it's one thing to mess around with music as a little side hobby, but another thing to have a successful and full-time devoted career in it.

wayman tisdale actually had a career in music after playing sports. his jazz album was even #1 on the billboards charts. might even say his music career was more successful than his basketball career.

Would you really call some of those guys "musicians"? I mean, Ron Artest's album sounded like complete shit, anyone with the right equipment and some money could do that.

I don't know man, but calling them musicians seems like a bridge too far.

Grant Hill plays jazz piano. I saw him on Letterman once and he's no slouch.

Matt Bullard (3-point specialist for the Rockets back in the 90s) is a pretty decent drummer.

Ok I'll admit there are rappers who are good musicians, like Wyclef, but I just didn't like how it was perpetuated that if one is a rapper that makes them a musician also.

wrong.

anyone who is composes, writes, arrange, and perform music... is generally called musicians.

but then again "the musicians" we are are the quality ones.

Rappers aren't musicians.

If a songwriter can be considered a musician, I don't see why a rapper can't be either. And I'm not talking about crap like Soulja Boy or Hurricane Chris.

I think it's pretty close-minded to say that only people who can play instruments are considered 'musicians'.

Oh, please. Most rappers steal beats, they don't compose shhhit. Only guys like Wyclef and Andre 3000 compose their own music/beats.

I'll say that most rappers are writers and lyricists. But not musicians.

Actually most rappers are just rappers. Some write their own lyrics and are songwriters. The rappers that sample beats are producers, and producers are most definitely musicians.

I'm not understanding this standpoint at all. Why arent they musicians?

They often don;t play an instrument, can;t read music and steal their songs. If you can make your whole song on a computer by sampling beats, you're not a musician.

In a band? You're a musician.

Can read music and sing like Celine? I consider you a musician.

In an orchestra? You're a musician

Okay, I'll give you 24 hours to make a beat and we'll see how good/bad it is since that anyone can do it.

Already have done it at university. It was easy.
That was about 8 years ago. Give it a shot, it's easy. You just need to be able to create a hook.

Rap is the music most often listened to murderers, rapists and thieves. It should be eradicated.

There's obviously a difference between sampling a beat (making it yourself) and stealing an instrumental from somebody else. In the first case, if you do it well and don't just rip the original song you are a musician imo.

BTW Cedric, not all rappers are misogynic retards who rap about their cars and hoes.

You're a musician

a) because it's your profession

or b) because you perform or write music

if it's b), then yes, they are musicians, but then so is everyone who has uses his voice to sing.

No. That stuff you're talking about only represents a tiny piece of hiphop. Anyway, 9/10th of singers you hear on the radio don't write their songs themselves, so why would you classify them as musicians?

If someone wants to call themselves an amateur musician, so be it. Just don't sing someone elses song, and call yourself an artist.

You guys can sit around arguing that rappers are musicians, but you won;t change my mind. I think what they do is talent-less and they lack class. You won't change my opinion, and I don't care what your opinion is.

I have friends of every colour the world over, and none of the, would call me racist for not liking rap music. Any intelligent or self-respecting person wouldn't be listening to that crap.

Even the folks at NBA2K10 realise that. Check out the soundtrack, Metric, MGMT etc. There is still rap on there, but it's not the class-less crap that the majority of Top 40 idiots listen to.

Common
Atmosphere
A Tribe Called Quest
Mos Def

... the list goes on. These rap groups are intelligent, classy, socially important and politically informed. Calling all rappers classless losers is like calling all basketball players criminal thugs. Ignorant, race-based mob thinking.
