View Full Version : TV shows that were so shitty you can't believe they commisioned more than one season

I'll start:

Free Radio
http://www.vh1.com/sitewide/promoimages/logos/az-project/free_radio_281x211.jpg
This show was beyond terrible, but they still made two shitty seasons.

Free Radio is a television show, created by Lance Krall and Rory Rosegarten. The show originated on VH1, but has also played on Comedy Central, and Super Channel (Canada). It stars Lance Krall, prominent for his role on The Joe Schmo Show, and Anna Vocino, who also starred with Krall on The Lance Krall Show. The show focuses on a dysfunctional radio station, KBOM. Krall plays a moronic intern turned moronic DJ when KBOM's regular shock jock, Rip Rebel, defects to satellite radio. Lance eventually gets his own show entitled Moron in the Morning. Real celebrities guest star as themselves with Lance, who often either does not realize who they are or mixes them up with other celebrities on the air. Most of the dialogue is improvised

According to Jim
http://www.tvjab.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/mp320_65.jpg
This followed a safe formula, but wasn't slightly funny. I can't believe they managed to milk it for eight seasons.

James "Jim" Orenthal, (whereby Orenthal is his second name. The family's surname has never been revealed during the show's run.) is an abrasive but lovable suburban father. Much like his real life counterpart, Jim's character is noted as a fan of blues music, as well as the Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bulls, and the Chicago Blackhawks. Together with his wife Cheryl, whose second name is Mabel, they have five children: Ruby, Gracie, Kyle, Jonathan and Gordon. The family residence is 412 Maple Street, Chicago, Illinois, United States.
Jim often finds himself in messy situations because his laziness inclines him to search for alternative ways of doing things with less effort. While Cheryl's brother Andy may be Jim's best friend, her sister Dana frequently teams up with Cheryl against Jim.

New Adventures of Old Christine
http://www.tvshowsonnet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/The-New-Adventures-of-Old-Christine.jpg
Let's take the least funniest actor from Seinfeld and give her a sitcom... then drag it out for five mores years.

Christine Campbell (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is a neurotic divorced mother and owner of a women's gym who is in a constant struggle to keep pace with those around her. A frequent fixture in her life is her irresponsible ex-husband Richard (Clark Gregg), whose new girlfriend (Emily Rutherfurd) is also named Christine, hence the nickname "Old Christine" for the Louis-Dreyfus character. Christine lives with her son Ritchie (Trevor Gagnon) and her brother Matthew (Hamish Linklater) while Christine's best friend and colleague Barb (Wanda Sykes) is constantly a shoulder for Christine to lean upon. Christine also struggles with her inferiority complex with the snotty "meanie-moms", Marly (Alex Kapp Horner) and Lindsay (Tricia O'Kelley) at her son's private school.

These are the first ones that come to mind. This isn't just a list of shows that I hate, because there are a lot of programmes I despise that are/were quite popular, ie. 'Friends', Glee, Everybody Loves Raymond, Greek, etc. The shows I listed are ones that were so bad that I can't believe got more than one season.

What have you got?

The first time I saw it I thought it was going to give me ear cancer. Take a bunch of kids from minorities or with disabilities (or overweight), give them a well-known song and get them to completely oversing it while trying to emulate Christina Aguilira's voice. It is ****ing painful to listen to and cheesy to watch, but people seem to love it.

Jersey Shore without a doubt. Who names a show after Jersey and makes it take place in Miami for the second season? At least change the name of the show or something. The show is so pointless and stupid.

I just thought of another:

How I Met Your Mother
http://images.dailyradar.com/media/uploads/showhype/photos_large/2008/05/29/How_I_Met_Your_Mother.jpg
This show is just corny, cheesey, tacky, unfunny and Doogie Howser should NOT be allowed on television. It has been running for five seasons but will apparently end after eight, so there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

How I Met Your Mother is an American situation comedy that premiered on CBS on September 19, 2005. The show was created by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays.
As a framing device, the main character, Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor), with narration by Bob Saget, in the year 2030 recounts to his son and daughter the events that led to his meeting their mother, which explains the title and allows for a narration in the past tense. How I Met Your Mother's other main characters are Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel), Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders), Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris), and Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan).

What are you talking about? That's a great show. It's one of the few comedies on now that doesn't suck.

Roseanne was beyond terrible.

Again, what in the hell are you talking about? That was a great show. It didn't get bad until they won the lottery, which was like the last or 2nd to last season.

I guess Rosanne must have some fans or else it'd never go beyond first season. :oldlol:

"The show was hugely successful from its beginning, spending its first six seasons among the Nielsen Ratings' top five highest-rated shows. The show's success inspired television networks to offer a rash of sitcom deals to stand-up comedians, a practice that continued for years afterwards. During its seventh season, the show's ratings dropped but it still managed to remain among the Neilsen Ratings' top ten highest-rated shows. It was only during the show's ninth and final season, when the show's storyline drifted away from its original premise, that Roseanne dropped below the Neilsen Ratings' top thirty highest-rated shows."

Why do people find Doogie so funny? He wears a suit.... haha. He says, "Suit up." haha. The show is for retards. Doogie is a gay man in real life trying to play a womaniser. It's see through.

Arrested Development, now that's good comedy. "I don't know what you heard about me, but I'm a different kind of cop. I'm from the streets, and I'm the la-aaaaaaaast cop you'll ever want to mess with in a darkened al - dark." alley

How I Met Your Mother and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia are two great comedies. Those definitely deserved more than one season.

You like them because you're the kind of person who uses the term, 'douchebag.' They are not funny shows to anyone with average intelligence and upwards. You're the same guy who claimed Liam Gallagher as one of the greatest frontmen ever. I've seen them live and have to say they are the most boring band I have ever seen live. I was throughly disappointed. He stood still, sang out of key, and balanced a plastic tambourine on his head. I hope he never makes music again. His brother could just sing all the songs and they wouldn't miss a beat.

And no shit, NPH is an actor. (I had to look up Doogie Howser. Little before my time I guess)

He's a terrible actor. People love him because it's the popular thing to do. "I watch Glee and listen to Lady Gaga. Isn;t Friends the best show ever."

The OC is actually a really good show, especially seasons 1 and 2. Season 4 was different, but also good. Really, only season 3 was the season that wasn't up to their usual standards. Season 3 was a lot darker and didn't have nearly the humor and funny moments that the other seasons had.

They have a good premise to the show and it had a lot of heart to it. As far as the teen drama shows go, it was one of the best- if not the best. It lasted 4 years on FOX, which is pretty good. The acting on the show was good. Some of the storylines were annoying, which is going to happen with nearly every show at some point.

There is a difference between shows you don't like and shows that are shitty. Did you actually watch either of those shows (GG or The OC)? GG definitely has more of a case for a shitty TV show, though. The OC though? Nope. GG is a lot more superficial, with not nearly the heart The OC does. When GG will go off the air, I won't really care, but I was disappointed when The OC did. The OC though? Nope.

How much of either show have you actually seen? Or is it just grouping them together for the genre as a whole because you don't like it?

Edit- My choice for a shitty show- King of the Hill. I have not laughed at a single moment in any episode in that trash.

How I Met Your Mother is a bad show. It's simply not funny. Seems to be a hip thing to like. It's just not funny. I wish there was a better explanation. It seems like it SHOULD be funny, but its not. Young, supposedly hip....trying to be "Friends II", but its not.

I don't get Glee either. Why does anyone like that show? It's so transparent....

The King of Queens is awful. I think Kevin James is one of the most overrated personalities in show business. The guy has NO TALENT. Zero. I guess its funny that he's overweight or something. He's like the anti-Chris Farley. Farley says "hello" and its hilarious. I guess audiences indiscriminately love fat people.

But it's different than the UK version. I realize they mirrored a lot of the UK version early on but Michael Scott and David Brent are completely different characters to me. Both beyond hilarious. David Brent was even more of a train wreck than Michael Scott and I loved it. I think a lot of people don't get into The Office because they can't find the humor in awkwardness.

I really can't understand the love for this show. Maybe it's the laugh track that kills it for me. I don't usually watch comedies anymore with laugh tracks other than Seinfeld re-runs.

it's crazy the difference in opinion. Just shows you that everybody is different and has grown up different. It is a trip how something can be drop-dead funny to someone and the next guy it just doesn't work for.

shows mentioned in this thread that I like (love):

King Of Queens
It's Always Sunny
Seinfeld
How I Met Your Mother
King Of The Hill
Prison Break

it doesn't make me or anyone a douchbag for watching or liking these shows.
that kind of logic is just crazy.

Have never seen one episode of the Office. weird right?
I work in an office and everyone here says it's hilarious
Love Steve Carell, just haven't gotten to it.

Anything with a laugh track
Anything that takes place in a house set (family shows)
Anything that is 'reality'
Anything that lasted more than three seasons

Except Seinfeld. At least the writers were creative in the story lines

one more derail before i'm done. i miss the days when comedic actors had great timing and a feel for the material, and could actually play off of each other and even improvise creatively. instead of just acting like overgrown 19 year old college kids.

to get back on track, i have to add veronica's closet.

I direct you towards Psych. Monk and Psych for me are the shows (well Monk is over but you know...) where you still see brilliant things happening comedy wise.

I know everybody won't like every show, but I'm surprised at the quality shows that are not liked.

- How I Met Your Mother is arguably the best comedy on tv right now. Somebody said they didn't like it because it has a laugh track, really? The creators didn't want it, but it's a network show and they were forced into it. If you think Neil Patrick Harris only wears suits, you're flat out wrong. Every character has depth, there's witty writing, and heart.

- The Drew Carey Show is the greatest self-deprecating show of all time. Stuck in a dead end job, fat, and single hanging out with loser friends. It's written very well, and doesn't drag on. I bet you never watched before season 6. Season 6 turned to shit.

- It's Always Sunny is also up there for best on tv right now. I understand that people think it's too wacky, and I agree. I think the first season and second were Godly. The next few just turned to wackiness, but it is still great enough for me to watch.

- Just Shoot Me. You don't see shows like this anymore, a great ensemble cast, comedians from every scene as quest stars, and good writing. It was consistently funny for every season it was on.

- Mad About You. This is a great show, it's a more emotional/relationship/real world Seinfeld. Their relationship isn't funny, but their foibles and character traits, along with situational comedy make it great. Paul Reiser is a great comedian.

I don't get Ced saying shows aren't funny for the intelligent crowd and then praises the Office and Flight of the Conchords. :facepalm

If it's not a creative decision to use a laugh track, but one forced on the show by the network, that shouldn't detract from the show.

The Office is weak as shit compared to the English one, and relies on retarded wackiness, uncharismatic actors, and mugs to the camera. No one but Ricky Grevias was "charismatic" on the British version. No one. Most of them did a good job, but Ricky was the only one that was charismatic. Carrel, Rainn Wilson, and to some degree Krasinski are all charismatic.

I love both version. But the character development was much better in the American version. The British version had David Brent (Michael Scott), Gareth (Dwight), and Tim (Jim). Those were the only actors with any kind of charisma on that show. The chick that played Dawn (Pam) was very dull and bland. Outside of those characters, no regulars were really established. And certainly not charismatic.

I do agree that the "retarded wackiness" as gotten out of control the past couple of season. I also don't like the dramatic changes they've made to characters and story. I prefer shows like that to have crazy things happened to the characters along the way, but the show should ultimately end up in the same general place it was when it began.

I have no problem with someone saying they like the British version more or they think it's a bit better, but to say he's far and away better is ridiculous. It just is. The American version been on for much, much longer. You'd have to compare the American version in its prime to the British version. The longer you drag something out, the more likely it is to lose its appeal. That should take away from the fact that the American version was very, very good for the first 3-4 seasons.

Of course I don't watch stupid teenage girl shows like Glee and Gossip Girl, but I understand why they are heavily watched. Because girls just eat that shit up. They love high school like drama and all that b.s, so I get it.

What I really don't get though is Big Bang Theory. That show is not funny. I feel kind of embarrassed watching it. That whole geek thing is so played out, its ridiculous. I understand the whole show is centered around the concept, but my God, how many different ways can they constantly express that they're nerds over and over again? It just goes on and on. We get it, they're nerds. We get it, they like comic books and WOW. We get it, they still live with their mom, and still think girls have cooties. Not really funny. Storylines are so predictable and bland as well. Just don't get the hype and love around it.

Office is still good. Andy as the boss is great, and James Spader as the new CEO is perfect. Plus, Pam has been demoted to a 2nd tier character on the show, which is good because she was there to be the love interest which made her seems more drama than comedy. Now, not much love interest drama going on, so we get more jokes for the sake of jokes. Really, I don't miss Steve Carrell at all.

I understand why horrible television shows exist. Mainly, it's because my idea of horrible can often be another person's idea of great (and vice versa). So with that, I'm not necessarily wondering why the show Two and a Half Men exists. Rather, I'm just trying to figure out how so many people can possibly find it funny. I respect other people's idea of humor, but that show doesn't hit me as one that such an apparently super large mass of people would enjoy. I could see it hitting some folks, but more on a niche level - like a House of Payne.

Personally, the show itself makes my brain fall out of my skull. The super predictable punchlines, the lines obviously written to yield a predictable laugh track response, the "Mennnnnn" thing that plays between every scene. It seems to be the epitome of every bad 80's sitcom. And maybe that's why people are drawn to it, for nostalgia. When I can hear it playing from another room, the audio sounds like one of the radio commercial parodies Grand Theft Auto used to do for "My Three Dads". It's so formulaic and predictable I sometimes think that's supposed to be the joke - the irony of its horribleness - but it's not.

If someone doesn't like a show, then apparently it doesn't belong on TV. You have to love the logic of some people. I can't answer the question because if I think a show is shitty, then I stop watching it, thus I don't know if it remains an awful show that shouldn't be renewed. I mean, I thought The Cleveland Show was awful, so I stopped watching, but maybe it got better and that's why it was renewed. But people on here watch 1 episode if even that and then declare that a show has no business going beyond season 1 or they'll hear someone else say they don't like a show, so they'll adopt that opinion.
