View Full Version : The best basketball cities in the NBA......

I am ranking them based on how the NBA is in each vs. other major sports...franchise history...and crowd passion etc.
1. LA
Now before you talk about the Hollywood vibe etc. that sits on the floor seats.
The Lakers have many passionate fans in the upper levels. And the Lakers are the hottest ticket in town that just happens to be the 2nd biggest market in the USA. Lakers have a storied franchise History in LA and have constantly been a great product to watch through out the years.
I'll add this for the Clippers as well now....Blake Griffen is a beast and has a great future.
2. New York
The Mecca of basketball. This only gives them the number 2 spot.
All the best players love playing at Madison Square. Not the best franchise history but NY loves their Knicks. And now that the Nets are coming to Brooklyn with their rich Russian owner...sky's the limit.
3. Chicago
Jordan...enough said.
4. Boston
I would rank them higher Boston is a great sports town...but to me it is a Red Sox and Pats town first. Even though the Celtics have a richer history then both of those other franchises. 9 championships in a row...17 in all. All the great players that played there.
5. S.A.
They broke in the top 5 as the only small market team. Rich B-ball history in the lone star state. The Spurs have been doing it since the ABA days. Duncan has brought four rings to this franchise and at the moment still has them as contenders for another run.
6. Philly
7. Golden State (Bay Area)
8. Indianapolis (Hoosier State!)
9. Salt Lake City
10. Sacramento

L.A does not have the best fans get out of here, they are quiet as hell. Boston Celtics are hands down first. I went to a close game vs Orlando Magic last year, and the crowd was so loud the frigging walls were shaking.

List is ok until you mention San Antonio, or having LA as number 1. No one should ever be ranked over NYC. And that is known. Do they have a great team in the Spurs? Sure. But it still isn't a basketball city. And when someone says that, I think it extends way past just how good or passionate some NBA fans are ... it's about basketball talent from the region, how many people play it, etc.
1) New York
2) Chicago
3) LA
4) Philly
5) Boston / Indiana

As much as I'd like us to be #1, there's simply no way we breed the ballers NYC, Philly, and Chicago do. Heck the east coast in general.
I used to live in LA and I'v been to a lot of Lakers games and its embarrasingly quiet. Best I would say is probably Boston.

And Wilt Chamberlain ... but I mean LA or the California region more so than Hollywood has produced some great talents.
Paul Pierce, Baron Davis ... just to name a couple.
But yeah, no way is LA ranked as the number 1 basketball city. Talk about ignorance.

NY is #1 by far.
The most passionate fans on the planet. We still pay homage to ROLE PLAYERS from the 90s lol.
It's the city's game, it's played on every street corner.
The past couple of seasons we've become fed up, but rightfully so. Anybody would get angry after 10 years of ineptitude where not even 1 decision was made correctly, and all hope was lost when we traded all our picks.
I digress... NY #1

Yea but Golden State always manages to draft great, exciting players: Jason Richardson, Gilbert Arenas, Monta Ellis, Latrell Sprewell, Stephen Curry, etc.
They have great scouts so its easy to see why fans tune in to watch

It's still a basketball city. And the fan base for the Pacers have been shaky at best because they have been irrelevant since 2004 / 2005-ish. Before that they were very supportive. Hard to support a boring, losing product.

The Raptors were ninth in attendance in 2008.
Their record? 33-49.
10th in the league in 2003.
Record? 24-58.
I'm not knocking the pacers, usually attendance decreases when you team is bad or below average.

New York
Chicago
Boston
LA
PHILA
And eventually OKC once they've had the team long enough to be considered.

Maybe you can say they have an advantage being the only Canadian team and being 3 times the size of Indy, but that still doesn't guarantee anything. Toronto's fanbase is great.

Oh and I wouldn't say LA fans are quiet, 98% of real fans are in the nosebleeds and they are loud as hell, you just can't hear it. Lakers tickets are ridiculously expensive and true fans can't afford the lower seats, its mostly all the celebs down there who are quiet. I guess it's also cause we're just so used to winning. ;)

Unless we're good, during the 2000 season, the few games I was at, it was louder than the RCA Dome. The Jordan return to Indy was also exceptionally loud. Granted, thats a few rare instances.
However, if you really want to hear loud, come down to Bloomington for a big game... Assembly is basically like a soundstage made into a basketball stadium.

I'd say all the Northern big cities and LA/Bay Area are the best basketball cities. The fact is that basketball is a big city game.
If I had to rank them:
1) NYC - It's the biggest city and basketball is the game of the city. They have all the historic streetball venues and produce a ton of NBA talent.
2) LA - Lakers are the clear cut #1 team in LA. You can't say the same for the Celtics, Bulls and other big city teams. Plus they have perhaps the most legendary basketball college in UCLA.
3) Chicago - Great fan support and have a ton of talent coming out of here.
It gets pretty tough from here on out.
4) Philly
5) DC
I don't really know about Indianapolis. I'd say Indiana is a basketball state, but Indianapolis isn't really a basketball city, the love is spread around.
And Boston doesn't produce a lot of talent; they just like to support their team.

I think what killed the Pacer's fanbase is a mixture of losing and the image they were producing in 2004/2005. The thug image and the palace brawl really detracted a lot of fans. However, now that they revamped their image and if they make the playoffs this year, hopefully more fans will start to show even if we are mediocre.

I stated that these are the three area's that I am ranking each city...but maybe a fourth should be NBA talent coming out of those cities as well (as others already pointed out).
With that in to play I probably will remake my list again as well.

For 41 years Seattle was one of the NBA's best cities until David Stern gave it away to that truck stop known as Oklahoma City. With decisions like this, it's no wonder the NBA is losing $450 million a year.

buying foreclosures
Submit a reasonable offer - Finally submit a reasonable offer to the bank after making a fair estimation of the price of the property by enquiring about the market value of comparable houses in the vicinity.
During the housing boom many home buyers with weak credit took out exotic mortgages such as adjustable-rate loans, which have payments that reset when interest rates rise. Now that interest rates have risen

This will probably be seen as homerism but I'd say Chicago is number one for the simple fact that the Bulls were selling out the arena even when the team sucked. Most Bulls fans may have started with the Jordan-era but those fans never went anywhere. Generally speaking, Boston fans where nowhere to be found until the team got KG a few years ago and became legit contenders again. Then all of a sudden, once dormant Celtics fans started coming out of the wood-works. Here's how I'd rank em'.
1. Chicago
2. New York
3. Boston
4. L.A.
5. ????
SinJackal

LA can't be #1. They barely give a shit about their teams. They don't sell out their games when they suck either.
Chicago fans show up and sell out the arena even when the team sucks. How is Chicago not #1? NY should be up there too, but imo is still below Chicago. Chicago has the records for highest rated finals, and is always among the tops in the NBA for tickets sold every season even when they're bad.

Technically, a larger percentage of the populous in SA views the Spurs than any other city does their team for the NBA (In terms of local ratings %). So if you go to SA, odds are most people you meet will be Spurs fans. If that doesn't make it a good basketball city, then what does? More national ratings? That doesn't make any sense. That makes those teams better nationally loved franchises, and has nothing to do with the cities they're based in.

U sure do love using the word fluke. OKC so far has done a great job supporting It's team. They did a good job when the Hornets where there. Look at Miami...they get LeBron and Bosh and still don't have fans show up on time. It's Miami though...plenty of other things to do and that's the problem.
Oh and last nights Heat win....FLUKE! Hope to see u guys in the Finals if they make it out of the East.

Phoenix is underrated. For decades, the Suns were the only pro team in PHX and the fans were really hardcore.
Now there's the Cardinals, D-Backs, Coyotes, etc.. and I think a lot of people overlook how Phoenix is a basketball first city. Sure, the Cardinals have been making a huge surge ever since they got a new stadium.. but Phoenix is still a b-ball city at heart.

NY is the mecca of basketball because of a building and a park?
Bulls are the number one team in attendance.
Chicago fans travel and represent, evidenced by Rose getting MVP chants on the road multiple times.
Chicago puts out more quality players than any other city.
Illinois teams like the Illini, Whitney Young, Simeon, Peoria Manual, etc play just as good or better than amature ball than is played in NY....we produce better guards than NY which was supposed to be their claim to fame.
The old Chicago Stadium was the loudest building in the NBA maybe ever.
We have 6 titles.

Another myth.
Chicago owns NY in basketball.
NY used to put out the best talent but for the past ten years Chicago has produced way more talent than NY.
LA has better HS ball, the surrounding areas has better college ball, and pro ball need not be mentioned.
