This might not be news for everyone, but I found this really disgusting. I always knew that hot dogs and fast food were gross, but I didn't think it was this bad.

Say hello to mechanically separated chicken. It’s what all fast-food
chicken is made from—things like chicken nuggets and patties. Also, the
processed frozen chicken in the stores is made from it.Basically, the
entire chicken is smashed and pressed through a sieve—bones, eyes, guts,
and all. it comes out looking like this. There’s more: because it’s
crawling with bacteria, it will be washed with ammonia, soaked in it,
actually. Then, because it tastes gross, it will be be flavored
artificially. Then, because it is weirdly pink, it will be dyed with
artificial color. But, hey, at least it tastes good, right?

how do people not know this? Look at what you are eating at a FF place and ask yourself what part of the bird it could be. I would highly recommend you check out Food Inc. (available streaming on netflix) for a pretty open and honest overview of our food system and how it has failed us as a society (both primary producers as well as consumers, not to mention the impact on the rural economy in the US over the last century) while being a highly profitable enterprise.

We had to watch that on campus, one day. and then a guy wrote his speech in my speech class over it, once I finally got past all the gross shit I learned,(I already knew some of it but chose to ignore it). I saw it in September and I didn't have fast food again till...June I believe.

also your FF burger is more than likely close to half soy protien. and pretty much all soy, wheat and corn in our diet in the US is GMO, since there are no labeling requirements and they comprise something like 90% of all crops grown now (just in the last decade or so has this happened).
Now, Im not totally against GMO, but I do argue that we do not know what the long term impact will be.
People like to compare it with selective breeding (as genetic engineering) but that is clearly a false flag argument. Selective breeding works with the variation available in an existing genome. GE takes genes from entirely different evolutionary lineages (from fish to toms for example). And, recall that much of DNA is "junk" dna, meaning it doesnt encode for a specific protein. but we are discovering that this "junk" has a bigger and more complicated role that we fully understand. So, what are the long-term impacts? We dont know and we are using ourselves as guinea pigs. I think its unethical that the govt doesnt require labeling for GMO. But, of course, they wont, because the corporate lobbyists who revolving door into our positions of food system authority know that people will choose the non-gmo if given the choice.
thats right, dig our heads in the sand and dont worry about the most fundamental activity we engage in as a society. best not to think about it.

you could add enough artificial flavoring and coloring to anything to call it food. :milton (couldn't find a 'sick' smilie, but i've never used this before)
I don't know why they dye it and process it further, that looks delicious! Why not sell it like that?
Go to KFC and get a nice bowl of chicken:

yes, basically they use force (centrifugal I think) to push the "meat" (soft tissue) through a screen and leave behind the bones.
THis is then washed in ammonia, etc and pressed into a molding machine

frankly, this issue doesnt really concern me that much compared to the general confined feeding ways we raise our chickens and other animals in our current food system. but its still pretty gross to look at.

This sadly doesn't suprise me.
But whenever we have threads like this, there are always people who come in and say "oh, good thing I don't eat fast food anymore!' or something similar.
Noone I know personally does either, but obviously, they are still going strong. I'd like to see what their numbers are, though, in a society that is becoming more aware of these issues, has seen documentaries like "Supersize Me" etc.
Of course, we as a a nation are becoming more obese than ever before, so maybe people really just are ignorant and stupid, super busy, and just want a quick meal.

with greater poverty, the obesity rates actually rise. Its different in America because of our fastfood centric society. With poverty, the only type of food that becomes accessible are things like BK, McDonalds, tacobell and pizza. You can survive on a few bucks/day with these places.
believe it or not, healthy food is very expensive. Organic food is even more expensive.
its not about people being stupid or ignorant. Our economy is in the trash and we have a growing poverty rate. People are working harder (super busy) or are not working at all. This opens for a lot of fast food business.
i am wondering what the sales/profit margin for places like McDonalds and tacobell was in the past few years.

this is a lie. eating healthy can be done for just as cheap as fast food, but it requires much more time and effort on your part. People argue that eating healthy is more expensive, but it really doesnt have to be at all. I can back this up later if there is a debate or interest.
Clearly, the cheapest, laziest way to feed your self is 2 tacobell 5 layer burritos or whatever every day, but its mostly because of effort rather than actual food cost.
That being said, I still eat FF from time to time. Its incredibly convenient and loaded with all the flavors we are evolutionarily biased to crave (sodium, sugar, fat).

with teh dollar menus, you can survive on cheap food while being very busy trying to cope with economic hardships. I dont eat fastfood that much at all but i do know thats its more time consuming and expensive to make and eat healthy food. most impoverished people do not have the time.
i am interested in you proving to me how healthy food can be cheaper then say going to tacobell and grabbing their dollar menus.

Exactly right.
A few quick examples:
Can of tuna: $1-$2
Rotisserie Chicken (baked): $5-$7
1 lb lean ground beef or bison: $5-$6
1/2 lb sliced turkey (organic): $4-$5
And so on.

alright. Kinda busy, but Ill make a brief grocery list with prices. For a while there, my wife and I spent 20 bucks a week on groceries max. for the 2 of us. now, we tend to eat out of our garden as well (lettuce, etc) so we'll bump it to 30 for 21 meals.

You can buy very lean (96/4) ground beef for 4 dollars a pound; that's 1 dollar per serving. Chicken breast can also be had for a dollar a serving. You can buy even cheaper sirloin cuts for <1 per serving. You can get turkey breast and cutlets for the same price; pork too. Frozen shrimp can be purchased for about 1.50 a serving. Cod, catfish, flounder, snapper, trout can be purchased for a couple dollars a serving, or less.
Those are your main costs. Pair with green beans, peas, snap peas, carrots, squash/zucc, corn, and tomatoes for 20 cents a serving. If you're like me and grow heirloom tomatoes, bell peppers, and herbs you add those for free. You can get rice for pennies a serving or potatoes and bread. Whole grain pasta is only 1.99 for 6-8 servings.
It's pretty easy to eat healthy and cheap. Most of that stuff can be prepared in 20-45 minutes.

OK here is the the menu. damn it. cant cut n paste it out of excell.
Su M T W Th F S
B Eggs and Bacon Oatmeal Oatmeal Oatmeal Oatmeal Oatmeal Pancakes
L Cheesy Pasta leftovers Leftovers leftovers leftovers leftovers leftover open face sandwiches
D Chicken and Mashed Rice and Beans Chicken burritos Quiche with brocc Pasta Burgers/stewBacon egg-fried rice
Potatoes peas carrots Rice and bean and leftover chicken with fries or other potato with left over veggies
well, its not very clear with the formating but hopefully you can get the idea. most breakfasts are oatmeal. pancakes 1 day and Eggs and Bacon the other. A whole roaster or boiled chicken with mash and veggies on sunday and that chicken is reused in other dished throughout the week.
again, Im not that concerned with it being the absolute healtiest menu, just something that has a balance and incorporates lots of whole foods particularly grains and beans.
the one thing missing (I cut it for Bacon!) is fruit. But again, no reason why you couldnt cut out the bacon, make more bread (yes, we make our own bread) and have eggs and toast instead.
Second word I read on that menu is Bacon? I'm sure the list is fine booze, but the first impression is everything.

yeah, I tend to buy more meat and cheese than that list, as well as fruits and more fresh veggies. but my wife and I did actually live on 20/week for about a year. Again, it helped that we had plenty of radishes, arugula (though the wife doesnt like it), etc and then squash and toms in the summer.
also, I didnt include sugar ($2 for 5lbs on the site I linked) or butter/marg/cooking oil.

it was some of the tastiest chicken i've had in a while. gonna be stickin to that for most of my chicken needs. anyone else from texas had it?
their requirements:

not sure about the food colouring part though, i mean, when the chicken gets cooked, which it will do before it is sold, it will turn white anyway

I might be mistaken but I think NY strip/Delmonico is off the short loin (t-bone) portion. Sirlon over here is strictly the top side cut above the rear tenderloin. "Surloine" in French is above the loin. ofc the tenderloin/fillet(UK) is the best overall piece though, and that even goes to around

In the states what's marketed as sirloin is usually from round/flank/chcuk area and costs about 3.50-5.50 a pound. New York Strip/Rib Eye/Delmonico can be found on sale for 5.99-9.99 a pound, and Beef Tenderloin/Filet is between 13.99-19.99 a pound in a grocery store type place. If you were to buy the latter two from a butcher they would likely be 15.99-23.99 a pound and of higher quality.
