View Full Version : Ugly Floor Paint in the 90's

Think of the old Charlotte and San Antonio floors. Ugly colors and huge painted areas other than the lane were popular in the 90's. More examples, and especially photos, are welcome.

The pink and light blue in the old Spurs design :facepalm

Also, the current Clippers floor (specifically underneath the baskets) looks like the old school Kings floor. Same color scheme and layout.

I really hated those. Just made the NBA look like some tacky prime-time sitcom.

Not like those at all. This is proper. Wooden floors and simple team colors. Teams like the spurs had fail gradients with disgusting color combinations.

That was the Alamodome (which isn't the first arena the Spurs played), which is more in tune for a football team. The place is just too big for a pro basketball team to play every year (something like the Final Four, and other competitions, is different). They could be using the place better. So the SBC center was built (now the AT&T center)...

As for the old school Spurs colors, growing up I saw them so often - and they are Fiesta inspired which is very big in this city - I got used to them. That color scheme was so "Nineties". I got alot of old Spurs stuff, shirts, cups, etc, etc. I do agree though, that color scheme was kind of ugly... The jerseys have always been sweet though.

Exactly. I hate the "paint outside the paint" concept. It's just a retarded idea, that doesn't deserve any respect.

The Hornets one was sick when it had the inverted paint/3 point line colors, at one point they even had honeycomb painted in the paint.

Shit was awesome.

Is that 'Toine in the 15th row looking for a pass?

Spurs hands down had the worst, but the Rockets picture reminds me of how awful the NBA got in the 90's with logos + team colors (Raptors/Grizzlies must have had ugly courts early on). Stern must have hired a bunch of marketing people from Disney during that time.

I have actually enjoyed the Raptors court a lot, they seem to normally balance out colors well with a good logo at centercourt. Classy, but still interesting.

The newer claw logo sure, but the original dino logo was so awful, all the new logos and teams during that time were way too cartoon-like.

I guess it worked though - plenty of fans started watching ball during that time in their youth.

How about the fact that a team even came about named THE RAPTORS? The '90's were a wild time. The dinosaur/Jurassic Park craze was huge (I was in elementary school when that shit blew up and I was disgustingly obsessed with it) but enough to keep it in mind while naming a team? Yikes.

Spurs are the first organization I though of when I saw the thread. Ghastly. The Sonics court was quite garish as well.

And I've always despised the Heat's home court.

Those courts were inspired by the trend that was happening in the NCAA at the time. A lot of college teams had their courts designed the same way and the NBA brought that idea to the league and were trying to do something different to draw more fans in.

The courts I liked were hornets and raptors. Atlanta tried it but it didn't look right and Houston with the stars on the painted area outside the lane was just weird. I'm glad the Bulls didn't do it.

I'm with you there. All those crazy courts were awesome. The honeycomb, the Rocket blasting off into freaking space, the Raptors' triangular wood design. . .pure awesome. I actually have a little trouble playing against the Spurs on 2K11 (and watching them at home in real life) because their court, arena and jerseys seems so dark, bland, and boring. I loved their scheme before.

Link to the original Raptors court (picture took up too much of page):
http://ezed54.com/Raptors%20Inaugural%20Game003.jpg

By the by, I watched the new Pistons logo reveal episode on PASS sports back in the 90's. I thought the horse and the new colors (including turquoise and burgondy) were the coolest things ever invented. I even wrote a report on them for school. That feelign lasted approximately 1.87 years. By then I yearned for the red, white, and blue.

You guys can say what you want about Joe Dumars as a GM, but you can never take away his role in returning the Pistons back to uniform normalcy.

Without an actual half-court line, it's sure provided plenty of over and backs which as a Ducks fan is more than welcome. On TV the court isn't the greatest,

In person, it's more subtle than you would think. But Nike needs to go back and redesign a few things.
