All-time is a dumb list because hip hop hasn't seen nearly the same amount of successful artists as other genres due to how new it is...compared to other genres so I'm just going to make a list of my favorite to listen to...

1) Jay-Z
2) Big Daddy Kane
3) Nas
4) Big Pun
5) Kool G Rap
6) Notorious B.I.G.
7) Big L
8) Sean Price (Ruck)

Oh I was listing it based on favourite to listen to not skill. He doesn't even write his own lyrics lol. I really just like the way his tracks are produced, lyrics are acceptable, and overall its just usually a nice listen.

4. Lupe Fiasco

These guys are probably the smartest rappers. I don't see anybody having deeper lyrics. There are great lyricists like Rakim but...I don't see myself thinking or analyzing as much as I do when I listen to them compared to Canibus, Jay, Nas or Lupe. These guys are in a class of their own lyrically which is all I'm really focused on at the moment. Listening to Canibus in itself is a lecture.

GZA and Pun shit on all those guys lyrically. The only reason I rank Nas higher is because he has a stronger catalogue than both.

Making a Top 10 list is damn hard to make but I'll give it a shot:

1. Pac
2. Jay-Z
3. DMX
4. Nas
5. Biggie
6. Snoop
7. Eminem
8. Joe Budden (Man is slept on like no other, up there lyrically with anyone that has ever touched a mic.)

I think Pac at #1 is un-debatable but you could interchange the order from 2-6.

In the conversation: Beanie Sigel, Wale, Chuck D, Rakim, Big L, Papoose, Kayne West, Common, LL Cool J, Jadakiss..

Lupe there isn't even an argument. I am a big fan of him but he's nowhere near the level of any of the other guys that are in this discussion. Canibus you can make an case for, but I really don't have time to get into a debate. However if someone held a gun to my head and said get a rapper to give me 16 of the hottest bars I've ever heard I would call up GZA and Pun before I did Canibus. Whatever though, this is pretty subjective.

As do I for the most part.

I'm just saying that the top 10 has to have cats that write their own lyric IMO.

TI has his own publishing company I believe he wrote almost a whole album for Bow Wow.

If you close your eyes and listen to Fresh Azimiz you can tell TI wrote it.

You are aware that Snoop and Dre have ghostwriters?

For example the song "Still" was written by Jay-Z and most of Dre's popular NWA [timeframe] verses were penned by Ice Cube and DOC.

Snoop has also ghostwritten for Dre. Snoop can spit, and that is proven by his legendary status. Snoop's whole last album(the one before Malice) was ghostwritten, he came out and said it. He said he purposely did it like that so other styles could shine through and he could get different flavor in his music. What I'm saying is that Snoop and Dre have ghostwriters for different reasons.

Kool G Rap & Big Daddy Kane are both better than Tupac...

In terms of just rhyming words, yeah for sure. Those two are quite possibly better than everyone.

I like Snoop and all but his best lyrics can't hold a candle to rap's upper echelon.

Snoop has gotten his legendary status through charisma and image imo.

Yeah his voice(top 3 imo), delivery, swag, and smoothness definitely outweighs what his actual rhymes are. He just flows...he doesn't really do the metaphor thing...Doggystyle definitely inspired Jay-Z to drop Reasonable Doubt though.

That being said, I think legacy is important when ranking anyone, that's why I put Snoop up there so high.

Legacy/prestige are an illusion.

The only thing that matters in my book is skill.

Snoop is actually one of the biggest sellouts/clowns in rap history. He will sign on to do anything for the $$$.

So how would you rank the top 10 NBA players ever without legacy? Unless you are saying that the most highly skilled players achieved the most accolades...but then you would have to agree that the most skilled rappers achieved their status the same way.

And by multi's, he is talking about the multi-syllable/word rhyming within the bars instead of just the last word rhyming.

In terms of skill I've always been kind of conflicted with Slug. I like him and I enjoy his and Ant's music, but his flow and technique don't blow me away. Plus, I think sometimes he rhymes the same word with itself, as in, "I think it's great how you used to be great". Though, I guess he can be a sort of hybrid at times. As in, I don't think he's always trying to spit hot fire.

Again though, he might not be techinically ballin', but I like Slug's music, so he'd make my list of rappers I enjoy listening to right now. And if someone else mentioned Zach De la Rocha then I guess he's fair game too, right?

Can someone explain to me how Mos Def was better then Rakim?

Rakim's got that stone cold (borderline monotone) delivery. The guy basically revolutionized cadence and flow, he definitely fathered in a quality of fluid lyricism that was the groundwork for the incredible music of the 90's and most good hip hop today. A lot of bravado and a majority of the content is about how unstoppable he is. I can't argue with anyone having them on their list but I don't like how it's become sacreligious to leave him (or KRS or Tupac) off of top 5/top 10 lists. I also can't believe that all the teens and 20 somethings on this board are really that into Eric B and Rakim. My favorite musician of all time was dead before I was born so I'm not suggesting "you had to be there" to love it, I just think it's a name some of you feel like you're supposed to add to legitimize your list.

Mos brings a more soulful delivery and just has a lot more personality than Rakim in my opinion, a lot more relatable. He definitely wants to be Curtis Mayfield or Marvin Gaye sometimes but his diversity of style and subject matter, sense of humor, sense of humility, and more relevant lyrics just make him more appealing to me than Rakim.

follow the leader (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95gP3m-uBHA) versus mathematics (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycJ5m5Mt9JE)

Agree that Mos is definitely a descendent of Rakim but the evolution is an elevation.

1a. Biggie- best flow ever; sounds like every song is off the top of the dome; you can feel his personality in the music
1b. Nas- best storyteller descriptive rapper; best album ever illmatic
3. Tupac- raw style and inspirational thinker
4. Big Pun- watch this shit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suz9OcikZW4&feature=related every song by this guy is pretty much as raw and crazy, never seen a faster flow with about the most descriptive vocabulary you'll ever hear
5. Big L- again watch this freestyle (best ever)- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9M0WiuaqCLI
6. Jay Z- f!ck his new shit, listen to unreasonable doubt, I'd say second best album behind nas'. I could listen from beginning to end and be more than satisfied the whole way.
7. Rakim- unique smooth style; crazy finesse.
8. Eminem- as raw as tupac; one of the best freestylers of all time
9. Mos def- great thinker who puts meaning into his ryhmes; raps from the heart.
10. Wu tang crew- some of the sickest beats I've ever heard along with great flow; too many funny metaphors and analogies in songs, cracks me up.

Out of top ten that I really like:
Mobb Deep (prodigy)- shook ones part 2, survival of the fittest, quiet storm are all up there with my top songs ever.
Busta Ryhmes-unique as hell; raw voice, remarkable flow at a fast frenzy pace.

Blueprint was/is so overrated.

Why is it better than Black Album. Black Albums production is better and it has more bangers.

No it's really not. During the time when Source Magazine was credible both It Was Written and Reasonable Doubt were rated 4/5 stars. It Was Written received more sales too... Clearly more popular with people and the only reason IWW was looked on as slightly less favorable than Nas' first album was because of the different route he took.

Illmatic>IWW>RD>Stillmatic>BA>BP

Illmatic is the typical "Oh every one says this album is the best so I say it is too" and I know I wasn't the first one to say this about this album. And it's a great album but it doesn't mean that it's not the most overrated because anything with this many blind followers just has to be. Nas is my favorite/second favorite artist of all time so I have no reason to down talk some of his album.

I would have Reasonable Doubt over Illmatic anyways because Illmatic's beats juts don't come off as hip hop to me and they sound too...up beat/happy to me. Reasonable Doubt was darker and that is generally what I lean to in media. Not to mention 14 tracks> 9 tracks. There are also a handful of RD tracks that I will have clearly placed above Illmatic's best.

Also, I would say Blueprint had his best production out of his 3 major releases.

Whatever though, I say these guys aren't ****witable except by Eminem anyways.

wtf

illmatic is too happy? maybe 'life's a *****', possibly 'the world is yours', but beyond that? nah.

illmatic is untouchable. the beats are superbly minimal and are the perfect foundation for nas to spit his magma. if anything, the beats were slightly weaker on RD - 'ain't no *****', a couple of other joints (can't remember OTT of my head) are pretty poor.

i can recite that album pretty much back to front lyrically. other big hip hop heads i know/have met can do it too. reasonable doubt? classic album to me but there are a few corny tracks

No, it's not overrated just because you don't like it. The beats are too happy? No... The beats are a perfect mix, and come off very grimy. Like Tetris said, they were essentially perfect for Nas at that time.

illmatics beats feel somewhat simple and old school, and nas really tears it up on them. Reasonable doubt has the modern beats with the females singing; it's smooth but hard almost like rnb mixed with some bass, some hard hitting beats.

I don't even post in hip hop threads really anymore so I'm not spouting the same shit. Anyways I can use the same logic you used against me on you, so the beats were perfect because you liked them...? Plenty of people have called Illmatic the most overrated, even other Nas fans. I never heard of a Jay fan say Reasonable Doubt was overrated, maybe Blueprint or something but not RD. It just kind of goes to show the natural perception everyone has about the albums.
