I'm getting internet at the house on Friday and want to know if I should upgrade from the base package with 1.5 mbps. I'm not looking to download movies but want to be able to easily open general webiste and download music and watch youtube videos. Will this be fast enough?

really depends on what you do online. 1.5 is enough to surf simple plain vanilla pages.

but if you wish to download videos or watch higher definition videos everyday, you might want to upgrade a bit. I'm at 6M, and I still feel the lag in some live videos.

In the grand scheme it's pretty slow, but you'll be able to surf the web fine. Most basic packages are 6-10 mbps download speed.

Ya, the fastest this company offers is 3 mbps. And it's the only internet company where I live, they are just servicing our area now so i've went the last year with no home internet.

The downside to living in a rural area.

Are you sure it's 1.5 mbps and not mBps?

yeah that sucks, thats basially the best internet you can get without having to move. I think my internet package right now is for 7m but it still feels slow when i am trying to multitask. I wish verizon would stop advertising FIOS in this area like its available. I called about it and it wont be coming to my area for probably another year...:facepalm . your speed should be good enough to do most things and more important than that POST ON ISH... which is really all that matters..:D

Well said

you gotta be careful did the website say "up to" speeds of 1.5 mbps because you might not actually even get that when they come out and put in your line.

Actually its pretty slow for downloading...

1.5 mbps is actually 150kbps download speed, that means if you are downloading something that is 1 mb.

It would take you almost 10secs instead of instantaneous.

If you are downloading something that is 10mb.
Would take you 2 mins rather than 10 seconds.

Its fast for browsing.
But not for watching HD (720/1080) videos on YT or downloading huge files. (GB files)

It's only as fast as your connection from the hub to you. They can advertise some mean speeds, but in reality, you may never even see close to the capable speeds.

7mbps feels slow? what in the world are you multi-taking?
Downloading 10 large files at the same time?
and watching 5 movies simultaneously?

well i have 2 roomates and they have laptops also so when we are all on it drags sometimes. Mainly due to them trying to download games and movies at the same time.

Yep you're right.
Watching a You-tube Motion Picture HD(720 or 1080) video will not be fluid.

1500 kbps actually and I doubt it'll reach that. That's the maximum speed.

Could definitely go over. My "max" is 15 but it almost always is running above that, sometimes by a lot.

Yeah, I have Fios because of where I live and people who live 5 minutes away are complaining they don't have it and have been promised it for like 2 years.

Well that's really unusual. It's probably a mistake on your ISP's end. They're supposed to cap it at the max.

If you actually monitor your speeds you might find the same thing. I have had this at the ISP's in 3 different states; it's not that uncommon.

It's common for DSL users to get capped off at the advertised speed. All Cable or Fios users usually go over the advertised speed. My package is 15/2 but I usually get 20/2.

sheesh some of you guys are getting monster speeds. I am gonna go back to time warner cable and get rid of this DSL. I was getting 14 down and 5 up and it was waaaaaayyyy better than what i have now. yeah there are some people who live like a mile or 2 away and they get FIOS.... . I wish i could get that 40 down and 20 up with a 10 ping that would be niiiiiceeee.

I pay 24.99 a month with comcast for the 12 mbp/s down, but that is the 6 month deal. Plus, I pay 10 bucks a month for my cable tv (very very basic:lol ). 35 bucks a month ain't too shabby.

Edit: I recently purchased a $20 used cable modem from Amazon to forgo the $5 monthly charge that comcast makes you pay to rent their pieces of shits. Pays big time in the long run.

smart guy and thats a hell of a deal for 12mbp. I was paying $50 for time warner getting 15mbp that is the max package they will give you. I hate the fact that we are one of the most technologically advanced countries yet we are ranked like 20th in the world as far as average isp speed.

Yeah dude, ISP's overprice their bandwidth big time. When I joined Comcast, the customer rep tried to up sell me to the highest package, including the trio of phone/internet/tv. With my frugal nature, I said I wanted the lowest possible. haha. I have been getting the 6 month deals every since I started. I do miss ESPN cuz I don't get it with my basic TV. I don't understand why our Internet speed would be ranked so low either. What's the country with the highest speed?
