View Full Version : Today's guys that practice MMA are a bunch of douches and meatheads

I've grew up taking traditional martial arts and competed from 86-97. I've taken Arnis/Kali to Kenpo Karate and even won a state light contact LW. Don't really train much anymore but I've been around some clubs and trained. I see the variance of MMA today and take what I can learn.
Today's guys however have taken it to a whole different level attitude-wise. Back in my day the first thing you are taught is discipline. Although clubs today teach that to somewhat of a degree, I don't really see these guys practice it outside the club. It's given guys a pisspoor attitude and they abuse what they learn. It's become more of a trend than a way of life. For someone who's practiced it for years, you can tell the difference.
I was at the gym the other day and was in the change room. Three guys, considerably bigger than I am were in the room with me. These guys were being obnoxious. They were goofing around with eachother abotu kicking eachother's asses. They were barking stuff like:
" I will pass your gaurd and teabag your face."
" I'd submit you to the point your rash on you sack would disappear."
Stupid shyt like that. Haha, yeah you guys are funny. We get it, you guys take MMA.
Then they started barkin about their weekend and how they got into it with guys and laughed about how they forgot how it started, and how they broke some dudes arm and the others pussied out.
I was thinkin, not only do you sound like dumbasses and trying to show your manhood in a gym changeroom, where is your discipline? It's obvious that these guys are into it because it's a trendy thing to do now, not only that, they are using as a means to prove their manhood.
This makes me sick. I was really close to sayin, you guys wanna give it a go? I'd school you in a ring. Honestly, I think if there are any MMA clubs out there they should make it that you have to achieve a black belt in some sort of traditional MA. Graduate into and MMA environment. They shouldn't let any douchebag UFC wannabe be able to walk in and start training. Todays clubs are jokes.

There are dudes at the gym I go to that show up with their protein shakes and lift in UFC shirts with sleeves ripped off and it always makes me laugh. They look in the mirror and practice some of their "moves" in between sets. They just look like clowns.

Lol, I hear you. It's like they want to be seen as a part of that culture. Everyone around them has to know they kick ass. Meanwhile lil ol me minding my biz in the corner would probably destroy them in a ring. If they had an image of douche on google, they would be it.

Yeah that does suck. I always imagined guys who train MMA to have more discipline, and respect. If I was you I would actually go and school them in the ring, they'll instantly start respecting you. Then you can lead by example... dunno, in a perfect world maybe?

Yeah I wanted to get back into martial arts because I enjoyed the self discipline and the sort of mental aspect. The art part. Taekwondo was hard because much is expected from you in way of discipline, but it was fun.
But I was looking around town and they're all like MMA clubs now... :facepalm
i blame the sport itself. mma is booming and there's a gagload of fighters looking to cash in.

I dont wear a UFC shirt or cut offs but this is a reason i dont want to join a gym because when i work out it makes feel like a fighter so i practice my hooks, high kicks and jabs pretending iam in a actual fight after iam done i was think thank god nobody sees me work out because i would have looked like a douche:oldlol:
But ya i agree with hateraid i know there are alot of people who "train" mma because they want to brag about it.

Yeah the MMA fad is everywhere and has been for a while, I remember in high school as well the new popular trend for kids who want to be badass is to tell all the other kids that they do MMA in their spare time, and they wear (wrongly-wrapped) handwraps to school and talk about UFC all the time, as well as jumping on the brock lesnar bandwagon. So MMA douches exist at every level..

The good guys are the ones who've trained in a traditional martial art and evolved into MMA. Bit they remain purists at the same time. I have a buddy who's ranked in the world at Muay Tai. He hates MMA. He actually calls it Man on Man Action. But in order for his club to thrive he knows he has to integrate. But he stays true to his art and doesn't flaunt it in public. He'd probably give all 3 of those dudes in the changeroom a good asskickin

You do realize that a large % of fighters now are former wrestlers? And those meathead/bros are these types? You aren't going to get a lot of disciplined martial artists as you will former wrestlers who are learning standup and BJJ.

Shouldn't judge all by one gym, I go to a BJJ/kickboxing/wrestling academy that focus on grappling comp but also churns out some MMA fighters and they're the nicest bunch of athletes I've ever been around. The douchebaggery of high school basketball was waaaaaaaaaaay ahead of anything anyone on the team does. Always go out of their way to help the new guy, respectful and don't talk trash, no one brags about mixing it up in the street, most of the dudes don't even curse around the instructors.

Depends on where you train. There are some good BJJ/MMA places in my area... and there are places filled with douchebags. I currently train at a more family oriented BJJ dojo, and everyone there is pretty chill. My last gym was more Kickboxing/MMA oriented, and I thought most the people and trainers there were douches... but it was still a good place to learn because there was a lot of talent there.

Play beach volleyball with Sam Stout in the summer. He's not an a-hole at all. He takes verbal abuse like a sport and just acts like one of the guys and laughs it off. Now if you physically confront him....that might be a different story. lol

Come on Hateraid, there has always been douchebags in TMAs and MMA. It's not a new trend at all. You think all those McDojos focus on discipline? Hell no, they just care about taking people's money. Not all the wrestling guys are douchebag Koscheck-wannabes, either. In my experience, most of the douchebags/meatheads actually came from TMAs. They thought they were badass because they had a black/brown belt. They were the 'nobody can mess with me' type. Though, I did take TKD and nobody from there was a douchebag. Actually, now that I think about, I might even say boxers were even bigger assholes. Granted, MMA didn't get big until I was out of school, so if I were younger then maybe I would have a different perspective.

that's cause Sam Stout actually trains and competes. Most of the douches you see around gym are just UFC fans who started following mma after the ultimate fighter and the sport became popular. They are ignorant and are hated by most die hard fans of the sport. the dude below exemplifies them as a group.

Shockingly enough most of the MMA douches I've met are Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu guys. You'd think BJJ would draw a different type of kat.

Honestly most people don't look at you weird at all... if you are clearly working in form training or shadow boxing in between sets. If you start making noise and just trying to draw attention to yourself then you get the MMA douche label.

I don't live in a huge city so it might be why but this whole "MMA" era has done wonders for me personally. Nothing better than a dude who tries to wrestle when they really have no idea what there doing and it's a street fight. 99% of the dudes I've encountered who are into that stuff love to try and pull it usually have no idea what there doing.
Might not be the thread but would love to state that anybody who loves to train for this stuff and likes to use it OUTSIDE of the gym makes guy's like me(smaller who'd rather duke it out fist to fist) life's about 10x easier. Nothing better than someone's who's been practicing for that stuff and tries to use it outside of the gym.
Coming from a dude who's about 140 and 8\10 most likely get's sent to the ground. 2\10 being the guy's who try and play Karate kid :oldlol:

I have to agree with this thread. In the early days of UFC/MMA, there was a very strong martial arts element to it. Now its largely just 2 meatheads beating the snot out of each other.
MMA is the new World's Gym.

In martial arts, aren't we taught to run away and avoid fights?
True martial artist story would end with: "I was able to defend myself and get away" or "I subdued him until the police came."

Training in any MA makes a number of people cocky and arrogant. Mix in some alcohol and/or that person not wanting to look bad in front of their friends and that equals that person acting like a meathead.

Nice, great Cobra Kai plug.
There was a difference back then and today. Obviously guys like you and me with a TMA background and people we trained with were more level headed outside of the club. Sure, there were the bullies with the black belts but they used there aggression more to intimedate and earn respect through force, and that they did. They were more assholes with agendas, but at least they were scary and accomplished what they sought out for.
The difference nowadays is that the meatheads that are exposed to it walk in wanting to learn how to fight, not to learn the art. They walk in meatheads and they walk out meatheads. The guys who had strong TMA/Style specific backgrounds tend to be the more level headed people in MMA.
There is a difference in attitude as well between yesteryears bullies and todays meatheads. Back then the at least they gained a sense of respect through scare tactics. Today people have no respect for them at all.
The club I want to get back into and enrole my son in does MMA, but you need to achieve black belt status and it's closed off to the rest off the students. It's a form of Kenpo that incorperates BJJ, Hawaiian style wrestling, Muay Tai and such. But you have to earn your blackbelt first. I think through that method you learn the discipline first. It actually can make you a better, more responsible fighter when you get to the MMA part.

Isn't everything a fad?
And MMA is not a sport. It's a combination of martial arts. It just so happens that BJJ has a strong hold on the sport seeing how it originated from Brazil.
Hopefully that'll change, but I doubt it. That's why Pride's product was so much better than UFC's. Boxing ring that promotes less running away, more confrontation and less cage hugging. Judging was a lot better too.

the biggest problem I have with the douche portion of people who follow and practice MMA is that they seem to be overly aggressive and always looking for a reason to fight.
at least with something like a douche Hipster, Hippy or whatever other sub culture there is, you know most usual negative responses are not going to include a dude bowing up and challenging you to a fight.
of course, there were a lot of dudes like the current trendy MMA people doing martial arts in the 80s that were the same style of aggressive asshole.

Another difference is that there are a bunch more McDojos out there now. They don't really care about the honor, respect, discipline, etc... side of it, they just care about making money. They're also lenient handing out belts.

That's probably because they go to classes for a couple weeks and then they think they're Anderson Silva or GSP. It's kind of like some people who join the military. They go through training, come out and then think they're Rambo or John Matrix from Commando.

I've definitely seen the sort of stuff you are talking about, but never at an actual MMA gym, in terms of the majority. Yeah, there are definitely assholes, but there will be wherever you go and in any environment (whether MMA, another sport, or some traditional career field). The vast majority of guys that I have trained with (I've only trained at 4 different gyms) are extremely nice and supportive guys. Mostly everybody is there to make themselves better and also help you get better.
When you are testing for your blue belt in BJJ, helping you train before you have to go take your test. Then when you get it, ceremoniously and jokingly beating you with their belts as you go to get yours. They are genuinely happy for you and you create a kind of bond with them.
Yeah, you are going to have those tools who are in their affliction shirts and poser UFC shirts (not all are, but a lot of the types you are describing fit this mold). And those guys typically don't last in the gyms, from what I have seen. They are not dedicated to the sport/art. They are simply there to learn a few cool moves to show their buddies or (in the case you witnessed) to show somebody 'who's boss'. They don't respect the sport, the reason for it, the training, or the value of the knowledge they have gained and when it is appropriate to use it.
But again, those dudes typically don't last in gyms. The trainers there don't want to waste their time training some asshole and they typically weed them out by either kicking them out, working them to death and even more harshly than normal, or simply embarrassing them and revealing how much of a 'tough' guy they really aren't.
It also depends on whether it is a MMA gym, Dojo for one specific discipline, or a boxing training center. Then it depends on who is running it. There are so many jokes for dojos out there- like 'John's Karate Kick Center!' and lame shit like that, where it is more designed to entertain kids, have fun, and run around for a couple of hours. Now, those can still teach values and such, but you really don't feel the weight of it compared to a traditional and very serious dojo (I have been a part of both growing up). With MMA, it's different, but similar, in that it depends on the quality of the training staff, where they're from, how they were brought into the sport, etc.
I was into the sport big time for several years (4 or 5), but in the last year or so, I haven't really kept up with it (aside from watching the UFCs and various other, smaller events), much less trained. It's definitely a lot of fun and challenging. If you have good people, who are willing to teach you and know how to drive you and push you to your best, then it is completely worth it. I've just been so focused on volleyball in the last year, along with school, work, and free time. I tried going to a club thing at the school here, but I ended up flaking out after a month or two because I focused on vball primarily.

For years (from 11th grade to present) I only played beach vball, for fun. Got pretty good at it (won a B-level tourny with some friends, really easily, but not good enough for A-level).
Then, last semester (Spring '10), I joined the volleyball club and tried out for the club team, which is indoor. So for the last 7-8 months, I have pretty much just played indoor, aside from beach whenever I could. It's definitely different and I prob prefer beach. I never had fundamental, basic volleyball training, so it's fun to actually learn and be taught correct form and where you should be on the court (aside from just instinct, like before) depending on the placement of the ball, etc.
It's definitely a fun sport.
