Just out of curiosity, since I want to know everyone's opinion on this. But when you are looking for a friend or a girlfriend or a soul mate, etc. What is the most important personality trait to you?

Intelligence, this single factor can determine tons of personality defects, including self esteem, self awareness, and how one interacts with people and the world around them.

Intelligence and courage most of all. Honesty and loyalty are important too.

This, although it is hard to say what intelligence really is. Basically stupid women annoy me alot. Women are naturally irrational erratic and too emotionally involved in their behaviour. but an 'intelligent' woman manages to mostly steer clear of these pitfalls. not talking about bookworm intelligence

Loyalty. Most marital problems are a cause of not being faithful
Close second, if I can put it into a trait is communicator (would that be right?)
No communication, no love, trust, humor, or happiness.

Sense of humor.
It's my defining trait, and I cannot be with anyone who doesn't have a great one and can find the funny in things.

Intelligence doesn't correlate with most of those qualities. For every confident, charismatic genius there is an aloof and insecure nerd.

After putting some thought into it I'd probably go with Empathy. I think empathy is a trait that is a precursor for a lot of other things.
Sense of Humor - a lot of observational humor and wit is being able to understand how people feel in different situations
Kindness - a lot easier to follow the golden rule when you can empathize well
Honesty
Loyalty
etc.
Basically, I thing the odds are a lot higher of some being an all-around great person if they have a strong instinct for empathy.

Funny you mentioned that. Just recently in Ethics class we were discussing the merits of virtue and as we were casually strolling along the Christian version, then the Benjamin Franklin set (industriousness, patience etc).. my friend interjected. Said that Osho guy only said you need one thing. Consciousness. Now I know a bit about dude's life story and how one can rightfully label him a charlatan guru, but after a brief retrospection, I realized that one teaching could be the key. As a person expands their mind's capacity to be CONSCIOUS of one's surrounding, isn't it natural that their attention would focus on another human's feelings/sensations etc. And wouldn't they simply stumble across by the other virtues by sheer happenchance.
Anyways pardon me for the rant, but the feeling of vibing.. naturally seeing someone immediately clicking with them and leading them down a conversational adventure. Truly an easily accessible pleasure life has to offer and verily a joy to give people at least the --- temporarily-- feeling of them being understood, listened to, appreciated, recognized, important etc.

I'm going to change my answer to accountability.
The ability to accept one's own faults and share in 50% of the responsibility of the relationship.
I find that where there is moments of challenges, instead of working on the relationship women tend to look elsewhere for comfort and sympathy. this generally is the beginning of the end of pretty much all relationships

Sense of humor, I need for a girl to understand that I jokingly like to be aggressive to people. I can't hang with females that think you're some kind of asshole when you're just ****ing around with people.

Loyalty is overrated. I don't mind having a sidepiece next to my girl. I don't say I would allow her to have a sidepiece of her own, but would at the slightest of slights I would understand. I'd beat the dude's ass who was cheating with my girl, then just go on with my life.
