Americans are concerned about the smell first and their appearance comes in 'LAST'

Yea. In Europe we like to clean up the areas we live in, but we don't really care about ourselves.

In America, we like to present an image of cleanliness about ourselves, but the surrounding areas are garbage dumps.

American's show off their obese clothing line from China , by wearing shirts long to cover up their guts.

Technically speaking Turkey is Eurasian... geographically it is barely in Europe, they're not an EU member (yet) and their culture is not European.

In fact, the majority of the country is similar to their Eastern neighbours - Iraq and Iran.

What this really means, is that Granger is a retard.

The only bit he's right about though, is that Turks do smell.

Stereotypes are usually right though. I'm gonna go and drink some sugary tea and make my teeth bad. Enjoy your burgers

People come to America for a myriad of reasons it would be foolish of one to assume they knew all the reasons.

Generally speaking, in my travels, people tend to love American culture and despise our government.

When I went to Saudi all kinds of Saudi soldiers who I was told hated Americans were ultra friendly to me and asked me all kinds of questions about Chicago and rap and such.

Similarly, the Englishmen and Frenchmen [military] that I worked with overseas were very polite and helpful....picking up us lowly enlisted servicemen [their officers] and giving us rides back to our complex....personally my experiences with the British, French, and Irish were very good and I cannot talk bad about anyone I met from those regions...I guess it takes the internet to bring people's true selves out.

The fact that America has more immigrants than many other nations combined isn't related to this topic?

If their countries were so much better then why do they leave?

People aren't illegally crossing the boarder, floating in on rafts, and enduring long
trials to enter just any country.

I'm not saying America is perfect but I've been to Italy, UK, Saudi, and Ireland....all nice places, but America is a nice place too if you know where to go.

Ive been to Turkey a couple of times, Turkey is one of the finest places on earth, but Istanbul is not the right place to go if you want nature, the beach and oxygen like Danny Granger obviously wants?! Istanbul even tho is beautiful and a deep historic place populates like 15 million people from all over the world Europe & Asia and the heat/"polution"/humidity is ridicilous also caused by the heavy insane traffic, its pretty normal in the bigger cities like that in especially Asia, the centre of Istanbul is not the best place on earth for fresh Oxygen... i had no trouble though at the part of Istanbul i was in, it was the contrary infact.

Then again i dont understand Dannys statement, did he maybe mean he smelled peoples pitholes and didnt like it? lol

PS: Come on? Culture/Religion & Europe? Europe is like the most cultural place on earth.... Each Country in Europe has its own religious / non-religious belief and cultural difference and economical difference and everything imo.... Speaking of Islam, it has been brought to Europe the same way Christianity has been brought from Middle-East the same way long time ago....

What is European? If you go from North to South to East to West Europe its like visiting whole other planets when talking about Culture/Religion.... trust me.

The only thing we Europeans have really "typically" incommon is that we are White.... but even from the looks you can see the difference from Europeans, for example a South European and a North European, those from North are more Light haired and from South more Dark haired... :P

Man people immigrate to most developed countries, just because the US has some of the biggest borders in the world and a dirt poor country in Mexico to the south doesn't make them any more attractive than so many other places. Just more obtainable to get into because Mexicans can cross by foot.
I doubt it has a lot to do with the people of America being so nice.

I know a lot of Americans don't "like" Europeans, you can hear it in the general voice and all the stereotype jokes. It doesn't matter though because most of these people have never been outside the borders of the US, and a lot of them have never even seen a real ocean.

What? Dude there are two big ass oceans surrounding our country why would you presume that most people can't take a simple car trip?

As far as the rest of your post you aren't being totally fair. People choose to come here, Mexicans could go to SA or Canada....Pinoys, Cubans and Haitians go through great lengths to get here and often times its immigrant that have more pride in America thqn the natives.

And yes, as a whole, despite things like economic exploitation and using up resources like the Colorado River we have been more than nice to Mexico in recent history.

Actually it's probably a military thing. I'm always surprised at how smart and open minded they are (at least the ones I know), far from the image we get from movies.

Generally French have a strong sense of hierarchy, are not nice to people in lower ranks, and don't try to be helpful with others especially with an american. And they smell bad, in fact the guy sitting next to me smells like he spent the night in the sewers.

I said that of the people that don't like Europeans most of them have never been outside the US and a lot of them have never seen the ocean.
It's not a simple car drive when you live in a place like North/South Dakota, western Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Minnesota, Kansas or Iowa and earn minimum wage or in that range.

Yeah they COULD go to Canada, but that's a long ass ways, so it's not the obvious choice.
Why would they head south where the conditions are pretty much the same as in the country they live in?

Like I said, people from underdeveloped countries risk their lives coming to developed countries all over the world, here are some people going from Africa to Spain or Italy

http://www.instablogsimages.com/images/2009/04/02/african-immigrants_998807c_aT1rL_3868.jpg

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QfVWU-2pVL4/Sgv9ASKXMAI/AAAAAAAAGLs/nopG6UVT79Q/s1600/illegal-immigration.jpg

I doubt they risk their lives like that because of the Spanish/Italian culture and people, it's probably just because they want work and the chance for a better life than where they came from.

When I lived in Germany, it was overwhelming true anyways. Even our "Host Nation" teacher described to us that Europeans think too much washing washes natural oils from your skin and is a bad thing, used to always make the joke, "Americans shower every day a week and go shopping once a week, we (Europeans) go shopping every day and shower once a week." Their dental hygiene was also terrible (probably a result of all the beer, coffee, and smoking) as well as the women didn't shave their pits.

Admittedly, this was over 15 yrs ago and a google search of "European hygiene" agrees as well but refers to it as an "outdated stereotype" so maybe they have stepped their hygiene up since then.

I agree he shouldn't have said it, but I don't think it's that big of a deal.

My sister went to school in England for a year or two and came home with some guy that she was planning to marry. Jesus, he smelled bad. No deodorant on him anywhere.
  This is somewhat unrelated but in highschool there was a guy from Hong Kong and I don't even think he knew what deodorant was. During gym class we were DYING. So after gym someone approached him with a brand new deodorant and asked him if he knew what it was. I think due to the language barrier he didn't seem offended. The guy even told him to make sure to rub it up and down his armpit after showering (which we are assuming he did once in awhile). So he nodded his head yes, and said "thank you very much." But he continued to smell like ass so obviously that plan didn't work out. :facepalm

Yeah, I'm sure Europe was uber clean when they were dumping their own shit and piss on the street.

I didn't see anything wrong, I thought it was just a joke. I dont see what so rude and insensitive about it, Gogetter. I've heard people say the jokes about America's obesity, how cold Canada is, how much weed Jamaicans smoke, etc....

I know he wasn't joking (he was roasting them) but that's not the point. Imo, and of course it's your right to disagree, it's rude to call out a group of people like that through the media especially when you are a guest on their soil.

If a foreigner would have said something in that vein about Africans or African-Americans during a tourney in America I would have said the same thing and certain people would snap. You're an athlete leave the jokes to the comedians and play ball.

I run sporting events or I used to, and you would like to think pros could handle themselves better than school kids.

The kids that had knew better to roast say...the shoes of the kids that didn't have.

Lmao.....man the people that live on the streets can travel easier than some guppies and clock slaves...the guys out here (I live downtown) be talking about going to Washington and California all the time, and I'm pretty sure some do.

A bus or plane ticket can be less than three or four visits to the plasma center.

How many millions of broke people have been to either Cali or Florida (Disney)?

Back to the point, you can't deny that America is a popular culture and a lot of people come for that.

Wow, I don't know a single person who is like that.

Well to be honest, many Americans are stupid.. Especially in some parts of the country, the same way that maybe people do smell worse in some parts of Europe.

And no one other than Americans like America

That's funny, because I spent this entire summer with people from England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Wales, Australia, South Africa, Colombia, Hungary, and Mexico and they all loved America. Many of them even want to move here permanently. But yeah, way to be a naive, uninformed ****tard.

I think this whole thing about generalisations, is worse in America than it is in Europe.

I'm British, and I don't think of myself as European, I think of myself as British, or English, to be more precise.

I think there's a lack of awareness in American's as to how diverse Europe is.

Sure, size wise, it's pretty similar, but geographically, it's very different, and the cultural differences are huge.

There's the language barrier first of all. English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Norweigan, Dutch etc.

There's the climate barrier... there's the mediterranean climates (think Miami, but hotter in places), the more temperate places e.g. Germany; and the cooler places e.g. Norway, which are closer to Montreal type climate.

Add to the fact that most of these countries were at war with one another until well into the 19th Century, and you have a continent with many of it's countries having distinctly different histories, that have really only been open up to trade in the last 60 or so years, and whose only real similarity is (in most cases) membership of the EU, and the fact they're all next door to one another.

Just looking at the cuisine you can see the differences - British (roasts, meat & veg, fish & chips, pies, pasties), Spanish (tapas, paellas), Italian (pastas, pizzas, fish), Scandinavian (cold meats and fish)...

This translates into other areas too, architecture and design, personalities and attitudes.

You won't find that kind of segragation in the US.

The other thing worth noting is that culturally, British are closer to Americans than any of Europe, yet we're miles apart.

Anyway that's all we have time for in class today, see you next week.

People in Central Europe take a shower just as often as Americans. And of course they use deodorants.

As for Granger: It's an offensive and very ignorant statement. First of all, you can't really talk about Turks as Europeans and furthermore, they are using deodorants, too. And if Granger incidentally met someone who doesn't, it's still kind of rude to generalize in such a manner. listen, everything is relative. i'm sure Europeans have a level of acceptable hygiene. what you have to realize is that young people in america are extremely considered w/ outer appearances and IMAGE. we are the silicone capital of the world, tanning booth capital, 24hr fitness on every block, etc.... a lot of people around the world go natural and don't put on a ton of shit. Very unpolite and stupid of Granger to say this, well at least he didnt talk about raping anybody's daughter or sister, I really hope that someday basketball players that have nothing interesting to say will just shut up and we wouldnt be discussing about their ignorant statements.

This kind of crap only creates hatred between americans and europeans and at the end of the day we share the same culture and we have learned so much amazing stuff from each other its stupid to be arguing about cultural differences. English invented sports, americans invented basketball then the nba, and so on, we are sharing our culture all the time.

And none of this has anything to do with how the rest of the world views America.

Sure it is. Anywhere is nice if you have enough money. Again, what does that have to do with this?
