View Full Version : Who are some "One Hit Wonders"?

I'm talking about players that showed brief flashes in their career (1 or 2 seasons) and then completely falling off the map from there on.
Mike James comes to mind. Dude averaged 20 a game at one point in his career with he Raps then his career unfortunately went downhill from there.

Harold Miner is the biggest one hit wonder ever IMO.
He was the first "baby jordan".
Tony Delk scored 50 points once in a game. Only reason i know of Tony Delk is that he scored 50 points once

-Mike James put up 20/6 in '06. Highest PPG after that was 11.8.
-Pervis Ellison put up 20/11 in his 3rd season in 1991-92. Best season after that was 17/9 and averaged double digit points in only 1 other season.
-Gheorge Muresan- put up 14/9 in 1995-96 and won MIP.

Thats the thing you should never take anybody too seriously if they average 20 a game in Toronto or any lower ranked team. Plenty of players have had big scoring outputs on bad teams.

Dana Barros comes to mind.
After putting up decent numbers during his first five seasons in the league, Barros had a breakout year in 1994-95. The 5'11" point guard averaged 20.6 points and 7.5 assists, earned a trip to the 1995 All-Star Game, and won the Most Improved Player Award.
He went on to play eight more seasons in the league as a backup and only managed to average over double figures twice.
Also, being a Laker fan I remember Troy Hudson.
Playing with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Hudson put on a show in the 2003 Western Conference Finals against the Lakers as he averaged 23.5 points. In addition, he earned the nickname, "Laker Killer."
Hudson played in just 187 games over the next five seasons and is currently out of the NBA.

i think jerry stackhouse loosely fits the description. he has had some solid years, but 2000-01 he was on 29ppg. around that time he has a couple of low 20ppg seasons and then never reaches above 20 again.

Quentin Richardson average 17ppg once and won the 3-point contest the same year. Now, he's just a glorified role player who's most famous for getting into fights with Paul Pierce.
Anyone also remember Keon Clark? He showed potential and freakishly athletic abilities for a guy his size. He only had 1-2 good seasons before injuries/drug issues got the best of him.
Eddie Robinson as well. Showed promise on the Hornets, then got a fat contract from the Bulls, to being out of the league due to attitude problems.

this is a great thread that brought up some names I haven't heard in a while, I love these players because they just pop out of nowhere one year with major stats! Hard to guess what leads to the one and done career year - a trade that gives them more minutes, new coach, contract year, or fluke. Some of them got massive contracts for it (Marc Jackson in GS, Turkoglu, Curry in NY to name a few)
I added the career years as well:
Current: Turkoglu (07-09), Eddy Curry (06/07), Tyson Chandler(07/08) , Josh Howard (07-09),Mike Dunleavy (07/08),Larry Hughes(99/00 &04/05),
Back in the day: Corliss Williamson (97/98), Eric Dampier (03/04) averaged 12 and 12, Marc Jackson (00/01) , Blue Edwards (92/93), Terry Mills (93-95), Dana Barros (94/95), Bob Sura (03/04), Danny Fortson (00/01) 16 & 16 per game

If we are talking about One Hit Wonders, and not "One hit Average players", then Bill Walton and Tmac. Both had incredible peak, which lasted 1-2 seasons only.
Completely disagree. The emphasis on "One-Hit" anything is the number One. T-Mac averaged over 25 points for over a seven year span. Regardless of the bias or haters on these forums for T-Mac, let's continue to be sane here please. That is not a one-hit wonder scenario.
And Bill Walton was just simply vastly injury-proned. He won a MVP, MVP Finals, and 2 All-Star Trips. That right away takes away the "One-Hit" definition. Everyone knows he would have had a spectacular career if he wasn't injured. Heck, he was one of the NBA's 50th greatest players at its 50th anniversary. Don't forget he came back with the Celtics and won a NBA 6th Man award.
Some of the answers here have been good, especially Mike James. To add on to that list: Don Maclean and Dana Barros. Turkoglu is among those of recent that I can think of.
He doesn't fit 100% here, but I can't go over Shareef Abdur-Rahim (in his Vancouver time).
Ok that were more than 2 seasons but I think of his whole career as a continuous one hit wonder.

One that may not qualify as a "hit" but came to mind is Austin Croshere. Not that I expected him to be a great player, but after watching him play in the 2000 NBA Finals, I expected a lot more from him in the future. He played very well in that series and I was impressed, but he didn't really do anything of note afterwards other than get rewarded with a fat contract.

Ernie DiGregorio. Great player at college for Providence in the 70's, led them to a final four, was selected third overall by the Buffalo Braves. Led the league in assists as well as free throw percentage in his rookie year on his way to winning ROY as well as a playoff appearance where Ernie averaged 14 pts, 9 ast.
Sadly his career was cut short by injuries, but he was one of the most gifted passers in the game at that day and age, and many old-timers rave about his potential and what he could have been. It's a shame he was only able to play 5 short seasons in the league.

Dale Ellis (declined quickly, some trades and some injuries; once averaged 27.5 ppg on 50/48/82, never got close to that again, still a pretty good career)
Clark Kellog (one of the few rookies to average 20/10, chornic knee problems forced him to retire)
Ralph Sampson (some really good first years, lots of potential, off-court problems and some knee and back troubles made his career go downhill)

Mike James- averaged 20/6/3 in '06. Averaged double digit points in only 2 other seasons and he's been in the league since 2002.
Bobby Simmons- averaged 16/6 in '05. The following season was the only other season he cracked double digit points.
Tony Delk- somehow managed a 50 point game while never averaging more than 12.3 PPG in any other season.
Brian Scalabrine- looked like Larry Bird in game 5 against Detroit in '04. Career 3.1 PPG player.
Michael Adams- averaged 27/11 in '91. Never averaged more than 18.5 PPG or 7.6 APG in any other season.
Darrell Walker- had a unique statline of 9.5 PPG/8.8 RPG/8.0 APG in 1990.
Jerome James- averaged 13/7 with almost 2 BPG in the '05 playoffs. Knicks gave him a contract the following season and only played in 90 games over the next 4 years without averaging more than 3 PPG or 2 RPG.

Does Larry Hughes fall into this category? He was on some high profile Cavaliers teams during the James years, but his 2005 All-Star season of 22 points, 6+ rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals a game completely blew away anything he did before or after.
He was just 26 that season and it led to his getting a max contract. He never resembled a max player again in his career, though he did play 13 seasons.

Troy Hudson had one playoffs somewhere in the early-mid 2000s with the TWolves (I forget the specific year) where he went berserk for a few weeks. Looked like a star being born moment ala Paul George in last year's playoffs... only x5. Dropped 40+ in at least one game I remember, and I think people started calling him 'Laker Killer' after that playoffs. He got a nice extension from Minny too.
Then he just faded into obscurity. It was very strange.

Ricky Davis
I was gonna mention him, but if you look up his stats, he had a solid 6-8 year stretch.
