View Full Version : Mike Miller Joining Heat
Lamar Doom

Former Washington Wizards swingman Mike Miller is jumping on the bus with LeBron James and company and signing a deal with the Miami Heat, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
The paper claims that the deal will be worth $30 million over five years.
For the dismal Wizards, the 6-8, nine-year veteran averaged 10.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game.
According to the Sun-Sentinel, Miller could have also joined the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers, with the latter offering a boatload more than the Heat in cash but not in talented players.
Meanwhile, the paper reports that all the new additions may leave free agent Udonis Haslem, a longtime Dwyane Wade pal, unable to re-sign with the Heat. Two other teams that want him, the Sun-Sentinel reports, are the New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks

5 year, 30 Mil.
I'm jealous, I was hoping Mike would join us in LA. I was also hoping he'd be the starting 2 for the bulls next year. Oh well. Not a bad place for Mike to go, he gets to be the "veteran" leader :)

sounds like Joel Anthony might be back as well...
We heard Lebron mention it and then there was the following quote in this article (http://www.sbnation.com/2010/7/9/1560661/miami-starts-filling-holes-around-lebron-james-mike-miller)
Miami also made a qualifying offer of $1 million to center Joel Anthony

6 mil a season is afir money for him.
At that price though the Heat will have some serious numbers crunching to fill out the roster.

Shooting 48% from 3 last year is what made Miami go after a SG/SF rather than a PG or C.
I don't know how I feel about this. Obviously I'd prefer Miller to start. Wade has openly stated several times he doesn't like playing PG. Does this mean LeBron is going to be starting at the PG spot? Maybe have Wade guard PGs, Miller SGs?

How exactly can they afford to pay him that ? I thought they shipped out Beasley because they needed to clear up space for a 3rd max contract ?

yeah I would really like someone who understands the numbers to break it down for me... the new big 3 are going to take 15 or 16 mil a year? the cap is just shy of 60? so if mike is 6 mil, chalmers is just shy of 1 mil, the big 3 are a combined 45... they have to fit the rest of their roster in at the remainder?

The salary cap being higher than expected cleared out enough room for three max contracts. Trading away Beasley made it so they could sign Miller and, maybe, another player depending on what kind of pay cuts the big three took.

seems like they'd have to take less than 16 mil if they want another Miller-type player. Otherwise it's literally going to be league minimum for everyone else.

Now this I'm pissed about...
He would have been perfect for us. Damnit. We're in a kinda bad place cos our main assets Chandler and Gallinari both play the same position and earn so little it's hard to trade them for a equal value, ie decent SG, i really wanted Miller through free agency.

The three have to take about a 1.5 million dollar haircuts for this signing to happen.
I'm no expert on the cap but the only way I believe they are able to make major moves and still sign the big three to 3 max contracts is if wade does not sign his until they are finished filling in the roster. A player's team always has the ability to resign their own player no matter what, so is it possible that the heat can sign everyone they need to sign until they get right under the cap and then sign wade to his max????
I'm not absolutely positive on this that's why I'm asking.

Not true.
There is something called a 'caphold' in place for Wade's free agent rights.

Miami is far enough under the cap to sign all three of them to max contracts, because the only player they have under contract is Mario Chalmers I believe. But if they sign Mike Miller all three of them will need to take a slight paycut to stay under the cap.
This was lock once Lebron committed to the Heat. Great signing.

LBJ would play the PG. I really wanted Miller for the Knicks. Miller is one of the best glue players around. He plays good defense, rebounds, shoots, passes.... Only problem are the injury concerns.

Wouldn't it be funny if Miller had his worst shooting season. hahaa.
But can't teams go over the cap but sign anyone they like. I think if they go over the luxury tax then they pay $1 for every dollar they spend? Could someone confirm this. Thanks

meh, they probably wont let him give it up. Last year stuckey tried to give up his 3 twice, including during the offseason. league wouldnt let him. you have to apply way in advance. ONly way lebron gets 6 is if they trade chalmers or the league is incredibly superstar biased. oh wait.

no, you are completely wrong. you can only sign up to the cap. Its through raises, re-signing your own FAs, and adding MLE players that you get to the luxury tax area.
If the contracts are for 15 each (I havent seen a real figure yet, but this is more than 2 mil less than the max with the 58 mil cap), they have about 12 left to spend. 6-7 after this one

True.
But correct me if I'm wrong. Right now the Lakers only have 7 guys on salary and they are over the cap. So after spending the MLE to pursue a role player type guy, aren't they going to have to spend league minimum to fill out the rest of their roster?

They need size inside. They need the Shaqtus to stop Dwight Howard. :lol
That's nuts, they have a unbeatable team I don't understand why would they do something so unfair, scar their career names for championships they haven't earned? If this was so easy to do in the past then the players wouldn't be as good as they are now in earning their reputation, I hope they fail to Lakers.

well, blake wasnt the whole MLE IIRC. 4 mil per? so, they have at least 2 mil to spend on one player. plus (maybe) the BAE? plus bird rights of brown, farmar and fisher if they want. so, they could conceivably re-sign those 3, sign a guy with the leftover MLE and another with the BAE and not have any vet min contracts.

okay i am a fan of basketball and the NBA. I do not want to see a monopoly in the ****ign league. I want to see competition and allstars on all sorts of teams. This is jsut a disgrace to us fans where all these players who should be leading their own league are on one team. You can't have a prime bosh, wade and lebron on team and add miller to it too.
this is nonsense and i hope stern is upset about this. How can the bottom teams in the nba compete if sht like this is happening? People were upset about gasol going for free to LA...this is just 10x worse.

I think a Perfect Center for this Team would be a Tyson Chandler..A Guy who Can Body up the Howards and Bynums of the World and Grab Boards and Do the Dirty Work..People have mentioned Shaq but this Team is Built to Run and Run and Uptempo and Shaq would just slow them down and Clog Driving Lanes for Lebron and Wade.

I don't like this move for the heat. If I were building around their big three I would want to bring in role players who play tough defense and hustle, and maybe have a nasty streak. They don't really need scoring. They need to add toughness to win a lot of chips.
Although, Miller could end up being a bench player eventually, in which capacity he would fit well. Miller as a 6th man is championship material.

What they needed was a 3 point shooter for floor spacing and they got one. Lebron and Wade need some driving lanes and space to operate.

Yeah, I would rather have Barnes than Miller for that team. As good as their big three are, if they mess around and only add offensive minded role players they'll become PHX east. I can't see Riley ever letting such a thing happen, but signing Miller is a start in that direction.

The tax break on a 6 million dollar salary is about 200k... not nearly enough to make up for turning down 8-10 mil per year salary from another team.

so lebron and bosh makes 110mil 6years apiece, wade 107mil 6 years
