I read about this a couple of days ago. The day before he saw a shark but he didn't have a video camera, so the next day he goes all the way back out in the ocean so he can video tape it...
Swimming with death right there...

Apparently according to some studies, great whites around America are far less aggressive than those found around Australia. They believe those found in Australia are simply biting to kill now where as before they were taking a bite to taste. Something to do with lacking diet around Australian waters.
This is all we need now... sharks actually wanting to kill us.

People see sharks all the time. Nothing new here.

Yeah, this would have been more badass if the surfer tossed his board aside, and rode the great white shark on a wave.

Guess you didn't watch shark week on the disc channel....Every show had guy's taking video cams in the ocean where they were swimming with Sharks...They even had guys showing you how to get out of a cage with a shark in it...So he led a shark in the cage with him, locked the cage and grabbed the shark by its fins and led it out...They even showed how to defend yourself from sharks...They actually hit sharks in the nose, and sometime grabbed it by the nose and held it their.
Show me where people see Great White Sharks up close and personal intentionally. By all means, start listing them. What this dude did was nuts. That Great White was basically swimming around this surfer and at any moment could have attacked or knocked him into the water. He got up close visuals of it. We're not talkin about an big boat where a diver goes in the water inside a cage to film a Great White for us to see on the Discovery Channel or Animal Planet. Smarten up.
Me, smarten up? Where the f*ck are you from? Land-locked Philadelphia?
You have no frame of reference here, GOBBy.
People have encounters with great white sharks daily. Daily. The only difference is that they usually aren't filmed. Australians, New Zealanders and South Africans aren't dickheads who walk around with cameras hanging around their necks. It's you fat American assholes that want to win 1st place on America's Funniest Home Videos, so you can buy an extension on your trailer-home.

makes sense. Cali has a very rich environment due to the cool Arctic current that follows the west coasts of the americas.
And yet no surfer out in the water chillin with a Great White Shark within arms length of touching it or getting ate. Good job bozo. I loved the youtube video "Devils Teeth" with 2 guys on a f*cking boat spotting a Great White. So comparable to this one.
In America we dont see Great White sharks mingling with the human species. We hear about surfers being attacked by sharks because they are mistaken for meals. We dont hear a surfer encountering a Great White one day and the next going back out there to video tape it up close and personal. Newsworthy to us. Who cares about your country? Not Americans. So f*ck off because if we went to war? I'm enlist just to kick the living shit out of you Aussie f*cks.
I'll go to a couple basketball and football games this season and think about how you have to depend on an internet site to stream you the game i'm at. While you're asking poster "anyone got a good link" I'll cheer a play that you missed. Go play rugby and sniff someones ass.

One video. Did you bother to see the rest? Typical GOBB, doing a half-assed job.

No good argument starts with, "In America."
There are plenty of encounters recorded in the States. You're just not looking for them. This was news today because there was nothing decent to report. Look at the guy's footage..... terrible. This is the news for today, some guy saw a shark and filmed it. ZOMG! A shark! I've surfed when there's been a shark warning before back home. They aren't interested in eating humans. They're curious. They usually bite and let go.

American Football is for wimps. I'll be going to a few bball games this year again, as I live in Toronto. Maybe I'll check out Bosh's return to Toronto on February 16th, when I'm back in town. Should be epic.
GOBB, perpetually spitting information out before getting his facts straight.
sometimes its a good idea to just STFU and disappear when someone owns you on the internet. You just got called out for your ridiculous comments up there and instead of just quietly going away you go on this anti-america tirade which has absolutely nothing to do with what you were called out for. I guess you are lacking in self-esteem?
Owns me? Look at what the moron typed before claiming someone is owned. I swear GOBB gets by on reputation and long-winded posts these days. Guy does a half-assed job of posting

What do you mean there was no news to report? This isnt breaking news. Its a simple video of a surfer encountering a Great White Shark and showing us video. Sorry the video isnt crystal clear because this wasnt some Shark team going out to explore the Great Whites. This isnt front page news. Breaking news. Hot news of the day. Its a video much like numerous videos uploaded. Guy calls in and shares with cnn and the viewers. Nothing more nothing less. Who cares if sharks arent interested in humans? A shark bite especially by a Great White can be deadly dipshyt. You can lose a limb and bleed to death. Thats no big deal because the shark isnt interested in finishing you off. :facepalm
What are you babbling about in here? You just want to attack something for no reason. Do you even watch CNN?
Yeah but this one was done on purpose. He went into the water on his surfboard PURPOSELY just to film the great white five feet under his board.
He went out purposely. Wow. Colour me unimpressed. If he has a significant other, I'm sure he/ she was happy with him.
If you watched the whole video you'd see the shark attempt to take a swipe at his board with his tail. If he hits him, he's probably dead.
How so? How does he die from being hit from a tail???
Man, you should apply for a job working with Michael Bay.
This was a pretty brave act. 99% of surfers would be out of the water if they saw a great white below them. You're acting like he's at ****ing seaworld swimming with dolphins.:facepalm
Brave or stupid? I don't think you understand my argument at all. I'm saying it's not newsworthy. People swimming and on surf boards have encounters with great whites (or worse, tiger sharks) daily. This guy choose to go out when there was a shark there. He's an idiot and it's still not newsworthy.
"Oh they ussually bite and let go." Holy **** man. So you'd lose a limb or take the chance of hemorrhaging to death but "its only a bite and they'll let go." :wtf:
I was trying to show that sharks aren't as dangerous as they are made out to be. They aren't the killers they've been made out to be through film and local authorities. I never said what he was doing wasn't dangerous.

I watch CNN about once a week. I saw this today and wondered if they owed the guy a favour. Why put this story on the news? The titile should be, "Local Moron Risks His Life to Surf with Shark to Film Terrible Footage."
So you can lose a limb. Why swim with a shark? Why report it on the news for other idiots to see and go, "Hey, looks like a wicked idea."?

Yip, that's how sharks work. They use their tails to knock people off surf boards so they can eat them.
And of course it's stupid. A lot of brave acts can be considered 'stupid' because they involve a high degree of risk that something bad is going to happen.
It's not brave. It's stupid. We do brave things when there is risk involved for a reward, such as saving someone's life.
Have you been to America?
Have you been to Philadelphia?
Have you been to where I reside now?
America, yes. Philadelphia, no. I have better things to do. Where do you live now? What kind of place can you get being a mailman? They pay you well? About 50k? Not bad. Should be able to get a decent apartment.
You're making a big deal of this for no reason.
No, I'm not. I stated my opinion, and you came in here acting like some big know-it-all like you always do. Only this time you don't know what you're talking about. Real badass here guys. He surfed when some guys blows the Shark alarm in the Australian seas. Awwooooooooooooooga, Awoooooooga get out the water guys Awooooooooga Honnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnk.
Hey everyone look at the yellow streak CED is leaving in the water as he swims towards land. :facepalm
Nice story you made up, fatass. I don't see a single shark in the water around noon as a threat. Anyone that spends a lot of time in the water is generally well educated about sharks here. They feed at dusk, dawn and night. You're only likely to be killed when there is a mass frenzy. Fortunately, it's too cold in New Zealand waters for us to have a lot of sharks, so I've never heard of someone being trapped in a frenzy.
The tails knocks him into the water and chances are that shark which that surfer can not SEE gets attacked. The surfer already stated his arms/legs werent dangling off the board he was on. There is a reason he wasnt chillin this way. He was standing on the board. Tail hits board, guy loses balance and into the water he goes. Now limbs and moving as the great white that was within arms lengths from him is back. I guess the shark will take just a bite and decide "Not into humans, sorry".
Wow, you know how a shark will react? Studied the psychology of sharks? Smart guy here.
:oldlol: Ced is being extra curmudgeonly today.
Yeah, a bit. It's just frustrating to see people :
1. Blow shark sightings into a big deal. SHARKS ARE NOT AN ANIMAL TO BE SCARED OF. RESPECTED YES, SCARED OF, NO. Fear creates hate, and mass killings. The reason they are starting to make more and more contact with humans is the fact that we overfish and take away their natural prey. Sharks are going extinct, fast.
2. Post what they don;t know about. GOBB and tpols. Love how everyone thinks tpols is a troll and GOBB will undoubtedly post that, "everyone is against you Ced. Give up." Terrible argument. Guy lives in Philadelphia, may have never swam in the ocean before in his life and is in here spreading unwarranted shark fears.
GOBB, love how you project into others. I can tell you I've been in the water when there has been a shark warning and you can think and type what you want. Thing is, it's the truth and you're too much of an internet obsessed fat loser to be able to imagine that people in other parts of the world can post on a message board and have a life outside of it.

It's not like this is being blown into some huge, breaking-news story. It is simply a video posted on CNN that is cool and could be interesting for shark fans. I think it is both brave and stupid of the guy. Would I do that? Not a chance in Hell. Of course the footage isn't going to be Discovery channel HD. It isn't an ordinary shark either; it is a Great White. They always hold particular interest in the public eye, including myself. I am fascinated by them. If you are not interested in this video, then simply move on.
Anyways, I think it's annoying how the media and public portray sharks, particularly Great Whites. It is ignorant and just reinforced with movies like Jaws, because dumb asses think that Great Whites go out with malicious intent of hunting/hurting humans, which simply isn't the case. Don't want to get bitten by a shark, then don't go in their ****ing territory, retards.

I see a Great White Shark in the water no matter what time it is? And i'm in the water on a surfboard with open water? With a jaw like this...
Its a threat. Ignore it all you want. No one wants to get bit by that thing.
Calculated risk. Let's say you're a piece of live rat in a fridge full of chicken wings, steak, salami, ham etc. Is a human going to eat the rat meat? No. MY reference is stupid. But stupid people need things explained to them i na stupid way. See: Forrest Gump.
GOBB, the reason why you wouldn't stay in the water is because you've bought into shark hype. Sharks are for the most part, not dangerous. I watched a good documentary a few years ago, it's called Sharkwater. Watch it. It's actually really interesting, informative and entertaining (if you enjoy amazing cinematography).
I dont know how a shark thinks or what that shark in the video was thinkin or would have thought if the dude fell into water. Its unpredictable so why roll the dice and gamble? They guy in the video even said he was STANDING on his surfboard. I wonder why. Maybe to avoid the potential risk of limbs dangling to entice the sharks interest? Oh wait I dont know what the shark would think he the guy was actually in water or limbs dangling off the board.
Why didnt he just dive in like the Croc Hunter. :facepalm
You play these little you dont know what the shark is thinking game. You sound like a dog owner who says thier big, agressive dog doesnt bite. Only you believe the owner, walk past and the f*cker bites you. Now the dog owner says "He usually doesnt do that.".
Again. You're projecting your fears onto others. You're scared of sharks and don;t want to be in the water with them. I get it. You weren't raised around the water, and sharks are foreign and scary to you. I'm shit scared of camping in the middle of nowhere in Canada, due to an irrational fear of bears, even though statistics tell me an attack is unlikely. I guess I can;t blame you for being scared, you're just inexperienced and uneducated on sharks.
:oldlol: Ced would argue the sky is blue
It is. Your comment has no relevance here.

Sharks are delicious. Especially when marinated in mercury.
i wouldn't want to be anywhere near a shark in the water. we used to watch them off the docks in Montaulk when i was small and they swim nice and slow and deliberate most of the time, except when they don't and just shift direction and launch at something. And even though that RARELY happened, id imagine if you are in the water and that happens you are totally ****ed.
Cedric would you do what that guy did?
Sharks dont eat people. And it was the afternoon there so it fed already and wasnt in the mood to bite anything. So yes I would continue swimming but I would not have video taped it. For what? Its not newsworthy dude. Oh crap you made me miss a wave! Ugh, anyway I dont fear that massive thing that just hit my board with its tail. That was pretty neat, neato to be exact. Stop fearing the sharks! They dont want you!

When I was watching shark week, all the experts say the majority of shark attacks happen midday from 11am-2pm because that's when there's a high concentration of people in the ocean.
Look at this save the shark f@g.
I'm not wasting my day trying to educate the uneducated. I'll stick to one line responses. That's all you deserve. I'm not typing a big-ass essay. You did, because you're frustrated that you're wrong and need to make up for it by typing what equates to the ISH version of War and Peace.
I dont like any animal killed. I dont even like when animals are killed when they attack a human given they are in thier enviroment where a human shouldnt be. Great Whites shouldnt be killed off or near extinction. I am afraid of snakes but I wouldnt want a snake killed and skinned. I dont see why I have to type this out just so I can say I wouldnt want to be in the water with a Great White underneath or beside me.
You're scared of sharks and uneducated. All you have experienced is what you see on TV. Of course you're scared of being in the water with them. I should explain by what I mean as in the water. I don;t have a desire to seek out sharks and swim or float above them. If they happen to be at the same beach as me, and it's not between the hours when they feed, I'm not going to be too worried unless I see multiple sharks, in that case my wetsuit is going to be full of bowel movements.
Yes I'm spreading unwarranted shark fears when the Rick from CNN first reaction to dude who sent him the video "Are you CRAZY?!". Instead you complain about how its not newsworthy given you only watch CNN once per week and who knows how long you even watch it.
I watch the news, it's just not always CNN. I get most of my news via online news agencies, CNN for international, and my local papers for you guessed it, local news. I hardly ever watch cable news. This fact has no relevance to you're argument. I watch enough news to know what is newsworthy and what isn't.
Face it this is about some wackjob foreigner who has "swam with the sharks" and sees Americans who he dispises reacting to a Great White shark encounter. So you want so bad to educate us when 1. We dont want your schooling 2. We dont want to be bit or next to a massive shark. Look at you talkin about fat Americans and now I'm fat because well I live in America. I'm not insulted by that. Just makes you look incredibly dumb.
I don't despise Americans. I just wanted to give you a cup of xenophobic behaviour, that you are so famous for dishing out. You can make fun of other people's countries and expect them to laugh it off, but as soon as someone makes fun of America, you're all butt hurt. This website is home to almost as many international posters as it is American posters.
I mean really a 1 min segment on this and here comes the guy who watches CNN once a week (7 days in a week) crying about whats newsworthy. Hilarious.
Again, what's your argument? I can say what is newsworthy or not. I'm not making you agree.
I couldnt care less about your encounters with sharks or some guy blowing a shark warning horn signaling your goofy ass you leave the water. I never asked you. Go create a f*cking blog if you got things you want people to know about you. Open up a twitter account and tell people following you what you are doing every other minutes. Not sure why people like you want to walk me down some memory lane as if I care.
My shark experience was not out of context. I think having experience with being in the water with a shark is relevant here. After all it is a thread about sharks.
Have you ever swam with Great White Sharks? Yes, though not directly.
Would you swim next to a Great White shark? Yes, though I'd rather be underwater.
Would you sit on your board with a Great White shark underneath you? Not if I knew. That's asking for an attack. Surfboards with dangling limbs look just like a seal to sharks through the shadows created.
If the answers are no, no and no what are you babbling about? I mean you're the guy who says dont fear these big motherf*ckers right? Why do you leave the ocean if there are shark warning you p*ssy? Come on tough guy, sharks dont eat humans. Stay in there big guy. You can do it. You paddling your ass off back to shore tho. Ok.
I told you my story. You're trying to twist to sound cool. It is what it is. I stayed in the water. Lots of my mates did.
No one wants to swim next to a f*cking big ass shark just like they dont want to walk past a big ass dog. Period.
Seriously? You're scared of dogs, too? This is too much?

Nope. I wouldn't seek out sharks. If I was in the water and they announced that there was a shark in the water, I wouldn't leave. If they said there were sharks in the water I would leave. If one bumped into me, I'd start making my way back to shore. You get bumped, usually next comes the bite.

Ced is crazy.
This is a Great White Shark. Sorry if I dont want to be in the same water as one. Sorry if one is near me I will become afraid of its unpredictable self. We cant all be tough guys who continue swimming after they encounter a beastly animal.

When I was watching shark week, all the experts say the majority of shark attacks happen midday from 11am-2pm because that's when there's a high concentration of people in the ocean.
Shark attacks. When sharks aren't hungry but curious. Maybe you die of lose of blood, or trauma. Most people survive from these attacks
What happens to people attacked early in the morning, late in the evening and at night? A foot might wash up on shore. Shark shits you out a day later.
not sure how the cnn piece spreads fear of sharks when the shark never attacked, clearly the videographer was fine.
Sharks are portrayed as big scary beasts that can kill you at any second. Though that is important to know, it's important to educate the general public about their behaviour and plight, too.
the education is not to make it so you can go swimming with them. it's to educate you on what to do should you encounter one, and to not harm the animal by your actions. it's really not so you know how to go film one safely.
I'm not saying that. This guy should be made fun of. I'm glad he wasn't attacked, it would have helped spread irrational shark fear further.
The reporter should have said, "So you're an animal antagonist? A dumb-ass? An attention whore? What is it?" That guy needed ridiculing.

I think more people die due to lightning strikes than shark attacks each year. That said, I certainly wouldnt want to go surfing with a great white. I have seen reef sharks while snorkeling and never felt threatened, they are pretty small though.
See thats the thing! This thread isnt about sharks (in general) or shark attacks. That pansy turned the whole thread around to that. This is about swimming within arms reach of a GREAT WHITE SHARK. This is a Great White Shark that BUMPS your board with its tail. But alas some pansy wants to take the thread in another direction because he cant even answer what would he do if he encountered a Great White shark like the guy who filmed the video.

Iits pretty much a given that you shouldnt go swimming with great whites. Even the dudes who are filming documentaries for shark week usually dont actually get up close and personal with great whites like they do with other sharks.

I dont need to put fear in anyone. People I'm sure are smart enough to know that Great White is NOT to be ignored. I'm not gonna sit here and guess it fed already and isnt hungry. i like how he said sharks should be respected and not feared, as if fearing them is the completely wrong thing to do. if i'm ever thrown into a situation where i'm face to face with one, i'll be sure to put a hat on it's head, shake it's fin and offer it a cigar.

Someone in here said that sharks don't eat in the middle of the day? Sharks don't have an eating schedule. They eat when there's food in the water.
Proof? (http://dsc.discovery.com/sharks/top-shark-facts-02.html)
89. A common myth is that sharks don't attack in the middle of the day. And that may be true — but it's likely because most beachgoers get out of the water to rest or eat at lunchtime, so there aren't as many people around to cross paths with sharks. Sharks don't follow the same three meals-a-day eating schedule as humans, they eat when they find food, no matter what time it is.

Gross. Humans are killing 100 million sharks every year and that number is quickly rising. Many shark species are on the verge of extinction. Shark fishing practices are grotesque and disgusting, often fisherman just cut off the fins and throw the sharks back in the sea to die. Sharks have been around for hundreds of millions of years, since before trees or dinosaurs.
In a decade or two when the sharks are all gone you are going to have to settle for something like clubbed baby seal soup.

No but I don't approve of how they harvest shark fin, I wish they would use the meat at least for sashimi or something. Its an inefficient use of resources and I bet if they raised them on farms they would taste better anyways.

I'm a fan of shark steak.
3/4 pound filet ... should be sized to small porter house steak.
thickness apx .. 3/4 of inch
Place in a buttered small cast iron skillet.
Salt and pepper lightly.
Medium heat , and then cover ... keep an eye on it , flipping regularly.
When lightly golden brown on both sides it is done.
let it sit in the pan for 1-2 minutes and serve with melted butter on top.
It tastes like veal with a light fish taste.
---------------
Aspargus , cottage fries , and aromic. flavored white or rose wine.
Any dessert and coffee or espresso .
=========================================
This humanized planet needs to learn to farm fish like they do with other domeestic animals.... fish are good for you...
Throwing away a whole shark , for just their fins is just fcuking weird.

I'm alittel late on this thread .. but I saw a show some french guy swimming with a professional shark scientist that has observed great Whites .. .and they actually touched the great white while it was swimming.
This expert , knew what their body language was saying ... and was calm enough to swim to the sharks side and actually touch it.
It was a PBS show.

The Jersey Shore is one of the popular destinations for "land locked" individuals to go to. Beach, boardwalk, fishing (includes sharks), swimming, surfing, jetski, parasailing, shark/dolphin tours. Want to build sand castles? Be my guest! My uncle has a condo he rents out in Wildwood. Right down the street from the beach. I went there last summer. My sister used it last month.

I've sea kayaked around a shark before. Didn't feel the need to pull out a video camera and record it (if I knew I'd be on the news, maybe I would have). Just kept on kayaking away. I can see why it would make national news in America though. Sharks are basically a mythical killer creature to 90% of them and almost all the exposure they've ever had to sharks is reading stories about shark attacks. It's natural they find stuff like this amazing and news worthy, their thought process is probably that sharks exist to only kill humans.

He recorded a GREAT WHITE SHARK. Have you swam, surfed or kayaked with one? Maybe you did and decided "Meh, just another shark. Who hasnt seen one? Americans perhaps". The perceived danger is a lot less than you think it is. Throw a grand at a random experienced surfer off the coast and give him a camera, and he'd go and get you the same video. Shark encounters happen all the time and a very very low percentage of them actually result in an attack. Regarding the first bolded part: Honestly it from the looks of this thread it seems like America is the only place that runs 24 hour news cycles on some stations. While it may have been national news it wasn't something that had any airtime besides a quick little blurb on CNN and the other 24 hour news shows. The reason they show shit like this to fill time, you can find a lot of stories as meaningless as this. Look at theCNN video page (http://www.cnn.com/video/) On the first page you can see: "Vince Vaughn leaps from plane with mom", "France's police force cuts height rules" and "Zebras make a run for it". Do you actually think people give a **** about Vince Vaughn, Frances height restrictions and Zebras? No, CNN just needs some filler material to put on the air. None of those videos, and the shark video, were shown on the 6:00 pm local news and the 6:30 pm national news (the main news time slots). The only reason I even know this shark video exists is because of ISH.
Regarding the second bolded part: It's not as common in America. I'm sure there are things that get time in other countries that are barley a blimp on American news stations. It's not like Americas are calling each other up after seeing the footage talking about seeing a shark on CNN. It's just a cool little video that got some airplay on a network desperate to fill up 24 hours of t.v. time with things that will keep people interested.
You and Ced can stop with the hyperbole. I guarantee that over 99% of America didn't see that shark video it's not something that people here really care about, I bet it was shown when most people were at work anyways.

And the story is all over American news. Even brought the guy in to do a segment on Fox News. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1r_1_TAhEbQ)
Could you point out the surfboard in that vid? I must have missed it. I did see a shark cage though and a guy who has studied sharks his whole life.
Is English your second language?

I guess other 24 hour news stations in other countries never show something that Americans would find to be menial/mundane. :facepalm

This doesn't appear to be a problem in the Ohio River.
