The traiditional biggest fanbase of the NBA used to be white man between 20-50. It can not be denied though, that this fanbase has become dramatically smaller over the last 15 years. Many of those fans can't identify themselves with the Hip Hop Cultere that took over in the NBA. ( Just loook how TV ratings decrreaed over the last 15 years)

Everybody loves football(both inner city and rural america fan)
Nascar/Baseball/Ice hockey ( Mostly , appease to rural america fan)
basketball is mostly considered a inner city sport ( could explain your Claims).
