I think this one might be a little bit out of my league. I might be able to hang in a music or writers draft but I'm a rookie when it comes to everthing else.

Yeah, but I am just very curious to see what mix of arts people will be getting.
The difficulty lies in that you have to be knowledgeable in all fields.

Don't u think we will see a lot of the same ppl from the music, writer and movie drafts? Easy for managers to copy and hard for judges to decide.

Don't u think we will see a lot of the same ppl from the music, writer and movie drafts? Easy for managers to copy and hard for judges to decide.

Sure, but you can easily find rankings in the internet anyways.

Also, no classical music draft has been made as far as I know, and the movie one was obviously more focused on actors, that should have no place here.

Jasi
10-18-2010, 06:20 PM
It's late here, I'm going to sleep + tomorrow morning I'll be in a long meeting, so I'll probably check back in 12 hours or so, when most of you are asleep.

I'll randomize the starting list and post it later than that, so that you guys will be around.

Fatal9
10-18-2010, 06:23 PM
in.

I do somewhat agree with vapid though, literature and movies are a bit redundant because we just had a draft on those two, making the talent pool almost too large (think of how many great writers were left in the other draft, this one is even deeper).

Jasi
10-18-2010, 06:30 PM
Don't worry guys, I think it will do this way.

It's more difficult to pick 2-3 out of a number, than 10.

Also, I wouldn't want to mutilate human genius by excluding writers and directors :D It would look so disharmonious...

Goodnight!

Jackass18
10-18-2010, 08:51 PM

Jasi
10-19-2010, 04:46 AM
Ok guys, sleep brought advice.
I've changed my mind.

Not really because of the redundancy with other drafts, but because I think there is actually so much to say about "visual" arts only.
By visual arts I mean painting, sculpture, architecture and installations.

So, before we start, I need all participants to give me their green light for this change of scope of the draft.

Do you agree to limit categories to painting, sculpture, architecture and installations?

My picks are going to be heavily skewed towards artists and art styles that I'm interested in with less emphasis on historically canonical rankings. I wished I was picking later than 2nd but w/e

With that said, my first pick is Edward Hopper. Hopper is one of the most renowned American realist. His meticulous and geometrically precise paintings often drawn on the common features of American urban and rural life.

Hopper's style can be juxtaposed with the surrealist/cubist derived art which became trendy in the early 20th century. By using the contrast of light and shadow, Hopper's paintings are often filled with melancholic and noir sense of ambiance.

Despite the minimalist overt actions presented, Hoppers' paintings are subtle mysteries tinging with powerful emotions, such as loneliness, desolation, yearning and desire.

Rembrandt

School/Movement: Dutch/Baroque

Usually recognized as the greatest figure in Dutch painting. Style marked by rich and harmonious use of colors and lighting.

some favorite paintings by him:

I disagree. His painting works weren't numerous but outstanding.
He was an innovator with a huge influence on painters to come. Just think about the toned down, shaded coulours, or the detailed depiction of nature as background. Besides the influence, his sheer talent in painting was elite, look at the expressivity of his faces matched by very few.
His importance as a painter goes way beyond the popular Mona Lisa.

His importance as a painter goes way beyond the popular Mona Lisa.
he had nothing to do with inventing or popularizing these techniques, he jsut had good techniques and made paintings with alot of mystery and supposed symbolism behind them, and was a very talented draftsman, that's why he's regarded so highly, sport

I was actually going to pick Duchamp. His surrealist style basically paved the way for a lot of modern artists. Nude descending a staircase is probably one of my favorite surrealist painting period.
he's not a surrealist, he was dada and created conceptual art

I pick Donatello

The most important and influential of the early Renaissance sculptors. His sculptures ranged widely in subject and also in materials. He put out masterpieces in wood, bronze, marble, terracotta, pietra serena (sandstone) and several other kinds of stone. I think he was one of the first since the ancients to truly achieve lifelike quality and detail in his work, which gave him a lasting influence that extended over the Renaissance (and beyond) sculptors who followed him.

I wanted Warhol (and would have gotten him had I had internet access at 9am this morning), so I went with him instead.

And yes, everyone knows Basketball Jesus is clutch. I enjoyed my run on the Celtics. I also enjoy attempting to put together the first all white team since the 1950's.

I'm going to take Michael Snow. One of the most influential and renowned contemporary artist. Snow is a versatile artist whose worked has filled the wide spectrum of visual art.

His best known work is the experimental film Wavelength. An epic structuralist film that diverges from conventional cinema and deals with the conflict between illusion and reality within the structures of film making. Absolving the audience of its human elements, Snow's film encapsulates the confrontations that unfolds mise en scene: linear vs. non linearity of time, light vs. dark, motion vs. stillness etc.

In absence of the story aspect of traditional cinema, Snow's Wavelength is much more akin to a visual painting. By stripping away the abstractions of film and leaving its core naked for the camera's zoom, the film is a metaphysical journey into the understanding of the act of seeing.

His other works have been in minimalist paintings:
http://www.shelleydeck.com/teacher/images/michaelsnowmixedfeelings_000.jpg
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/3903/vlcsnap5415060wa0.jpg

as well as installation art:
http://www.dittwald.com/torontosculpture/gallery/full/Snow_flight1.jpg

Wavelength is a film but it's experimental and avant garde nature make Snow more appropriate in this Artist draft than film draft since his movies are non-commercial by construction.

Here's the movie. It's just 45 minutes of zooming so decide for yourself whether you care to watch it. It's one of the most consistently studied work in film studies.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3009876496807585942#

If this pick is deemed inappropriate since Snow is a filmmaker/painter/installation art/etc. I can pick someone else.

Thanks Black Joker.

Phidias is obviously the father of all sculptors, and the artist that took the ideals of the Greek classical spirit at their best.
The author of the main statues of Athen's acropolis, he was also the supervisor of the whole construction of Parthenon, that he enriched with the famous, colossal chryselephantine statue of Athena Parthenos.
He also was the author of one of the Seven Wonders: the great statue of Zeus at Olimpia.
Most of his works did not reach our times, but we have plenty of Roman (and later) copies.

There are lots of insane buildings he's done that I'd love to visit some day. I prefer Frank Llyod Wright's organic style emphasizing function and surroundings but I'm not dissapointed at all in getting my second choice in architecture.

Not the creator of abstract art, where did you pull that out of your ass, even Whistler was painting abstract paintings in the 1860s
Not the creator of the concept technically, it had existed before him with some impressionists but he began the modern abstract movement as we think of it today (shit, you could say some cave drawings in India started abstract art if we are being this technical). Whistler's wasn't really representative of abstract art as it would exist in the 20th century. Ask anyone, scholar or even someone who follows art only casually, who was the first true abstract artist was and you'll always hear Kandinsky.

LOL @ you denying his huge influence both from his paintings and his theories. I'm actually not a huge fan of his work either, but he was an "influence" pick for me.

I select Alfred Stieglitz.
More on him in less than 24 hours when i'll be back home. Thanks sawyersauce and everyone for going on in the meantime

Alfred Stieglitz

Stieglitz is perhaps the most important figure in the history of visual arts in America. That is certainly not to say that he was the greatest artist America has ever produced. Rather, through his many roles – as a great photographer, as a discoverer and promoter of photographers and of artists in other media, and as a publisher, patron, and collector – he had a greater impact on American art than any other person has had.

Alfred Stieglitz had the multifold abilities of a Renaissance man. A visionary of enormously wide perspective, his accomplishments were remarkable, his dedication awe-inspiring. A photographer of genius, a publisher of inspiration...
-

I once saw an exhibition of his works and fell in love with photography, because of his mastery of framing and composition of real life scenes, which for me are the most intriguing challenges of photography.

I select Le Corbusier, a pioneer in modern architecture.

damn I was thinking about changing my pick to Le Corbusier from Jasper Johns. Corbusier is probably the father of modern architecture. Most influential imo.

Jasper Johns
http://areeweb.polito.it/didattica/polymath/htmlS/info/NOVITA/Tammet/img/image014.jpg
Harbinger of pop art movement, Johns' use of iconic imagery in his works questioned the meaning in symbols by neutralizing them of their context.

My number 1 architect pick Corbusier was taken. So I'm debating between three architects. I think I'm going to go with Alvar Aalto cause of his influence. Pioneer in nordic modernism, Aalto worked in furniture and architectural design.

My list for architects is dwindling and there's some painters I want, but I'll see if they will drop (probably won't) and take:

Bertel Thorvaldsen

Danish sculptor of international fame, who spent most of his life in Italy (from 1789–1838). Born in Copenhagen into a Danish/Icelandic family of humble means he was accepted to the Royal Academy of Arts when he was eleven years old. Working part time with his father who was a wood carver he won many honors and medals at the academy and was awarded a stipend to travel to Rome and continue his education. In Rome he quickly made a name for himself as a sculptor. Maintaining a large workshop in Rome, he worked in a heroic neo-classicist style and had patrons all over Europe.

Upon his return to Denmark in 1838 he was received as a national hero and a museum, Thorvaldsens Museum, was erected to house his works next to Christiansborg Palace. Thorvaldsen himself is buried within the courtyard of the museum.

In his time he was seen as the successor of master sculptor Antonio Canova, but his strict adherence to classical norms has tended to estrange modern audiences. Among his famous works is a statute of Jason the Argonaut, a figure of Christ, and the tomb monument of Pope Pius VII, the only work by a non-italian to be located in the St. Peter's Basilica, the statues of Nicolaus Copernicus and Jozef Poniatowski in Warsaw, and of Maximilian I in Munich.

Brancusi is good. He's considered one of the best sculptors of the past century. I considered picking him.

I was debating between 2 japanese artists. I think I'm going to take Takashi Murakami. One of the seminal contemporary asian artists today. Will post pics in a bit.
