed"

is this the first time this has happened in an NBA game? Kobe almost did it and people nearly shit themselves...10 years later someone does it and people don't even care. has the league become so athletic that nothing like this impresses us anymore?

Why does every thread here turn into KOBE DID IT BETTER... which becomes NAH LEBRON etc...

Its seriously pathetic.

That was an amazing dunk from JR:rockon:

I think the retarded kobe/lebron trolls should be banned when they post in a completey unrelated thread and ruin it:banghead: :banghead:

I can't believe so many sallys here are actually arguing about the exact degree measurement. Give me a ****ing break. It was a great dunk and will be treated as such.

That's a full 360 play. His head was turned to his teammate, but when he left the ground his body was toward the basket, and in the act of catching the ball and dunking it did a full 360. That's crazy athleticism, and timing

i think you have to take context of time into account..You whip out a startac 10 years ago and people get jealous. you whip out a flip phone now and you got the cheap basic phone.

I thought JRs dunk was sweet, but not as sweet as the hype on page one made it seem. handful of better dunks this season already..

Lol this aint no 360 this was more of a 90 degree dunk
When he catches the ball he barely turns and just dunks it
He jumped like 270 from ground but 90 off the lob.
Far from impressive tho
probably wasnt even number 1 on sportcenter ha

Karple where o where did I say i was not impressed? You cant find a post in here that says nor implies it. All I did was question whether or not it was a 360. I say its not, then if you stopped being a crybaby and man up will notice I gave the play props. Citing the difficulty in which he took his eyes OFF the basket to get the back, turn and dunk was applause worthy. Yet I dislike JR Smith and you know it. Seems you are so emotional you cant think straight. Nothing you say makes sense because all you care for is everyone to rejoice a dunk done by a f*cking Nugget. You're that much of a fan?

In short if you dont feel like reading all of that above? Stop being a bytch. Damn.

Sick dunk JR...these fools dont know what they are talking about

JR did a complete revolution. the catch & dunk itself wasn't a 360 but from the direction JR jumped to about where he landed was a 360 jump. I bet about 99% of the people who talk sh** about 360 dunks can't even do a basic dunk let alone a 360. if you can't do better than JR, then don't talk sh** about it!

I am uncertain as to what we're trying to accomplish by measuring the degrees of J.R. Smith's dunk. I ask this sincerely, what dunker has set the standard for what is to be deemed a true 360 dunk?

I do not understand if you guys are suggesting that a player must be running directly toward the bucket, jump with both feet facing the bucket, then complete a full revolution and dunk exactly in the starting point in order to receive a 360 classification. If anyone is looking to maximize spin off of a jump, they will begin their takeoff with their feet pointed in the direction they want to go. Trying to spin by taking off with your feet straight vs. slanted (aka breaking the "full 360 plane") will provide vastly different results.

I'm wondering if something is just being lost in translation here. In my time with the game, someone running toward the basket who takes off in stride, spins in the air, and then finishes with a dunk facing the basket has completed a 360. I guess if one has worked their way through elementary school and discovered that "360" refers to a full circular revolution, some confusion may arise when it's noticed that most spin dunks aren't full circles.

To me, a "360" is just the name of spin dunks that are finished facing the basket again. I do not like to get too technical with the names. "Windmill" dunks do not have to convert wind power and grind up grains. "Reverse" dunks do not have to be completed while running toward the basket backward.

Again, I guess it's just open to interpretation. Maybe dunks we used to refer to as "360's" need to be redefined as "spinzies" or "twirly gigs" so there's not so much mass confusion.

Best post in here. This guy acting like he could pull that dunk off. I could be wrong and you could be actually extremely athletic but I'm guessing that's not the case.

Pull out the video camera and post that shit on youtube.

Give me a week or so(my knees are wrecked from walking around LA and not staying in shape) and I'll put the vid up. Save this post and I'll be honest if I don't/can't do it. I have a Flip MiniHD, too. Fair enough?

What's funny is he doesn't even take into account that it was a FAST BREAK against NBA caliber talent and it probably wasn't even planned. "OMG I COULD EASILY DO THAT!"

You know what if you can pull that off on a regulation hoop than I will seriously take back my words and admit I was 100% wrong. But let's not forget that goofing off in the gym is MUCH different than pulling that type a play off during an NBA game

Still I'd be impressed if you pulled it off :lol
