I remember it was the shit when I was growing up. It was supposed to revolutionize the game of basketball, but I always dispised it. All those so called ballers would do tricks and throw the ball at the defenders forehead, and then the crowd would go apeshit over it. Many of my friends joined the fad, but I was the only one who actually cared about how real basketball was supposed to be played.

So what the hell ever happened to that so called league of theirs? Are they still touring the country? My friend bought a pair of AND 1 shoes one day, and the soles came off the very same say. LOL

It was lame and slowly died like it should have.

From what I remember most of the main guys broke off and started their own streetball tour under a different name. Not sure how that's going, but the hype has certainly died down.

those first four mixtapes are really great IMO. I have the VHS tapes in a box somewhere. the novelty of it wore off a little bit, partially because so much of the stuff "you'd never seen before" became par for the course and there wasn't much creative expansion. Certainly didn't help that their most popular star, Hot Sauce, took off to do his own thing. Someone clearly misunderstood supply and demand- there just isn't a big enough street ball market for these guys to all franchise themselves. As far as I know they still do the summer tour and put out mixtapes, I just think it's not as popular as it was when it was fresh.

As far as the company (http://and1.com/) itself, they're still out there. The days of being the cool underground shoe company being repped by young KG are long gone. They signed Monte Ellis to be their "star" and he got hurt. They haven't put out a cool shoe in a few years either, they always had some hideous kicks but now it's pretty much 100% ugly. I want to like them as a company but they've lost my business lately.

Thanks for the great info sir. I agree that the first couple of mixtapes were pretty good because it was all new stuff. However, the rest were just repeat moves as expected because it's hard to come up with original material all the time. I remember that epsn2 used to show their games of all the time, but it hasn't been on in a couple of years. The products, especially the shoes were terrible imo. They quality of the material was as bad as a basketball shoe can be made from. One would think that a streetball shoe would last longer than a day of wear and tear outdoors, but it falls apart in 2 damn hours!!!

I actually never had any problem with product quality. One of my favorite pairs of basketball shoes I've ever had/worn was the Open Run

http://www.solentsuns.co.uk/cPanel/uploaded/boot3.jpg

I wish I'd bought several pairs when they were out, they were super comfortable and I like the way they look. They're pretty worn out now but I got appropriate mileage on them.

I always really liked the and1 KG shoe too

http://krossovki.net/images/stories/stars/nowadays/kg/big/And_1_KG_II.jpg

They over do it too much now, the sleek simplicity of their older stuff isn't there for me any more or I'd happily buy another pair of their shoes.

They should make it a reality show. We see these reality shows like Hells Kitchen, American Idol and Survivor basically showing the same thing every year but with different people.

that's basically what the show on ESPN was, they had their stable of contract and1 guys and they would travel the country playing stars of different cities who, if they impressed, would be taken along for parts of the tour. There was some voteoff or other reality-show way of eliminating them as they went along and the last guy standing got an and1 contract. not the most compelling tv unfortunately.

The professor is from Salem, Oregon, which is pretty close to where I live. He actually played in my local gym, and I wish that I could play that midget!!! I don't think that he is all that good other than his fancy moves.

There were various other streetball shows on EPSN 2 other than AND 1. I remember there was this one where they put the best 1 on 1 streetball players together in a tournament style playoff. They were actually pretty entertaining.

the and1 sprees and quests weren't bad.

i had a pair of tai chi's, and besides being the shoe carter wore to win the dunk contest, were all looks, because they were so-so as a basketball shoe.

i remember buying a pair of t-mac 2's and noticing the difference.

I know the professor and another And 1 guy still play basketball at the LA fitness in Northridge some times, they don't really try hard or do any cool moves because the level of competition is way below them. Bryon Russell plays ball at that same gym, he never tries either, but the one time I saw they and 1 guys and russell were there at the same time and they guarded eachother and stepped up their game abit-it was so enlightening being on the court at the same time as these guys- very humbling to learn that some washed up novelty basketball players and 40+ old man Bryon Russell were so high above me and everyone else in our primes lol.

If you want to meet the Professor, go to the LA Fitness this summer he's there alot these days.

I saw them a couple of years ago in Sofia. They still got game( of course our team was weak as hell). But it looked like they are getting old now. Hot sauce and the professor was on the bench for very long time.

Oh man, that's all they used to be. And1 was a t-shirt company at the start and I was all over that via Eastbay in my middle school years. I had various tees with sayings ranging from, "I'm sorry, I thought you could play" (of which at one point in 6th grade I pointed to after beating a classmate in basketball and said 'Read the shirt, pal') to "Respect the game, leave the court". Cringe worthy.

you'd hate me then i try to get that in at least 2 times a game.

the whole fad died out over time but every now and again someone will talk enough shit out on the courts for me to try some of my old and1 moves, it normaly results in either a tottaly awesome i can't believe he just broke him down like that lay up or i throw the ball off my foot:lol

still entertaining to keep your handles up

AO got a 10 day contract for the supersonics i believe back in 01 or 02.

However the most talented And1 player wasn't Skip. It was Alimoe by far. 6'8 with sick handles, ups. He dominated the Rucker Park league with Skip in the late 90's. Easily more talented than Skip, he just didn't work hard enough to make it to the league. A Shame. He was the bigger, taller, better version of Lance Stephenson.

I used to go to and1 tour all the time when they came to raleigh, it was really fun... especially the part before where the locals tried out for the game. OP,just because you enjoy watching no defense basketball, crazy tricks and basically a show doesnt mean you cant like real basketball as well.

Was it really no defense though? Maybe no help defense. I remember they did 1 vs 1 a lot during games and they were guarded pretty tightly while using their moves to get past the defender.

I hear you on that...I actually enjoyed the fast break dunks that those guys showcased on the mixtapes. The thing that really pissed me off was when most of my friends were so caught up in it for a couple of years that playing basketball with them was not fun anymore. All they did was try to break my ankles and throw the damn ball at my face, which is the most annoying thing that I can think of happening on the court. I tried to play it off but it was so prominent around school and the parks, so I decided to start playing at the local fitness club with grown men. To each his own I guess, but it got way out of hand for me to deal with except to bail.

And 1 was cool from about 99 to 2003-2004ish. We'd watch before we hoop, than go outside and try some moves by Shane the dribbling machine or whoever.

Once Professor and Spyda joined, it got week. Does it still come on ESPN?

No, I don't talk to people like that in real life. I sometimes lash out on idiots on Internet forums just to release some steam. Actually...not gonna lie. I do have a mean temper on the court, no matter the competition. I get way too technical sometimes and forget about the fun part of the game. I was taught to play fundamentally, so seeing streetball moves tried on me really irritates me. I loving playing at various parks in my area in the summer, so I have no problem with playing the traditional form of streetball.

Great analogy.
People just got to take it for what it is, another genre of basketball. In a small way the NBA should be a little thankful because it brought the game of basketball to a larger market and expanded the scouting potential. I'm sure those And1 guys know what fundemental basketball is, they're just paid to do tricks in front of an audience.
