Judge:

Welcome to Nation State Draft 2. This draft will be very similar to the first one but with a few additions and changes. In this draft, just like the last one, each contestant will choose NINE individuals to found their nation with an emphasis on structure and coherence.

http://theyoungamerican.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/founding-fathers1.jpg

HOWEVER, the difference between this draft and the last is the end game. Implementing a suggestion by our last winner Jasi, this is how your nations will be tested.

First, the Judge (or me, if no one wants to be judge) will rank all eight nations based on the following criteria:

1. Citizen Happiness Index (Are your citizens satisfied?)
2. Defense (How will you survive around warmongering neighbors?)
3. Economy (Free market? Mercantilist? Centrally planned?)
4. Political Stability (Are your individuals backstabbers or team players?)
5. Human Rights (Self Explanatory)

Then, a tournament will take place pitting the top seeds against the bottom seeds in a single elimination match. The advantage of being a top seed is you can pick whether your nations will:

1. Go to war with each other
2. Send a delegation to a visiting alien council to try and achieve most favored nation status against your opponent.

The strategy behind this is that if you decide to build a military powerhouse, you will probably get ranked lower and never get to go to war. And of course your generals are far less effective in diplomatic negotiations. On the other hand, if you pick only hippie artists and philosophers who might have great works of art and literature to influence the aliens, you might lose out to an equally talented nation who has military talent.

http://www.roundtheworld.in/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/world-map.jpg

You still get a chance to draft a geographical country based on current country locations to start your nation. You can now choose any mixture of TWO natural landmarks (Niagra Falls, Mount Everest) or natural resources (diamonds, oil) to present to the alien nation during your tournament. Everyone still gets equal population.

Similar to the music draft, you can let your creative juices flow as to how you want to structure your government. Every single human being born is free to be chosen.

Overall just have fun and check the thread often, this stuff depends on everyone remaining active.

Standard snake draft formula. 12 Hours wait time for the first round and 8 Hours after that. If you don't show for the first round you might get replaced. PM me picks if you think you won't be able to make it for the time limit and if I don't pick before you.

A picture and short explanation is strongly recommended. At least for the first few rounds.

I'd completely forgotten just how off the reservation sergio went. Made good fodder but was also kind of annoying, especially when other people started stocking up on warmongers as well.

After skimming that thread I have to get in here. I passed up on a lot of my favorite historical figures in favor of a collection of big names and as a result found myself not knowing how to put things together in the end. Although I did pick Richard freaking Sorge which should have gotten me the win by default.

It shouldn't be hard to fill with legit posters, there were plenty of people lurking in there last time. What's your excuse, booze?

Is there another post with some detail about what people were thinking with the whole alien thing?

I mean, are these manifest-themselves-as-your-dead-father aliens that give warm hugs or squid-like beasts that strangle Data in a labroom aliens? I really just want to know if I should pick Jeff Goldblum or not. He'll probably be around for a while, so seeing as how I have the first pick I really can't not pick the goat politicker...

Thomas Jefferson - no picture, iphowned

Not a lot to say here, his pen could cut straight through the bullshit to the true nature of a man and make him feel more human. Although in theory a minimalist and proponent of person freedom above all, he was not without flexibility and as a president was willing to step on the stupid parts of the constitution when necessary. While he'll no doubt spend the majority of his time withdrawn from government affairs, pacing around gardens or founding universities, when the shit goes down inside my government I want TJ in the room to remind everybody what they're actually doing there.

Jasi
12-20-2010, 10:41 AM
@Abd, I think that in this game the aliens are not hostile per se, but they are more powerful than any nation of the Earth (well, they did get here so they must be), so each nation will try to obtain their friendship. Vapid have I got it right?

Pick 1.2, I select Catherine II, the Great as my Head of State.
The greatest Tsarina, Empress of Russia from 1762 to 1796.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/1f/Cath2russia.jpg/453px-Cath2russia.jpg

Under her direct auspices the Russian Empire expanded, improved its administration, and continued to modernize. Catherine's rule re-vitalized Russia, which grew stronger than ever and became recognized as one of the great powers of Europe. She had successes in foreign policy.

Jasi
12-20-2010, 10:49 AM
Vapid can you clarify the point about natural landmarks and resources?
Is that a pick itself? Or should one pick them while picking the nation?

E.g. "I pick nation A with its natural landmark X and its natural resource Y"?
Or "I pick nation A with its two natural landmarks W and Z and its two natural resources J and K"?

Aliens: yes more powerful than any earth civ, wont get intimidated by military might, impartial, rational.

Landmarks: you can choose later during matchups ( so you can switch them up depending on opponen.)

Sounds good. With a draft this small I have a good shot of still getting the guy(s) (still haven't decided) I want later in the round.

Surprised that so many countries are going this early.

The reason I chose the US is because I had no historical figure that I considered central to my plan. Plus it is such a versatile landscape with historical places, natural wonders, fertile farmland, and plenty of natural resources. Most of the guys I have on my list probably won't be picked by the time I get my second choice.

Australia http://www.power-technology.com/projects/callide-coal/images/3-energy-resources.jpg

Easily defensible country, rich in rare uranium, gold, other precious metals, natural gas, has two of the greatest natural landmarks in Ayers Rock and the Great Barrier Reef.

second pick:

Caesar Augustus

I was tempted to go with my favorite dude again but I thought I'd mix it up a little. Ok its been over 8 hours since BJ picked so I can make my selection.

Wasn't planning on selecting him but at this point I can't pass up Napoleon Bonaparte to be my leader.

http://www.napoleonguide.com/images/napgal_alps.jpg

Not much I can say that's not obvious. Strong leader and military strategist that I will surround with the necessary pieces to balance his strengths and weaknesses. I'm very happy with the USA and Napoleon as my first two picks.

With my 3rd round pick, I select Klemens von Metternich.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/49/Prince_Metternich_by_Lawrence.jpeg

Probably GOAT diplomat, he will be in charge of Foreign Affairs.

He was a major figure in the negotiations before and during the Congress of Vienna and is considered both a paragon of foreign-policy management and a major figure in the development of diplomatic praxis. He was the archetypal practitioner of 19th-century diplomatic realism, being deeply rooted in the postulates of the balance of power.

Kind of why I don't really get the alien thing. IMO it's impossible to predict what an alien lifeform would find of value on Earth, if there is anything at all. Seems like if one option is war, the other should be virtue, collective morality, or whatever.

Jailblazers7

I don't get the Alien thing either. Why would aliens care about natural wonders? They're either here to
1-Take you resources
2-Make first contact
3-Turn us into zombie pets
I don't see where natural landmarks fit into those options.

I think we've already established that the aliens are benevolent and natural landmarks are something that make a nation more appealing. As an impartial judge, would a country like America with Niagra Falls, the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone etc. be more appealing than Afganistan?

Mexico is the fifth-largest country in the Americas by total area and the 14th largest independent nation in the world. With an estimated population of 111 million,[13] it is the 11th most populous country and the most populous Hispanophone country on Earth. Mexico is a federation comprising thirty-one states and a Federal District, the capital city.

Mexico is now both one of the world's largest economies and one of the fastest growing economies in the world, with a stable growth rate of 7.6%.[14][15] As a regional power,[16][17] and since 1994 the first Latin American member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Mexico was firmly established as an upper middle-income country,[18] and in 2009 Mexico surpassed the world bank's high income economic threshold to become a high income country.[19] Mexico is considered a newly industrialized country[20][21][22][23] and an emerging power.[24] It has the 13th largest nominal GDP and the 11th largest by purchasing power parity. The economy is strongly linked to those of its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners, especially the United States,[25][26] as well as tourism, being the world's tenth most visited country with over 21.4 million international arrivals.[27] Mexico boasts a long tradition in the arts, renowned cuisine, and culture, and it ranks fifth in the world and first in the Americas on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites with 31.[28][29][30]

At the height of Morgan's career during the early 1900s, he and his partners had financial investments in many large corporations and was accused by critics of controlling the nation's high finance. He directed the banking coalition that stopped the Panic of 1907. He was the leading financier of the Progressive Era, and his dedication to efficiency and modernization helped transform American business. Morgan redefined conservatism in terms of financial prowess coupled with strong commitments to religion and high culture.[1]

He will be part of the team that advises Napoleon on economic and commercial legilastion while also being head of the National Bank.

So far this is what I see. I'd like to say first however, I am not a history major, I'm probably way off but this is just how I see it. feel free to teach me my bad habbits, thats why I love this draft so much. I really enjoy learning and re learning about some of histories most famous people.

ABD:

Thomas Jeff, Strong as stong can be for a leader.

Sun Tzo, Doesn't have to lead any actual armies but an ace to have for war strategies from what would be the equivlent to a 5 star general overseeing a whole war not just a battle. I like it.

Canada, I had them in the last draft, I got nothing bad to say about that spot.

Overall, I see a good squad and waiting to see your 4th pick. I caution you, you and I have a crazy USA between us led by Napolean. I'd say we keep some back channel communications open.

Jasi:

Man I have no idea, you could be hitting a homerun or a foul ball right now. I am not familiar with those people, that's why I do this draft though. I really like learning about all of these historical people. So thank you for adding more people to my people to look up list, but I am not qualified to judge this squad.

Rizko: Frederick II, strong leader but I wonder how he and Bismarck will get a long.

Bismarch, Strong pick again, he'll probably be your sec of state I guess or something like that. I wonder would he not want the top spot. I hate to even bring up would this person like this person stuff because I wonder how anyones would actually get along it's all subjective to Vapids opinion anyhow :D Mine I'm sure will be nit picked also.

China, Awesome pick outside of USA and about equal to Ausi IMO (for different reasons) I wondered if I should have picked it for awhile but I was thinking of going somewhere else more remote then thought of everywhere else and it didn't take long for it to get snatched up.

Overall, you got time to build up and you got China to give you time to sort things out. You're right next to a Hannibal/Julius Caesar led Russia so have I think Otto would realize what needs to be done for the security of his country and keep good relations with Russia. Still I'd say be aware of who's building next to you. You're in a similar situation to ABD and I.

Magnax:

Russia, Not in my top 3 favorite places, but you can't deny Russia and it's natural defense make it an good choice.

Hannibal, Strong general I wonder the same thing about him and Julias as I do with Rizkos two guys. I think I wonder more about yours than his. I could be wrong but I think these guys would clash for some reason but I don't know why. So please take that with a grain of salt.

Julias, see above.

Overall, I'm interested in see what you do from here on out.

Black Joker:

Brazil, Another place I really liked and wish I had picked in hindsight.

Leonardo, he's a genius

Amartyr, sorry bud, I have no clue who this guy is but I will read up on him too.

George Washington, I wonder if you will make him a 4 year term president or if you're doing some kind of king/dictatorship. He was opposed to this in real life. Really looking forward to seeing how my neighbor to the South is building.

Overall, I got my eye on you, you got what looks like a great start to a country. I have you and Vapid at the top so far.

Jailblazers:

United States, I think it's easily the strongest place to start. Great pick up especially that you got the spot traded to you. That's value for your dollar right there.

Napolean, I think him in command of a United States caliber would be scary. Me thinks you'll be my most interesting neighbor.

Plato, when I think of philosophy Plato is one of the first people to pop in my head. Might just be the perfect ying to Napoleans yang.

JP Morgan: Saved America on his own dime once. Strong, powerful business man.

Overall, I think you have all the makings for a war machine.

DirtBag:

Won't comment on my own

Vapid:

Australia, Love its natural defense of being way the f*ck away from everybody.

Augustus, Love the pick especially with Ausi. Very fun for me to imagine how he'd be able to transform a place like Ausi.

Rockerfeller, The pimphand is strong in this Robber barron turned philanthropist. Nothing bad to say

Tesla, Genius

Overall, You and BJ are at the tops of my lists as already stated. I have you both just slightly beneath me :D

http://image.minyanville.com/assets/dailyfeed/uploadimage/110210/keynes_1288720897.jpg

"If you were going to turn to only one economist to understand the problems facing the economy, there is little doubt that the economist would be John Maynard Keynes. Although Keynes died more than a half-century ago, his diagnosis of recessions and depressions remains the foundation of modern macroeconomics. His insights go a long way toward explaining the challenges we now confront."

Keynes will be one of two persons forming the Council of Economic Advisors for our beloved Tsarina.

http://www.the-romans.co.uk/g9/04.trajan_small.jpg

Trajan - As far as Roman Emperors go he's not a sexy pick, but I'd argue he's as good of a pick as any. After rising to fame as a General and being given power by popular acclaim, he set about conquering long-time thorn in the side Dacia and prompty wrecked their shit. The victory left Trajan with a boatload of money and his own mini Pax-Romana during which he revitalized the city through public works projects on a scale of which hadn't been seen in 100 years, even launching a welfare program. Beloved by people and Senate alike for his humility and fairness, after additional campaigns in Greece and the East he had expanded the Empire to the greatest extent it would see. Healsobuiltagiantpenisandhadathingforlittleboys - but I guess that's part of what makes him the definitive Roman leader in my eyes. Ruled like Augustus, fought like Julius, and partied like Caligula.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_IoU3bEFUwWc/SWJ7fx99p5I/AAAAAAAAEZo/QAtMz7m0xgs/s400/Fritz+Haber.jpg

Fritz Haber - Nobel Award winning chemist responsible for creating the Haber process which allowed large scale production of ammonia via a bunch of scientific stuff I don't really understand. However, you don't need to a Chemistry degree to recognize that his innovation led to groundbreaking advances in fertilizer, and a century after its discovery the process is still used to feed a third of the world's population. He will be useful in Canada's chilly climate in keeping food on everyone's table. While Haber may have saved billions from starvation over the years, he was also integral in Germany's use of chemical weapons during WW1. And by integral I don't mean his research led to other guys making chemical weapons, the guy was creating the weapons, advocating their use, and overseeing their deployment. Hader was on the ground directing operations during the first widescale use of chlorine gas by the Germans, killing roughly 10,000 allied troops in a battle that cost his country just a few hundred. Provided countless other contributions to the scientific community, as well as to the German war machine.

Pauling is one of only four individuals to have won multiple Nobel Prizes.[3] He is one of only two people awarded two Nobel Prizes in different fields (the Chemistry and Peace prizes), the other being Marie Curie (the Chemistry and Physics prizes), and the only person awarded two unshared prizes.[4]

Winston Churchill http://cache2.allpostersimages.com/p/LRG/14/1433/QTER000Z/posters/winston-churchill.jpg- Visionary, unbelievable motivator, one of the best war-time politicians, and will be operating in a familiar island-nation situation. (except with much more land and resources) I think he is a good balance to Augustus.

Frederich von Hayek http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7f/Friedrich_Hayek_portrait.jpg - Austrian economics ftw!

Some color on my other guys:

Rockefeller http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/6f/John_D._Rockefeller_1885.jpg/220px-John_D._Rockefeller_1885.jpg- This man's unrivaled experience as an industrial emperor will be vital to this capitalistic economy, especially because his business was built upon taking advantage of natural resources. His philanthropy does not hurt either.

Jeremy Rifkin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Rifkin)

J. Robert Oppenheimer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Robert_Oppenheimer)

I chose Rifkin because of his practical use. Most of the other economic people seem to either be philosophers or singular business men. This guy is from a quick glance seems to have the most governmental experience

Oppenheimer was chosen in the the same vain. A guy like Tesla, while smart, was an eccentric and I have my doubts about where they would have the ability to actually lead a government run scientific program. Again a case of theoretical Knowledge vs. practical application.

Edit: Note I'm not trying to take down/insult others picks, just laying out my line of thinking.

Bismarch, Strong pick again, he'll probably be your sec of state I guess or something like that. I wonder would he not want the top spot. I hate to even bring up would this person like this person stuff because I wonder how anyones would actually get along it's all subjective to Vapids opinion anyhow Mine I'm sure will be nit picked also.
Bismark was pro-monarchist who believed in the divine right of a monarch. He should be fine in his role.

I'm not too well versed on different scientists. I just went with a guy I knew so I could catch up.

And Tesla in a lab with infinite money = perpetual energy for your nation in 6 months; a death ray in a year.

After reading about Simon Bolivar and Gran Columbia for the past few hours, I have to say that is by far the most interesting history I have never been taught before or even been taught. How different a world we would live in if we had a twin brother republic growing up with us over the past 200 years. I cannot believe I've never heard this before. I can't find any videos or much about it on the internet.

Im about to go sergio on this darft so I can rape and pillage vapids nation.

[QUOTE]Mises wrote and lectured extensively on behalf of classical liberalism and is seen as one of the leaders of the Austrian School of economics.[15] In his treatise on economics, Human Action, Mises introduced praxeology as a more general conceptual foundation of the social sciences and established that economic laws were only arrived at through the means of methodological individualism firmly rejecting positivism and materialism as a foundation for the social sciences. Many of his works, including Human Action, were on two related economic themes:

1.monetary economics and inflation;
2.the differences between government controlled economies and free markets.

Mises argued that money is demanded for its usefulness in purchasing other goods, rather than for its own sake and that any unsound credit expansion causes business cycles. His other notable contribution was his argument that socialism must fail economically because of the economic calculation problem

After more reading on Rifkin I've changed my mind and agree with Jailblazers that he would be better paired with a theorist. One guy to be the brains and the other to be the hand.

I'll take Friedrich Hayek. His theories fit in with Rifkin's so I see things running smoothly.

I pick Iraq.

Iraq has the common epithet, the "Cradle of Civilization", as it was home to the earliest known civilization on Earth, the Sumerian civilization, which arose in the fertile Tigris-Euphrates river valley of southern Iraq
Incidentally, we also have the third biggest oil reserves in the world.

Tim Berners-Lee - Invented HTML, and a few years later came up with the idea to use it for transmission of information over the internet in what would become known as the World Wide Web. Doesn't get anywhere near his due for his influence on the technology age. While the bigger names of the technology boom would have patented the shit out of the web and made trillions, Berners-Lee was adamant that the technology be freely available to anyone and has fought over the years to keep it that way and safe from influence of governments and corporations.

Milton Friedman - Seems to be a run on economists so I'll take this MF. He should get on brilliantly with TJ and fit well into my overall concept.

He's pretty epic. Always downplaying his role, too. Every time anybody tries to give the guy any props he basically shrugs and plays it off like right place right time, it would have happened anyway, etc. Dude has a serious problem taking compliments.

ARPANET and TCP were around for decades before he put his stamp on things and sent shit flying at ten million miles per hour. And if somebody isn't old enough to remember Gopher and its counterparts, they were massive piles of shit. As a web developer I feel like I should be paying the guy tribute so I thought a role with my imaginary nation would be a good start.

To steal more from Jasi's old team I'll take Kenneth Arrow.

Kenneth Joseph Arrow (born August 23, 1921) is an American economist and joint winner of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics with John Hicks in 1972. To date, he is the youngest person to have received this award, at 51.

In economics, he is considered an important figure in post-World War II neo-classical economic theory. Many of his former graduate students have gone on to win the Nobel Memorial Prize themselves. Ken Arrow's impact on the economics profession has been tremendous. For more than fifty years he has been one of the most influential of all practicing economists.

His most significant works are his contributions to social choice theory, notably "Arrow's impossibility theorem", and his work on general equilibrium analysis. He has also provided foundational work in many other areas of economics, including endogenous growth theory and the economics of information.

I need a healthy nation and he'll do. (I was looking for someone more original, but I didn't want to hold up the draft looking over leaders of different health organizations)

I'll do my make-up pick in a second.

Nelson Mandela:

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (Xhosa pronunciation: [xoˈliːɬaɬa manˈdeːla]; born 18 July 1918)[1] served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, and was the first South African president to be elected in a fully representative democratic election. Before his presidency, Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist, and the leader of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC). In 1962 he was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other charges, and sentenced to life in prison. Mandela served 27 years in prison, spending many of these years on Robben Island. Following his release from prison on 11 February 1990, Mandela led his party in the negotiations that led to multi-racial democracy in 1994. As president from 1994 to 1999, he frequently gave priority to reconciliation.

In South Africa, Mandela is often known as uTata Madiba, an honorary title adopted by elders of Mandela's clan.

Mandela has received more than 250 awards over four decades, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize.
He won't be the pres, but will work as a human rights activist. I see him as an adviser and judge type of guy with my nation.

Mencius
http://www.faculty.umb.edu/gary_zabel/Courses/Phil%20100-08/Taoism/Mencius_-_Project_Gutenberg_eText_15250-1.jpg

Mencius emphasized the significance of the common citizens in the state. While Confucianism generally regards rulers highly, he argued that it is acceptable for the subjects to overthrow or even kill a ruler who ignores the people's needs and rules harshly. This is because a ruler who does not rule justly is no longer a true ruler. Speaking of the overthrow of the wicked King Zhou of Shang, Mencius said, "I have merely heard of killing a villain Zhou, but I have not heard of murdering [him as] the ruler.".[10]

This saying should not be taken as an instigation to violence against authorities but as an application of Confucian philosophy to society. Confucianism requires a clarification of what may be reasonably expected in any given relationship. All relationships should be beneficial, but each has its own principle or inner logic. A Ruler must justify his position by acting benevolently before he can expect reciprocation from the people. In this view, a King is like a steward. Although Confucius admired Kings of great accomplishment, Mencius is clarifying the proper hierarchy of human society. Although a King has presumably higher status than a commoner, he is actually subordinate to the masses of people and the resources of society. Otherwise, there would be an implied disregard of the potential of human society heading into the future. One is significant only for what one gives, not for what one takes.

The Chief Justice of my Judicial system

http://bztv.typepad.com/instanthistory/images/1981__720__sandra_day_oconnor_1.jpg

Sandra Day O'Connor (born March 26, 1930) is an American jurist who was the first female member of the Supreme Court of the United States. She served as an Associate Justice from 1981 until her retirement from the Court in 2006. O'Connor was appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1981.[2] In the latter years of her tenure, she was regarded as the swing vote in many cases.

Prior to O'Connor's appointment to the Court, she was an elected official and judge in Arizona.[3] On July 1, 2005, she announced her intention to retire effective upon the confirmation of a successor.[4] President George W. Bush first unsuccessfully nominated Harriet Miers to replace O'Connor, then nominated Justice Samuel Alito to take her seat in October 2005, and he joined the Court on January 31, 2006.

O'Connor is Chancellor of The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and serves on the board of trustees of the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In 2001, the Ladies' Home Journal ranked her as the second-most-powerful woman in America.[5] In 2004 and 2005, Forbes magazine listed her as the sixth- and thirty-sixth-most-powerful woman in the world, respectively; the only American women preceding her on the 2004 list were then-National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice, then-U.S. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, and then-First Lady Laura Bush.[6] On August 12, 2009, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor of the United States, by President Barack Obama.

I obviously don't know for certain. His techniques would no doubt stream line the process and efficient;y reorganize the allocation of resources and at least make a significant impact. Even if this isn't conceded, considering the type of profits that he can generate in the business sector I'm happy with his value.

Kind of curious why three of the four economists taken in the draft are both of the "austrian" school. Most non-economics internet forummers seem to have a hard on for austrian economics that is always baffling to me. Is it just a reactionary response to the financial crisis or contrarian nature of posters, i'm not sure. And Austrian economists like Rothbard have actually made a lot of contributions towards the field but a lot of people who follow the school are dogmatic driven ideologues or just reallly really hate math

this is a good thread. Wish I participated.

In a rush but want to get these in...

Avicenna - Wrote Canon of Medicine, which was the definitive medical guide for physicians all over the world for nearly a millenia. Revolutionized understanding of contagious diseases, cancers, the importance of exercise, clinical trials, this could be a really long list. Also a noted philosopher, and everything else geniuses did 1,000 years ago.

Giacomo Casanova - Just because. I'll send him to Jasi's realm and be have Catherine on strings by the end of the week.

Jasi picks Paul Krugman via PM

Thanks vapid.

Krugman  is the second member of the Council of Economic Advisors of our beloved Tsarina.

According to the Nobel Prize Committee, the prize was given for Krugman's work explaining the patterns of international trade and the geographic concentration of wealth, by examining the impact of economies of scale and of consumer preferences for diverse goods and services. Krugman is known in academia for his work on international economics (including trade theory, economic geography, and international finance), liquidity traps and currency crises.

I think Sherman might have been a better choice for just adding another General. At least Russia would know that you'd have no problem burning down the battlefield in order to win. Hard to invade a place that is willing to burn themselves down to the ground.
I'm sure their were a lot of better generals. I just like Lee so I chose him. Thats always my problems with drafts. I get psyched for them at first, then get to the point where I have no clue who to draft so I go for guys I like more then anything really.

Edit: I also skipped over Sherman because Dasher drafted him in the last draft and I didn't want to just re-create his team with only a few changes.

Fair enough, just putting in my 2 cents. I just thought and laughed to myself how crazy a director of homeland security Sherman would have been. Great draft so far, wish I could have participated.

Thanks. I always like to get others opinions on the drafted team.

Here are the criteria for grading teams:

1. Citizen Happiness Index (Are your citizens satisfied?)
2. Defense (How will you survive around warmongering neighbors?)
3. Economy (Free market? Mercantilist? Centrally planned?)
4. Political Stability (Are your individuals backstabbers or team players?)
5. Human Rights (Self Explanatory)

You have Frederick and Napoleon. Two of the greatest military minds in history already. Adding Lee is going to cause you problems. You have enough to deal with having Napoleons ego for Frederick to deal with. You have Fredericks brilliance as a tactician and defense turning into offense type and you have Napoleon's aggressive tactics. I'd focus on another area of need. Looking at Magnax picks so far I don't think you have to fear Russia initially.

Ok then :lol

In that case good decision to get Robert E Lee. I think he was a brilliant defensive tactician who your troops will follow into hell if need be. With Frederick as your leader I think the people will have great pride in the nation. With Otto running the day to day affairs I think it leaves Frederick the needed time to whip the military machine into shape and instill proper discipline as well as leaves him the ability to oversee and help with a vision for the nation.

With Oppenheimer you're going to be one of the leaders in nuclear physics and science as a whole. You'll attract a lot of the leading minds in such fields.

Mandela would make an excellent foreign minister I think or act as a spiritual moral guide for the nation. He remains tremendously popular and respected around the world inspite of his leadership when he was the man in charge in South Africa.

Mendela will be the morale ying to more cold and calculating Yang of Bismarck.

I got him to boost my humans right score. Guy will make sure to look after the little people.

I think we will probably make this a 10 round draft which would give me 2 more picks. I was planning on using at least one for science/inventor guy, maybe another for an economic role.

I think I'd rather have Lee. Sherman's record is mixed against a foe with much inferior forces. After his advance towards Atlanta he did much better, but I still wouldn't take him over Lee who often times looked like a military genius.
Who's up now?

Yeh, Lee is the much better choice unless you're a war monger nation. If you are a nation that wants to be built around conquest and total war then you look at someone like Sherman. With that being said, you would need someone above Sherman. You don't want Sherman as your number 1 guy exactly because he waged total war unless you want to guarantee a lifetime of hatred and ill will against your rulership of any country he has gone through.

Robert Michael Gates (born September 25, 1943) is the 22nd and current United States Secretary of Defense. He took office on December 18, 2006.[2] Prior to this, Gates served for 26 years in the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Council, and under President George H. W. Bush as Director of Central Intelligence. Immediately after being recruited by the CIA, he served as an officer in the United States Air Force.[3][4] After leaving the CIA, Gates became president of Texas A&M University and was a member of several corporate boards. Gates also served as a member of the Iraq Study Group, the bipartisan commission co-chaired by James A. Baker III and Lee Hamilton, that has studied the Iraq War. He was also the first pick to serve as the first Director of National Intelligence (DNI), but he declined the appointment in order to remain President of Texas A&M University.[5]
Gates accepted the nomination for Secretary of Defense on November 8, 2006, replacing Donald Rumsfeld. He was confirmed with bipartisan support.[6] In a 2007 profile written by former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski, Time named Gates one of the year's most influential people.[6] In 2008, Gates was named one of America's Best Leaders by U.S. News & World Report.[7] He continues to serve as Secretary of Defense in President Barack Obama's cabinet.[8]
