It's to tag something automatically. So if you want to mention the world cup you can say #worldcup and twitter or whatever will automatically tag it as a world cup related post. Then when other people look for world cup related topics, your post will come up.

hashtag used on Twitter.

Although, even if you don't use one, keywords in your tweet will still show up on a search of those words.

it goes into a thread for that topic. So if you are on twitter and you see something with a hashtag, you can just click on it and you'll see "tweets" from others on that subject.

The reason you see them on facebook is that those people have their twitter linked to FB. So whenever they update their twitter it updates their FB status simultaneously.

the @ is used on twitter when replying to someones post.

The @ symbol in front of that person's name will notify them that they specifically were mentioned somewhere on facebook.

Or if ye want to go old school here, then if you have subtitles on your TV or are watching a subtitled film, then a # infront of a sentence means they are singing lyrics of a song.

Just entered this question randomly into Google and my favorite basketball site came up as the first result. It was a special moment.
