View Full Version : Modern Female Singers

There's 20 music threads a day here in the OTC, but most are about rap, rock, "how bad todays hip hop is" and in the case of Kizzle old school Motown songs. There's gotta be some modern female singers out there right now worth talking about, so let's give them a thread too. (and before the 15 year olds come in here, yes men are allowed to listen to female singers :oldlol: )

I'll get it started with one of my favorites who somehow gets hardly any air time in America aside from 1-2 singles she's had...Leona Lewis

There's my 2 favorite female singers (2 different style of music). And I had the chance to meet both

I listen to several, many of them being foreign.

Keren Ann

Lay Your Head Down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91g9xqh4qU0)

Sofia Talvik

Ghosts (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dT73DWMpiok)

Nina Kinert

I Shot My Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jH12lBPiwI)

Julieta Venegas

Canciones De Amor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSlJY8sMq5U)

Ingrid Michaelson

Lady In Spain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcWlBniRvFY)

A Fine Frenzy

The Minnow & the Trout (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2_3feh6O4A)

And here's a trio: Au Revoir Simone

Shadows (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yrBOtjmr5k)

I also listen to a lot of stuff fronted by female singer-songwriter types, but I won't list them since this is more about individual artists.

Fine Frenzy. My friend was playin some of her when we were driving but i couldn't remember what she said her name was. She had some chill, relaxing ass songs.

Dearest Theo:

In times of deep, dark depression and also April, nothing seems to lift my spirits like the voice of a woman.

I am reminded, dear Brother, of the time I ventured into the market to hire someone to read me to sleep. I searched and searched until I found the most beautiful woman-like creature. A woman or not, it had twice the bust.

When asked as to how I planned to pay it for its services, I said I have only my soul upon my canvas (really, anything you can spare, Glorious Brother). I must say she was hesitant!

Alas, once back in my humble home, there was not much reading to be done. In my hunger, I forgot that I had either sold or eaten all my books.

The creature inquired about lunch. The gall! I said it shall be my seed or nothing!

Much to my surprise, the big-titted she-monster obliged and a good, rowdy time was had by all.

Now for clean up!

A lot of my faves are in bands but their vocals are vital parts of the group.

Georgia Hubley (from Yo La Tengo)
- An incredibly soothing voice that somehow never gets boring.
"Let's Save Tony Orlando's House"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLkbjGpE3Mc

Olga Goreas (from The Besnard Lakes)
- Just listen to this song. It's incredible. Her vocals manage to stand out even with the shoegaze effects. Great vocal harmonies on other songs.
"Albatross"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWAGQGFxQrQ

Aimee Mann
- The entire Magnolia soundtrack is fantastic.
"Save Me"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNbTC6xLVg0

Emily Haines
- She's got some major stage presence with Broken Social Scene and Metric but her solo stuff is solid too and let's her showcase that voice.
"Doctor Blind"

Grace Potter (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paeNnR33i5Q)

Damn, I can't help but just stare when I see pictures of Leona Lewis. She's just gorgeous. @_@

And I really like her voice. She's one of the few female pop singers I could actually listen to. Also watched her live during the CNN Heroes event last year (EFREN P!) and she was one of the performers for the evening (along with Maxwell. Double whammy). I was entranced by her voice and beauty.

that's pretty good, hadn't heard it. despite it being a youtube video, the production really stood out to me, even though i didn't think the song was the greatest.

she also did a recent collaboration with some dude who made a track that sounds a lot like david bowie (mostly in a good way...it's tedious though if you're not in the mood)

I still consider the 90's modern so there are some songstress I listen to.

Cat Power (i prefer the 2000's stuff over the 90's)
Fionna Apple (only 3 albums, easy to get into)
Leigh Nash's Blue on Blue (her only solo album is actually pretty good)
Taylor Swift's Fearless (I hope I can still hold onto my man card) :lol

I recently DLed Santogold/Santigold and surprised she's actually pretty good. A black chick who does alternative rock/electro-pop. And yeah, I found out about her through this commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSKgfB5a4pM

i like Imogen Heap's music, although i cant quite be sure if she is a really good singer since she f*cks with it so much in post production.

i expect to be crucified for this one, but i like Kate Voegele (she was on one tree hill). no her music isn't anything original, but i like her voice.

finally a name i don't think is very well known- Cara Dillon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGMPUYfVw20

i'm the opposite - moon pix is easily my favourite album by her. that shit is an hour long lullaby.

http://bougieapplebum.com/2010/04/ErykahBadu.jpg

this thread without erykah badu is the epitome of fail. badu is easily the most creative and important female force in popular music right now. janelle monae is like a cardboard cutout figure in comparison. her music spans soul to jazz to blues to hip hop, all of which are executed flawlessly. people will look back on her as one of the best musicians of the current generation; an album like 'mama's gun' will define and preserve a certain time and place and movement of music better than any history book.

Theres a woman born near where I was born (Silver Spring, MD) named Eva Cassidy who I discovered a month or so ago but she's not unknown. Unfortunetly, she passed away in 1996. She has an angelic voice which was a nice contrast to all the smoky or strong typevoices that have been popular. Smooth as butter.

RIP Eva Cassidy
