ok, so the album leaked. i had a blazed evaluation session last night. gunna do it again and post my thoughts, but so far i'm LOVING it. i'd say it's a mix of her last album and baduizm: lots of rhodes and piano, but with an experimental edge. the last track (10 mins) absolutely blew my f*cking mind.

track by track:

1) 20 feet tall - discordant, ethereal rhodes drive this track. very bare bones; it really shows off e's vocal riffing ability. she croons almost like she's chanting a mantra in a temple. some smooth, light strings and synth bleeps and bloops fade in intermittently.

2) window seat - beautifully eqed drums by ?uestlove. more rhodes spliced with piano and a chunky bassline. amazing melody. picturing that ass in my head as i type this :oldlol: i love badu's voice in this.

3) agitation - synthy bloop intro rides into a frenetic, high octane piano/organ riff. love the harmonies in the chorus. george clinton synth stabs meet hi-hat flourishes perfectly. over too soon.

4) turn me away - this is my shit! bouncy funk bassline with dope hand clap snares. badu talking about gold-digging but sweetening up the deal with her vocals.

5) gone baby, don't be long - WOW, ill beat. instantly my favourite off the album so far. almost has a dilla-esque 'players' do wop feel to it. erykah's vocals have this slight flanger over them that really smoothens the out. that guitar is EXTREMELY dope. i can see this getting heavy summer rotation.

6) umm hmm - not sold on the chorus, but the verses are great. strings plucks aren't used enough in music as a counterpoint to keys, etc. sexy bassline that could take anyone to bed. 9th wonder beat played out live?

7) love - meh, dilla beat is my least fave so far. still not bad, but very raw. could've done with more instrumentation in there IMO. badu sounds like she's a schoolgirl singing in the playground.

8) you loving me - nice little piano interlude. gold-digging theme reappears.

9) fall in love - HAHAHA singing about changing dudes when they go out with her! i love that she sings about her reputation! very infectious track, gets stuck in the mind quick-fast. awesome dilla-esque beat, this has to be karriem riggens.

10) incense - awesome harps! i'd love it to be slightly longer, but that's only because i'm in love with the production on this. reminds me of nag champa.

11) out of my mind, just in time - sounds like green eyes part two. amazing intro portion; she is such a siren. amazing piano/violin duet. she really does have the most soulful voice out of any of the souls singers nowadays. second section is crazy, not sold on it but it still intrigues me. final movement is great; all soaring guitars and vocal highs.

overall rating 9/10. favourite album of the year so far.
