honestly, my favorite is sashimi, particularly great tuna.
I also like unagi and anago (eel) a lot. The roe dishes are great as well. There are very few sushi rolls I have tried and not liked.
As vapid said, uni is so rich and delicate.
But my favorite raw fish is actually a polynesian dish called poke

definitely love Negihama, spicy tuna rolls, and salmon... but I like it all really, don't know every kind, but have been eating since childhood and there's not much sushi that I dislike... as long as it's not cluttered and overdone with cream cheese (prefer more traditional kind of stuff), I'm a fan... Love a variety of tempura for sure, mushrooms, sweet potato, asparagus, plantain, shrimp, etc.

yeah there is a place in town here where half their rolls have either spicy mayo (gross, but I hate most mayos) or creamcheese in them. now, they try and have lots of vegetarian "sushi" to appeal to those types, but still. give me some fish, some seaweed, some rice and seasoning and maybe some thin sticks of veggies

I absolutely love sushi dishes. My dad went to Japan for university, and every time we go to a Japanese restaurant he just speaks in Japanese to (usually) the manager and gets the best foods. Some of my favourite includes salmon sashimi but grilled on one side, so you get a raw and grilled side, and usually topped off with ginger and tiny bit of onion. Practically melts in your mouth once you bit it. Oh and...

you're right the eel has to be cooked it's a little "chewy" if you try and eat it raw and it's real fishy tasting too...
but i love the cooked eel..
can't do the sea urchin way to rich...
i had a guy who worked for me a couple years ago who was or had been a sushi chef when he was going through school in japan.. we went deep sea fishing for albacore, man that was great... sato was carving the fish up as they came on board... he'd go under the gill plate and pull out these little round chunks that looked like a medium sized scallop, he called it the cheeks... literally melted in your mouth.. he even brought soy suace...lol

I was in a sushi joint while I stayed in Vancouver called Aoki(BTW, Vancouver has a million joints and they are all good). There was a roll called Pink Godzilla.
It was tempura chicken and salmon rolled up with rice and seaweed, deepfried in tempura batter, then topped with a strawberry and a kiwi slice, then drizzled in japanese hot sauce and japanese mayo

I would say raw fish is kind of an acquired taste. Most people do not like it their first time trying, or its just whatevers to them. But the more you eat, the better it gets, and soon most people really end up loving it. Its one of the most healthiest ways to eat (not counting the asian fusion types of rolls where its deep fried, more so the raw fish), and it tastes very fresh. I would say a lot of american fried foods are way more disgusting to eat compared to sushi

its only an acquired taste because of our enculturated food preferences. I bet if you gave most 1 year olds a piece of toro sashimi they would love it. Same think with pate's and liverwursts. Its only once you've learned its weird or odd or gross that you start to think that way.

I've had the pleasure of dining at Nobu, one of the most famous Japanese restaurants in NYC.

Despite the fact that vapid is taking his usual condescending tone with us mere mortals, he's got somewhat of a point. It has been my experience when travelling that the best sushi places usually don't attract a whole lot of WASPs. If I'm in another city and have a craving for sushi I'll usually ask for a few recommendations and then go there and see how many Asians are in the place. If there are virtually no non-Asians there I'll go in and ask that the chef prepare a sushi/sashimi combo of his choice. It hasn't failed me yet.

How old is she? When I was like a toddler, my mom wouldn't feed me sashimi/sushi cause of the potential bacteria living in raw fish.

ps. what do you guys think of Roe. its disgustingly salty and repulsive, yet I find it delicious haha
for those of you who've never had it, Clam and Uni (sea urchin) are also delicious. I wouldn't recommend it for first time sushi triers by the way. regular sushi fish such as yellowtail and tuna are much more sushi noob-friendly, though uni does have a butter-like texture.

I dont know. My wife was hooked on Uni the first time she tried it (before she had always been cautious of it). Just so rich
as for Roe, I like it, but I cant eat a ton. THis one place in Houston served it in a hollowed out cucumber (like seriously, half a cuc full of roe, it was a lot) and it was too much for me. plus I hear that once it bursts in your mouth, you couldnt tell the difference between its salty flavor and semen. boozehound - I couldn't imagine that much roe. its good in small quanitities but the saltiness of it is certainly overwhelming.
rufus - i think the whole thing about kids and sushi is that despite how fresh it is, there's always the chance that there will inherently be bacteria solely out of the fact that it isn't cooked.

this is how i love my salmon. raw, but seared a little.
but i don't eat the rice. sushi rice is crap, nutritionally. my go-to japanese meal is a ginger salad with lightly seared salmon on top... maybe a seaweed salad on the side. some steamed edamame or more sashimi if i'm still hungry.
