Update: The trade is official - http://www.insidehoops.com/blog/?p=6105

The Nets are close to moving Yi Jianlian.

They are working on a deal with the Wizards that would send Yi and cash to Washington for a player who makes “significantly less” than what the Nets’ power forward earns. Three sources confirmed this could happen.

The player could be Quinton Ross ($1.14 million) or one of their draft picks. Yi makes $4.05 million this season. Either way, the Nets are close to getting Yi’s salary off their books.

The Nets would do this to get as far under the cap as possible so they potentially could sign two max players. Yi for Ross would save the Nets close to $3 million and put them around $30 million. from: http://blogs.northjersey.com/blogs/inthezzone

personally if this goes down, I think New York and Miami hunt down Washington's GM for giving Chicaago and NEw Jersey more cap space... considering NY gave up most of its assets (a couple of firsts and Jordan Hill) just to dump Jefferies... I get the feeling if NY waited they could've dumped Jefferies to Sac or Washington about now for only Chandler or Hill or a pick

Yi's got talent and he's only 23. Playing with John Wall could really help his game.

Besides the cap space, it might have to do with Favors.

Yi bitched a lot when he was drafted by Milwaukee. Wouldn't surprise me if he starts demanding to start / significant pt.

I dont like their latest moves. I think they are shooting themselves in the foot.

I like CDR, but he was having attitude issues and was disapproving of our new coach so he was pushing himself out the door anyway.

This Yi move is purely for cap and they're just trying to cut fat on the team I guess. I liked the way Yi was progressing, but oh well. We'll live.

Everyone desparately wants cap space. Washington is helping people get cap space, but not charging them any premium even though teams are desparate to get cap space.

lots of non-cap FAs to bolster your roster with as well. Why not try and add a Scola or Miller (either). Moving Yi means an extra guy like matt barnes could be signed.

Apparently the number to get 2 maximum free agents is 33.2 million, somthing in that neighborhood, so unless the Wizards want to take Kris Humphries too, the Nets aren't going to be able to sign 2 maximum free agents.

I think 2 maxes is dumb for them. I would rather they got one solid max and then address the roster needs with some MLE or just above type FA players. Say they get Amare, then maybe go for mike miller and another wing. Say they get lebron, then go and get scola as your backup 4/5 and some combo guard. Makes more sense to me

Forget 2 or not 2 maxes. If Yi is not part of their plan, getting rid of him gives them more money to get someone who is, which is smart.

Considering how much the Wizards are paying Yi this season, they really hit this one out of the park. I mean you gain a guy who is going to sell a million of your jerseys in a week, and your TV ratings will improve greatly as well. Yes Yi isn't all that great, but he's still 7 feet tall, and has the ability to average a double double. For a short term solution I think this was a great pickup for the Wiz.

He's helping his own team- that is a great deal for the wizards- nobody is thinking about the knicks when building their own teams- maybe they think about the lakers or another good team but nobody should be worried about the knicks or nets capspace, right now that's nothing. Teams still have to build for themselves

Yeah. Brook Lopez would be the best big man LeBron has ever played with if that happened.

I was kind of surprised by this. I figured with the Nets global marketing scheme, they'd keep Yi and try and work him in to the system. I guess not. He doesn't really fit with Avery Johnson. The Nets are already going to have a logjam at the PF spot if they sign a big FA acquisition. Getting rid of Yi helps that.

Im not really a fan of all the moves that the WIZ having been making either to tell you the truth. The only good move in the past year has been drafting John Wall. To me when a team is looking to destroy and rebuild they should have at least put themselves in a position to be a major player in this free agency market. It seems as if they've just been racking up on players that teams have been trying to get rid of, but not players that would have significant impact on their future. IMO it's been a waste

T Will = Poor Man's Lebron

Though it is not inconceivable to think if Lebron comes, TWill will either be traded or play a Tony Allen role (which would further reduce his talents)

First they cleared cap in order to get LeBron, Wade, Bosh, etc.
Then they got 1st pick, and suddenly they wanted to develop their own superstar and therefore they just took what they could get for free, Hinrich will be a good 'mentor' and hopefully Yi can come to use.
Wizards didn't really suppose they would get pick 1, so they had to change their plan.

Ok so right now the Wizards have (excluding J-Ho and Foye whom I think won't be there long enough):

PG - Wall / Gilbert?
SG - Kirk / Young
SF - Thornton
PF - Blatche / Yi
C - McGee

What an awful team. Does anybody know what they intend to do with GIlbert? Obviously he's still the better player but I think the fans and the franchise is sick with him and would be better off growing with Wall.

Or play Blatche as a C and Yi as the PF. Then again Blatche will probably screw it up and get arrested again.
