Name a movie that people would say "You've never seen this movie?" and they would be surprised.

I don't mean necessarily some classic movie from way back but something at least somewhat modern.

I'll give you two.

Never saw BladeRunner.
Never saw ScarFace.

So many to name it's quite embarrassing. I haven't watched a lot of great old movies and I haven't watched a lot of the new blockbusters.

Godfather 1 and 2
Goodfellas
Avatar
Never really watched any of Star Wars in their entirety
Iron Man
Transformers
Spiderman (only watched the first one, wasn't interested after that)
Never really payed any attention to the Pirates of the Caribbean films
Apocalypse Now
Schindler's List
Haven't watched any of the Lord of the Rings
Taxi Driver
Terminator
Alien
A Clockwork Orange

The list goes on and on.

Only watched Up and Wall-E within the last 2 weeks or so. Only just got around to watching Inglorious Basterds last night, which I feel disappointed about myself for, since I love most of Tarantino's work and I was determined to watch it in the cinema.

Also, only watched The Dark Knight about 2 months ago or so and thought it was serverely overrated.

My girlfriend said today that she'd never seen Shawshank, now that's a crime not to have seen that movie. I was actually quite shocked, since she's somewhat in the acting business, or atleast trying to be.

Any major blockbuster that comes out, I will most likely not see. Not because I don't want to, I just can't be arsed to do so.

I'm probably going to get roasted now for the amount of films I haven't seen, but should have.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I wouldn't say Miyazaki's movies are really much like anime, but not an expert on either. I'd say take a look at the trailer for Spirited Away, if you're interested, it'll be worth the time.

The best movie I've never seen goes to The Shawkshank Redemption. Highly revered and very emotional because I've seen pictures of a relieved looking Tim Robbins facing the sky (or god, perhaps?), I get teary eyed just thinking about it, something I know I'd be reduced to if I ever ended up watching it. But why don't I? Because I already know that Freeman & Robbins give performances that simply ooze simply the best according to critics, not to mention friends who have watched the film, who, I've subsequently grilled with topics covering 'what were the strongest and weakest points of the film' and 'how did you manage to sit through a 142 minute film without going to the toilet'. And because I'm a people person who trusts people, not to mention that I am a person, I trust them, so it comes as no surprise to hear that this film is number one on the Internet Movie Data base, or Internet Movie DB for short. I also tend to give any movie with a run-time over 90 minutes a miss, so their rating system comes as a blessed relief when in this fast paced and frenzied world, I have to pick a movie to watch. I mean, hello, were they wrong about the 4.6 rated Human Centipede, although I've yet to see that but the 92 minute run-time really put me off.

Godfather Part 2
Casino
Shutter Island

thats all I can think of, I'm not big on movies.

Those movies rank as

1. Citizen Kane
2. Godfather Part 2......However it's being more modern, it's much more accessible that Citizen Kane which I didn't really begin to like until I saw it again.....too much "greatest movie" baggage the first time I saw it.

50. Shutter Island. Very good recent movie, but nothing to lament if you haven't seen it.

200-5,000. Casino If you're expecting Goodfellas Two, you going to be disappointed. The narrative and the way it's told never really comes together. The backdrop of the casino world in interesting, but doesn't come near Goodfellas.

Vertigo

Seven Samurai
Yojimbo

Yojimbo is probably the easier Kurosawa movie to get into as it's shorter and it feels like a Western, especially if you've seen the westerns based on it.

I got to see Seven Samurai on the big screen and was kind of reluctant...as it's very long and it's ART. But I went with this girl I was into and.....man is that a good movie. Wait for the first joke.

The Ballad of Jack and Rose (2004)

Kind of a weird movie I thought. Really well done and Daniel Day Lewis kills it. Camille Belle and Paul Dano were pretty awesome in it too. Very well acted overall. Enjoyed it alot.

Daybreakers (2009)

Was kinda meh for me. Liked the idea of it but nothing special to me. Probably won't ever re-watch it again.

In the Bedroom (2001)

When I downloaded it, it came in two parts. Watched the first half than had something to do and never got to watch the second half. First half was really good and happy I saw this because I'll def re-watch it.

Boy A (2007)

Probably my 2nd favorite movie on the list. Garfield was excellent as "boy A" and movie really draws you in. Messed up movie but I was never not interested in what was going on.

Paranoid Park (2007)

Awesome that this is mentioned. In my favorite movies of all time. A bunch of actors that haven't really done anything nor went on to do much(sans maybe that Taylor Momsen girl but still not that great of an actress). Thought the one kid Gabe Nevins I think his name was played his part really well. Favorite Gus Van Sant movie. Really cool to see them portray a persons reaction in a realistic kinda way and how he deals with it.

Skateland (2011)

Reminded me of Adventure Land which I really liked. Not as good but still found it pretty entertaining.

Basically some kid is involved in an accidental murder or death and it shows how he goes on to deal with it while dealing with the usual stuff(divorce, his gf etc.) Basically how some kid deals with guilt.

would love to hear anyone strongly championing anything from my list...

National Lampoon's Animal House (1978)
This is probably the first movie, I would tell you to watch from your list. It's easily the most entertaining on your list. An absolute comedy masterpiece.

I assuming you have also see The Blues Brothers? Because that is also fantastic. This is just a landmark comedy and defined comedy for a generation. Hell, this movie defined people's identities and attitudes. John Belushi is incredible in it and the rest of the cast is very solid. It's an effective movie, because the direction is essentially played serious. This could have been another throwaway goofy comedy like they used make tons of in 70's. But the ambitions of this movie are much greater. The direction doesn't act like it's a comedy and it's all the more effective because of this. The musical score is a huge part of this. They actually got Elmer Bernstein to do the score who did Magnificent Seven (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLTHW0ZwK7U) and Sweet Smell of Success* (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfj364H8xYU). His score really gives weight to the movie and makes what could have been a goofy college movie define your choices in life. You can see what I'm talking about in the famous Pearl Harbour scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1qcae9rdZc). This movie is so effective it makes a bunch of frat boys at an elite college seem like underdogs and rebels. (This is because their enemies are even douchier set of elistist frat boys.)

I just put the DVD on in the background and I realize that a phrase my brother uses to this day to describe a healthy set of breasts is from this movie. She's got a pair of major league yabbos. and in the first ten minutes, I laughed more than in some complete movies.

I would be interested in seeing how this holds up for you, since it's been endless imitated and quoted.

The rock and soul soundtrack is fantastic too. The fake soul band they put together for the movie ended up becoming touring sensation and they still play (http://www.otisdayandtheknights.com/)

*(Have you seen Sweet Smell of Success? ...absolutely amazing movie about the power of celebrity done in a film noir style. I recommend it to ever serious film fan. And the score is incredible--big, brassy and mean which perfectly fits the characters.)

Lone Star (1996) quite good movie, a western for Modern life. My favorite movie from John Sayles, however is Matewan. Great movie about the union wars in a mining town.

In the Bedroom (2001)
I remember really liking this movie and the acting is terrific. Introduced me to Tom Wilkinson, but I don't remember too much else about it.

Gomorrah (Gomorra) (2008)
Depressing anti-gangster gangster movie.
Reading the book is a much better experience, that was eye-opening. One thing I liked about the movie is it gave me a look at modern Naples. They went out of their to not glorify gangsters unlike other movies, so the violence is pretty bleak. It's the anti-Scarface. Given that the Camorra still wants to kill the author of the book, I can see why they made this choice. It's a really angry book, by someone who grew up in a corrupt society where he felt his chances were ruined by gangsterism. Movie is still good though.

I wouldn't make the case it's best movie I've never seen ... I don't really know how to say a movie I've never seen is better than another movie I've never seen, let alone the best of all the movies I've never seen ... but that's a semantic argument ... but I will say it's odd that I've never seen The Titanic, considering I was in HS and College over the course of the 90s, and pretty much every person in my age range has seen that movie, most more than once.

The recent thing I want to see that I haven't is probably The Lives of Others.

To UK ... I have not seen most of your list, but a few.

National Lampoon's Animal House (1978): I can't say more than Kev said up there really. Comedies are tougher to get a consistent grade on for me, but this is funny, doesn't really feel all that dated either.

Synecdoche, New York (2008) - I'd be interested to get your take on this. I didn't like it as much as some people, but there's people who's opinion I trust who think it's the best thing ever. I felt it overreached a bit and was a little too abstract for my taste. But definitely worth checking out.

Snow Angels (2006) - A nice little flick. Extremely dark in tone, but extremely vivid in it's presentation due to the reflective quality of it's sets. I saw it on cable. I find myself stopping when I flip by.

The Squid and the Whale (2006) - I actually own this on DVD. I really like it. The awkward coming of age story is something that I seem to connect with, which is a little odd, because I really wasn't all that awkward. When he tries to pass off wish you were here as his song, it's brutal.

The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009) - Don't watch this. I've watched it. You shouldn't.

The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) - If there's an underrated Scorcese flick, this might be it. There's a lot going on here below the surface. I haven't seen it in a long time myself or really given it much thought. This gives me pause to jump in again.

Vertigo (1958) - See this. I'm sort of obsessed with Hitchcock, so I'd tell anyone to see anything by Hitchcock. But Vertigo is great even within the Hitchcock catalogue.

Dog Day Afternoon (1975) - This a ****ing great flick. It seems to get lost in the shuffle a little bit because lets face it ... a movie starring Al Pacino coming out in the mid 70s could be the fifth best movie of all time and still only be the third best Pacino movie of the mid seventies. It's kind of mixed in with so much other stuff from that era. I was late getting around to this myself, but I love it. It very much feels like something Mamet wrote. Because of the close confines of the bank being held hostage, it's really dialogue heavy, and it really feels like it could be a stage performance, like Glen Gary Glen Ross. It's incredibly tense. It just looks hot.

Titanic is nothing special. I really liked Dennis Leary's take on it. He said a few months after it came out he had a few hours to kill before meeting someone, so he said what the hell and bought himself a big sandwich went to see the movie. After finishing the sandwich he got bored and fell asleep and when he woke up, all the characters were freezing to death in the water and all the audience was crying and he started laughing his ass off and kept laughing as he walked out.

I really liked The Lives of Others, very, very effective movie

You aren't missing much with Iron Man 2. Citizen Kane is only worth watching if you pride yourself on being a movie history buff, but is otherwise very boring. American History X is great, definitely worth a watch.

Iron Man 2 is good and Citizen Kane is worth watching if you like great movies.

would love to hear anyone strongly championing anything from my list...

I'll avoid the ones that have already been talked about.

The Last Samurai - It's been some time since I've seen it, so I can't give details about it, but I can say I rated it highly.

Tales from the Darkside: The Movie - Mediocre movie. I only found 1 of the stories to be memorable (Lover's Vow).

From Bergman, I'd recommend: The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, and Hour of the Wolf.
I could also recommend a bunch from Hitchcock.

The movie was less prophetic. Have you ever heard of the Blade Runner curse? A lot of the advertising they used in the movie are companies that went out of business including Atari and Pam Am.

Well, I meant more in terms of the book by PKD, you should read it. It's got a lot of good stuff.

Not openly prophetic, but just like the way it has people waking up to "dial their mood" like how we are all taking cocktails of pills to control our emotions. Or the whole climbing the mountain while people throw rocks at you religion thing. I dunno. I think it was on point.

But yea that's weird about the advertising, but I think it was more the idea of the advertisements and not the actual companies.

Kind of a weird movie I thought. Really well done and Daniel Day Lewis kills it. Camille Belle and Paul Dano were pretty awesome in it too. Very well acted overall. Enjoyed it alot.

Was kinda meh for me. Liked the idea of it but nothing special to me. Probably won't ever re-watch it again.

When I downloaded it, it came in two parts. Watched the first half than had something to do and never got to watch the second half. First half was really good and happy I saw this because I'll def re-watch it.

Probably my 2nd favorite movie on the list. Garfield was excellent as "boy A" and movie really draws you in. Messed up movie but I was never not interested in what was going on.

Reminded me of Adventure Land which I really liked. Not as good but still found it pretty entertaining.

thanks for your recommendations

[QUOTE=KevinNYC]National Lampoon's Animal House (1978)

You could give a simplistic review of pretty much any movie.
ET: Alien gets lost. Alien gets found. The end.
Titanic: Guy and girl fall in love. Then, the boat hits an iceberg and sinks.
Psycho: Crazy guy murders at his motel, but finally gets caught at the end.

 thanks a lot for your breakdown man, have added mate wan to my list- looks superb and will get on il conformist quickly as per your recommendation.

Matewan, is the name of the town in West Virginia where the story takes place. It's not a bout a sickly friend. :oldlol:

It's based on a real incident where the coal company sent some "private investigators" or "gun thugs" (depending which side you were on) to evict miners who joined the union. The local sheriff, Sid Hatfield*, tried to arrest them because they didn't have a proper warrant and all hell broke loose.

A clip from a documentary about it.
http://www.wvencyclopedia.org/media/10520?article_id=1576

Here's a good video with a local historian telling some tourists about the Matewan massacre.**
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yH4bUn8H-6I&feature=related

*Sid Hatfield, was a descendant of the famous Hatfield clan involved in the Hatfield-McCoy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatfield-McCoy_Feud) feud along with

singer-songwriter Juliana Hatfield are actual descendants of the Hatfield family. Former New York Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni is also reputedly a descendent of the Hatfields.

**Almost 9 minutes he mentions one of the most famous West Virginians, Jerry West.

Never really payed any attention to the Pirates of the Caribbean films
Apocalypse Now
