I happen to work at a beer distributor on the weekends as my job 2. We carry a lot of brands and microbrews and one in particular called Saranac. It's brewed in the Ithaca, New York area in the midst of the Adirondack Mountains I believe, and I've tried a few of their actual beer beers and I've been always satisfied(Imperial Stout, Amber Wheat to be specific)
However, recently working and we got some samples of the Root Beer they brew and holy ape tits it is PHENOMENAL. If you live on the east coast, preferably central/northern and you come across this on a restaurant menu, I urge you to try it. It honestly is better than IBC and Barq's by a long shot to me.

My daughter is a root beer connoisseur. I'll see if I can get some for her to try.

also, it is probably better because those brands use HFCS and the microbrew probably uses real cane sugar (or at least real sugar).

Better than Barq's and A&W? Now that is high praise. I'll have to see if I can get some of that here.

One of the best rootbeers I've bought at a store is Sprecher. $2.99 for 4 bottles.

Not sure where they sale it in the country, but it's made in Wisconsin and sold at Menards in Wisconsin as well.

Don't make me drive up there and drink your rootbeer.
On a side note: I love red cream soda.

Actually good brewed root beer is in a completely different league than A&W brewed or Barqs. That info I posted was the best root beer I've tasted bought at a regular store. I was amazed. They fire brew their root beer in wood kettles I think or something. Whatever they do it's freakin' good. Their other sodas are awesome as well.

I'd like to give a shout out to THE BEST soda I've ever had. It's Vernor's Ginger Ale. Created in 1866, it's very sweet, highly carbonated, has a bite, aged in oak for 3 years, and has a touch of vanilla... Apparently the formula has changed a bit in the last few years, but I haven't had any since like 2009.
It's tough to find. Michigan, Arizona, Ohio, and upstate New York are practically the only places you can get it in stores.

The number one mistake with this is it's in a can. Plastic bottles and cans suck. They need to do it glass and old school for the best taste.

Root beer is some disgustingly filthy dirt. I'm not amazed it's popular in the States as they are the den to some scum of the earth fat cows

I don't touch sugar any more, but this stuff fantastic.
Not only is it a microbrewed root beer, you can buy a 5 liter keg of it.

I just bought 12 cans of Zesto Root Beer. I only drank 1 canned of root beer. The rest are just decorations on my kitchen.

Well yeah, Barq's is one of the worst name brand root beers. A&W is the best of the huge huge companies. Henry Weinhardt's is my personal favorite though of the pretty big companies.

last week at the grocery store i spotted this crazy-looking thing in the tea aisle:
pappy o'daniel's concentrated sassafras tea.
http://www.barryfarm.com/images/product/tea/sassafrastea.JPG
i figured i'd give it a shot since i haven't used up all of my nine lives yet.
.
.
.
so i mixed it with chilled water and a little xylitol (an excellent artificial sweetener) and took a sip... fully expecting to do an instant spit-take.
http://www.thedailycrate.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/daily-show-spit-take.gif
(GIF courtesy, nobody on ISH knowing what a spit-take is without video)
.
.
.
instead, within half an hour i had finished the bottle (which made about half a gallon of tea), and had to talk myself out of going back to the store and buying all the rest of the stock.
sweet mother of meerkats, batfang.
CLIFFS this stuff has that traditional, magical root beer taste that you might only sample at a county fair or a dilapidated store in hicksville run by a 90-yr couple and their 70-yr old kids.
it seems that nowadays, most makers use ARTIFICIAL sassafras to produce root beer. why the hell is that...??
in any case, this stuff surely is the explosive device. next time i'm going to try mixing it with some sparkling water and see how close it comes to old-timey root beer.
i think today's brewers are really missing the boat on this tasty motherf-cker.

IBC and Barq's are a long shot from being top quality root beers anyway.

I think it's good. They also make a nice sarsaparilla.
Pumpkin? Ah, no.

It's literally the exact same as mouthwash.

I'm not into this root beer scene at all, but i tried not your fathers beer or whatever and it was way too sweet. First few sips were nice though, i enjoyed the vanilla as it was a surprise. But then i noticed the sweetness dominating the palate and it completely ruined it for me. Not enough complexity IMO... Now i know this is going against what i just said, but maybe a less sugary but more malty/bodied root beer?
