View Full Version : What's the worst city you have been to?

For me it would be Dallas. One of the fastest and diverse cities but yet everything is spaced out far as ****. The weather is horrible and the people who were born n raised here are oblivious to how lame their city is comparred to others. Not to mention they take their whole style from other cities then claim it as their own.
Crime rise it's LA by far. Drivebys cop shootings, etc. Stuff was crazy.

I haven't been to the USA, but Athens, Greece is the worst I've encountered in my travels. The city is a dirty, decrepit shithole, crime is rife (I met a guy who had been robbed twice and he had only been there since that morning), and people shoot up smack a few feet from police officers. Add all that to the shootings and street crime and you have an absolute armpit of a city.
Sure, they've got the Acropolis, but there's a lot more to Athens than that... Almost all of it shit.

That's a damn shame about Athens, I've always wanted to go to Greece and the Mediterranean.
The worst city I've been to is no surprise: Detroit, MI. I was there for three days with some friends for a massive conference; the first we stayed in downtown Detroit surrounded by meth-head junkies, deserted and depleting buildings, Homeless Square, and trash and filth everywhere. We immediately canceled our next two nights and got new rooms outside of downtown somewhere. I don't remember where exactly but it was still an absolute dump, at least I didn't feel like I was going to get knifed for my wallet though.
Dishonorable Mention: Louisville, KY. Stayed here for 5 days in high school for an AAU tournament. The people were extremely warm and welcoming, but the actual city was filthy and smelled like ass. My teammates and I went to a Steak N Shake at 3 a.m. on our last night. WOW. What a sight.

You took my thunder Randy!!
Sorry Deuce but Detroit may very well be the armpit of North America. I only spent a few nights there on 2 separate occasions so I might be jumping the gun a little but I saw more then enough to convince myself that I'm making an accurate assertion here...
Also, Hamilton Ontario is no post card city itself. The irony of it being called Steel Town is not lost on me...

Honestly i don't know about the night life. I was 15 when i was there. I was on holidays in California with my parents and made a day trip there. Somehow the whole city scared me. All the dirt, shady looking people everywehre, just didn't feel comfortable at all. I can't even imagine what it must be there like at night.

I had the honor of staying in East Saint Louis a couple of times
I remember walking to the liquor store and saw a group(about 7-8) of hookers (all around 14-17) walking threw alleys and looking for cusomers. When I finally got to the store it was about 4 drunks of the corner, a crackhead In the middle of the stree and another group of people across the street. Around the corner is a block of old dirty houses that had people sitting on the porch and barking at anything that walks by. smh

The worst city I've ever been to is Allegan, Michigan. I used to date someone who lived in Holland, MI (along the coast of Lake Michigan) and Allegan just happened to be the halfway point between my home and Holland. As such, I was driving past Allegan all the time, and the city itself sits on a beautiful riverfront. There's a boardwalk, fountain, classy looking, small-time buildings. It appeared to have a certain charm about it.
So, one day, my girl and I decided to meet in Allegan for once. It was mid-afternoon on a weekday. The city was nearly vacant. Every other store was an antique shop and absolutely nothing was open. A tumbleweed truly and carefully whisped its way across the street. Two eateries remained open: a saloon and Pizza Hut, so we tried the saloon. We took two steps in, saw one man at the bar in a cowboy had and boots, then took two reverse steps right back out.
Out of options, we settled on Pizza Hut and spent the rest of the night selecting our favorite LFO and Billy Joel songs from their jukebox. Allegan is the most dissapointing city of all-time. Also, it's the meth capital of Michigan. So I guess a city can only dissapoint you so much with a moniker like that.

I'm not sure about worst city... but the worst areas I've ever found myself in were East Oakland and Puerta Vallarta.
I had a friend who went to a music school in Oakland, and the area he lived in was straight up scary. When I wanted to go to the store, I actually drove about 15 minutes to another area, because I didn't want to get out of my car at the local spots.
In Puerta Vallarta I took a cab with a one-armed Mexican to the ghettos to hook up some coke (talk about drunk and stupid). We drove about 10 minutes into the city, and I would simply describe the area as 3rd world. People living in concrete holes in the wall, and streets that looked like a warzone.

You are supposed to be repping our great city, not ripping it. Maple Heights FTW!
The biggest sh!thole I've ever been to is probably St. Maarten, followed closely by LA. I went on a cruise through the Caribbean a few years ago and St. Maarten was one of the stops. The tourist area was well-kept as you would expect, but I always check out the actual cities when I go places, even if it is recommended that you don't stray from the tourist areas (as the staff did on this particular stop).
I soon discovered why travel into town is frowned upon. It was extreme poverty, an ungodly amount of drug-dealers that flock to any Americans that they see (in a bit of a scary way) and I even had a man offer me an underage prostitute (I was only outside of the tourist area for about an hour).
Guy in a white suit driving a Benz pulled over to the sidewalk me and my buddies were walking on with a girl of about 13 in the passenger side and asked us if we were looking for a party while patting her leg. It was so disturbing, I didn't even know how to respond.
LA was basically my nightmare city, though. Insanely dirty, crowded, sprawling and a generally awful vibe in the air that is hard to describe. The weather may be warm, but that is one cold city at its core. No one looks happy, it takes two hours to drive 10 miles... Awful.

Yeah the areas that are all touristy are beautiful and fun (Bourbon St, etc) with all the mardi gras themes, fountains, music, dancing, food...but if you go to the actual hoods of NO then good lord. For big cities it was definately LA. I really haven't been many places outside of Alberta/BC, other than a roadtrip down to cali with a friends family like 4/5 years ago. And even them it is like in the mountains or on the ocean or something.
But LA was disgusting to me, I thought it was just me since I have lived out in the country and hate going to the city for anything, but after seeing all you guys mention LA aswell I guess it was justified.

Everyone has seen pictures of Santorini with the white buildings and their blue rooves and thinks 'Greece', but it is only the Greek Islands that are like that. Venice Beach was really the only area that I got any kind of enjoyment out of. It sort of reminded me of Washington Square Park (in NYC) circa-1994, only on the beach. Lots of interesting people, street musicians, illicit activities, etc.
Santa Monica was OK, I guess. I just got a feeling of fakeness everywhere, though. It reminded me of an outdoor shopping mall on the beach. Not my scene.

I haven't been to too many major cities, only a handful: NYC, San Francisco, Montreal, Miami/Fort Lauderdale, Orlando/Disney, Key West, San Diego, and Las Vegas. Of the bunch, Vegas impressed me the least, believe it or not. Maybe because I was 30 the first time I went, and by then casinos and clubs and stuff were old hat. Had I gone at 21 I'd probably have seen it differently.

A. My friend lives in Silverlake (he is married... not gay) and I stayed with him.
B. My friend's brother lives in West Hollywood and he is gay. He is also one cool mofo and I couldn't care less about his sexual persuasion, although I am the ignorant hick, right?

Try Atlanta. It's LA without the hills or the beaches. Terrible sprawl and traffic surrounded by ugly suburban strip malls within a 25 mile radius and beyond that is some most ass backward hillbilly wastelands in the US. In the summer it's 90-100 F most days with 90% + humidity and in the winter it's prone to ice storms.

Are you so "LA" that you can't take a step back and realize that not every city is so filled with pollution that you can't even see the (unimpressive) skyline? The smog was actually sickening... As in, it made my sinuses go haywire and I could barely breath.
As for your comment about my friend being a transplant who is afraid of certain cultures... I can only laugh. LA's worst sections are a walk in the park compared to the most dangerous areas of the city which I reside in.
Sorry... It wasn't 'scary' in the least... Not the Mexican parts, not the black parts...
Just lame, sprawling and dirty... And the supposed 'nice' areas were so completely plastic that it made my skin crawl. Fakeness to the max.
Btw, isn't like 80-percent of LA's population made-up of transplants? If you love LA so much, you would inherently also love the transplants, because they make up the vast majority of the f#cking place.

Hm, I don't know about the worst city I've been to but there are quite a few I have little to no interest of ever going to again...
Camden, New Jersey - Aside from the water front and the aquarium certain sections are awfully rough around the edges.
Atlantic City - A complete and utter shithole. Of all my traveling this would be the last place in the United States that I would want to grow up.
I absolutely love most of New Jersey too. I grew up in and around Central Jersey which believe it or not is some of the most beautiful and diverse land in the United States. North Jersey is cool with some really nice areas and the South Jersey/Jersey Shore is great as well.
A lot of places where I have had less than great experiences (places in the midwest, south, etc) I haven't spent enough time in to really pass judgment.

Actually, I did go to Skid Row. It is such a famous name, I had to take a look. It was just a concentration of homeless. Not exactly fear-inducing.
I also checked out Compton. It seemed relatively pleasant... Certainly didn't live up to its bad name (that is a good thing, btw).
Honestly... If you think that someone who lives in f#cking Cleveland is 'scared' of anything that LA has to offer, it just shows how ignorant you are. As someone who was born and raised in LA, you're right. I grew up just South of Downtown. I've had friends and family members who were involved with local gangs. A lot of the "fear" is media driven. If you watch or read LA news, you'd get the idea that we're a bunch of thugs who go around robbing and killing ourselves in a barbaric way.
For the most part, our neighborhoods are filled with good, hard working people just like anywhere else. If you come with an attitude or looking to get into sh*t, yeah, you're gonna get messed with and the experience will not be that pleasant. If you mind your own business and act normally, nobody cares. For all the hype Skid Row receives, it's not very dangerous at all. Most of the hype comes from politicians and police officers acting like they're doing something good in the community and they use the homeless as scapegoats to push their BS agendas. It's the same thing in places such as Compton. As you saw for yourself, it's not what it's built up to be. We're just working class people trying to make our way in this world. The weather is horrible and the people who were born n raised here are oblivious to how lame their city is comparred to others. Not to mention they take their whole style from other cities then claim it as their own.
Crime rise it's LA by far. Drivebys cop shootings, etc. Stuff was crazy.
I live in Dallas and I have been to just about every single major city in the US...
the weather is horrible during the summer, that's it...

Trust me... I'm not proud of the fact that there are areas in Cleveland that are virtual war zones. The decline of American industrialism sapped this area's life-blood and a lot of the people who would have worked in the steel mill 30 years ago have no job opportunities.
Where there is extreme poverty and no jobs, there will be crime. I'm simply pointing out to Sergio that someone who lives in Cleveland is not going to be afraid to go anywhere in LA.
There is a part of me that would feel more privileged if my first thought upon seeing Compton and Skid Row was, "get me out of here... This is scary." But, alas, I see a lot worse every time I drive through East Cleveland.
It is a misnomer, though, that all people in Ohio are 'hicks.' Of course, there are rural areas out in the sticks that fit the bill, but Cleveland is one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse cities in the country. That is something that I actually am proud of.
Obviously, my experience in LA wasn't all that positive. However, I understand it allure for some and I'm certainly not out to denigrate someone's home. I often have to deal with that living in Cleveland and it gets old really quickly.
It all comes down to the kind of city that you are comfortable with. Obviously, a lot of people love LA and more power to them.
I've seen plenty of Eastern European cities that were just filthy and impoverished. But that's what you expect.
But Marseille came as a surprise You expect a large city right in the probably most tourism-dense part of Europe to at least be somewhat presentable and tourist friendly, but Marseille is an absolute shithole. Rotten trash all over the streets, rats everywhere, the locals are on edge and just a bad overall vibe in that place.

Your brain just isn't equipped to comprehend LA.
Venice, down town, santee alley, zuma beach, Malibu, so many great parts of LA, tourists always go to the same retarded parts and come away with a retarded impression of LA because they dont know the right places to go to
all that urban low-rise sprawl is beyond my comprehension, eh? venice is nice, i'll give you that. in venice, i got a taste of what LA could've been if they dumped the hollywood pretension and embraced the surf/eccentricity lifestyle. if i was somehow forced to move to LA (for work or whatever), i would definitely live in venice.
the rest of LA? the clubs, the suburbia, the pollution, the sprawl, the fakeness? miss me with that. any other city you can WALK - another negative factor in la is that the public transport is BEYOND horrible - and find dope little nooks and crannies. LA? :oldlol:
i'm not completely ragging on the town: there are good, talented people there - i have a few mates that live there that i love with all my heart - but in general, the people are cold and unfriendly. you don't get smiles, general chit chat on the streets, etc etc.

Omaha Nebraska is as boring as hell...
Won't disagree there...I was there during a bus trip in 2001, on the way to Milwaukee to see my aunt and uncle (who have since moved to a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama). We had a 3-hour layover there, and it was on a Sunday morning, so except for the Greyhound station, nothing else around downtown was opened. In fact, I'm kinda surprised that their downtown area was pretty big for a city of its size.
To the answer, I have to say Las Vegas is pretty crummy. I mean, if you're not on the Strip, you're not missing much as far as the rest of the city. I had the misfortune to stay on Fremont Street in downtown L.V. during this past Labor Day weekend, and the hotel I wanted to book near the Strip was sold out. Of course, I realize that prostitution is legal in most of Nevada, but Fremont Street reminded me of a lot of the "tracks" I see around here in Los Angeles. It's also not to mention that Las Vegas (and pretty much anywhere along the Interstate 15 corridor between there and Riverside County in California) is pretty redneck-ish and backwater.

I also grew up in South L.A., and currently reside in Inglewood, and even briefly lived in Compton in the early 90s...of course, there's crime but things are relatively tamer than they've been in recent years. You're absolutely right about the people; for every knucklehead in each neighborhood, there's at least 7-8 more people who are law-abiding citizens and are working-class. I know when to stay out of certain neighborhoods, but even when I visited the so-called dangerous neighborhoods, I've never had any problems; I just minded my business and kept it moving.
You can't always listen and pay attention to the bullshit that the media puts out; you need to experience it for yourself, and then form your own opinion.

I went to new orleans pre-katrina on the way to see my grandma in biloxi. What a disgusting city. I didn't even want to explore it.

Why?
It usually happens when somebody coming from Madrid says he doesnt like Barcelona, and since you said im sooo stereotypical....2 + 2 = 4.
But nevermind.

Living out in AZ kind of sucks, I hate Tucson, Phoenix is a pretty bad city to me, really spread out and the southside is crazy. Luckily i live in one of the nicer towns where im going to school.

Sharjah in the UAE
place is the worst shit hole ever. i went there pick up some things for work and omg the place smelled like ass, the town was so boring. Everything is illegal. like alcohol (even tho its in the middle east Dubai and Abu Dhabi have alcohol legal in at least hotels. but nope not this place), also no hookah? like wtf. All the appartments are above digusting shopping malls. So many channels on tv are canceled (like mtv alot of news channels are canceled idk why but they are basically in their own world). i met some famlies down there they have terrible morals. like kids cant have girl friends or even say any bad word or listen to any other music besides what their parents will give them because its against islam. to radical and just stupid. only gross grocery stores are open after 7pm and they dont care about anything there. they think they are the shit because the are 20 min away from Dubai but its a shit hole to the max. and im arab myself so i have been all around the middle east and this is the worst.
