So yesterday at work...

this black kid comes in looking for a job. he's 17, talking about he has to support his wife/kids, and he'd do anything just to make some money. i'm like sorry man we're not hiring, try xxxx or xxxx place...

this morning i come into work, a few hours later this kid shows up with a little sack with clothes and a blanket over himself shivering(its raining outside) asking if he could just warm up. i let him sit down and i'm talking to him for a while, grilling him with questions. turns out he was part of a local youth program where he got kicked out for punching a window glass. i don't think he was telling the whole story since he kiind of eluded to missing some classes, and talking about how they don't know how much pressure/stress he has, etc. and don't understand. his girl is housed at the youth program where he was, and his newborn kids he had with her are staying with his girls mom's place.

i find out his whole background. dude was from South Central LA...i believed everything he said, was real convincing and seemed genuine. he was talking about how everyone is part of gangs over there and how crazy it is, how every day he was thankful to be alive(when i was grilling him i was specifically asking how real it is compared to the movies), and he acted like it was worse than the movies. he talked about some crazy shit like robbing and shooting people regularly, and how he used to be with the crips, and they'd always be going back and forth with the bloods(or maybe it was vice versa). he did look pretty thug but again kid was only 17...

this kid didn't have a drivers license, didn't know his social security#, and was out looking for jobs homeless. all of his family(mostly aunts) had kicked him out of their house which he blamed mostly on them getting mad he got someone pregnant. he said his mom who lives about 30 min's away wouldn't take him back, and she already had kids with some other man they were raising, and as they got older she cared less and less about him. but basically he said they never really got along and she never really cared much about him. either way he seemed to have burned every relative/family bridge he had.

kid came in with a motel blanket over his head shivering like i said. some dude staying at the motel late at night saw him sleeping outsdie and felt sorry for him and gave him the blanket. every business where he tried to take shelter from the rain from had kicked him out, threatening to call police. a storage place down the street gave him a cup of coffee but told him he had to leave once they opened up. now the kid is hoping a BBQ joint down the street will hire him(w/o a SS card/drivers license :facepalm). he says he's been trying to get back into the program but they won't let him back in. i ask even if they see you homeless and no place to go? and he's like yeah they don't give a ****....

i'm thinking a lot of things while all of this is going on:

a) feeling real bad for him on a dreary rainy day being homeless and having to sleep outside, shivering, with his clothes wet. that was my 1st impression.

b) not feeling as bad, or rather a lot of the why of where he's at right now is his own fault from what it sounds like even tho he didn't say it. you burn all of those bridges with relatives where none of them will take you in anymore, including the one youth program where you get kicked out and they fed/sheltered you. he was also pretty open about what he did when he was in LA and gangbangin, and talking about how he killed people, and some other more ruthless shit. now i'm always skeptical on stuff like that since i think a lot of people exaggerate brag about that stuff, but his tone wasn't really bragging more than informative to what i was asking between what he experienced and how hollywood depicts it. either way lets just say he's done some shady shit, and he sure isn't a completely innocent person from the stuff he was telling me, but he's also in a horrible spot right now homeless, nowhere to go, no money, just a real small plastic bag with clothes, only 17, where its a miserable day outside looking for a job he practically has no chance in getting. he keeps hoping the youth place will take him back but he's also acting like they probably won't.

c) he also had a BB gun on him from what he said for personal protection. he also talked about how he was trying to change, and if he wasn't he'd have already tried to rob someone around here. again i wasn't really worried for my safety since it was if anything just blunt, open/honest back and forth where i was talking to him from a curiosity standpoint if anything, and not some adult talking down to some kid. hell i consider myself a kid more than old person anyways still, but just know he wasn't really bragging at any point more than it being informative to my generalizations from the movies.

So i'm contemplating a lot of things. if anyone i know is hiring(which they generally aren't, and even then they'd be very unlikely to pay this kid under the table with no license/ss card). if i should give him a lil cash to help him out which i didn't. in the end i had a unopened box of fruit loops, 1 sleeve of crackers, and some soda in the fridge i put into a trash bag and gave him in case he got hungry later, including an old umbrella i've had here for a while. then he rolled down the street, about a 5 min walk to the BBQ place to see if they were open to see if they'd hire him.

anyways what would YOU have done in this predicament? kid was definitely ghetto/hood. he definitely sounded like he burned his own bridges and is hard headed/lazy and seemed to make a lot of excuses blaming others for why he's where he's at. he sounds to have victimized innocent people back in LA when he was in a gang which made me feel less sorry for him, and there were some incidents he talked about when he was living with his mom and going to DC public schools where he got kicked out. but he was polite throughout our whole conversation, and didn't directly ask me for any handouts or anything, just to stay and warm up for a lil while.

if i've ever seen a kid with no place to go, and very likely nobody that is going to help him it was this kid. a really low point that made me realize how f'd up some peoples lives are. but again a lot of it really seemed like his own doing....

i can hire anyone as long as they have a working visa/drivers license/ss#...even then i can pay them under the table if i wanted but thats a risk since they've been cracking down on that with all of the illegal alien shit going on in the country.

business is erratic in the automotive industry, and is with just about every shop unless they're big with fleet accounts and even they get slow. even then i generally only have to write estimates which can amount to 0-12+ a day. again erratic. employee's take care of the work, bosses/management generally don't do the physical labor unless they're a very small shop or they're shorthanded.

some of u might as well save this post since i'm not going to keep answering the doubters. i don't even give a **** if people dn't believe me, you don't have to. it really has lil relevance to me posting here, and its not like i thrw it in anyones faces other than miserable mailmen, and tranny forest rangers :blah

While I consider myself an athiest, I have seen a lot of situations where religion can help someone turn there life around.

Much respect for your actions, sucks that he has absolutely no place to start. You are right that it is his own fault that he is in this situation but you can also place some of the blame on the environment he was raised. A lot of kids have nowhere to go but down in the ghetto, their role models are the drug dealers riding around on fat rims blasting aggressive music all day, so it's only natural that a lot of kids would turn to crime. I would give that youth place a call and put in a good word, say he's serious about setting his life on the right track and all that if you feel like he was genuine about the things he said.

parts are delivered by the dealership/auto parts companies/junkyards. anybody who knows anything about a auto related shop knows this.

to me the whole estimator skill as a job is a joke tbh. but that is my current role here altho i used to do the painting and estimating, until i hired somebody and taught them to do it where i only had to focus on the office.

i get 15-35% discounts from list w/ dealeer parts. A/M i get huge discounts but it depends on what part and what model than across the board, sometimes like 70% off list(with Keystone for ex. but my acct with some parts is setup as @cost + markup instead of discounting from list) but i've been with somje suppliers for a long time. they can't mark up because they HAVE to stay competitive to the other parts places. they eat those costs, and most are hiring out driver contractors so they aren't paying them every day of the week. parts depts don't make that much money and many have gone under since the recession....but thats also why they are doing what they can to get any shops business.

i almost forgot all about posting this since it happened a few days ago, and i was banned so i couldn't. f'in gay mods bannign me over a pic of men circle jerkin just showinhg their ass :wtf:

anyways check this out. so this kid shows back up talking about the BBQ place down the street hired him, and i guess got his mom on the phone who supposedly gave the owner his SS#, and whatever else from what he said. he flashed me a knot of $1's...like showing me he's got money now. either way they hired him to clean up and do the dishes i think. i sort of know the owner but not well, and i know he's some government agent black guy who isn't there that much where his daughter runs the place, and from what the kid said he was real sympathetic to the kids situation and actually paid for his motel room for the week. i'm sort of skeptical but i know he's a pretty good guy like that so maybe he'd do something like that for a young brotha.

kid is still carrying the trash bag i gave him. supposedly still trying to get back into the program. he came just asking me if he could sit for a while, it was about 10am or so, and he said he was headed down to the BBQ place around 11am to work. i had some shit to do at work where i was sort of busy helping in another bay, so i left him alone in the office for a few minutes at a time, sweating leaving him there without anyone watching. altho there isn't much thats small he could really steal other than maybe my wireless card on my laptop, but like i said thats why i kept coming back in every few minutes.

either way i got done helping my body guy with something, and came back into the office. i kind of ran out of stuff to ask him so it was a little bit of uncomfortable silence while i was doing some paper work. he's still waiting, it was about 10:30 at that point...then he asks me what cars are for sale out on the lot, and i tell him nothing right now. he asks me the situation with the cars and i tell him some we're working on, some we own and are selling parts off of. he then says "can i take a look around at your cars?"....i'm like okay sure.

so i'm not really watching him, just doing some paper work, and then i had to help my body guy out again with something so i was busy and not watching him at all but he's at least not in the office so i wasn't really sweating him much. i get finished with that about 15 minutes later, i look around and i see this kid in my old Audi that has some transmission issues and had been sitting for a while. at first i'm thinking he's just looking at the interior or whatever, so i walk up and this kid has a cloth draped on his lap with all of this change he must've stole from the 3 cars that were unlocked(for different reasons). i even saw my old pocket utility knife i kept in that Audi center console in his lap bundled with the change, and some other crap i'm sure was in some of those cars. he doesn't see me btw as i walk up, he's in the passenger side door and i open up the driver side and i'm like "what are you doing?" he plays it off like he's just looking at the interior of the car, and had just wrapped up his cloth and put it in his pocket.

do you honestly think the answers you gave made any sense? the main thing a person working in an auto repair shop would be going around making sure everything is ok and picking up the slack on everything.
