View Full Version : Congrats NBA, you've lost yet another fan(warning long rant ahead)

Congratulations David Stern and the NBA, you've just lost another long time fan. It's finally come to the point where I can not, and will not watch another NBA game. At least not until they finally start doing something to change it. Unfortunately, I do not see those changes occuring anytime soon. It's has become clear to me that NBA games are no longer decided by a team's talent and skill, or their heart and desire, but instead by which pocketbook is bigger and what superstar is more marketable.
The loss of Michael Jordan caused the NBA to hype up any young superstar wing player in an attempt to replace what he was to the NBA. This led to the "pussification" so to speak, of the league and a new generation of fans who value nothing but showboating and high scoring. The rule changes during the midpoint of this decade helped to "pussify" the league even more. It's become virtually impossible to guard a player out on the perimeter because a foul is going to be called nearly every possession. I was recently reading a comment on these forums that actually stated that everytime Kevin Garnett took a swipe at Dwight Howard's hands, it should be a flagrant foul. Yes, I kid you not, they actually said it should be a flagrant. Is that what we've come to? Has the NBA become so soft and watered down that people are calling for that? The NBA wonders why they're losing money. They wonder why they're not as popular as the MLB, the NFL, and even the freaking NHL. The game has changed from when we used to enjoy it. I grew up in the 90's. I was too young to have witnessed the careers of guys like Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jerry West, Oscar Robertson, and countless other greats from past eras. When I started following the NBA, Larry Bird was hobbling into retirement and Magic Johnson caught HIV. I had always been around basketball since I was born. My dad was the head coach of the Girls Varsity basketball team at Manuel Arts High School in Los Angeles during the late 80's and early 90's. He used to bring me along with him sometimes at practice and I was at every game. Most of my passion for the game came from him. I've always liked to say that basketball was my first love. Even now as I'm older, girlfriends come and they go, but basketball always remains.
Watching the NBA now, I hate what I'm watching. This is no longer the game that I love. I hate what it's become. Strong, physical defense is no longer encouraged. Everything is all about who has the bigger star and who can draw the most fouls. It's not basketball anymore. It's disgusting watching someone like Ray Allen, a guy who gives his all night in and night out, be taken out of a game due to phantom fouls. It's disgusting watching players like Derek Fisher and Pau Gasol flop around like fishes out of water, trying to get calls and be rewarded for that. Meanwhile, a guy like Kendrick Perkins, who prides himself on defense and toughness, is rewarded with fouls. Probably the most frustrating thing, is the inconsistency. Certain calls are not given at the other end of the floor. For example, tonight I watched Pau Gasol attempt a dunk in the first quarter I believe. Kendrick Perkins recovered and was able to block the shot from behind. Pau screamed like a girl and fell down and of course, Perkins was given a foul. In the third quarter, Tony Allen went up for a similar play, and Kobe Bryant comes over and hits his wrist, causing him to miss the dunk. No foul was called. Another example, in the first or second quarter, I don't remember which, Glen Davis was at the top of the key setting a screen on Derek Fisher. He was stationary and Derek Fisher flopped and Davis was assessed an offensive foul. In the third quarter I believe it was, Pau Gasol came out to set a screen on Davis, hit him to the floor, and an offensive foul was not called, even though it was nearly identical to the Fisher/Davis play.
Whatever happened to the "no blood no foul" saying? My brother and I grew up playing heated battles of one on one, sometimes very late into the night. I used to lay a beating on him, and he would sit there and take it. Never once did he complain, he just went right back at me as hard as he could. We never would call fouls. For anyone who's seen He Got Game, that scene when Denzel Washington is playing a one on one game with his son at the park? That's how my brother and I were. That's the basketball I grew up with. Just the other day, he and I played one on one for the first time in a few years. Just like when we were younger, he and I were going at it, both of us laying a beating on the other. If someone were to play the way we play in the NBA, they'd foul out in a matter of seconds. One of the reasons I like the Celtics, is because they're bringing that physical brand of basketball back. Only in today's league, they're punished for it. Another reason why I like them, is because they play a team game, another thing that has vanished from today's NBA. In today's league, the majority of players have a "what can my team do for me" mentality instead of "what can I do for my team". It's given rise to a new brand of fans who worship a single individual and do anything to unjustly prop up the individual, often times at the expense of teammates and other players. The media and the NBA eat that up. I can't turn on any sports channel without having to hear a million times about Lebron James and his free agency. My dad brought up an excellent point today during the game. He said he preferred TNT's coverage because at halftime, they actually talk about the game and do real analysis. He, like myself, didn't like that stupid segment about Kobe that had nothing to do with anything, and he's a Laker fan. The average fan nowadays, loves crap like that. These fans are idiots, in every sense of the word. They know nothing about basketball or great players that came before. They are the PleezeBelieves, Desperados, Branslowskis, Lebron23s, and Canstops. They will put down former players or eras in attempts to unjustly build up their idols.
When I was younger, I was a huge Michael Jordan fan, as were most other people during the 90's. I didn't know much about Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, etc, but I found myself wanting to know about them, wishing that I could have watched them play. My dad was born in NY, but moved to LA as a teen in the 60's. He's got tons of stories about going to games at The Forum and watching Wilt and Russell, among others. As a kid I loved those stories and wanted to know more about how great they were. I know some of you think jlauber is a troll, and other than his inexplicable ranking of Kobe ahead of Bird, I actually value his contributions to this board, because he actually got to see these guys play and I enjoy hearing about it. Another, lesser known poster here is the Laker fan EllEffEll. I remember last year I called him the best Laker fan here by FAR. He too, has posted stories about seeing these guys play. I love learning more about these legends from the people who were actually there. These new fans don't appreciate that at all. They don't care about these true great players, and constantly put them down to hype up their idols. They don't want to know about these guys, all they want is for people to keep telling them how great Kobe or Lebron is.
So congrats NBA, you've officially lost yet another fan. I join the ranks of many who have left the NBA game behind. I guess that's what they want though, a bunch of mindless, moronic idiots who go along with whatever they say. People who don't have a clue about something as basic as a pick and roll and will continue to spend money on their Kobe or Lebron jerseys. They don't care if they don't know the first thing about basketball, as long as they can market Kobe and Lebron and these idiots buy into it. They don't care that they're slowly becoming the laughingstock of professional sports, if they aren't already. As a passionate basketball fan, I will probably still continue to follow my beloved Raptors, but from afar. Instead, I will get most of my fix from the NCAA like a majority of people are recently doing. The game is much better, and resembles more the one I grew up with. Players play hard, physicality is allowed, less fouls are called, team basketball is encouraged, there are no retarded fans, it's not about money. More than half the guys who play college basketball don't even have the NBA or professional basketball in their futures. They're out there for the love of the game. This year's March Madness was worlds better than this year's NBA playoffs. Sorry for the long rant, but I had nothing better to do tonight and just wanted to express my thoughts. I'm probably not going to watch the rest of the finals. I'll probably even watch the WNBA instead. Hell at least they play hard and they're a lot more physical. Their game is hugely based on fundamentals, and not flash. The fans aren't as stupid either. End rant, it's late and I'm going to bed.

My thoughts on it are simple....refs should not influence the flow of the game, ever. And I saw them literally changing the very flow, and rhythm throughout tonight's game being extremely whistle heavy, and calling outright ticky tack fouls. Both sides were literally having fouls left and right at one point...and initially it was because (imo) of Ron throwing himself on Pierce early on....So my guess was, they wanted to shut down physical play and keep players in check?
However....why the fu*k do they do that? CALL EACH INDIVIDUAL PLAY AS IT SHOULD BE CALLED. Why are OFFICIALS trying to make a point?

1. Ever since I was a kid, people have been complaining about the refs and fouls. About how the refs are stupid and they can't call the fouls right. Tick Tack fouls. MJ get every call and blah, blah, blah.
2. The league changes all the time. I think the 90s and 00s they changed the rules to stop centers aka Shaq for being able to take advantage of the paint as much.
They changed the rules again when the whole Piston-Pacers brawl. I think you should blame Ron Artest for the league changing so much. After that brawl, NBA changed a lot. They wanted to establish more of a non-contact league and increase the tempo.
3. The league always been a superstar league for as long as I can remember. The 80s showtime Lakers pretty much started the whole celebrities in the seats and stuff. I think as the league grow, they started to get more...hip or media attention? MJ really increased that in the 90s.
4. It seems like you are bad because of the 1st game of the finals?

You Americans have no idea how privileged you are with food. I'm an avid burger lover and in Australia there is literally nowhere to get an American style burger. The month I was in America was the best of my life not only because I like the American lifestyle but the food was amazing. I know this is completely off topic but I just want you all to appreciate how good you have it food-wise haha.

I read it(it looks long, but only takes 30-40 seconds to read, thankfully the grammar wasn't bad). I agree with you on many points.
But I'm still supporting the NBA.
Giving up, is giving up. No other way around it. If you want points like this heard, you need to stick around and praise your concerns.
Unfortunately the NBA will carry new generations of fans, and your boycott will not be noticed. Thats why it's better to stay involved.

Kobe Bryant really is a great player, but the league is tailored to star perimeter players. The only way to some it up is: touch fouls.
And you see Kobe, along with any perimeter player struggle when the refs don't call it tight. If Kobe is on and is getting those fouls like Ray Allen's 5th tonight, it's over. But if he isn't he will get frustrated and the Lakers chances of winning are up in the air.
That goes not just for Kobe, that goes for Pierce, Lebron, Melo, Roy, and Wade. It's much easier to shoot when you know you're not going to get touched or it's two free throws.

By far the best post I ve ever read on a basketball board:applause: :applause: :applause:

Sometimes 2 FT's are bailout calls, whether that's fair. "And 1" fouls are less likely to happen, and tonight LA was just stroking it around the rim. Even when they missed, they get a put back on the offensive bound.

clearly a raptor fan who dislikes the lakers and kobe...some of them are still not over the 81 point torching.
He talks about defense and how the lakers got ticky tacky fouls. ok i agree alot of ticky tacky fouls. but apparently boston did not get fouled even once, kobe blocking tony allen was a foul and ray allen did not deserve to get a single foul.
get your head out of your ass wanker. NBA does not need fickle fans like you. besides your a raptor fan you should be well rehearsed in watching girls play as you watch a pussified team in toronto.
take your pussification theory and get laid. not likely as you seem to have an IQ of a 3 year old. mommy mommy i want to go watch the pussified raptor team. mommy we will make it to the nba playoffs and we will win, and another thing mommy we will beat those lakers who destroyed us with one player..

It was. At one point, I remember just sitting there, throwing my hands up in the air, and just shaking my head. Literally there was a period of just FOUL-MANIA going on during the game....It was like...ridiculous to even sit through.
And while I enjoy the fact that LA won...its still one of those things where you sit there, and say to yourself...."wtf was that?"
When the officiating gets THAT heavy...it literally breaks the game's flow all up.

You're a joke that is not an automatic flagrant in todays NBA and more often than not they would just wait to see if the basket was made to call a foul or not. The OP used a terrible example. Perkins clearly fouled Gasol on that dunk attempt and it wasn't even really debatable. If he's talking about the play where the ball fell out of TA's hand when Kobe blocked it, then that also was not a foul and a good no call. I believe more times that not if it's a hack and the play is not completed then it is called. If the player is hacked and does not finish then they give him the foul call.

I don't think it would. But they should've called a foul on that play. You hear people praise the non-calls when in reality it was supposed to be a foul. About 20 years ago, it was the same thing. I think most fans will praise or hate the call depending on what team they are rooting for. The NBA fans are weird.
NBA fans get pissed off when they called the fouls and the NBA fans get pissed when they don't. If the refs keep it by the book, the NBA fans will get pissed because they would call too much fouls. As a NBA fan, you would realize how many people will say "This is the playoffs, you should let that go." That's being hypocritical and encourage more inconsistent calls.
The refs are inconsistent. They always been like that. And if the game was called how it was meant to be called then there would be a lot more fouls being called. They were tick tack fouls called 20 years ago and they are tick tack fouls called now.
This has been going on for decades. Couple of new things have been added, but the core of it is the same. People complained about the calls today, and people complained about the calls back then. Basically all of the complaints will sum up to this: same sh!t, different day.
However...back then they let them fight and push around a bit. They are scared to fight now. As I said before, blame Ron Artest and that beer guy. Those two changed the game. But that was the best brawl.

Except that's their friggin job! To manage the game and let the player decide the outcome within the games rules. If a game starts getting too physical they need to start calling more fouls. If a player starts getting too cute with the ball, they can start calling palming. But if a player palms it in the back court with no defenders... what's the sense in calling palming? If they called every single foul on the floor the game would be unwatchable, and the best players would be the ones that ran around carefully obeying the rules rather than the ones that were good at the game. It's a basketball game, not the SAT's. The game is meant to be fluid and dynamic. If a player takes an extra step in the back court when no one is guarding him, what's the sense in calling a travel when neither team benefited? If a defender bumps an offensive player in the paint and causes him to take longer than three seconds in the key, they could call the defender for impeding progress or the offensive player for 3-seconds. Or they could manage the game and call nothing. Sure this leads to some guy sitting at home screaming THREEEEEE SECOOOONDS!!! at the top of their lungs, but that's still better than stopping play for something so minor. People need to stop focusing on the letter of the law and see it as an advantage/disadvantage judgement call.

i agree with most of the OP. i'm annoyed the c's lost too. but you could see the celtics trying to sell fouls as much as the lakers. i will admit when pierce sold a foul i didn't mind and when gasol did they same it annoyed the hell out of me. but since the lakers won i guess their fans will forget them all. i'd be the same (and i bet the op would too) if it went the other way :)
but my real gripe is that it was THE most boring game of basketball i have watched all year. what was the point? why didn't they just play freethrow horse and call it a day? not long after allen sat down because of his 5th i stopped watching.
i agree with the op that as a 90s kid when i'd play ball a foul was only called when it was a deliberate forceful strike or push. obviously pro sports need to be more strict then that. but not to the point where the players should be running around in bubble wrap or driving in bumper cars.
i will keep watching the series but hopefully the refs don't slow the game down to a crawl next time.

i'm not happy about the calls that went the celtics way as much as the the calls that went the lakers way. i'm not complaining about the distribution of the freethrows i'm complaining about the fact that to many were called through out the game. i'd rather a nice flowing game as opposed to a game that stop and starts as much as an NFL game.

Burger King burgers EXACTLY the same as Hungry Jacks burgers.
There's little to no difference between those 2 establishments and Wendy's/other chain burger take outs in the states so how you came to that conclusion is rather strange.

If that's your mentality, then I'm glad you are leaving. You really sound immature in your paragraph talking about all of the calls last night. You try to lead-in and phrase it so you don't come off as the biased person you are.
FTs:
Boston- 30/36
Lakers- 24/31
Fouls:
Boston- 28
Lakers-26
Ray/Pierce- 5 each
Kobe/Artest/Gasol- 4 each
Odom- 5
That certainly doesn't represent the horribly one-sided non-call foul-fest that the Lakers put on Boston last night. Watching the game, it certainly didn't either. You hand-picked scenarios that you felt were unjust on ONE side of the ball. Were there some bad calls? Yes. Did it change the result of the game? No. The Lakers played aggressively all night (more-so than the Celtics) while the Celtics simply were not playing well at all. If you can't see that, then YOU don't understand the game of basketball.
Does Gasol flop? Sure, he has, and he did last night, but the foul was called AGAINST him (on KG). Does Fisher? Sure, he has flopped, but he has also taken charges time after time. Most of his "flops" are coming off screens that many could be argued as MOVING screens or where the screen-setter has their leg stuck too far out. And it's laughable, at best, that you try to pin the Lakers as this flopping team when the opponents team has Paul Pierce. It's not entirely PP's fault because he constantly gets rewarded for it with foul calls.
It couldn't be that KG had 4 rebounds the entire game (Of which he DIDN'T have foul trouble). Or the fact that KG, Perk, Sheed, and Big Baby accumulated 14 rebounds, equaling Pau's amount, the entire game. Pau had more offensive rebounds than the entire Celtic's team. The Celtics didn't play hard. Even the Celtic's players are blaming their effort and performance for the loss.
People often reminisce on the past as more favorable and better than what it actually was. I'm not saying this is necessarily your case, but to act like it wasn't a superstars league back in the 90s is asinine. You always hear about MJ's calls and blah blah. Was the league tougher back then? Yes, but to pretend that it was as if they were gladiators in the colosseum compared to a 5 year old's soccer game is a joke. The league has gotten softer, I'm not debating that. I'm simply saying that maybe you should go back and look at the body of work (As in more than select clips, like full games/series) before getting on your high-horse and talking about how call "X" would not of even been looked at back then and laughed off as a foul.
Also, give me a break. The KG on Dwight thing was absolutely ridiculous. He was smashing his forearm, twice within a few seconds. Should it be a flagrant foul? No, but by DEFINITION it could arguably be so:
A flagrant foul-penalty (1) is unnecessary contact committed by a player against an opponent.
A flagrant foul-penalty (2) is unnecessary and excessive contact committed by a player against an opponent. It is an unsportsmanlike act and the offender is ejected immediately.
It would be a shame to see that happen, especially in a playoff game and I wouldn't want that to happen.
Should it of been a technical? Arguably so. He was putting his body into it and hitting him with his forearm, blatantly obvious.
If you like NCAA basketball better, great. Go watch that, but don't spew ignorant shit like "It's all about the love of the game. It isn't about money." Are you kidding me? That is the most tired, cliche, and ignorant thing that gets constantly recycled by people like you. You think guys like Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Paul Pierce, etc get to the level they are out because they don't love the game? They don't have to dive on the ground, out of bounds, etc to save a point. They could just go out there, shoot their 15-20 shots a game and get paid. But no, these guys have the desire to be the best and it shows on the court. They play both sides of the ball, spend the off-season working their asses off trying to become better and stay in great shape. Kobe, after his 13th NBA season went to Hakeem to get a better post-game, but he only did that for the money. You don't think the NCAA has interests of their own? Maybe you don't see it, maybe you don't care, or maybe you don't think it is as prevalent, but there have been plenty of games with questionable calls when the high-market teams like Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, UNC, etc are in play. They don't try to promote superstars? All we heard about during the season was John Wall this, John Wall that. In the promos, it was ALL about John Wall.
So, if you don't want to watch the NBA anymore, then leave.

The OP is a f*cking clown, he always whines like a bitch in Laker gamethreads. The NBA would be glad to get rid of a "fan" like him. Nice to see not even one person is taking him seriously.
The thing is, the Lakers would've won anyway...no doubt about that. But what the refs did was take the excitement out of the game and try to make it all about them. I was waiting to watch a classic battle between the 2 teams...instead, the entire game was controlled by the refs. That son of a bitch Joey Crawford can't handle it if all the attention is not on him. I don't understand how the league could allow him to officiate a NBA Finals game? He should've been fired years ago.

how are you going to complain when your team actually shot more free throws, got our bigs in foul trouble, on our home court. SMH. Celtics fans are the most spoiled fans in the league they are not happy unless they have a double digit lead in FT advantage.
1. The Celtics aren't his team.
2. Fouls don't equal freethrows, and the fouls were almost even.
3. Our wings were in foul trouble.
4. You only see maybe 3 really shitty Celtics fans around, spudgay, kg5mvp, and maybe another. There seem to be very few Celtics fans around, yet you act like they troll the place. If anyone trolls the place it's Lakers/Kobe/LeBron fans.

They did influence the game.. But I won't be surprised if the Lakers get the same medicine.. I am looking for a long series.. The NBA refs can make that happen.. Then they will let the better team win at the end.. I believe the lakers are better no matter which way you look at them.. Their size and skill is just on a different level than any other team..
When the LaKERS got Artest everyone thought they would win 70 GAMES... Then they got injured and everyone thought they were done... Kobe and Bynum both look very good after their knees were drained and that makes them impossible to beat in a 7 game series..

Dude you need to chill.. The NBA is only a game.. There are more important things in life..

I lived in the states for 3 years in the early 00's.
USA McDonalds bugers EXACTLY the same as in Australia. Only difference is the US McDonalds sell hotdogs and pizza.
Burger King burgers EXACTLY the same as Hungry Jacks burgers.
There's little to no difference between those 2 establishments and Wendy's/other chain burger take outs in the states so how you came to that conclusion is rather strange.
Btw, McDonalds will make to order, order my creation, The McOcto. 8 patties, 8 pieces of cheese. I actually read the OP's post.. it was long and, not surprisingly, talked negative about all of the Lakers players and positive for all the Boston players.
When the Boston players played defensive they were gritty and tough.
While LA got bailed out on "every offensive possession".
Seriously don't bother writing if your going to be that blatantly bias.
I think the problem is that players like Durant, Wade, and Fisher, instead of trying to get a good shot, play with the sole purpose of getting to the free throw line. They try harder to get foul shots than to actually get a clean open look at the basket.
It's clearly a problem imo when you see durant/wade/pierce succesfuly pump fake, get the guy to jump up, then launch himself 5 feet forward into the defender, instead of using the fake to put the ball on the ground and easily drive past the defender for a layup.
The players are playing more to draw fouls than to actually score sometimes, which is why you get more fouls. Clearly the refs are also inconsistent, but imo it stems from an overall mentality of the players that's different than 5 or 10 or 20 years ago.
It' definately makes the finals hard to watch when you have 3 of the biggest floppers in the game, pierce fisher and gasol, and the refs with a quick trigger.
Basketball is better, physical play or not, when there is continuity and not foul stoppages every single possession. NBA needs to relax it's foul rules, so there are more no-calls.

I wish these clowns would actually watch games from their golden era and realize how common 70+ FTA games were, how so many flagrants were "soft" in the 90s due to the bad boys era, and realize how many touch fouls were called amongst other things. And can someone PLEASE dig up footage of all the uncalled handchecking that went on last night (and goes on all the time in the playoffs?). The most physical era in the NBA was actually the 70s. And rules eliminated REAL, physical handchecking in '79:
1978-79
Clarification added to prohibit hand-checking through “rigid enforcement” of rule allowing a defensive player to retain contact with his opponent so long as he does not impede his opponent’s progress.
In the 80s, I've seen handchecking get called all the time. Commentators pointing out on replays how the guy was not allowed to handcheck etc. SI published an entire feature article in the 80s because NBA defense was perceived as a JOKE. Poor help defense, no zone, less and less physicality, and so on. That's how everybody thought of it at the time. Handchecking was still allowed in the backcourt however to pressure the ball handler, but they eliminated that altogether in '94.
The same BS complaints people have now, people had back then. I saw old timers from the 70s on half time segments making fun of how you couldn't guard Jordan because of all the favorable rules for him (isolation, lack of physicality etc). I'll gladly upload video of couple of them talking about this because I think I saved it somewhere. And the same "handchecking" complaints were going on in '93, in fact here's an NY Times article:
Published: March 28, 1993
The increase of flagrant fouls and violence between players in today's National Basketball Association is a direct result of the elimination of the defensive hand check from games. Physical contact has always been a part of modern professional basketball. But when the N.B.A. abolished a defensive player's ability to use the hand check as a way of slowing down the offensive player he was guarding, players began finding new ways to keep their opponents from going to the hoop. As a result, the hip check has replaced the hand check, as frustrated players try to limit their opponents' scoring chances.
It is time for the N.B.A. to reinstate the use of the hand-check.
Celtics committed some really stupid fouls last night. Most of the bad calls came from non-shooting ones (but put teams in bonus early), which is what was really annoying. Fouls that had no impact on the play were being called by that douche known as Joey Crawford. I doubt anyone thinks the officiating was one sided (Celtics shot more FTs and were the more physical team), just the frequency of bad, unnecessary calls was terrible. If anything, it's the refs trying to control the series because they know there is some bad blood between the teams and don't want things to get carried away as the series progresses. But back to the point of "eras". This dude claims to be watching NBA for 20 years and THIS is the game to make him quit of all the ones? The officiating was poor, but I've seen hundreds of games from the 90s, 80s and the 00s worse, big playoff games like this one too.

On a side note, for those who live or have been to Chicago here, ever been to Hot Doug's? It's a small hot dog place, line is always huge during lunch hours but for 3-4 bucks you get a very good size hot dog, chili fries, and a fountain drink. I miss that, wish I still lived at Chi-Town.
Granted, it is nice to live near L.A now and have full access to In-N-Out =]

Some of Ray Allen's foul calls were questionable, but the Celtics just got owned.
Also, in general, comparing the total # of fouls called between 2 teams isn't a good indicator for which team was more favored by the refs...

Yea, the thing is those hot dogs you could sell for 10 bucks on some side street anywhere outside Chicago and claim it's a "fancy certain best in town" and people would pay that easily. But only there it goes for like 2-3 bucks.

I did, he had some fair points to be honest. He's definitely not the first one to complain about the fouls, but of course as others have stated no reason to make a long rant on some forum stating some obscure decision like you will stop watching NBA over one game.

We'll just ignore the population of the world (less than 7,000,000,000).
For there to be billions of NBA fans you'd need at least one in 7 in the world to be a fan. About a third of the world doesn't have electricity much less nbatv..
But the OP does illustrate a point. The ratings are fairly good this year but they do poorly when only true fans would watch. David Stern is a business man though.. true fans will probably watch anyway, why not promote to the casual fans.

End rant, it's late and I'm going to bed.
why are you here a year later crybaby *******:confusedshrug:

I wish these clowns would actually watch games from their golden era and realize how common 70+ FTA games were, how so many flagrants were "soft" in the 90s due to the bad boys era, and realize how many touch fouls were called amongst other things. And can someone PLEASE dig up footage of all the uncalled handchecking that went on last night (and goes on all the time in the playoffs?). The most physical era in the NBA was actually the 70s. And rules eliminated REAL, physical handchecking in '79:

The same people calling for hard fouls and what not complained when Lamar Odom bumped Dirk, and shit themselves when Bynum tried to kill Barea.

Here is actually a quote from a Wilt fan from the 90s.
Jordan has also received the benefit of rules changes that have been implemented to help offensive players, such as well-defined rules concerning zones, rules against hand checking, and flagrant fouls.
Jordan has benefited from the joke that has become NBA officiating, in which superstars receive preferential treatment, and Jordan has probably received more than any player in history. The steps and the fouls he gets away with are ridiculous!
You can go back and read any archives or usenet groups from back in the day and people are bitching about the same stuff back in the 90s that they complain about today.
When asked about Michael Jordan, Wilt said Jordan was a "period player" and went on to say that Jordan's drives and dunks would have had him thrown to the floor back in the 60s via players like Jim Loscutoff. Jordan's game is suited for today, where such hotdogging is allowed. Wilt pointed out that his offensive game depended on fade-aways, finger rolls, and hooks more than anything and that Jordan probably dunked the ball 3 or 4 times more in his career than Wilt did.
Wilt went on to say that Jordan is not the type of player that dominate
a game defensively, such as Bill Russell and himself could. He went on to
do say (after the interviewer asked him about Scottie Pippen) that
Pippen was a better defensive player than Jordan.
When asked who the greatest player ever was, Wilt said that "greatest"
is a subjective term, but he said that no player ever did the things
that he did on a court. He said that in this sense, he would take Oscar
Robertson 2nd to himself. No player influenced the rule book as much as Wilt. He was so dominant that they had to make up rules to try and contain him. No player has ever led the league in rebounding and assists (let alone
the former and fg% and points). He said that he believes that not only
was Oscar better than jordon, but also Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, and
Walt Frazier.
The farter we get away from Jordan's retirement and away from the media hype, the more fairly we see the shortcomings of Jordan. Wilt pointed out how he was far more athletic than Jordan, and cited a 52" verticle leap (I believe Simon had asked
about this before, and I told him it was from his days a
Globetrotter)...yes, Children, Wilt was a 7'0" high jumper in college
who won the Big 8 in the high jump his junior year. He pointed out how
he was the fastest man in the NBA (yes children, Wilt also ran track),
and how he was much stronger than Jordan. However, he pointed
out, people don't want to acknowledge his speed or agility, but only the
strength, because agility and athleticism aren't traits associated with
"Goliath."
Wilt pointed out that he could shoot outside shots (very true, I have
video footage of this -- and Red Holzman also said the same...see
http://members.tripod.com/~airjudden/wilt/) and could bring the ball up
court (I have video footage of him leading fast breaks in college), but
in the pros that wasn't his job. He was smart enough to give the ball
to Guy Rodgers, who was an EXCEPTIONAL ball handler. Players back then
weren't into showcasing their individual talents because they had a
better sense of team play and how to function as a team.
