My 53 inch vertical leap just came naturally. Sorry that doesn't help much.

just hit 21, im 5'8 flat, barely 5'9 in high tops. below average reach (even considering the normal population not athletes). I can nick rim on a very good jump and thats about it.

I can headbutt the ring. I just ate a lot of beef jerkey. It really helped with my training.

They have a vert test at the Rose Garden. Last time I went it was 22-24 inches. Jumping 44 inches is a god given gift, it's not something you can work to get unless maybe one day you can do calf raises while lifting a car.

okay, even then I just want to be able to do a simple one handed dunk. Thats my goal. I think I need at least a 35 inch vert to do that. Any of you guys know how to do that? Squats? Plyrometrics?

Search google for the Vertical Jump Development Bible by Kelly Baggett. Simple book with proper guidelines to get you on the right path.

Any healthy male can reach a 30 in very easily with physical training. Anything above 35 in takes natural talent. Anything above 40 in takes God given gift.

You probably won't even be able to dunk with 1 hand depending on your hand size. If you are able to get a high vert, you'll probably be one of those guys who can dunk 1 out of 5 times.

29 inches? Really? Do you mean standing or running? I got like a 7'2" or so standing reach and I can grab the rim with my max vert, can't dunk though.

Whats you height? You got a low standing reach. I think my standing reach is about 7'3 or 7'4 cant remember. I can only nick rim on a good day running start. 29 inches will be running start.

But anyway grabbing rims is nothing. I play with teens 5-5 to 5-11 and 50% of them could grab rim some could even dunk..

There are a lot of things you can do to improve your vert. There are also a lot of companies that will promise you impossible results. Dunking isn't essential to your game, but its a lot of fun. Squats and plyos help. Find a free program online, get to work, and keep at it.

I'm about 5'8" and my wingspan is basically what my height is, but I have bad knees so I'm not sure how high I could jump without the injuries.

If you can touch the rim with a 7'3" or 7'4" reach then your vert is over 29". Lets say your reach is 7'4", you'd need a 32" vert to touch the rim.

yeah, but I cant touch rim everyday. Plus I have lots of nagging injuries like sore ankles and knee that hinders my jumping. I would say on average my running vert is 29.

I just play a lot of basketball in which I go hard to the hole and I jump a lot. I also ride my bike a lot and over here you'd better be explosive to get out of trouble sometimes.

I can dunk the ball fairly easily, but considering I'm 6'3,5 with shoes and my standing reach is 8'1 and I can palm a ball I should pretty much windmill the damn thing I guess. Should really start weightlifting...

Look at Jordan's free throw jump, he had a 48" vertical, in an 80s interview that he gave he said that he never worked his legs out with weights. I don't know if that means he did any other type of exercises, but the implications were that his jumping ability was all from playing basketball. I also read that in a camp of future NBA players, he would refuse to get off the court to rest. So perhaps pushing yourself in basketball is the answer. Though you have to consider genetics.

just try dunking over and over again. My athletics coach used to tell me this one of the best and most simple methods to gain leaping ability

Jordan was reported to have a 42" Running vert when with the bulls. He was able to jump very far though in addition to jumping very high.

Carl Lewis was even more insane though, the man longjumped 29 feet and reportedly dunked from the college FT line during camp.

I agree with all the people here about just trying it though, I've never weightlifted or did anything and I have a 33" vertical.

Rope jumping, not in traditional way, but try jumping higher than normal. I dunno, but that halps 4 me.

Jordan had a 48" vertical, which I would have thought was exaggerated, but look at the manner in which he dunked from the free throw line. Vince had like a 43" and Lebron 44" and they've never dunked from the free throw line, just to put in perspective though perhaps it's because they never attempted it.

How did you measure your vertical just out fo curoisty. And what's your standing reach?

I'm 5'11 and I can barely touch the backboard on a good day. Man I got to start working out more. It doesn't really affect my game tho cause I'm not a slasher by nature.

There are machines and tests and there's napkin math. I've got a bruise on my arm from dunking the ball, which is about 10 inches down my arm. Then I know I've got a 8ft reach and a rim is 10ft. The bruise is where I hit my arm on the rim when dunking. So my vert is about 2 feet + 10 inch which is 33-34 inches.

At pretty much every training camp i've been to I've had to do the jump test where you hit the spinning things on the post. They record your reach and voila-there is your vertical. I can dunk a volleyball but I'm hopeless if I can't palm a ball cause a lot of my lift comes from my arm swing.

Vince is the best dunker of all time. Close, but shows that Jordan had those few extra inches necessary. 42" is not enough to dunk from the free throw line.

MJ is not the only player to dunk from the free throw line.

Pippen has done it too. along with alot of other players that I can't remember right now.

do they all have 48 inch verticals? I don't tink you need 48 inches to dunk from free throw line.

No, but they were taller and the taller you are, the even longer reach you have. Plus if you look at their free throw line dunk, Jordan does it more effortlessly, cocking it back, doing some movement with his legs while the others have to strain forward, some not even dribbling.

Well you're white. Nothing to do about that. Chances you jump high are 1/1000000.

Getting hops is not just down to genetics, they play a big part in it but if you really want to maximise your leaping ability you need to generate a lot of power in your legs.

Squats
Deadlifts
Powercleans
these should be the core of your training not calf raises. Make sure to pick one of those exercises in your workout ( give at least 72 hours rest before doing another leg workout) don't do all three in one go.

do 5-6 reps using a heavy weight with 3 sets.

Calf raises, lunges, side lunges, burpees, leg press these are all exercises that can be used to help but they are not gonna push you from a 29 inch vert to a 40. Stick to the compound exercises like I said.

Do plyometrics, keep your body fat down having extra weight will only slow down your progress.

P.S

Get flexible, if in doubt download/ buy p90x yoga that will really help.

Vertical Jump Bible is too long and complicated. You need a lot of equipment for it as well.
