View Full Version : UFC 117 - August 7 (Silva vs. Sonnen)

So UFC 117 is in a couple of days, hopefully this doesnt turn into a dance of like most of AS fights, and hopefully Chael Sonnen, IRL troll can talk the talk, I personally find AS antics funny instead of the lack of action in GSP or Evans fights.
Fight card
* Middleweight Championship bout: Anderson Silva (c) vs. Chael Sonnen[1]
* Welterweight bout: States Jon Fitch vs. Thiago Alves
* Lightweight bout: Clay Guida vs. Rafael dos Anjos
* Welterweight bout: Matt Hughes vs. Ricardo Almeida
* Heavyweight bout: States Roy Nelson vs. Junior dos Santos
Preliminary card
* Light Heavyweight bout: Thiago Silva vs. States Tim Boetsch
* Welterweight bout: Dustin Hazelett vs. Rick Story
* Heavyweight bout: Stefan Struve vs. States Christian Morecraft
* Welterweight bout: Johny Hendricks vs. Charlie Brenneman
* Welterweight bout: Ben Saunders vs. Dennis Hallman
card looks pretty good plus the winner of mr. fatso vs JDS gets a shot at the winner of the Velasquez/ Lesnar match, I see JDS steamrolling fatso, but I think Roy Nelson has a shot especially if he smothers JDS on the ground. Also I think Thaigo Silva is to much for Tim Boetsch. Plus we see the return of Dennis " The Matt Hughes Hunter" Hallman.

Those 3 fights I'm looking forward too A LOT. Jon Jones is the next big thing in 205. Him and Shogun are pretty much the future of that division imo.
Nice to see Okami on main card again.
And I think Gomi is going to rejuvenate his career with a stunner against Griffin. Fireball kid for life.

I like Jon Jones but is that the best the UFC can give him ewww the Janitor.
btw that fight night is also the return of Big John to the Octagon.
*Update*
Thiago Silva is out of UFC117 due to a back injury :facepalm

What's wrong with the Janitor? He only has 2 losses in the last 8 years and one of those losses was to a HW.
I'm glad it's Thiago Silva and not Thiago Alves. I'm looking forward to that rematch.

just seems like a boring fighter almost all his wins are decision wins, he's only won against mediocre fighters and his losses came from legit comp, I would have rather seen Jon Jones against Thiago Silva or Forest.

I'll let you in on a secret, Thiago Silva is an overrated gatekeeper. The dude is never going to be a contender in the 205 division, he has overrated and sloppy striking and his takedowns aren't good enough for him to be a grappling based fighter. He does NOTHING great. He will never be top 5 in 205 ever.
T. Silva is the definition of a gatekeeper. I don't understand why people love him so much. Jon Jones would make a fool out of him.
At least The Janitor has something he's great at, wrestling, and should be able to challenge Jones with his takedowns.

he maybe overrated but he punches hard and to the casual fan looks like a contender and would prop Jon Jones up the ladder of potential prospects, instead you make him fight a boring wrestler, whose 39yrs old, also looks the part and doesnt do anything for Jon Jones career. I dont get why there taking it slow for Jon Jones

He has a number of decision wins because he's a wrestler. His fight with Lil Nog was boring in the first round, but it picked up in the 2nd. He's a good, but not great fighter. I think it would be a pretty good win for Bones if he can pull it off. I think Bones will get a top 10 guy next if he wins.

As much as I like watching a fat guy (albeit a highly, highly skilled one) whoop up on some cut up dudes there is no way Nelson beats JDS.
Skywalker if you recall, I told you prior to the airing of TUFF that not only would Kimbo lose to Roy Nelson but he'd win the show outright. Roy Nelson is legit but JDS is a nightmare match up for him. Not since prime Cro Cop (in the heavyweight division) have I seen a fighter with as crisp striking that is able to allude his opposition.
Fitch and Alves should be awesome. A rematch and both guys have improved leaps in bounds since they last squared off. I'm worried that GSP drained Alves of his confidence and he'll be gunshy. He strikes me as a guy that is weak meantally in the sense that if you put pressure on him he'll fold. Fitch has heart for miles and should be able to grind out a decision. 12-1 in the the UFC in one of the most competitive divisons is nothign to scoff at.
Matt Hughes will lose to Almeida. There is a reason he is a favorite going into the fight (Ricardo). It should be a competitive fight but Almeida is in his physical prime and is a very smart fighter while Hughes has been in a lot of wars and father time is ticking.
Not sure what to expect out of Anderson vs Sonnen. All I know is Sonnen is going to bring the fight to Anderson. Sonnen is a beast but Anderson has proven to be on another level. I love all the trash talk and hype leading into the fight. Should be a lot of fun no matter what happens. I think I'm in the minority as I like both guys.
STACKED card, cant wait.

LOL @ this whole USA vs Brazil thing you dolts buy into. Almeida and Alves both train and live in the United States and consider themselves Americans. Anderson Silva doesn't care for white people and from what I understand has a lot of national pride but most of the Brazilians in the UFC live and train in the States and have been for years.

Whether or not his nationality is determined by right of blood or place of birth or through naturalization, doesnt matter. The point is he listed as a brazilian. That's it. I dont know what else to say.

You don't seem to get it. He considers himself more of an American than a Brazilian. He was born and raised in the United States. He's fighting a fellow countrymen in Matt Hughes. If MMA was an olympic sport he would represent the United States. If he ventured into politics he could even run for president.

It doesnt matter he feels at the moment. He is still listed as a brazilian. Look it up. Cmon man, what is so hard to understand about that. So unless he applied and be granted an american citizenship before the fight he is still considered as a brazilian.
Anyway I just pointed out that the main card is US vs brazil, because it is. It doesnt matter what their feelings are regarding their country. It will not take anything away from the fight. And im sure the fighters are not thinking about this as being USA vs brazil. They see this as an individual fight and try beat the shit out of their opponent regardless of their nationality.

Sonnen literally has a 2% chance in this fight, he doesn't pass guard, he doesn't generate much power from his GnP, he is eternally submittable as Maia proved and Nate nearly proved twice, his striking is sloppy and lacks power, he doesn't close the pocket all that well just wings punches and looks to grab.
He needs to take down and control Anderson for 25 minutes without getting tapped or caught on the way in. Last two guys to have ANY success with that were Lutter, who got tapped after seven minutes, and Hendo who took a shin to the throat and then got grapple****ed in the second when Anderson reversed a takedown attempt.
Sonnen is not a better grappler than either one. He's a fantastic wrestler with an iron chin but it just isn't enough and only his shit talking has anyone thinking otherwise.
Nelson will get KTFO unless he can hit a TD in the first and Santos's ground game is even worse than everyone thinks, otherwise it'll look like the Arlovski fight.
Fitch-Alves should be the most competitive fight, Alves is coming back from a looooong layoff but his dynamite striking will destroy Fitch if they stand for more than a few minutes. But Fitch is capable of GSPing Alves to a decision.

you know that FItch has stopped Alves before right? I think FItch might just do it again. Alves' gas tank is questionable.
I don't have a dog in the silva-sonnen fight but I'm looking forward to it. IMO Silva might gas, he did in the Maia fight, and sonnen can take a boring decision.

In their first fight Alves got KTFO when he leapt into Fitch's guard looking for some wild ground-and-pound and Fitch timed a beautiful upkick that turned the lights off. Fitch had top position and was battering Thiago for most of the first round but Alves had a lot of fight left in him, fight wasn't close to being over before the kick. Don't think Fitch is hitting a knockout shot off his back again.
and man, Alves missed weight again. Guy might be getting too big for 170, he's been on a lot of muscle mass as he's gotten older.

He obviously wouldn't be as good going up a weight class, especially since he excels at WW because he's basically the only elite striker, but he's missed weight twice in his last four fights and got caught using diuretics.
doesn't matter how good he would be, if this happens again he needs to move the **** up.
Plus he cuts from 210 a week out so it's not like he'd be a dwarf.

The thing is, if you cant make 170, you cant fight there no matter how much better you are at that weight. I know this is an ad absurdam argument but Brock lesnar would destroy everyone at 170 but that doesnt mean he can fight there.

How in the hell am I an amateur fan? I'm a huge MMA fan, dickcheese. Why don't you get a clue before you make a stupidass post? If you can't make the weight class, then don't fight there. If you fail to make weight multiple times, then there's an issue. Not to mention that missing weight seems to be one of Dana White's biggest annoyances. The fight was announced as the winner gets a title shot and Alves missed weight. You think Dana is happy?
If you're talented enough, then height and reach won't make that much of a difference. Not tall enough and not enough reach for MW?
Paul Harris is 5'8" with a 71 in. reach.
Manhoef is 5'8" with a 75 in. reach. Fought at MW, LHW and even KO'd Mark Hunt.
Filho is 5'7" with a 70 in. reach. One of the top MWs in the world when he's not batshit insane. He's also fought at LHW.
Sakara is 6'1" with a 72 in. reach. Beat James Irvin, who usually fights at 205 (he starved himself and looked like Christian Bale in The Machinist to make MW) in his last fight.
Akiyama is 5'10" with a 75 in. reach.
Wandy is 5'11" with a 74 in. reach. One of the best LHWs ever. Had a 5-year run where his only loss was to Mark Hunt, who was well above Wandy's weight.
Leben is 5'11" with a 70.5 in. reach.
Lawler is 5'11" with a 74 in. reach.
Okami is 6'2", but only has a 72 in. reach.
Hendo is 5'11" with a 74 in. reach. Fought at MW, LHW and fought some HWs.
Maia is 6' with a 72 in. reach.
Belfort is 6' with a 74 in. reach. Fought at MW, LHW and fought some HWs.
Marquardt is 6'1" with a 74 in. reach.
Shields is 5'11" with a 72 in. reach. Won his last 3 fight which were above 170.
Sonnen is 6'1" with a 74 in. reach. Fighting for the belt...
Oh yeah, Fedor is only 6 ft with just a 74 in. reach. The greatest MMA fighter can be highly successful at HW while being only 3 inches taller than Alves with just a 4.5 in reach advantage over him, but Alves couldn't possibly fight at MW?

hateraid's breakdowns and picks
Anderson "Spider" Silva 26-4
Exellent striker who's accuracy is pinpoint. Strikes with wierd angles. Has submission skills but would rather stand. Middleweight champ
vs
Chael Sonnen 26-10-1
On a win streak including Nate Marquardt, the biggest middelweight out there. Possesses a skillset that has somewhat success against Silva. Great takedowns, confident. US Olympic Team Wrestling alternate
Pick: Elusive Anderson will find a way to KO him. Won't fall into traps. Spida in 3 KO.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jon Fitch 25-3-1 NC
Strong wrestler with great conditioning. Has beaten Alves before. Ramked #2 in the world and only loss in the last seven years is GSP.
vs
Thiago "Pitbull" Alves 22-5
Muscular compact frame. Deadly knees and kicks. Lost to Fitch but has detrsoyed competition since then including Hughes, Parisyan, and Koscheck. Last lost to GSP.
Pick: I think Thiago is a much improved fighter since the last time they fought. Missing weight sucks but you can't deny him mix of size and striking.
Pitbull split decision
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Clay "The Carpenter" Guida 26-8
Explosive brawler. Never gives up and puts on good shows. Has potential to beat anybody in this division
vs.
Rafael Dos Anjos 14-4
Came off a great finish over Etim pulling off a fantastic armbar. Great Jui-Jitsu skills
Pick: Clay for fight of the Night unanimous decision
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matt Hughes 45-7
The winningest fight in the Octogon. One of the strongest in the diviosn. Has improved his striking. Experienced.
vs.
Ricardo "Big Dog" Almeida 12-3
Natural middleweight is testing the welter division. Great submission skills. Dominated Matt Brown in his debut. Can be a big contender in this division if he beats Hughes
Pick: Almeida was tearing through MW so the transition could work. He negates Hughes strength. Almeida 2nd round sub
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Roy "Big Country" Nelson 16-4
Suprisingly agile for somebody so fat. Good hands. Great ring technitian. Has a knack to find ways to win. Not a fan favorite
vs.
Junior "Cigano" Dos Santos 11-1
Maybe not the heaviest hands in HW but probably the most efficient puncher. But his hands are heavy. Win streak impressive KOing Struve, Werdum, Gonzaga, Yvel, and outstriking the pinnacle of striking CroCop
Pick: Just because people are massly underrating Fattie, I'll take Fattie by a smother type submission in 2

he has not changed my mind about doubting he could hang with lesnar....
i still think carwin is the second best guy in the weght class
caine is 2b though...... but i dont think caine has a real chance (obviously anything can happen), but I would put caine in JDS class with the heavyweights

JDS dominates Roy Nelson,Nelson though showed TONS of heart taking all sorts of shots in the 1st round and lived to tell about it.JDS showed very very good takedown defense but looked a little bit gassed because of how many punches he threw but paced himself nicely after the that.Looks more like pacing problem more so then a lack of cardio, small concern imo.Nelson won alot of fans going the distance with JDS.
Hughes subs Almeida, standard fight until hughes catches almeida with a left hook and drops him choked him out

lol What circumstances? It's weak to root for a fighter just because he's from your country. Just because you do it, doesn't mean others do it as well.
I'd rather root for the fighter that I like. The fighter that is more humble and interesting. It's common sense that a lot of these spectators want a punch fest all the time. They boo when they grapple, they boo when they're fighting for position, and they boo for anything except when they trade punches. It's laughable. **** the circumstances.

The mainstream fans are always going to be sheep. The only reason they'd probably even watch is to root for their country. I'm sure for some it doesn't even matter what sport it is. As long as they can chant their country's name, and if their side wins, they'll parade around showing "pride" as if it was them winning. Pathetic. I stand by my statement.
People chanting a country's name during fights are chumps.
It's weak to root for a fighter just because he's from your country.

Carpenter looks like Mickey Rouke from the movie Wrestler. I think he broke that Brazilian jaw thats why he tapped out. Dude had homie neck ass types of turned so i'm sure that pain kicked in. I didnt think dude would win but I guess the ground game is his thing moreso than standing. Because his kicks and boxing game was weak. I dont see how dude didnt just keep kicking the hell out of him tho. His kicks were getting through. Also why did he keep trying to take him down? After 2 rounds he was winning. :confusedshrug:

Emotions, meaning you took it to heart. And now people that have opinions are dumb. Listen to yourself. I don't take sides, I'm always neutral, and I don't get on somebody for their opinion unless they're trolls. The fact that you felt the need to call me dumb shows how mature you really are. This would make sense if I sent out rep without writing my name. I don't send out rep.
GOBB proved nothing. Gallinari isn't a UFC fighter, and I've never chanted against a fighter or player just because of their nationality. Unless you count the USA basketball/soccer games, which are completely different.
I believe in actually rooting due to preferences such as skill/personality over a petty thing such as background.

This argument made me miss out a lot of the last fight. It is pretty much done, like you said. Still, I'll just say that I would never root for the other fighter just because of their nationality. I would probably hold judgment until I saw the first round.

more of a "fight of the night" bonus.....
i think a fair bonus could be double your money, since dana doesnt pay these guys enough as it is. the only fighters it really gets expensive to are the champions.... but if the champs come in to get fight of the night, then that is only good for the card.

It is tough to defend against a jiu-jitsu black-belt for five rounds, but that was absurd. Sonnen had the fight won. There was no reason to leave your arm hanging in there time and again and getting yourself in bad positions. If worst comes to worst, let him up and use the clock.
Sonnen just beat Silva's @ss for 4 1/2 rounds by any measure. If there is a rematch, I will take Sonnen all day.

So... You are gambling that Silva catches Sonnen in the stand-up (I saw no signs of that happening) or he catches him with a triangle or arm bar?
Silva seemed to have no defense for a good wrestler who knows how to use his hips from the top position.
Btw, my brother wrestled Sonnen about 12 years ago when my bro was at Columbia and Sonnen was at Oregon. I didn't realize it until the fight started and I got a look at Sonnen (and heard he is an Oregon alum). Crazy sh!t... I was there. He was a beast back then, too.

Silva got worked. He did nothing this fight besides get lucky at the end. He got buckled and ate fists standing up. He got owned on the ground. His corner was crying at Silva for not doing anything. At least it was entertaining. For example, Jake Shields is what's wrong with gnp. I wouldn't even call that gnp. He just stands on top of the guy and doesn't make any gambles for anything.

It wasn't 'just' ground-and-pound that Sonnen was dominating. He also got the better of Silva in the standup... By rocking him a few times and taking him down at will.
Even from the bottom position, Sonnen through a beautiful reversal on Silva and put him right on his back.
