View Full Version : Official Music Recommendation Thread

Jailblazers7

I am constantly looking for new music in basically every genre and I know many people are the same. This is a thread where people can ask for new music in certain areas or just share new music/old music that people should know about. If anything it is just a thread I can constantly bump for more musically educated posters to recommend me music.

Currently, I am looking for some new funk type of music to listen to. Anyone have suggestions?

Yes I most definitely do. I respect your opinion on music and would appreciate any reccomendations you can give me.

For those entering this thread-

I appreciate basically any type of music. Do not hold back anything you might think I may be interested in. I am willing to give anything an honest chance.

As for electronic, I've been rocking Four Tet's 'There Is Love In You', here's one of the tracks, my favorite Angel Echoes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tpe4id7cLnU).

Another group I love is Simian Mobile Disco, I believe their newest release is still Temporary Pleasure from 2009. Here's a great track: Cruel Intentions (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OrdtJbozr8)

Hahaha.

You are in for a treat, then. They are 'funk' personified... Way ahead of their time. They never got the acclaim that they rightly deserve.

First of all, I'll tell you that you should download the album 'Fashion Nugget' immediately. It is an absolute classic.

Here are some tracks off of 'Fashion Nugget' to give you a taste. I'll start you off with their more accessible, popular stuff.

Frank Sinatra (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZZlQAOLXjA&feature=PlayList&p=0AF12AB7A76F94D3&playnext_from=PL&index=0&playnext=1)

It's Coming Down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdaFv_jMZLY)

New stuff or old stuff?

If you like Mingus, check out Milt Hinton. (If you don't know Mingus, definitely check out Mingus).

For newer stuff, I like Ingrid Jensen. And Jon Fumasoli.

And you may already know him, but I've been on hooked on some Arturo Sandoval recordings that I've had forever and just dumped into my itunes. Latin rhythms, but he played a lot with Dizzy Gillespie, so if you like Dizzy's stuff, you'll notice some similarities.

I think one of my favorite feelings is discovering new music. Just that satisfaction of never hearing something before and it being completely new to you, no matter how old or new the song may be. Maybe just that one song, or the whole album. If you're lucky, you love everything that artist or group has ever released. It's like hearing Led Zeppelin for the first time ever all over again.

Two examples have happened in the last hour for me:

Watching the latest episode of Deadliest Catch, I heard this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_r1sBR5us4&playnext_from=TL&videos=OH6rssu4Wrg) song during the credits.

And watching Twilight: New Moon [shut the f*ck up], I heard this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXp4gB-bgjs&playnext_from=TL&videos=1RJlNTQa1Kg) song about 20 minutes in.

Since you found that song watching New Moon (I wont flame you because I watch embarassing movies too), I don't think anything beats when the music matches the moment in a movie perfectly.

No I didn't. I never found that thread again. I specifically remember the kid posting a picture, then writing that this is the closest anyone his age will ever get to seeing the Hendrix Experience. And I remember they were three young, latino guys. A buddy I know suggested they may be someone called Rome, but I never looked them up.

An older one, but for anyone into The Allman Bros., check out Gov't Mule. They're a side project of modern Allman Bros. member Warren Haynes. A great southern rock sound. Another group I just re-discovered while loading up my Itunes. Not all that unknow. Soulshine is a really well known tune. But they are just under the radar of most people.

And anyone getting SRV comps is on my radar too. So I'll llook up Rory too.

It was weird loading up my itunes. I had no idea how much I had of certain stuff. I had like 26 Pearl Jam albums. 22 Hendrix albums. And 18 SRV albums. I forgot those obsessed stages I went through with these various groups. Chili Peppers too I had a ton of. And I seem to have a disproportionate amount of live stuff.

Thanks I appreciate it. I could use some good blues music right now.

I've never heard him, and I have no speakers at work. Is he Blues/Rock?

It was like 8 years ago I went to see Skynard at Giants stadium. Everyone was tailgating in the parking lot. The opener comes on, and no one had ever heard of him, so no one moved. But he starts playing, and you could feel the parking lot get quiet, and everyone sort of buzzing "who the hell is this guy". Then slowly everyone starts pressing in the gates because he sounded that good from outside. It was Kenny Wayne Shephard. I've got a handfull of his albums. He's sort of a SRV desciple. He's got a bit more of an edge than Johnny Lang, who I also like, but not as much.

Wow. That song was incredible, RBA. Almost perfect for the type of song I'm in the mood for.

And Shannon that song you posted really hit an emotional cord with me right now. I loved it, great stuff. Stuff heavily influenced with piano really gets to me because that instrument holds a sentimental place in my heart.

I have pretty eclectic tastes, though. People often don't like my suggestions, not because the music is bad, but because it's often so far removed from what people consider to be "normal."

Currently, I am looking for some new funk type of music to listen to. Anyone have suggestions?

if you havent listened to any george duke, try these classics:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXhnQY5Kva0&feature=related

i think his fusion of jazz and funk is extremely underrated if it is on the radar at all... his lastest album from 2008 dukey treats revived the classic 70s funk feel

his collaborations with stanley clarke (and herbie hancock) are just plain fun!

Been listening to a lot of Rodrigo y Gabriela recently. Tremendous stuff. I saw them at Bonnaroo in '07 and they were fantastic live. I then sort of forgot about them, but a friend reintroduced me to them recently and I can't get enough.

For those that have never heard them, it is acoustic instrumental jamming. As their name would indicate, there is a real Hispanic, flamenco flavor to it, but it isn't limited to that. They just pretty much kick arse and take names... Acoustic style.

Here is a little taste:

RBA have i alread recommended the dirty three to you? i seem to remember you being into a lot of post rock and maybe nick cave (i recall marlo was into him), but these guys are next level... while a lot of post rock is noodley sorta stuff, these guys hit the emotional core more than anyone. if you ever get a chance to see their live show, jump to it. simply a transcendant experience.

for all those reading, i'd describe their music as an evocative gypsy post rock, drenched in pathos and regret. warren ellis' violin paints delicate melodies whilst mick turner provides the wide brushstrokes and jim white the rhythmic backbone. amazing music.

Listened to the first three tracks thus far and I'm impressed. Some post-rock tends to drift off a little too far from the initial melody and it become a post-rock/jamband blend.

These guys seem to have a direction in their playing which is consistent and succinct. The violin being the driving force also adds a unique flavor.

I dig it. Have to download some stuff. Nice lookout.

Staralfur is f#cking incredible. One of my favorites, as well. It has a great minimalistic sound, even though it incorporates an entire string orchestra... That little repeating triad pattern on the piano with those persistent strings keeping it moving... Simply beautiful.

And, yeah... Untitled 1 off of ( ) is also a classic.

I really enjoy Takk, though... I love all of their albums, but I think it has the best 'flow' from one epic track into the next. Then again, choosing your favorite Sigur Ros tracks/albums is a difficult venture.

Discovering new and amazing music like this just astounds me how so many people go through life just listening to the same two genres, and whatever's on the radio.

i love the fact that he uses crazy old floppy discs with minimal sample time. this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXOGcpcsQJ8) video is worth watching for many reasons (one of which being the opening beat, which is one of the most beautiful pieces of music i've heard in a couple of years), but also because it shows how crafty he has to be when using such rudimentary equipment (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXOGcpcsQJ8#t=5m20s).

Good call on Panacea. I loved 'Ink Is My Drink' but hadn't got round to listening to 'The Scenic Route' yet. Cheers for the reminder. :D

Oh, and here's a song I'm loving recently: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRyYchlEfoU

Aloe Blacc is insanely talented.

I've been listening to a lot of Emanon recently also. Aloe Blacc is a nice artist. Good rapper and singer. I bet him and Mos Def would be a great collabo. Anyway, two of my favorites are Waiting Room (http://www.youtube.com/watch#!v=_sy7WeJVPA4&feature=related) & Politician (http://www.youtube.com/watch#!v=Kb9mAbLEnds&feature=related).

Here is Aloe's tribute to Sam Cooke by singing A Change Is Gonna Come (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQx728q1Sbo) (the description under the video made me respect him even more). He's no Sam but the dude can definitely sing. I remember him singing a version of Billie Jean that tetris posted that was great too.

edit -- here's that Billie Jean (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DptqlP9PYXc) video.

K-Os is a very underrated musical artist. Mixing hip-hop, rap, alternative and some jazz together. And him being underrated is probably the main reason I like him.

I'm not. Some people are just too "manly" to even entertain listening to certain kinds of music. Or they just immediately dismiss anything outside of their comfort zone, which I think is a bit sad.
Yeah, but the point is, why do you care?

ever check out Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds jail? i've had him in constant rotation for the past few months and now i'm starting to delve into more of his catalogue. but this album was one of my favourites, it's all over the place musically but every song is just as ear catching as the next, and his lyrics deliver as much as they have to, though they could stand to be a little more rhythmic

http://www.pit5.com/pics/music/Nick_Cave_Al_Abattoir_Blues___Lyre_of_Orpheus.jpg

anyway, check it out. favourite songs if you wanna check em out first; My Beautiful World, Messiah Ward, Nature Boy on the first album, Supernaturally, Carry Me on the second

The lead singer has that soft understated sound sometimes that Buckley had. Songs like Kettering, Shiva, Epilogue, and Atrophy really remind me of him.

And no, I've never listened to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds before. I'll definitely look into that album.

i know right? i've tried a few other albums from him and haven't found a similar sound to that double lp... still good stuff but it doesn't compare to the melodies and tempos of that one. Murder Ballads was the last one i heard, the title of the album is meant to be taken literally, underwrites the whole concept. some pretty funny lines, there's a song that opens with...

"they found mary bellows cuffed to the bed,
with a rag in her mouth, and a bullet in her head"

i was on the train when i heard that and let loose quite the chortle
