It has happened to me multiple times since summer started. It is quite literally the freakiest and scariest experience in my life. It's about the most sound validation of the supernatural that I've ever encountered. I think I am being haunted by demons (plz don't laugh).

It has happened to me, but it usually just happens when I'm just laying in bed almost trying not to sleep. It happened a lot to me when I was younger, well not a lot, but a lot more than currently and recently in my life.
My brother told me when he experienced sleep paralysis that he felt like somebody was trying to kill him (or something like that), he told me that someone was like holding his mouth. He didn't know who it was, he accused me first though. :lol Ever since I've been freaking about sleep paralysis and I always try to get out of it as soon as possible.

If you believe in demons then you have no choice but to believe in God also. Pray him and ask him for protection (seriously)

Yep. The only way I have been able to stop it is by saying "Jesus." That's the only word I can utter.

Sleep Apena is just as bad, mainly because there is a chance you could die. I experienced it a lot last year, but that was because I was looking at the ceiling when I was sleeping when I was experiencing it.

Been there. Freaky, and honestly very disconcerting.

Just to ease your mind, they aren't literally demons. Hallucinations and a sense of terror are common with sleep paralysis.

Here's my story: Something major in my life put me into deep depression, where I feel like I am physically life but emotionally dead. I think somehow that has triggered this demonic manipulation.
I've done plenty of research since it first started. I've heard that according to Turkish legends, a demon sits on your chest when it thinks you are dead. It happens because you sleep face up in a coffin-like orientation. Another that is there are demons referred to as Incubus and Succubus that sit on you and will molest you/have sex with you as you are sleeping. There are other possible theories and explanation, but it's amazing that this experience is so pervasive in history and across cultural boundaries.
Apparently 40% of the population has experienced it.

Wow, when you have sleep paralysis it basically means your body is asleep and your brain is. At least that's what I've always thought. I don't believe that demons are molesting me or any of that shit, wtf. :wtf:
It just minds your ****ing body is tired (Probably from physical activity?) and your mind is perfectly awake (Thinking about shit like demons molesting you?)

I dare you to read some of the anecdotes. You don't only dream about these things. It's far more realistic. There is an eerie gloomy presence surrounding you. In my case (the one I had about two nights ago), something is applying a downward pressure on me, suffocating me. I was wearing earphones connected to my ipod, and the fukking thing started sliding the headphones across my chest as if they were a noose and it was going to kill me.

Quick question since you've been ignoring me the entire time. Did you experience it when you were trying to fall asleep or did you experience it when you are about to wake up? I've never experienced sleep paralysis waking up, only trying to fall asleep.

Okay, those are far-fetch'd reasonings as to what is actually happening. I know the medical definition, that your body is out of line with your REM cycle. That's superficial though. There is no actual explanation for what triggers this.
I swear, bro. Do some research and read some of the personal accounts. Most people feel that a stranger or some malevolent entity is acting upon them. It's commonplace. If that's not demonic, I don't know what is.

Several times when I sleep in the couch during day time.
I posted this several months ago here in ISH:
"Talking about that kind of stuff. Have you guys heard of Sleep paralysis? It has hapenned 4 times with me already. It started last year and always happened when I'm taking a nap in the afternoon in supine position.
It's scary as hell! You basically wake up, can look at the roof and all, but just can't move your body, legs, arms, nothing, only your eyes. And you see stuff, like a nightmare.
The first time it hapenned, I was in the couch, fell a sleep and when I woke up I could not move and got scared and nervous and I saw a men walking into my house (he looked like he was ready to kill someone) and he was going toward the room my brothers were. And I wanted to scream, but my mouth would not move and I could not speak. Then I started to feel more calm and breathe and all of the sudden I could move again. Shit was scary. Don't wish that to anyone. Now when I have it (like once every 4 months), I just stay calm and it ends fast, sometimes it feels like I'm coming out of my body, like floating ahead of it. Strange shit."
It has almost stopped since I started praying before I take a nap. Yep. If you believe in God it would help you. I know it has a scientific explanation, but I guess praying makes me feel safer physiologically speaking. And it has never happened to me when I sleep at night in my bed. Only in afternoon naps in the couch in supine position.

Neither. I wake up in the middle of the night, except my eyes are closed. Something is suffocating me, I can't move a muscle and I can't say anything. I have the same eerie feeling that something is hovering over me. It last for about 2-3 minutes.

Well I told you that my brother had something completely creepy happened to him right? How someone was basically trying to stop him from breathing by closing his mouth?
I'm not saying you are an idiot or you don't have a ****ing clue what you're talking about. I'm not a religious person, so maybe that is why me and you have different opinions on this. You seem to be someone that is really into your religion (guessing Christian/Catholic).

Who Develops Sleep Paralysis?
Up to as many as four out of every 10 people may have sleep paralysis. This common condition is often first noticed in the teen years. But men and women of any age can have it. Sleep paralysis may run in families. Other factors that may be linked to sleep paralysis include:
* a lack of sleep
* a sleep schedule that changes
* mental conditions such as stress or bipolar disorder
* sleeping on the back
* other sleep problems such as narcolepsy or nighttime leg cramps
* use of certain medications
* substance abuse

I can tell you that I don't drink or do drugs. Nothing major in my life has changed since these events first precipitated (except for the event that put me into depression, but that started a few months before). I've always been under constant stress.

My recommendations is to not sleep in your back and not sleep looking up the ceiling. Because you can also get Sleep Apena if you do so, which is just as bad as Sleep Paralysis. Less scary, but pretty bad. Maybe you think too much when you are about to hit the hay, that is usually what happens when I experience sleep paralysis as well.

Yep. I knew about what causes it.
* a lack of sleep - Yep.
* a sleep schedule that changes - Yep
* mental conditions such as stress or bipolar disorder - No
* sleeping on the back - Yes. Only in naps on the couch. That's why I never had the paralysis in my night sleep in my bed.
* other sleep problems such as narcolepsy or nighttime leg cramps - No. Sometimes I wake up with cramps, but it's rare
* use of certain medications - No
* substance abuse - No

The worst is when you have it and you see a family member walking around and you want to scream to them to help you out but all you can do is try to communicate with your eyes.

I have experienced it once a couple years back. I'm not religious and I'm betting it had something to do with the blue and yellow purple hills. Haven't had it happen since.
I have not experienced sleep paralysis, but I've read a decent amount about it. Many researchers believe that sleep paralysis is the link that connects many stories about alien abduction. It is common during sleep paralysis for the people to experience terror when they cannot move and sleep paralysis is sometimes accompanied by hallucinations. Due to experiencing terror, the hallucinations usually take on a negative or scary tone and the overwhelming feeling of helplessness (since there are negative visuals and you cannot move to get away). People often put everything together and come to believe they were paralyzed by visiting aliens. This is believed to be one of the reasons why people have comparable alien stories without ever colluding their stories.

It's lazy of me to tell you guys to find anecdotes from people who have experienced this.
This is from one site:
http://www.realitysandwich.com/sleep_paralysis
I only had one episode of sleep paralysis, and sure enough, a black shadow-man (he was man size and definitely bigger than me) crawled into the room from the floor and sat on my chest. He didn't whisper anything to me, but I knew he was male, and he raised a club above his head and began to club me violently as I struggled to wake up. This article gave me much to think about, I did not know that the figure was commonplace.
I can associate with a few things in this article, and I'm new to this stuff. I often get spells 3-4 days or so when I get quite bad night terrors, waking up and feeling a great presence but can see nothing, I have once seen a small girl peeking over the side of my bed, but nothing else. A few weeks ago I was feeling a great presence whenever I was alone, asif I was following myself around, this occasioanlly led me to start running to escape it and locking doors its like someone is constantly peeking over my shoulder. Any ideas on this, like I said, quite new to this stuff. x
I had the experience of the Incubus several years ago, around my 22-23th birthday and it really really frightened me. After that I had several paralysis of my body while sleeping but last night was the first time it happened to me in a dream. I was paralysed inside my head, dreaming that I was in a bed and suddenly I couldn't move. It frightened me again, this time there was an alien there. I knew, I couldn't see it but it started to get inside my head. I felt something, like a breeze inside my brain. Slowly covering all my head. But I tried to escape, and I tried to move and yell. And before it reached my frontal lobes I woke up. I even made some crazy sounds (my husband said..) while sleeping. I turned 30 last sunday. The funny thing is that I hoped I could find something related to this and just checked RS and here it is.. ! Any thoughts?
My mother and father are devote christians with spiritualist underpinnings... When i was a child i woke up one morning to my mother telling me that in the middle of the night she woke up to being strangled in her sleep by a chimp like "demon" with human features the size of a chimp. She struggled with it waking my father, who reported that he saw it sittign on her chest and he punched it off of her. he felt his fist impact the "demon" and they both heard it hit the ground with a thud. the door was locked to the bed room as was the balchony door. they searched the enitre room and open closest and conjoined attic space to no avail. What ever it was had vanished. Mom had bruises on her neck of hands smaller then my fathers much larger hands. A shared sleep paralisis hallucination? no... nothing of the sort... all above explanations fall short to explaining the particular experiences my parents described. One explanation I tend to lean towards as a possability, is the notion of the tulpa or a thought form. A subcouncious thought form that takes on physical form whos origins are the mind of the one precieving it. The explanation that I would preffer to go with is that there are beings within this world that we do not normally interact with, that exist on their own autonomous accord.

Yeah I've heard that too, not saying I believe it(a bit far fetched). When it happened to me, I heard a loud noise, almost like air blowing into my ears or a loud motor. I was sweating, and even though it was night, I swear I could see light. I had my head turned to the wall and my body was facing up, so all I could see was light reflecting from the wall. I panicked and dozed off.

Lol, good. But I mean like have their been any changes in their lives in the following months? I think demons tend to try to influence a person's life in subtle ways. That they cling to their subjects and focus their efforts on trying to destroy their lives without those people even knowing. So I'm wondering if any out of the normal or any consequent misfortune may have affected your brothers. If you think i'm wacko, don't feel obligated to respond.

Scary sh*t. I'm thinking that they are able to enter some sort of parallel world. I've heard of people leaving their bodies through sleep paralysis and being able to fly through walls. It sounds crazy... let me find their exact words.

Here we go..
I had sleep paralysis randomly during my early 20's, often with the sensations of small feet, like a cat, crawling on me. I had a definite sensation that I was not alone...Then one night an incredibly intense sensation in my chest began to worry me. I later heard something on the radio about a football player dying from sleep apnea, which caused him to stop breathing and suffocate in his sleep. I began looking up things about sleep disorders, and somehow ended up on a website about astral projection. Sometimes, all it takes to make something happen is the belief that it's possible. After reading up about this subject, which I once thought to esoteric and unobtainable for an average joe like myself, I discovered that this frightening state is actually an excellent opportunity to induce an out-of-body experience... Literall an hour or so after I had finished reading, I went to bed, and woke up, paralyzed and frightened. But this time I figured out how to simply relax myself and go with it, and I tried to use my body awareness to feel myself rising up out of my bed. Within a few seconds, it happened; I floated upwards, look back at my sleeping body, and then decided to wake back up so I would have a good chance of remembering what had just happened. It felt so naturall, as if I always knew I had the ability, but I had somehow forgotten it. Robert Bruce and Jane Roberts both have some excellent books about astral projection and dream states, and I tend to accept the view of Jane Roberts' channeled SETH entity, that there are countless other dimensions and planes of existence moving through ours and coinciding with ours, almost as if our world was transparent and permeable...But our ego's senses are physically attuned to percieve in a limited specific fashion. During dreams and out-of-body states, we sort of "decompress" ourselves from that limiting state, and our thoughts and intentions manifest much more rapidly, as we are less bound by the constraints of time and the ego's normal patterns of reality creation. Seth even goes into great detail about the "electric reality" of dreams, how our thoughts are manifest and concretized by "mental enzymes" and "consciousness units," and mentions that science actually could find some way to obtain objective measurements of these facts, if they would simply start asking the right questions. Even though channeling is often viewed with a lot of skepticism, Jane Roberts' books are a pretty handy source of metaphysical information that anyone curious about subjective reality should take a look at.
Fear causes the paralysis. When I finally stopped being afraid I just floated out of my body. This was nothing new. My first OBE I'd sat up out of my body to find a funnel cloud at the foot of my bed. I grinned further than a human face can contort because I knew it couldn't hurt me for some reason. The coolest SP I had was when it felt like a flock of birds flew an inch over me. The only thing that tried sitting on me was the ghost at my friends house. I instinctively wadded it up into a ball and threw it across the room. I'd been having OBE for twenty years by then. It didn't even phase me.

this happened to me once thank God. i generally don't believe in the supernatural and still don't, but if i've ever experienced something that i would've sworn was, it was sleep paralysis.
i was trying to fall asleep when i see a black mist shaped like a blob floating in the air coming towards me where i was laid out on my back trying to sleep. it moved pretty slow. i was watching it completely freaked out in terror basically but i couldn't move. it got right next to my bed hovering for what seemed like minutes. it got to the point it felt so long that i got less terrified and resigned to what was going to happen was going to happen, since i was basically paralyzed.
thing is i know it wasn't a dream. i pinched myself, didn't sleep the rest of that night, went to work the next morning relieved to get out of that house, barely slept the following night, etc. it completely wierded me out. never experienced anything close to it. then i read some post on a forum referring to sleep paralysis, look up wikipedia on it, and someone else describes almost the same exact thing i experienced. i couldn't believe it. the term "sleep paralysis" just doesn't do what i experienced justice. the only redeeming part of it is its only happened once to me, and that was a long time ago. if it happened often i'd probably be more convinced of the supernatural, right now i think of it like a fluke :confusedshrug:

Black mist, eh? Notice the "black funnel" or "black cloud" in the post I wrote right before yours.
It's amazing how many similarities there are in these very distinctive events. I know though without a shadow of a doubt that this is demonic manipulation of some kind. I'm glad that you have only suffered it once. I've had it 6 times in the last three-four months.

i am going to continue posting personal accounts. they are eye-opening.
This is fascinating as I had this same problem since the age of 4 until age 39, and then when I spent 3 weeks in the Amazon jungle with a shaman drinking ayahuasca a few times, and having the pleasure of personal attention and daily dream analysis from Dona Cotrina, I was cured - it never came back. I had had visitations from a being that I could not see but could feel - it would attempt to suffocate me, and I would be trying to scream or wake myself up - to no avail. When I did eventually awake, the whole bed would be moving. The shaman said it was a malevolant spirit and that my guides were summoned during the ayahuasca ritual. In a final stand-off, when the guide was standing at my head, while the creature was on my left, the guide put her finger on the sticky ayahuasca cross that had been drawn on my forehead by the shaman earlier that night in the final ceremony, and moved it up to the top of my skull, in line with the pineal gland, in an act of protection. It has never come back since. When I woke up there was no sign of the mark on my forehead and nor had it stained the pillow. My fellow-traveller and translator had battled to wash the sticky cross off her forehead in the morning!?
a very long time ago, 1965 to be exact (yeah, I'm THAT old.) I was pregnant with my first child and I had laid down for a nap during the afternoon.
I opened my eyes and could see but I couldn't move. I felt a presence, and just as in the words of the author my mind was screaming "Threat, threat!". I actually felt someone touching me, but couldn't move at all. I closed my eyes tight and didn't open them again. I was absolutely terrified!
Then for some reason, a feeling of peace came over me and I could swear in my mind someone told me all would be fine. In my naivete I thought perhaps it was my unborn child, sending me thoughts of love and care...silly, I know, but I fell back asleep easily without a care in the world.
It wasn't until just a few years ago that I learned what that experience was, and it was the only time it occured.
The first time I experienced SP I was 8 and it scared me terribly. Years past, and I never experienced SP until about 4 years ago. I am currently 21 and for the past year and a half I have been experiencing this vibrational state/ frequency on the regular about once every week or two. I rarely use Marijuana and drink occasionally. This regular occurrence coincided with my first memorable flight in my dreams as well, which is a whole other story. Anyways, from what I have read thus far and to my understanding, SP occurs during your REM cycle, which normally occurs in the middle of your sleep cycle right? When I experience SP it occurs when I am first falling asleep. I also take naps sometimes and usually always end up dreaming and remembering it as well. I will start to fall asleep and be conscious to the fact that I am letting my thoughts scatter, and then I feel an increased vibration in the center of my brain, where I'm assuming my pineal gland is located. The sensation then overcomes my body and I am able to look around, and usually there are different presences, mostly dark figures. I have read a little about asking guides to displace these figures, and It has seemed to help. Also I am interested in astral projection, and when I have brought up the topic to some people, they have told me to be careful as I can possibly break away from the string of my projection and my physical body? Along with this concern about experimenting with AP I was wondering if: 1. It is normal to experience SP so frequently 2. Why do I have it when I am first falling asleep 3.Is 2 normal? any insight? 4. Suggestions on AP If anybody can shed some light in my direction it would be greatly appreciated. These experiences and my adventures in the dream state have become a phenomenal part of my life. I am trying to keep track of my experiences as well in hopes of benefiting whoever I can in whatever obscure manner through these experiences. For now I would like to get these questions taken of then I would love to discuss personal encounters of presences ect.... Namaste Crutches
I find it particularly interesting that many of the commenters report having SP and HH in their younger years, most notably their 20's. Wonder why.... I am currently 20 years old and I have experienced this multiple times a week for a few years now. Its gotten to the point where I am afraid to try to fall asleep because I know that I will start seeing things that frighten me. Often I leave the tv on low volume all night, I find it helps... Something about the silence makes it more likely for SP & HH to occur for me. I had been finding it difficult to explain to my mother and best friend why I had sleep problems... why I stayed awake much longer than most, why the process of descending into slumber was so hard for me. It gives me comfort to know that there are many others that experience this, and that there is a way to make it stop.
Wow. I can't thank you enough for this article. I have never really found anything that made such sense of what I have been going through my entire life. I started experiencing SP as a child in middle school. My experiences went on into high school and regular 'characters' began to develop. The majority of these dreams were horrifying, and certainy cast a dark cloud over my adolesence. As I moved into my early twenties, the dreams evolved into more of an iteractive dream session as I found myself following my visitor through the house in a trance-like state where I would recieve pieces of information about history, the future or other apparitions that lived in my house. It was hard for me to balance my 'real life' and my 'dream life', but I did to the best of my ability and without commiting myself to a mental institution. My search for understanding led me to an American shaman woman. She helped me learn to control my sense of vulnerability and over the span of our year together, she brought up the idea of participating in Ayahuasca ceremonies for a deeper understanding. I found myself in Peru drinking Ayahuasca and discovered that I, myself, might study under a curandero. This story goes on and on, but my point is that I very much appreciate this article and the light it sheds on a fairly common dream experience. My entire young adult life was a silent battle for my sanity, if only I had this article ten years ago, a lot of worrying would have been subsided. Thanks again!
wtf? again.. another reference to a shaman and a drink called ayahuasca
I've had many sleep issues for as long as I can remember, sleep paralysis being chief among them. But I've never seen it as something scary, and my experiences lack the whole thing-sitting-on-chest bit. Generally when I have an episode of SP, which happens fairly frequently, I just "wake up" and can't move, and I will see, hear or feer the presence of a particular woman. It is always the same one. After a minute or two with her, I wake up for real, and everything is fine. Even when I was a child experiencing this, I was never really scared of it and saw it more as an interesting event. But the woman I see has a pagan-mother-goddess thing about her, and I've always wondered if she is just a manifestation from my subconscious or something outside of myself trying to send me a message through the visits
When I was in college, I was taking a nap early evening and met the Intruder. I definetely didn't think that this was normal. However I was napping and I could sense a being standing next to my futon. He proceded to get on me and stradle my chest. While he was on me he put his four fingers on my eye sockets and pushed with more and more pressure. The harder he pushed, the harder I feel asleep, yet still being awake. The last thing I recalled after he got off of me was asking the age old question, "What's the meaning of life?" The being began to tear up and said, "I am glad you asked that" then I woke up..This was about 8 years ago and I can still remember it like it was yesterday. I was freaked out when I woke up, but wasn't all that scared while it was going on. Just thought I would share.
Cheers, Jimmy
happened to me 3 or 4 times in my lifetime. pretty nuts. Only lasted about 4 or 5 seconds though. Still a weird feeling when you open your eyes and know you're awake but can't move any part of your body for a couple of seconds.

Alright... these references to shamans have made me curious. For those who don't know, shamans are enlightened people who can communicate with the spirit realm. They function as mediators between spirits and people.
Regardless, that first account mentioned that a "Guardian" was summoned in order to protect the person suffering from sleep paralysis from a malevolent spirit that threatened her in her sleep.
Now if you try to analyze this is another context, you could think of a guardian as an angel and a malevolent spirit as a demon. I think a lot of Biblical entities have come to be known by many different names on Earth (which is natural, given that populations tend to be isolated and that there are language barriers). For example, customs and practices aside, the Islamic "Allah" and Christian "God" seem very similar.
This is all very interesting. But the most amazing part has to be the similarities in all of these sleep paralysis accounts:
- laying on your back (it can't be any other orientation. that supports the Turkish theory of the demon confusing a sleeping person with a dead person in a coffin)
- dark, gloomy presence
- dark cloud or mist (a few some accounts)
- SUFFOCATION (the medical definition doesn't account for this. I understand someone waking up while there muscular ability is still inhibited, but why do you feel as though something is keeping you from breathing?)

I"m not an expert on this subject, but when we go to sleep, the body enters a REM state and in essence, paralyzes us I guess to protect the body from doing harm to itself. I guess there are situations where you wake up, but your body is still in that state. hence, you experience paralysis. You're kind of still in a half asleep/half awake state, I suppose.
I guess its a strange experience and scary, but perfectly normal. Obviously, nothing supernatural. Maybe more people are prone to it than others.

I used to have it all the time. Always had the feeling of something evil in the room with me. I have seen the black mist once and have had the feeling that something was trying to choke me. Absolutely the worst feeling I've ever had except maybe getting hit in the nuts:lol. Hasn't happened in a few years, hope it never happens again.

You should probably read the entire thread. There are more symptoms than just temporary paralysis. And no, it's not obviously anything. We know what happens but we don't know what triggers it. I guess that varies depending on what you believe, but if you happen to believe in the supernatural, this has to be conclusive evidence.

Very interesting. Were your eyes open? Did you notice any figures around you? It's very possible that your version is more commonplace than the darker one I've experienced. The darker one probably scares people into searching the Internet and looking for help.

My eyes were closed and I didn't notice anything, I just couldn't move for like 5 seconds, then I forced myself to move and was able to.

Oh my Ghost!
JUst a week ago man. Did a lot of deadlifts, a lot of studying, a lotta driving, alotta talking. Was exhausted out of my f*ckin mind. So it was round about 3 AM and I'm sleeping on the floor on my back, instead of my bed, and just taking deep breaths to instigate delta waves, which induce relaxation. My arms are to my side just chillin and BAM, I'm stiller than usual. Stillll, still. Stiller. Stillest. Stare right in front of me and see a dark thing slowly crawl up my torso in a fluent fashion. Last I recall my blanket was just covering my ankles since its still September. My window is behind me, and usually there are shadows of cars from the street that pass by.. but this gloom was somethin gelse. IT HAD TO BE FROM a movement from my blanket, but I DIDN"T move the f*ckin oversized handkerchief. It was a goddamn rustling shadow, and I felt theze chills across my chest. like 15 degrees colder or something, vulnerable, incapable of movement. I hadn't felt fear in a long azz time, but thank u thread for explaining the previously unexplainable.

:facepalm
Yes, I believe demons are either instigating this paralysis, or that this paralysis makes us more susceptible to their manipulations. You could simply disregard this as hallucinations, but why are some of the hallucinations so eerily similar? And medical definitions of sleep paralysis don't even attempt to explain the suffocating feeling, as though someone is smothering that person in their locked-in state.
Plz, don't patronize me. If you haven't experienced this yourself, you have no clue what you are talking about. Even people who don't believe in the supernatural think that this event might be somehow related to it.

I'm patronizing you because I don't believe demons actually exist. Really?
I just believe the experience is probably very powerful and very frightening, and real, but its still just the mind and body. Not a supernatural force.
Put it this way, if you had to bet your life whether it was your mind and body playing tricks on you, or that it was actually a demon, what would you bet?
Exactly.

Very presumptuous of you to respond before I could even answer.
I don't want to delve too far into the details of my life, but a month ago I had a prophet visit my church for a revival. This guy was seriously the most pious person I have ever met---closer to God than any pastor or priest in my life. This guy literally spoke to God. His stories were unbelievable.
He was asked to preach at a service, and at the end he had people come forward for healing, in which he would place his hand on our heads and prophesy about us. I was at the very end of the line and was kinda hesitant to ask for prayer. I came last minute and as soon as he put his hand on me, he sort of gasped. He was incredulous. He told me that I was destined for great things in God's kingdom (which by the way I have been told by every prophet who has ever laid hands on me. not surprising since i'm somewhat bright and have high ambitions.) Essentially, he said Satan targets those who are the greatest threat to his kingdom. This guy specifically stated that I was being "manipulated by demons in by dreams." I kid you not. I had never EVER mentioned to anyone what happened to me in my dreams because at that point, it had been fairly new and I hadn't understood quite what was occurring other than feeling like I was being malicioiusly strangled. His prophesizing helped me to put the puzzle pieces together.
So yes, I would lay my life down right now that I am being terrorized by demons in my sleep. Why live if everything I believe in is false? What purpose would I have in life if not for that which is given unto me by God?
Sermon over. Take from that what you wish.

new site:
I have had sleep paralyisis at least once per month for the last 8 years. I am 29 as of this writing. I just had the experience about 1 hour ago and thus has caused me to do reasearch about it on the net. I noticed that many Dr.'s contribute this to anxiety, stress and other factors. My question is ... why is there always an evil presence in that concious yet body is still asleep phase? Today I heard a loud static sound, and opened my eyes to a spider crawling all over my arm. When I prayed to God, or said His name (Jehovah) the spider would start to disappear. I finally went thru my mental prayer when I awoke. This leads me to believe that it is more of a spiritual occurence, because I never have positive images while in this paralized state. I know there are many things in which our ancestors thought it was demonic rather than scientific, only to find there was a scientific explanation. However, I think this is different and cannot be simply written off as "scientific". There is not enough proof to show that it is scientific.
About a month ago I had another episode of sleep paralysis and I saw a small presence in the room with me. It was dark, and I could not see it's face (I am getting chills typing about it right now). My question is, why is there always an evil presence not only associated with my episodes, but so many others I have read about? ... Abel, 24 August 2006
[quote]so, this happened to me almost 5 years ago. my story is a scary one that, to me, proves that it is more then just a mental thing.
i was dating a girl that i thought was nice. it happened one night after talking to her about God. she told me she was a catholic when she was a Kid, but could not possible believe in it anymore since the world is so bad. She went on to explain that when she was a kid, she and her friend use to use Ouija board's.
She then told me that one night, the Ouija board went nuts, and a lot of really creepy stuff happened. She said she thought she was dreaming, and she said that things in the room were floating, but her friend remembered the same thing also. i forget what else happened, but basically some spooky stuff. They said that it was a different "spirit" then what they normally would talk to.
She then said about 3 months later, her friend never acted the same. she was always trying to find men on the internet to live with (3 times her age) (she was like 13 - 14) and she would try to run away.. she never acted the same, and was more violent and aggressive. my GF at the time tried to stop her a few times, even called the police on her. later, they stopped talking.
After she told me all that, and we shared some stories, I went to bed that night, to experience Sleep Paralysis. During that time, i could not move, and barley breath. Your body feels like it is tingling and sometimes feels like you are falling backwards. During that time, I hearing many things, and it def felt like someone was lying in bed next to me, but i could not turn over to see. i also heard loud barking (from a large dog) and basically, it scared the crap out of me. i finally kept trying to move, only to somehow pull out of it, and was able to move.. i got up, and nothing was there.
i thought "wow, that was one MESSED UP DREAM" I hope I never get that dream again, but when i started to go back to sleep, I started to feel my body become tingly again. I quick moved to stay out of it. i thought it was just my body falling asleep, but I was really just telling myself something to feel better. i couldn't sleep that night, every time I would try, I would start to "fall backwards" and my body would tingle. i did happen to get a little sleep again, only to have it happen again. paralysis from head to toe, and all i could see was my wall(i was on my side) then my arm started to shake like crazy, and move around and flop around like someone was pulling it and shaking it. Then I started to hear laughing and i could not stop it or anything, its hard to explain. i tried to pull out of it, but its defiantly not the same as a dream, you have to move your body to get out of it, and sometimes you can

I hate it. It happened to me a few nights ago. You're asleep and you're dreaming, but you don't know about what, and you try your hardest to open your eyes and wake up, but you can't. And you can feel yourself breathing hard. I hate it because after I wake up I don't want to go back to sleep in fear of it happening again.
I notice I only ever experience it if I lay on my back with my face up. I've never had it happen sleeping on my side or stomach. It's happened to me about 10 items in my life probably.

This is a really weird thread to read. The stories your posting from the other site and the posts from others in these thread.. eerily similar.
I had this happen to me about a month or two ago, but I had no idea what it was or what it was called, and just chalked it up to nothing.
I don't really remember much, but I remember waking up on my back (and I almost always fall asleep on my side or stomach) and I felt like I was strapped down to my bed from head to toe. I opened my eyes, and though I didn't see a black "blob" or anything like that, the room was eerily dark. Come to think of it, might have been the "mist" people have talked about. I really have no idea.
It lasted probably about 10-15 seconds, I was scared but never really felt like I was in danger. I almost gave up on trying to sit up, but decided to give one last push with everything I had and I was able to roll to my side.
I really don't think it has anything to do with demons though.

For as long as I can remember I have have strange waking dreams. Started out as a large shadow man watching me at night, a small weird man sitting on the end of my bed watching me to now,30 plus years later, ghosts, objects, humming, small humanoids and large spiders. My dr thinks I have a chemical imbalance. My hubby has strange waking dreams and ``attacks`` at night too. His didn`t start untill we moved into an old apartment 12 years ago. We moved about 3 imes since but we feel like something is following us. My kids have strange occurances too,my daughter especially, she tells me she sees a tall dark shadow man watching her and buzzing. She has floated in the air a couple times over her bed and just like I used to do, astro projects herself. Quite often we see deceased family members and things move by themselves. Friends who come over think it`s we have ghosts but it`s fun when we are trying to sleep. All the scary stuff happens after 3 am but not later than 5 or 5:30 am
This too has happened to me for a few years now. Almost always during the day and up to three or four times in one day. I awake able to only move my eyes. I start to panic thinking its happening again! And it feels so real cause i can hear my neighbors or the tv. I finally manage to move my lips to shout and it seems like im the only one who can hear myself. I was never really able to move but this last one i managed to get up very slowly and it took all my might, only to look down and I seen myself laying there!! I too also feel like im being watched or im not alone. its so scary! During this whole ordeal i will think Im awake but ill be right back where i started unable to move. All i think is "wake up wake up"!!!! Well after i finally wake up and the panic has died down i feel like i just lifted weights and my whole body is tired, like i hit muscle failure or somthing! I jusy awoke from one of those dreams and i feel gross or maybe even violated and my arms are sore like a was doing pullups!
again... we have common symptoms such as "feeling violated" (Incubus/Sucubus) and astral projection.
I can tell you all something that you are not ready to hear. To make a long story short. I really shouldn't tell this store again because It's frightening to me and I relive it over again. I was about 7or8 years old, and my mom beat my sister as she always done the both of us. This time my sis was put in the room by herself. It was our room. I cleaned it and there was nothing in it not even a bed. My big sis was 13 @ the time, and nothing scared her. She wasn't afraid of anything. If I got put in there I would have cried my way out. My sis was in there all nite til about 4 am I heard her scream and the hear thumping noises and fighting. I woke my mom and i told her something is going on with my sister and my mom hear the noise and open the door and my sister come out shaking with her fist balled up and say something was on her back and she fought it and she opened her hand and there it was hair, straight cold black hair embedded in the palm of her hand. How can anyone explain this. This was in the 80's we didn't know what tracks was are about fake hair, but I got salt and poured it in her hand and it went away. My mom and brothers are witnesses to this true story. I think we should have had her blessed by a priest at that time. My sis died at age 21. She had a daughter. My great niece is 21 now.
I've read most of the stories here, and i have to say that i can relate to many of them. My story is similar-
I stated having these SP episodes since the end of last year ('09). I had never had them before but i had heard of them as the old wifes tales of an entity laying on your chest, but i just saw those as "stories". It started happening to me, i would see things in my bedroom. I was alone in my room, my husband would go to work early in the morning. I would see something sitting next to me, or hear and see the door open, or a dark shadow laying on my chest, or a dark shadow walking towards my bed from the door. Luckily not every time i would see something; sometimes i would just not be able to move or "wake up". i could hear and see my surroundings but just couldnt make myself to wake up.
Everytime i would get so frightened for i could not move a muscle or have a sound come out of my mouth. I looked it up on the internet, came across its definition and understood the whole REM brain thing. I dismissed it as "something that happens" but it continued happening every single day,, I even went to see a priest. I talked to a friend and she assured me that it's not something that happens just because. I became a bit more religious, and i have to say that that helped me quite a lot! God is good!,, it stopped for a couple months and it occured again about a week ago. I tried not to let it worry me, and it hadnt occured until early today! but this time i didnt see anything "evil", i just couldn't move at all!
I don't really know what to think of it anymore. this kinda worries me because when SP is happening, i feel like i won't be able to wake up, because i struggle so much to wake up and nothing.
I hope that this SP will stop occuring to everyone that it happens to.
Keep your faith in the lord

I remember waking up, but it felt like a dream at the same time. That's what spooked me first. Then I saw a black figure standing at the end of my bed, I tried to move, but I just couldn't. I tried to shout, but I couldn't. The black figure moved closer and closer to me. The feeling of helplessness was terrifying, I couldn't do anything. I tried not to panic and after maybe 15 or 20 seconds (the longest 15-20 seconds of my f*cking life), I snapped out of it.
I refused to go back to sleep after that.

I've had it a few times over the years. Not pleasant but overall not a terrible experience.
I think I had a bad dream and screamed myself awake, but still not fully awake. Hence the helpless feeling and not being able to move. Pretty creepy the first time, but not so bad after that.

I get sleep paralysis quite regularly, twice in one night a few times. I try not to sleep on my back to avoid it, but sometimes i must roll into that position in my sleep.
The general routine is; wake up, can't move, try to yell or scream but just a trickle gets out, one long raspy exhalation, try and shrug my shoulders for a while and eventually it gives and I can move. When I say I 'wake up' that's not quite correct, it's sort of between waking and sleeping, I always feels i could quite easily go back to sleep while paralysed but i never have.
Every time I've had it my eyes are open and I can't really say i've ever seen anything as clear as some of the descriptions in here. I often think I see a dark figure standing in the corner of my room, like at the end of Blair Witch, but it's always just a jacket hanging there or the shadows. The only time i've been so frightened that I couldn't go back to sleep was when i felt what I thought were tiny footsteps starting on my thighs and moving up to my chest. But even then I didn't have trouble breathing.
I'm pretty sure it's just a sleep disorder.

I used to get this rather regularly from taking vistaril for insomnia.
The most common thing that would happen to me is I'd hear somebody beating the shit out of my door, or making a lot of noise in the next room. I always assumed it was a person coming to murder me, but I suppose if I were less sane I may have gone straight to alien, demon, or something of the like.
It happened at least once a night but I never got used to it. I would lay there struggling against myself, my muscles feeling like cement blocks too heavy for my bones to move. Always came with a strange tingling in the front of my brain, like a painless brain freeze. The harder I attempted to snap out of it the more prominent the tingling sensation was. It never lasted more than a few minutes and it was initially worth the tradeoff of being able to sleep once again, but eventually I got tired of it and quit the medication. Haven't experienced it since.

It happens to my friend. A lot of people say it's scary. I sometimes make twitches when I'm resting, like a signal went to my lef to kick the wall. I feel like I'm falling and wake up before I'm fully asleep. My brother talks in his sleep nearly every single night.

Yeah, I've experienced that too. Where you feel like you are falling down, and then you basically wake up. I've also waken up with charlie horse in my calf, it always scream in pain, but then I just fall back to sleep. lol

All the times this has occurred I see a Black face in front of me, laughing demoniacally. Really the only way too not let it freak you out is just keep your eyes closed, now matter how curious you happen to get at that time. It also helps if you sleep sideways or face down..

I've been reading about it happening to people laying on their sides, albeit rarely. There is no defense against this besides prayer. I begged God to send His angels to protect me last night. I played worship music from my iPod with "Jesus" in its lyrics frequently. I will do this every night and post if anything demonically-induced happens.

Sleep paralysis doesn't have to be accompanied by visions. Those are more commonly referred to as 'night terrors.' Sleep paralysis is caused by a hormone that is secreted into your system that paralyzes your body in order to prevent injury from acting out your dream in real life. I've always been able to control my dreams, and when I was younger, i could usually wake myself up if i was having a nightmare that was too much to handle. A few times, i'd wake up (i'm positive i was awake, there are tests you can do to determine whether or not you're dreaming) and not be able to keep my eyes open for longer than a few seconds, but what made it weird was that I wouldn't be able to move at all. Nothing to do in that situation but to fall back asleep and go back to the nightmare.

Hi there my name is kimberly and im writing to you all to help find out what happened to my mother a few nights ago, she woke up in the middle of the night frozen and she couldnt move her torso she could move her head and eyes alright, she had a feeling someone was in the room with her so she finally managed to turn and look , she said it was her dead mother and she spoke to her,she was angry with my mum and wasnt the mother shed always remembered , my mum turned away from her trying to hide her face but my granny told her to turn round again that she wasnt going anywhere, in one way im thinking that what you are all experiencing is very similar, but the difference is she actually seen and spoke to someone she knew, im really confused and quite worried, a few nights after that she woke up with the same feeling that someone was in the room she was frozen and cold and couldnt move, but no1 was in the room this time, that was wedensday, nothing has happened since then, but we are both quite scared, we go to a medium quite often now because my father passed away last yr and its just the 2 of us now, so we phoned her up yesterday to get some advice and she said it was real it wasnt a illness but i dunno what to believe, should i make my mum go to the doctors on monday , and ask about sleep paralysis any feedback would be helpful because im getting a little scared even tho its not happening to me.
thank you Kimberly Brodie
if anyone could even email me on id be so grateful
I have had experiences like this for 8-9 years. My sister told me of these "demonic presences" she would often feel at night and wouldn't be able to move. As soon as she moved out of the house I started to experience them. I had recently become a Christian and had a dream. Long story short I was in a circle in a crowd I knew I shouldn't be with and felt a had on my leg, I tried to remove the hand and couldn't, I looked over and a very angry man said to me "what..I can't touch you anymore" I yelled "no, you can't!" I woke up and wasn't able to move and felt a sharp horrific pain in my groin. It lasted for less than a minute but it was terrifying experience. Since then I have the experience of not being able to move, feeling as though something or someone is holding me down. Sometimes I hear or see things. It will often happen several times in a night. The other night a demonic voice called my name. I have been convinced that these are evil spirits tormenting me. My husband says they are simply nightmares, but when they happen I feel 100% aware! I did some research on the internet and felt somewhat relieved that there was a "scientific" explanation for my experiences. However, now that I read so many similar experiences from you all I have to wonder about the similarities of our experiences and a common "evil presence". It doesn't make sense that having trouble shifting in and out of REM correctly would create a common demonic/evil experience.
I have been experiencing these episodes for the majority of my child hood. Mines was just as extreme as others, But in most cases worst. In my old house in new york 2 people past away in my room. A father and son, I didn't find out about this until after i starting dealing with these episodes. Once I woken to silence but my girlfriend was laying right next to me. At the end of my room i saw a body walking towards me, It stop right above me. as i tried to yell, nothing came out. I starting to moon louder and my girlfriend woke up and starting to shake me until my symptoms disappeared. Another time i was in the bed by myself falling to sleep and then it happened, I was paralyzed with a heavy weight on my back. I tried to fight and resist the feeling, then it felt like some one picked me up out of the bed and started swinging me around the room for about 30 sec. I literially heard the sheets moving forcefully, One of the most tramatizing experiences i've ever come across. one of my last episodes happened when I was an adult, i lived in these nice apartment that just so happen to be not so far away from a graveyard. when i went to sleep that night i awoke suddenly to find my self paralyzed. I felt like there was someone forcefully putting their arms into my back. As the fear in me reached its climax I heard the sound of breathing in and out in my ear. keep in mind i am a grown man from the bronx, and i have never experienced anything as horrific as those episodes in my life.
I've been experiencing these episodes off and all throughout my life but recently they have become more n more dramatic .First i would wake up because the energies n the room were thick , i couldnt speak or i couldnt remember prayers ive been saying for since i was a child, i would scream but no sound would come out my mouth, there has been so many time and episodes since moving to my apartment that i am n now , in the last two week , ive encountered it twice, once i saw it and i grabbed my bible i was holding on to it tightly and telling it to go away i saw fingers trying to pry my fingers from the book that one of the pages tore, when it came back night before last i grabbed my bible again and it went away, i'm sorry but i'm not convinced that this is some kind of sleep disorder, because there is a conscious reaction to the energy! there has to be some other answer we havent explored!

The way I see it if you grow up in a Religious family, the Top of the list inner fear one can have is Demons/Evil whether its real or not. Encountering sleep paralysis i believe just brings out one's biggest fear, partly because you cannot control your body/voice. There is ways to control the fear/terror. I guarantee it will not happen, if you don't panic, close your eyes, and think of something else, at the time you feel that your freezing up.
Next time try to think of something cool in your sense, or something you wish you can do, you will encounter the total opposite and will have a bomb ass lucid dream.
BTW being scared to sleep does not help at all. Matter of fact, one of the cause of sleep paralysis is believed to be from sleep deprivation, and changing your sleep patterns and from experience I can tell you thats true.

had my first sleep paralysis when I was 13 in my bedroom at my old house. I was dreaming at first, which I can't remember. I woke up hearing a young boy voice saying "hello nea nea". I tried to move but I only moved like 1mm, then returned the way I were, like I am tied up with rubber. I was laying on my right, then everything went white, then I felt like some one was a top of me and a voice repeated "hello nea nea". Again, everything went white, then I saw a person at my side with the back of his head facing me with a piece of long hair covered with blood on his head. Again a voice repeated. That piece of hair was moving, I was frightened. After I woke up, I could feel my heart beating. It was very weird.
The second time happened in the same place, but a month later. I woke up and I was floating with a old zombie look a like man in my face singing with weird words like "ba du awww" something like that. I could talk, telling it leave me alone, and close my eyes, it lasted like 30 secs or longer. I was very frightened.
The weirdest thing was a week after, I woke up in middle of the night and saw someone who is black with a white suit on and he disappeared. My mum has seen him as well, he woke my mum up by pushing her into the bed, then walked into my room and shouted "get out of jason's room" (she saw many ghost in her past) but I didn't hear her, she must have been asleep again when I woke up. I was scared but I felt I knew that he some kind of an angel.
After that, we moved to a different house, I was 15 at that time. It happened again, with something appearing at my door but I closed my eyes, so instead I felt someone at the top of me, making love, which it was very weird, I am male! After I woke up confused.
A week later again, but this time nothin happened, I only heard the ocean, I thought that I was dying so I said "I don't want to die yet, why now?". After that, I woke up.
Two days later, again, I was facing my blue wall at the left. I saw a face appearing and smiling at me. I didn't feel scared, just cheerful, relaxed. After 30 sec, I woke up feeling happy and never had another one again.
Was it an angel that have stopped demons from attacking me? was it a test for something, or did I made someone or something bored of attacking by closing my eyes? IS it just all in my head? But it can't be in my head since I saw someone at my old house. It's so weird!
If sleep paralysis happens to you, try to close your eyes and think of something like what to do today or something.
Yes, I have experiences with demons
I have been losing a battle with addictions. As the years progress (in my addiction) Demons are getting closer... I believe (bc, I'm Christian) that when I use drugs, it opens up the door to demonic attacks... When I use drugs, I can sense the demons around me, taunting me, scaring me... I know they are there (im not crazy...lol) I haven't seen them (I Pray to God I Never Do).
One time, I was using [drugs] with a guy, and I felt like there was a demon (or person) behind me, putting his arm around my shoulder. Well, eventually the guy I was using with freaked out and asked me to leave... As I was leaving he said "and take your friend with you"... I said, "I didn't come with anyone"... He then replied, "The guy who had his arm around you"... It freaked me out, but I am aware that Spritual warefare exsists, and when I use drugs I am under attack, and I open myself up to such things. I have many more experiences with Demons, I Pray that I will ba able to turn my life around. Hope you will Pray too.
Thanks:)

Fear is controlling you man. There are no demons. You are just rationalizing that out of fear. Fear produced that terror you felt and now it is fueling your obsession with demons because you feel if you have an explanation for what happened you'll be able to control the situation better. There are no demons, just fear and the thoughts being produced as a result of this emotion. This is the same for all your case studies (notice how the subjects said they've seen ghosts multiple times in their past). They are all stuck in that belief which is ludicrous. Anything you experience in a nightmare is the same as sleep paralysis. If you saw a demon in your dreams would you be freaked out? I wouldn't because dreams can be wierd and ****ed up and you dont have to let them affect you. Dont think about that shit.

You guys know the funny thing is that I read parts of this thread before going to bed last night. Low and behold, I experienced sleep paralysis probably 3 to 4 times this very night. It was terrifying as usual, but I did take advice of "as long as you don't sleep on your back it wouldn't happen". I then proceeded to sleep on my stomach and on my side for the rest of the night. Here's the thing, bro. I rarely have dreams. I have always been the type of person to pass out as soon as I hit the hay and then wake up unwillingly in the morning. Nothing happened in between. I was a hard sleeper, too. I slept through a fire alarm once.
Now tell me why the hell something is waking me up and then suffocating me while I can't move? Good thing I can't open my eyes because if I saw something I would probably jump off the deep end. These medical definitions don't account for the suffocating feeling one is forced to endure.

I think the suffocating feel is just pure panic. When you have no control over a situation you panic. I was stuck in an elevator for a while last week. I started to panic and it felt like the small elevator room was closing in on me. I felt like the oxygen in the room was running out. But it was all in my head. I was fine afterwards. I understand its frightening but dont read all those ghost stories man. They're only fueling your fear. The more you understand that this is just a normal physical process that happens to a lot of people the less scared you'll be and before long you'll forget about it.

Bingo! If he actually bothered to look at the medical definition, he would see that panic attacks are actually common with sleep paralysis. So are halluncinations and the appearances of "dream like figures/images", hence the reports of "shadow people" and other crap.
Airchibundo, no offense but you come across as being an incredibly naive kid. You realize all those so called "stories" you posted have no real credibility. Anybody can type up a bunch of random BS and post it on the internet. Doesn't mean it's true. I'm not saying these people aren't experiencing something, but it's stuff that has a rational explanation. There are no demons or anything, it's all in the mind. Nothing supernatural about it. The human mind is very complex.
A lot of people who are depressed, sad, feel hopeless, etc, find the need to create these "demons" as a means of coping with their situations. They feel it can't possibly be them, and these "demons" are a convenient way of taking the blame off themselves/getting people to feel sorry for them. In reality, there are no such thing and these people fail to realize that the first step to feeling better starts with them. Instead they'll run to the first wacko who assures them they can "release" these "demons". Which brings me to another point, Airchibundo, I was trying my damn hardest not to break into uncontrollable fits of laughter with your priest story. I'm not saying you made it up, just you got duped by a rather convincing guy. I'm gonna end here cause I really don't feel like getting into a debate with any right wing crazy religious nutjobs. I'll only end by saying I've seen too much and experienced too much in my life to know that there's no such thing as God. Not to mention my father was a Science teacher. I like to believe in what I can actually prove to be true, not fanatical stuff that has no real evidence.

I've found an infinite number of accounts. These attacks have happen to people throughout history. Check out the derivation of the common word, nightmare:
It comes from Old English maere 'goblin, incubus.' The word was nigt-mare in 1300, and it referred to an evil female spirit afflicting sleepers with a feeling of suffocation. By 1350, it was nytmare and in 1440 it was nyghte mare. Mare 'goblin' is a cognate with Middle Dutch mare, maer 'incubus,' Old High German mara, Middle High German mar, mare (dialectical modern German Mahr 'nightmlare'), and Old Icelandic mara 'incubus.' Mare comes from the Proto-Germanic word *maron.
On top of these accounts, we have actually stories from posters on this board. I figured if this was coming from one person, everyone would label that person psychotic. But this many?
It basically comes down to this: if you believe in God, the devil and the spiritual warfare between angels and demons, this is almost conclusive evidence. If you don't believe in the supernatural, you are obviously going to cast this idea away. Just because it has a medical definition and we have a loose understanding of what is occurring in the body doesn't mean that we know what triggers it.
Have you actually experienced this yourself? If you haven't, then you have a very detached view of this phenomena. You can't possibly understand the palpable evil entity or the inability to move or scream while something is visibly trying to attack you. I was awake and literally felt something applying a downward pressure on my chest. I felt my earphones crawl up my chest as if they were a noose and I was fixing to be strangled.
I don't want this to evolve into a religious debate because that is obviously the origin of most varied opinions.
Which brings me to another point, Airchibundo, I was trying my damn hardest not to break into uncontrollable fits of laughter with your priest story. I'm not saying you made it up, just you got duped by a rather convincing guy.
LMAO. Funny stuff my man. Good luck to you in the future.
btw check out my ouija board thread
I had them now and then when i was like 15,16, like once a month. Scared the crap out of me. Even when i could move, i could not talk for a few minutes, freaked me out. Then it stopped and never came back. It's scary. I think it's common, i kind of remember reading about it then.

"Well, one may ask "why should someone waking up in the middle of the night fell like they can not breathe to begin with?" If we are dealing with a failure to turn off the mechanisms of REM sleep, then we must take a look at breathing in REM. Characteristics of REM respiration include shallow rapid breathing, hypoxia, hypercapnia, and occlusion of airways (Douglas, 1994).13 Both tidal volume and breathing rate are quite variable during REM, and because of paralysis of the major anti-gravity muscles, thoracic contribution to breathing is lower during REM than during NREM sleep (Douglas, 1994). Moreover, because individuals are conscious during SP they may sometimes attempt to breathe deeply when tidal volume decreases, just as they attempt other voluntary movements. When they find their attempts to control breathing volume and rate are unsuccessful, they will feel a sense of resistance possibly interpreted as pressure, or a feeling of choking as the desired larger volume of air fails to enter the lungs. This is consistent with the finding that the pressure on the chest is positively associated with perceived breathing problems (Cheyne, Newby-Clarke, & Rueffer, 1998). In addition, increased airflow resistance because of hypotonia of the upper airway muscles and constriction of the airways would attenuate feelings of choking and suffocation. This could very easily lead to panic and strenuous efforts to overcome the paralysis; all this in the absence of a visible reason. As we search for a cause unseen, and find none (all the more scared because of it), we start to fabricate the malevolent agent - even if its [this is where we run into the muddling of cause and effect in the nervous system. Does a fear response cause us to breathe harder unsuccessfully, or does the person's sudden inability to not breathe as expected/desired trigger a fear response?]"

Here is a scientific documentary about "Sleep paralysis:
They talk about the "shadow man" that strangles people, that everyone sees and so on.

Matthew 13:25

My question to the sceptics, why is it the same shadow man? and old lady?
They describe her height and look exactly the same.

Exactly. If these were mere hallucinations, then they wouldn't be similar to each other. There might even be happy hallucinations. Instead, we've had several people see dark figures and shadow people without faces. Let's not forget "black clouds" and "black mists." Then there are people who have been able to do astral projection in their paralyzed state.

It's weird but I think the brain works in such a way that you dream about what you think about just before going to sleep. I guess that's why I saw something black move towards me when I awoke from sleep paralysis. It's because I was reading through this thread just before bed. You can bet I'm not doing that again.

Well, how do you know the brain isnt interpreting "dark figures, shadows, and black mists" when its merely going into panic mode?
Also a "suggestion" can literally make people believe that they're all seeing the same thing, or similar. How accurate are these claims, when people are experiencing something so traumatic as sleep paralysis?
If ONE person claimed to have saw a "shadow person" while in this debilitating state, then the next person will often believe the same, or similar..."a mist" might be seen THIS time around. And then THAT info gets passed around...and the next person is like "omg! I saw that too!"
Frankly, im just saying, one cannot assume the paranormal, before one has exausted the logical, and medical first.

I'm not the one to ask because my haven't been able to open my eyes when they occur. Go read Poodle's account. So much for a hallucination. What seems threatening about a black cloud, right? Then there are multiple accounts that I have posted that also mention a black cloud floating nearby, and even one that was witnessed from a person who had undergone astral projection and was looking back at his body. He said that there was a black cloud near his feet. That can't be a coincidence.
Old ladys and shadow figures.. I can understand. There is something creepy about old people.
Back to topic: we're not talking about a mist that completely envelops you because that could easily be confused for just general darkness. We're talking about a discreet gaseous entity.

It hasn't happened to me the last three nights in which I have prayed and covered my room in holy oil.
Found a few more stories:
Last night at 1:20 am in 27/4/2009 I was sleeping and dreaming of my classmate I was having fun in my dream, then suddenly I heard a sound outside my room I woke up, then I felt that someone is in my room walking next to my bed, suddenly I saw a shadow and I felt it, I felt the energy coming from it, it was really strong, i heard a breath of a dog next to my head it was clear, then the neighbors dog start to bark in a weird way, then I saw the hand of that shadow he put his hand around my neck and start shocking me, I couldn't move breath or even scream, I got really scared, I have never tried this kind of experience before in my life.
after he left me and went away I moved my hand and start breathing again it was really scary.
Why is it that he can't breathe as soon as The Stranger grabs his neck? Shouldn't paralysis affect him immediately after he wakes in his REM cycle?
once when i was really depressed about life, i had a wierd dream and wokr up. i felt like there was something in my room, i looked around and one of the corners of the room looked very dark. then something told me that if i accepted it everything that was bothering me would go away. i told it it get out of my effin room and i never saw it again. don't let them get you while your week, God is the only answer.
I really think that there might be a correlation between depression and these attacks. Mine began in a period that I felt immoderately depressed. No paralysis mentioned, so so much for "hallucinations."
When I was about 22 years old I had s horrible experiense .I was asleep and couldn't move I felt someone rubbing my legs but there was noone. I couldn't speak . So I prayed in my mind. Them I was able to move So I ran and jump on my sisters bed and woke her up to tell her what just happened . She thought I was crazy. We went back to sleep. A bit latter she woke up screaming and told me she saw a ghost next to us looking. She said it kind looked like the movie "exorsist" but it was a male. Till this day I still expirience these nightmare or attacks and they always touch me in a sexual way. I wish I could get rid Of them .
The more people that are aware of a dark entity, the more confirmation.
This is probably the last time I will bump this without something significant happening. I'm thinking everyone who has experienced this should bookmark the thread and document the instances when they occur again.

I get sleep paralysis every time I sleep during the day. When I sleep at night, I don't ever get them. I've been getting them since high school. It is freaky and scary, but I am "used to" it. Back then when I got it, I would panic doing everything possible to move. Since I'm used to it, I would still try to move my arms, but I don't have panic attacks anymore. It's still discomforting. I would at times hellucinate(spl), but it's never any demons or anything. I'll helluscinate about realistic paranoid stuff, like if I'm sleeping at work, I get sleep paralysis. During the sleep paralysis, I would here my boss's voice, vehicles, foot steps, I would freak out trying to get out of sleep paralysis because I don't want to get caught sleeping by my boss and get in trouble. I would finally wake up fully and look around and there's no one to be seen for miles.
I didn't click through every page in this thread so sorry if someone already explained what sleep paralysis is. Basically, you go through different cycles of sleep. At a point of time, your skeletal system shuts off and is motionless. If you wake up when your body is in that state, you are in sleep paralysis. You are conscious, can see your surroundings, you can think, but u can't talk or move. It's freaky because it's the feeling of vulnerability. There's nothing you can do about it until that part of your REM sleep wares out. It normally happens to people who have irregular sleep patterns, don't get enough sleep, have narcolepsy, and some others I don't know much about. Fortunately, it's not harmful.

Oh, I forgot, sleep paralysis does not make you suffocate. Sleep Paralysis effects your skeletal system. it's the panic attacks from freaking out. Since I'm used to sleep paralysis, I breathe perfectly. I'll try to move but I don't freak out.

I used to get it when I was younger. Mostly when I was resting after wrestling practice. You can actually trigger it yourself. Work yourself real hard(sports practice, a game, crazy session at the gym, long run, etc.). Then go home and lay down on your back somewhere(before you eat or shower, kind of gross I know). Completely relax yourself. Fight to stay awake, but don't do anything physical like cold water on your face or slap yourself etc., just try to keep your eyes open. As you go through through the cycles of dozing in and out, you might feel your body twitch or tingle. Acetylcholine is leaving your muscles(happens to everyone when they fall asleep), and you go into partial paralysis(happens to everyone when they fall asleep, so you don't act out your dreams). If you can wake your mind up when you're "dozing off" when enough acetylcholine has been removed from your muscles, you will be paralyzed but you will be awake(you can look around the room with your eyes but you're paralyzed). You guys should try it out.

You're right Dean, I'll write it here.
If you're having problems with sleep paralysis this is what you must do:
Spray some holy oil around your bed room. Also, take some salt and place it all over the doors and windows. Make sure there is no opening. Just a straight line of salt, so no one can get by.
THE BIGGEST THING is to draw a devil's trap under you bed, this is the ultimate way to make sure that the demon can not get on top of you and start attacking you, while you are asleep.

what noises did you hear? From what I remember researching long ago, common sounds are dogs barking and knocking on wood.
yeah, your spirit leaving your body is referred to as astral projection, and it is supposedly attainable through a lucid, dream state. I don't know how you did it the first time, but people have been able to replicate their projections and even do it consistently. It's risky, though. While you are having a good ole time flying through walls, your body is left vulnerable to "wandering" spirits.

this happened to me once thank God. i generally don't believe in the supernatural and still don't, but if i've ever experienced something that i would've sworn was, it was sleep paralysis.
i was trying to fall asleep when i see a black mist shaped like a blob floating in the air coming towards me where i was laid out on my back trying to sleep. it moved pretty slow. i was watching it completely freaked out in terror basically but i couldn't move. it got right next to my bed hovering for what seemed like minutes. it got to the point it felt so long that i got less terrified and resigned to what was going to happen was going to happen, since i was basically paralyzed.
thing is i know it wasn't a dream. i pinched myself, didn't sleep the rest of that night, went to work the next morning relieved to get out of that house, barely slept the following night, etc. it completely wierded me out. never experienced anything close to it. then i read some post on a forum referring to sleep paralysis, look up wikipedia on it, and someone else describes almost the same exact thing i experienced. i couldn't believe it. the term "sleep paralysis" just doesn't do what i experienced justice. the only redeeming part of it is its only happened once to me, and that was a long time ago. if it happened often i'd probably be more convinced of the supernatural, right now i think of it like a fluke :confusedshrug:
this happend to me.. when he saw that i noticed he moved quickly to the corner of the ceiling, he wasn't trying to move so I won't notice but it was too obvious. I heard that if u curse at them they go away. I tried it and i just pissed it off, it rushed me so fast and got about an inch away from my face. I just started praying and it went away. every time this happens to me i relax begin to pray and i go back to sleep

It's usually brought on by stress and fatigue. When I lost my buisness last year I had major sleep problems. I had a recurring dream that people where watching me while I sleep and then they would put there hands over my face and try to suffocate me. Horrible experience.

I've read a lot that sleeping on your back increases your chance of it happening, though.
It's happened to me more times than I can count. Aside from other sleeping disorders and such, it's mostly caused from sleep deprivation and high anxiety.
It would happen to me every now and then back before I went off to college, and I wouldn't hallucinate or anything like that. But, this year when it's happened it's just been downright terrifying. The first couple of times I would just hear voices until I snapped out of it. After that, there was a time where it seemed like it lasted FOREVER and I ended up feeling like I was being violently shaken, then finally I snapped out of it.
The last time it happened to me was the worst. I lapsed in and out of the paralysis a few times, and two of the times I saw two pretty clear images followed by a really bright flash and then I woke up. The first time it was a decaying plant in shadows sitting in some room. The second time it was a girl resembling the girl from the Grudge standing at the foot of the stairs in my friend's basement. I have no idea what those two images could possibly mean, but it was pretty unsettling.

Sleeping on your back definitely increases the chances of it happening, at times I would sleep on my back and the sleep paralysis was about to come but I would snap out of it before it took me over, then I would turn to sleep on my side and it wouldn't happen, sleeping on your side definitely helps.
Actually the most recent times it has happened I have quite enjoyed the paralysis, because I knew what was happening and that it is nothing to worry about. But the first times were extremely scary.
It has happened to me I guess around 10 times during the last 2 years. First time this happened was almost 2 years ago, and the last time was a few months ago.
I guess I have been lucky to not see any creepy visions while having sleep paralysis, that would probably freak me out.
But there always is this weird feeling that there is an evil presence in the room...
Also I often take naps during the daytime but it has never happened to me during my daytime naps, only at night.

Same, which is why I was wondering if this had something to do with sleeping on the back. If I'm ever in a situation where I wake up, am still tired but need to be out of bed reasonably soon I'll lay on my back and it literally prevents me from going back to sleep.

I had no idea was sleep paralysis was until I saw you guys talking about it here months and months ago. Never had it and never even knew about it before then. Then a month or so later after that, I experienced it when I woke up.
I don't think it freaked me out or anything because I knew immediately what it was exactly. The first thought that went through my mind was, "Hey, this is that thing we were talking about on ISH." Literally, thats what crossed my mind that exact second. But I wasn't laying on my back like everyone else when this happened, I was sleeping frontwards with my back facing the ceiling.
I honestly didn't freak out or anything. I didn't feel like I was getting rapped by a demon or see any crazy hallucinations or see my room pitched in dark like everyone is describing here. All I saw was my pillow and the wall on the other side of the room, and the morning sun coming through my window. Couldn't move, couldn't talk, was just laying there. Like I said, I knew it was that sleep paralysis thing on ISH, and after a few seconds, I could move again. It was weird, but it sounds scary as hell what you guys are describing. Seeing people in your room? Feeling like someone is sitting on you? People laughing in your face? Pitch darkness and horror. Now that would truly freak me out. Happy mine was just a minor freeze phase.
