On a night when the Denver Nuggets should have been celebrating a much-needed victory over the Portland Trail Blazers, the franchise continued to struggle with off-the-court issues when an April Fools' Day joke sparked anything but laughter.

During Denver's 109-92 victory, a former Nuggets ball boy, Laquan Johnson, got into the club's locker room, took Kenyon Martin's car keys and filled the player's Range Rover with buttered popcorn. The car had a white interior.

Martin discovered the damage as he was about to exit Denver's Pepsi Center. At the time, he had no idea who had pulled the prank. Angered, he went back to the locker room spewing profanities and threats at teammates and other members of the organization.

"That ain't no [expletive] joke," Martin said. "I'm going to find out who did it ... put my [expletive] hands on one of y'all. I'm going to put my hands on whoever did it. You better believe that. It's [expletive] personal. You better believe it."

Martin, who has missed 15 games with a torn patella tendon in his left knee, threatened to boycott the postseason if he did not find out who was responsible.

"How 'bout if I don't play in the playoffs until somebody tells me who did it," Martin said more than once.

Martin stormed in and out of the locker room several times, and a person close to him said his anger was not over the prank, but over the fact that someone could go into his pocket and take his keys during a game. Realizing the culprit had to have access to the private code for the team's gated parking lot, he assumed members of the organization either pulled the stunt or assisted in it.

"The fact that no one saw it or had anything to say about it -- not security, not the equipment manager," a person close to Martin said, explaining the player's anger. "Somebody had to see it. He was wondering how the organization let something like that happen. What if the kid had really wanted to do something evil?"

Later, Martin found out Johnson, the former ball boy who is now the driver for teammate J.R. Smith, was responsible. Johnson apologized to Martin and agreed to pay for the damage to his car.

"It was just an April Fools joke that went horribly wrong," said a member of the Nuggets organization who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "The kid thought it would be funny and it wasn't. Kenyon was back at practice today and everything was fine between him and his teammates."

The episode was the latest in a string of distractions Denver has had to deal with lately. Once regarded as the Western Conference's top challenger to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Nuggets have all but fallen apart down the stretch.

With Martin out and coach George Karl missing games while getting treatment for throat cancer, Denver had lost five of six games before defeating Portland. That stretch dropped them from the second seed to the fifth seed in the West.

Martin, who cannot guarantee he'll be healthy for the playoffs, said before Thursday's game that he hopes to return for the last regular season game or two.

Looks like somebody took it too seriously. Somebody should apologize for wrongly blaming members of the Nuggets organization and using such language. Yeah, it was a mistake on the ballboy's side, but taking it personal and making him pay for some popcorn "damage"?

Looks like Kenyon Martin is not somebody you can play a prank on. The ball boy should have played the prank on somebody else like Billups. I doubt Billups would take it personally and act like THAT. He is a true class act that I respect.

Everyone doesnt react to jokes like you want. I could make a funny joke about your mother and you might not find it funny. Its just a joke so get over it, yet you still arent laughing and thinks its funny. Nothing like a person who in thier mind is convinced "Its a joke get over it, why are you upset" as if the person has to feel that way. People have lines they dont want others crossing. Just because you cross those lines and shrug doesnt warrant it being ok. Thats basic common sense. Everyone doesnt participate in Aprils Fools but according to you they either should or expect being pranked and getting over it.

You have limies and lines you dont want crossed. When someone does it at the expense of laughs? You're not going to be cool with it. Kmart doesnt enjoy the fact someone stole his keys from his personal possessions and then damaged his car. Buttered popcorn on the interior? Who is cleaning that out? Now it could have been done to JR Smith and he find it funny. Doesnt mean Kmart has to find it funny. And I bet if they did it to Karl or someone in the front office/owner they wouldnt find it funny probably.

He's lucky he didnt get punched in the face. How does he have access to the lockeroom anyway?

And Kmart isnt someone to play around with...

http://www.realcavsfans.com/showthread.php?t=23420

Notice Lakers fans egging him on. As mentioned of all people to joke around with you choose Kmart? Bad decision. And some people are conscience certain folks wont take a joke lightly and do it anyway. The point is everyone isnt funny to everybody. And he's lucky Kmart didnt act a fool making people really slam him.

"Innocent kid!"

Of course reacting violently would be extreme but would you put it past KMART? I wouldnt.

This is a common joke among pro sports players. Hes a millionaire. It's a ****ing ballboy. Kmart is an idiot for reacting this way, and you are too if you think its okay.

Everyone isnt open to jokes. So common joke among pro sports players is about as silly as "Mom jokes are normal, just laugh not serious". Some people have no issue with you joking on thier mothers, others do. The only idiot is the personal driver, former ball boy.

Goddamn prank? It's a Goddamn 100,000$ + car heavily equipped, and they'll have to replace the entire interior since it's white not to mention the oily butter soaks into the carpet, leather, everything. It's not like he messed with some sneakers.

And while it's a common prank, it also usually ends in bad reactions like this, especially when being done to a vet. Donta Greene of the Kings had to be separated from whooping Bobby Jackson's ass when he found out BJax took his keys and did the same thing. Then he retaliated on Jackson's car and Jackson went looking for him after practice to fight. Same team did it to Jason Thompson too who took it much better

Martin upset about popcorn prank

After a complete "de-ionizing" of his Range Rover, Kenyon Martin, anticipates that the popcorn smell is gone, but smells it again, and discovers it has not. Kenyon then tries to sell the car because the odor has taken a life of its own and permeated everything, but the dealer claims he cannot sell such a car. When it cannot be sold, Kenyon winds up abandoning the car and its keys out on the street just to get rid of it, even going so far as to encouraging a man on the streets to steal his car, however the same man ends up being disgusted by the smell.

I think that Martin should make a more feasible compromise with the kid. The kid was wrong to pull that prank, but its a common prank among people in the NBA, and I'm guessing he was just trying to fit in. But I imagine that Martin's car is very expensive and fixing the damage is cheap by NBA standards and expensive by non-NBA player standards, thus making a kid pay the full price for trying to fit in seems harsh to me. Maybe make the kid pay $500 or so, plus do something for Martin that is non-money related. Maybe, handwashing Martin's car once a month for the next couple of years or something (all depending on the price it takes to fix the car, the more money it costs Martin, the more the kid becomes his b*tch).

Popcorn was wrong to do. Styrofoam noodles, basketballs, golfballs, or something like that which couldn't have ****ed up the car would have been appropriate. However I'm sure idiot Martin would have reacted the same way even if it was something that caused no damage.

Juges8932

Well, my take on it:

I think the ball-boy must have felt comfortable with Kenyon and felt they had a friendly-enough of a relationship to do something like that. When I read that it was buttered, I agree, that was dumb. I don't think that regular unbuttered popcorn would be a big deal at all. Maybe it was just the fact that somebody was able to get Kenyon's keys and do that.

As for Kenyon making the kid pay. Under most circumstances I would understand, but Kenyon is rich and this was done withOUT malicious intent. He was doing a prank and was dumb. I don't have a problem with Kenyon making him pay, but if I was in that position with millions in the bank and the intentions weren't malicious, I would probably let it go.

I agree with those saying that just because they are rich doesn't mean they don't have rights to privacy or w.e.

And those who think he's lucky Kenyon didn't "break his jaw"; that's dumb. A stupid prank doesn't deserve getting drilled in the jaw.

He can be pissed but to make those dumb threats is really ridiculous. Its not like a random stranger fcuked his car up. Obviously he knew the guy and has some sort of relationship with him. The guy needs to just chill. Life's too short to be ready to break a jaw over popcorn in your car.

I wouldn't have reacted as angrily as Martin did but I would have definitely held that kid accountable if he did that to my car. Not only is this vandalism and disrespect, but that kid needs to learn that some shit isn't acceptable. It is not ok to deface another person's property just because you think that stupid shit is "funny." "April fools, not go pay a grand to have your car cleaned." That's ridiculous. Martin didn't spend a hundred thou (or whatever) on that truck just to have some stupid kid **** with his upholstery.

No one is saying its acceptable. You have to know who you are messing with if you plan on doing something like that. Its was a dumb error on his part. But overreacting the way Kmart did is just not the adult way to handle this. I honestly think Kmarts reaction is more ridiculous than the actual prank. The ball boy should definitely be held accountable, but I honestly believe that there were others in on it. Maybe JR, he is his driver anyways.

Even with this though, it's on the outside. Run it through a drive through car wash, sure it's not going to be great for the paint job but it's not a multi thousand dollar replacement job either, not to mention Greene could pay for it if needbe

few questions

1) WTF does putting popcorn in a persons car have to do with April Fools? isn't April fools are lying/misleading people?

2) It would be piss ANYONE off if someone took something from your personal locker and you know it was someone you knew and they wouldn't admit it -- if you did the prank, why not just admit it?

3) Its easy to say Kenyon overreacted looking back at the situation, but I can't personally say I would handle it much better if someone went into my personal space, stole my keys, nobody was admitting to it, and filled my white interior with buttery popcorn(almost impossible to clean) on a day that has nothing to do with pulling pranks to that extent.

That's a good point. Filling someone's car with popcorn is definitely more of a rookie hazing thing than an April Fool's thing.

The guy who played the 'prank' is so damn dumb. A prank is putting a water bucket above your door so it spills on you, not a rock so it hurts you. Want a good april fools joke for a player? Have the team management talk with kenyons lawyer and print out an edited version of their salary agreement, give it to him and say that there was a mistake originally and instead of 18 mil (example) it's actually 1.5 mil a year. That could be funny.

oh the horror
04-03-2010, 06:50 AM
Goddamn prank? It's a Goddamn 100,000$ + car heavily equipped, and they'll have to replace the entire interior since it's white not to mention the oily butter soaks into the carpet, leather, everything. It's not like he messed with some sneakers.

No kidding. Are some of you kids fu*king stupid or something? Just because you've got money to blow, it doesnt mean you should just go out there, and blow it. Do any of you know how much replacing an entire custom interior probably costs?

But hey, hes got money, so fu*k him right?

Some of you are ridiculous. That isnt a "prank"....thats just flat out vandalism and stupid. A prank should be funny and shrugged off....Not COST YOU thousands of dollars to repair, or replace property.

I'm suspicious of all of this. A former ball boy/driver really thinks it would be ok to break in to a players car and fill it with popcorn? I think it's more likely that J.R. Smith and maybe some guys got together to do this, and when Kenyon flipped his shit, they got the ball boy to fall on his sword. It makes way more sense for a player to do this to another player. In fact, considering how fast this was squashed, I wouldn't be surprised is JR fessed up and apologized to Kenyon or something along those lines, and they both decided to lay it on the feet of the driver so they don't end up with some kind of Arenas like hubub. It doesn't make sense that a ball boy/driver would do this and that after Kenyon went ballistic, he would suddenly calm down and things would settle down without the driver being banned from the premises.

I agree that this prank goes beyond good humor though. Damaging another persons property is not a good spirited prank no matter how rich the guy is. I could easily afford another pair of shoes, but if someone filled them with buttered popcorn, I'd probably be pretty pissed off... and I don't even wear nice shoes.

On a side note though, kind of a ***** move to threaten not to play in the playoffs. The team seems to have a legit chance this year.

this dude, smh

to make that kid pay for it? this happens to people all the time, why do YOU have to be a *****. youre rich as ****, get over it

You can tell that is guy is a poor man who doesn't own anything of value.

How do rich people get rich? They don't piss off money unnecessarily. When you buy a nice car, you take care of it to maintain maximum value and also to ensure it gives tip top performance for your money. You don't just throw it aside and laugh off and say you can get a new car because you're rich.

If someone fills my car with popcorn, he'd better be able to pay for it. If he can't then that's not a prank for him to be pulling. From your mindset I really hope you will never win the lottery as you are obviously the sort who will piss it all away and end up ruining your life further.

If it truly was the ball boy/driver then I doubt he even knew that it would damage the car. He probably got the popcorn from the arena during the game and did it without thinking. However I wouldn't be surprised if it was one of the players who either did it or were completely behind it and are forcing that guy to take the fall.

Who gives a f*ck about under the hood? No one is arguing if they are good cars or not. The argument is when did Range Rovers become a females car. You claimed they always been. I said no they havent. If they are in your neck of the woods? Kudos. America is a big place. I've never heard anyone say Ranger Rover = womans car until now. So you can pop the hood and break down the engine, the makeup of the car til your lil heart is content. Has zero to do with what is being discussed here. We're talkin about how males only drive Range Rovers because females like them. What does that have to do with the Range Rover being a females car? Beyond me.

And this to a guy that personally flew to Haiti after the earthquake to serve food and help suffering people. Where was KMart? And now Martin is flipping out because someone put popcorn in his car. It has to do with the quality of human being... He was insulting a good man for no good reason. Remember when KMart flipped out because Cuban talked trash with his mom? The guy is a child. He wants to be able to say what he wants and do what he wants but still be treated with kid gloves.

Just because Zo is a "good man" now doesn't mean he was one a decade ago.

Cuban talked trash about K's mom? Then he had every right to flip out.

Oh yeah, it got really nasty between those two.

No one would allow Mark Cuban to talk trash to thier mom. No one. And if by chance you are that one person who would? Shame on you. Terrible example on your part.

My mom can take care of herself. Unless someone is openly threatening or belittling my mom, of course I'll let her handle it. Furthermore, if she started it, who am I to get in the way? Let's say she's standing there shouting insults at someone. Should I get angry if they shout insults back? (I expect this is how it went.) If I have any kind of dignity, I become embarrassed and ask her to calm down. What I *don't* do is threaten violence, which seems to be KMart's go-to move.

And this doesn't change the fact that KMart was a bigger asshole and, when confronted about it by Mourning, threatened to beat his ass. And they were *teammates*.

The video is, or used to be, on Youtube. Zo was talking shit to him and Richard Jefferson after beating them in a windsprint then made some comment about how he doesn't think they're very tough for missing games with injuries. Then Kenyon said something like, "ow my kidneys" back to him. It's not like Kenyon just decided to show up one day and roast on Zo.

If that's true, it does change matters. Re: the prank, I think it was a pretty stupid move on the part of the ballboy. No defending that. If prank's aren't inventive, breaking the fourth wall material, they're generally useless.

You should just summarize every thread that gets to 5 pages, and every 5 pages. It would make skimming threads way faster.

Oh, and in your next summary for this thread, don't forget to mention your summary and this random picture I found on Google:

So. Yeah

Not anymore than it is now. Should be a lot less like 0-10%. Government funds too much bullshit.

People with more money should be taxed more.

So. YeahThe US tax code is setup so that we are taxed progressively. Which means that people with higher incomes are taxed at a higher rate.

Yeah, and threatening people is not the best way to get somebody to admit it was them. I know if K-Mart said "Admit it if it was you and I will put my ****ing hands on you!" I would not admit it. :lol
