Agreed. I'd like to know who Thorpe played for at college, too. I think he played Div 1 from memory in the 90's.

If I did, please someone post the link...
I'll give you a hint. I lost in the tourney to a team with not one, but two top five picks.
Thorpe, nice!
I've got a list of teams, this is a very hard game trying to figure this out.
Murray State
Iowa State
Georgetown
Kentucky
Navy
Charlotte
Michigan State
Connecticut
I'm guessing you played against either:
Jerry Stackhouse and Rasheed Wallace
or
Antwan Jamison and Vince Carter
Close?
If not, you played against Jay Williams and Mike Dunleavy Jr or Okafor and Gordon. But I feel like those names are too recent. I think it's one of those north Carolina combos.
Thorpesaurous

Those schools are all way better than the school I went to.
Steve Francis went to prep school in the town next to me. I played with him a bunch of times the whole summer before he went to Maryland.
I played with Iverson at the rec center at GTown while my buddy was going to school there.

Well, homophobic judgements like the one you made most likely come from latent homosexuals.
You don't have the school listed ... but you're sniffing it out.

Thorpe...are you William Moore?
We should be able to guess this between us.
Also, if you, Thorpe and I were in our "primes" (LOL) we'd probably make for the best pick up team on ISH, unless Scottie Pippen posts here.
Thorpe, are you Keyser Soze?

So... You were annoyed by all of the hype that James got coming out of high school and in his first couple of years in the league, so you decided the best course of action was to be even more annoying when it comes to Durant?

per wikipedia:
in the 1997 NCAA Tournament (http://www.insidehoops.com/wiki/1997_NCAA_Men%27s_Division_I_Basketball_Tournament ), the Stags nearly achieved a historical upset of top-seeded North Carolina after leading the Tar Heels by seven points at halftime.
That game almost gave me a heart attack. I was thinking "oh shit we're gonna be the first 1 seed to lose to a 16 seed".
Stag legend Greg Francis (http://www.insidehoops.com/index.php?title=Greg_Francis&action=edit) '97 almost single-handedly upset the Tar Heels scoring 26 points including eight three-pointers. Following the game, legendary North Carolina coach Dean Smith (http://www.insidehoops.com/index.php?title=Dean_Smith) said "I had to find Francis after the game but I couldn't shake his hand because it was so hot."

We were certainly among the worst teams to ever make the tournament. But we weren't as bad as our record. We had two really good players who missed chunks of the season. Francis was a really top flight lower level shooting guard. The kind of guy who if you saw him in a pick up game with any number of pro players, you'd have to watch for a few hours before you realized he wasn't any better than them. For guys like that, it's a matter of a few inches, a few shots out of a 100, that seperates them from the best of the best, and it can be really hard to tell during certain stretches.
The other guy was the more prototypical small school guy. Shannon Bowman. He couldn't a been 6-5. Overweight. But really skilled on the block. He missed a ton of the season. But once he was healthy he was good to go. The Carolina front line was too big for him though. He's the guy you don't pick up early picking teams in a pick up game and he winds up winning 8 straight games before he throws up. A great guy too.
I secretly was hoping we'd get blown out before the game so that I'd have a shot at getting in, but I wouldn't trade the rush we were on during that game for anything now.

out of curiosity did you go on to play any professional ball?
In the late 90's going to europe was not such a common career choice.

He probably is. He played at a higher level than I ever did (albeit different sport) but I can still step into a cage with a pitching machine pumping, say, 85, and tear the cover off the ball. And I haven't seen a live pitch since our conference tournament in 2007. So to think that a former D-1 guy could go out and swish open J's effortlessly isn't far fetched at all.

Makes sense. I worked my tail off for a year to become an above average basketball player. Worked enough to get some semblance of confidence and a tiny bit of swagger. Haven't played much in the last 2 1/2 years, though. I tried to play last week and it was just embarrassing. If you're not naturally gifted or haven't been playing your whole life, you pretty much just lose whatever you had. Not to mention I'm ridiculously out of shape. I took 30-40 jumpshots and hit two, both off the glass from straight-away. Hit a few free throws, but my arm isn't in 'free throw' shape so I was straining to use proper technique and flipping them up there. I had to take them from one step in from the three point line because I was too lazy.
Anyways, I'm just saying it sucks if you're not one of 'those' guys. I have no doubt in my mind that it would take just as long, most likely longer to get where I was about 3 years ago. 80 pounds lighter and 10 more inches of hair and that should do it.
I just lost. . . all the feel I had for the ball. It feels like a foreign object when It's in my hands. Can't dribble, can't shoot, lost my touch around the basket.
But, hey, I suck at baseball now too!

To be fair, being one of 'those' guys generally takes 15+ years of consistent hard work to become. So whilst your year of hard practice is certainly an achievement, you need more than that to "become a natural." I put that in quotes because we always say a guy like say, Pete Rose could hit .300 in his pajamas, but he wasn't born that way.
I can't speak for Thorpe, but by the time I was able to be a legitimate collegiate baseball player, I had played and trained year-round since I was probably 13, and been playing since I was about 4. So now when I go to swing it in the cage, I've got literally close to 20 years of waking up to play baseball behind me.
Of course, you do have your Wince Carter types who were just simply chosen by God to play ball for a living.

Nah, not what I'm saying buddy. I just mean that even a guy like Manny Ramirez worked his ass off in the cage every single day. There are very few guys (Carter being one) that are world-class without really seeming to try that hard. By the sounds of it, Thorpe was one of those guys with above-average talent that worked extremely hard to get himself onto a D-1 roster but simply didn't possess the God-given ability to become a truly top flight player.

Well, I don't know what word I could use to describe my talent level, but after those three years, I felt like I could walk into a majority of pickup games [parks/gyms] and hang with anyone on the court. I'm not saying I'd be the guy who would drop 30 or something, but you know, if you left me open, I was gonna hit it, if you didn't box me out, I was gonna get it, if you weren't D'ing up, I'd drive by you, if you didn't close out, I'd lay it up, etc. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Also, are you one of those guys that could not touch a ball for say. . . 6 months to a year, but hit like 30 jumpshots the first time you do? I hate those guys. Goddamn pure shooters.
There's only one guy I see occasionally, and frankly we're not huge fans of each other, but we're amicable. I came on at a weird time. Most of that team were upperclassmen, and I was a walkon underclassmen. Then my final year we had a new coach, a few guys left, and a whole new group was bought in.
I am absolutely NOT in fact a guy that drain jumpers first time walking on a court. I have a friend who went to Catholic, and he's like that, and like you, I hate that guy's ****ing guts. Like JDG was saying, there was no shortage of work getting to that point. But I sort of disagree with JDG, in that stroking a jumper, and hitting a baseball for that matter, while the result of a massive amount of work, also has a certain natural ability to it that simply cannot be taught. Billy Bean talks about it in Moneyball. He was a huge prospect, and he had all the natural ability in the world, and he put in the work, but he was never gonna be a great hitter, and he just could never figure out why. That's why he hunts for these statistical anomylies who's numbers say they can hit, regardless of whatever other physical traits they have.
I was a pure PG, through and through. I turned myself into a pretty good shooter, considering I wasn't particularly good in HS. Streaky, but range well out to the NBA line. You may give me a couple, but if I hit them, then I became a big problem, and if I didn't, I wasn't the kind of shooter to keep taking them. I can't say I was a physical specimen, but I was moreso than most probably. I'm just about 6', and in college played around 215lbs. I could marginally dunk, if my hands were bigger I'd be able to do it more often. But I was strong, and something of a bull in a china closet going to the hoop, with a knack for finishing from all kinds of goofy angles and weird release points. I was extremely difficult to block. My main gift was always being able to see things no one else could see. I was a really good passer. Guys with bad hands used to hate playing with me because until they got used to it, I was prone to jamming fingers and hitting noses with balls to guys who weren't even aware they were open. My handle is safe, not showey, and off the bounce I don't need much room, so while I may not make anyone fall over, I was plenty quick enough to get half a step on someone, and at 215 or so, if I got shoulder even with most PGs, it was a done deal, and I had a ton of ways to score once I got in there.
And probably my greatest asset, at least in college, I love basketball, and I watched it constantly, and I'm relatively bright, and as a walk on PG, I was asked to run scout teams all the time. I could pick up opposing offenses and defenses and inbound plays pretty quickly from tape, and I could run them. It wasn't always easy because my scout teammates weren't great, but I could usually get things together pretty well.
All that is part of why I've sunken into a bit of a depression since my knees really went. If I were one of those pure shooter types, I could still trot around out there and make due, but I just can't do that. And in practice with my 7th 8th graders, I can still get out there and make a few wow plays off the bounce, and throw create plays so the worst kid on our team gets a couple layups because I still understand how to get other people open, but my knees just wont let me run tirelessly like I used to. So it's been about four years since I really played a game. But my right knee gets operated on this Monday, so I'm hoping I can at least jog through some games soon.
And no I never played pro in Europe. I did live in the Czech Republic for a summer. And I did play with a handfull of pros, and probably could've if I really persued it, but I was just out of college, it'd been a long run of hoops. The walk on role is a lot of work and not a ton of reward (although all the learning I did I wouldn't change for most hoops roles in retrospect short of starring on a major team). So I did a lot of drinking, carousing by night, and was playing in the best pickup games I could find the rest of the time. And I could pretty much always hang.

Definitely don't mean to belittle the amount of work it takes to truely excel at anything. I would be considered on most fronts to be really really good with numbers, but I'd hate for anyone to say that I was born that way. I studied and put in tons of hours to get good at it, but at the same time, I'm not gonna sit here and say I don't have an abnormal aptitude for it. I've tutored, and I know full well that there are people that just aren't good at it. I've gotten them good enough to pass, and if they wanted to work on it full time, I could probably even get them good enough to go through a college curriculum, but they're never gonna be great.
My buddy who went to Catholic, I've known him since we were 6. We started playing together on a travel team at that age and our parents had to tell the coaches we were 8. And even then, the kid could just make shots. His father could to. It's just the way it was. And again, I'd never say he didn't put in the work. He blew his knee out his Junior year of college I think it was, and he busted his ass to get back out there, so it's not like he wasn't a worker. But the point is there was no amount of work I could do to be able to shoot like that. Even when I have it going, it just seems like my ball doesn't even hit the net the same way his does, if that makes sense.
And what's weird is that I'm sure there are plenty of guys who see me shoot and think the same thing. So it's all relative to a degree.
I have a friend playing in China now. He's a nearly 7 footer. He's a little younger than me, but I used to play with him a lot, we worked out together. He was lazy as hell, but incredibly gifted. 7 feet, lefty, incredibly soft hands, great touch, even a natural shooter. But he was so lazy. Now I don't want to lay it all at his feet, he's got some limitations. His body doesn't really have a lot of pop in it. But he could easily be an NBA big if he wanted to, but he'd rather be big fish in small pond, and I for one don't blame him.
But the point is we had a coach who used to work us out who used to say "there's two ways to be good at anything in life. First, you can be lucky and just have been born that way. Or you can bury your head into it and make yourself that way. But there's only one way to be Great ... and that's to have both of those first parts." I still believe that.

I love the fact I'm able to play point guard now. All throughout my basketball life growing up I was forced to play small forward or power forward in organized ball, when clearly my biggest asset was passing and defending.
I love the feeling of throwing a nice pass to someone and seeing them finish it, particularly fooling the defense with your pass.

You played national level basketball? How old are you?
I played under 18 national league from '06-'08 (north west region), but I never made the transition to our 18+ team, because I went to uni and couldn't get to training. I would have loved to played though. I'm still only 19 and only been out of basketball for a year, but I'm currently trying to get back into training to play again.

I'm pretty sure some of the clubs listed are not even around anymore, or have changed names/ areas.
Most people I played with went on to play some BUSA ball for uni but apart from that unless you as an individual give basketball your undivided attention it is easy to drop out of the sport. Just not enough funding and places to play. Me and my mates used to rent out an indoor court once a week just so we could get in some extra practice during the winter.
I want to play national league at least by the next year providing I stay healthy.

I've been like that since I started to play, which was really late in life. 19 is late for a sport, IMO. Before that I was the hot-headed teen who would punch holes in walls and wooden fences and shit like that. After playing for so long, I'd grab a ball at 2am, walk to the nearest park and shoot free throws.
It's really an out-of-world experience. The setting is like a movie. Cool summer night, all you can hear is the dribbling of your ball and the odd sound of a car driving past in the distance. The air is fresh and it feels cool on your face. There's on streetlight barely illuminating the basket.
I think about playing ball back then now, before I had the bad break-up with my girl and the rough stretch I had for a while there after, that I just wish I could go back to 19 when I would do that. Just me at the free throw line, no sounds, no iPod. Just me, the ball, and the hoop. Every release and every swish would relieve whatever stress or pressure I was experiencing. It's truly an enlightening feeling for me.
That's what I miss the most. Not really the competition, but what it did for me in other departments of my life. Now I just read ISH. Someone put a bullet in my head. :oldlol:

I'm hoping I can play national league next year aswell. I was going to play for my Uni this past year, but I got too involved with partying and the training was a good 30 minutes away on the bus, f*ck that. I've now dropped out of uni and planning on taking this next year and trying again in 2011. Hopefully I can join the uni team then.
when I played national ball it was a 3 hour round trip 3/4 days a week! was such a bore:lol I used to pass the time by reading Slam magazine front to back several times over. I remember asking my mum if we could move house so I could be near my training ground :oldlol:
One really interesting thing you said was about how you have been partying the past year, I have also been doing that the past year and it amazes me how much Basketball has been on my mind the whole time, it literally is like a disease! I would often find myself thinking about it when I was at a bar or club.
I am moving back up to london in a few weeks, I realised just how much I miss competing and how I would rather be working on my jumpshot then out at clubs. Seems bizarre cos everyone else my age just wants to get pissed.
P.S sorry Rufuspaul for hijacking your thread, I would have started a new one but it's rather cosy in here
Thanks for sharing your basketball experiences with us Thorpe. It's good to hear a poster open up.
I see a lot of parallels in a lot of ISH posters' basketball experiences. A lot of guys that got injured, seem to post here.
I feel frustrated to the point of not playing basketball. I have felt that way for the last 2 years, at least. I've stated in threads before, at the age of 21, I could reverse dunk, do basic 360's and felt comfortable flying into the lane. I was the best defensive player on every team I ever played for, and I had a height advantage against almost every point guard I played against. I was never a good shooter, hell, I was never an average shooter. As a kid I convinced myself I was going to be an NBA player. I had pictures lined all around my bedroom walls of Jordan, Johnson, Bird, Stockton, Penny and later on Pierce, Payton etc.
I practised every morning for 2 hours before school, and played every night from about 4pm through 10 or 11pm and I never developed a reliable jump shot. I really feel if I had've gotten a jumper, been a more coachable player, and never had serious knee injuries, that I would have been a NZ player at the Olympics at least.
The most frustrating part of my injury was the fact that the injury occurred because of muscle imbalance. Too much working out of the quads, and not enough work on the hamstrings and glutes.
Now I don't want to play because I get scored on by scrubs. It's depressing. Still trying to find another sport, I've become obsessed with swimming, cycling and kayaking. I'm training for the Coast to Coast for 2012. If I'm still on ISH, I'll upload some pics of my training and the event.
Here's the website for the Coast to Coast for anyone interested:

3 hours? F*cking hell. When I was playing national league, the training was only about 10 minutes in the car. But when I got to uni, in order to train it was 30 mins on the bus, which to me is a long time, but I'm used to having everything within walking distance.
It did suck for games though, because we usually had to travel atleast 40 minutes. The furthest we had to go was 3 hours up north to Barrow. That kind of traveling, with three 6ft+ guys in the back of car is f*cking ridiculous.
My first semester at uni, I was partying maybe 4 times a week atleast, for about 4 months or so. I blew all my money on drinking, but I got it out of my system or burnt myself out, which ever you want to view it. I then met my gf at the start of the second semester, in January. So, I sort of lost interest in going out and getting piss drunk, I still did for a couple of months (I probably haven't been out properly since maybe end of March or April). I started to eat healthier and started to just get healthier in general. Now all I want to do is just get back into playing basketball.
