Since every other person and their dog here seem to have claimed to have called Kevin Martin, here's an oppurtunity to call someone right.
Pick a below average person whom you feel has unseen potential and is due to blow-up. Somebody that very little of you could have seen stardom out of. Some who also doesn't carry alot of hype baggage (lottery picks would seem like out of the question). I will document this and bump it up in the distant future.

I'm calling it right here- Luther Head and Tony Allen

Future potential and soon to be a household name- Dequan Cook (I'm a fan of his since his junior year in high school)

I was gonna say that too ced. This guy was regarded as better than Monta in High School by some scouts.

I've seen a little of him in the NBA, but I think he has the potential to be better than Monta Ellis.

He is learning from the master everyday in practice, and has a great vet in Ollie mentoring him as well.

I know he's not really under the radar, but Jose Calderon has looked great for the Raps this year. He's definately a legitimate starting PG, and he's still improving.

I liked what Steve Blake was doing in Washington, and although he's riding the bench in Milwaukee at the moment, I still think he can be pretty good. Nice shot, decent defense, and he's not a complete bonehead when it comes to running an offense.

Sean May's been getting some hype as well this year, but I've been a fan of his for a while, and he's proving to be starting caliber for the Bobcats right now.

Blatche will be lucky to do anything for the next while. I had a higher opinion of him as well a while back, but having seen him play in limited minutes, he's just completely clueless and raw, and doesn't seem to have any basketball-related skills whatsoever. The only thing he has going for him is his frame.

Only one game but from what I understand that is the purpose of this thread, to hype your picks when they do well.

First nba start 18 pts, 5 boards, 2 assists and a steal on 6/12 shooting and 3/6 from 3. Looking good, he will get pt at the 2 instead of the 1 but ill take it...

Actually, we've had a few youngsters who've become good players but have moved on, Chauncey Billups being the most notable. Our problem isn't that our players never reach their full potential. It's that we can't seem to hold onto the ones who are capable of doing so, and so they reach their full potential elsewhere.

Y'all will be hearing about Jamar Smith, Brian Randle, and Warren Carter, Brian Carlwell soon. Maybe even Shaun Pruitt will get noise.

For the NBA:

KYLE LOWRY Kid is going to be a star. I wanted him more than Marcus Williams for the Nets and still do. Guy is going to be GREAT.

Other college stars I'd put money on:
Hansbrough (I think Da KO King already mentioned him)
Brandan Wright
Marcus Williams on Zona
Grevis Vasquez
Brandon Rush
Julian Wright
Al Horford
Durant (but he's everyone's lovechild right now)

HS Players:
Derrick Rose --but like Durant, everyone is already on that boat
Eric Gordon -- he dicked my school, but he will be a star

It's much harder for a gaurd to break out because that's a deeper position, so there are a lot of gaurds who if they got traded could have break out years. Big men just take longer to develop, so their breaking out is usually less about minutes then just getting better. My picks:

Travis Diener, Orlando Magic: Good player, absolutely dominated in summer league. Was a fantastic college player, can shoot, slash, create for his team mates. Offensively is a really complete player, defensively he is small but still does an okay job IMO. If he ever get's a chance he will be a very solid starter.

Daniel Ewing, LA Clippers: He probably wouldn't be a starter but I think he would be an excellent small shooting gaurd. A guy who can come in and just score, a very poor man's Ben Gordon, but more under control.

Carlos Delfino, Detroit Pistons: Not as sure about this guy as I am about the others. He is more talented but something seems to be holding him back, part of it is both coaches hated him for some reason. But the real problem is he is only an okay offensive player, and a so-so shooter, which for an international player is unusual. He is also not a spectacular slasher, just a good one. What he is good at is defense, rebounding, and finding his teammates. If he finds a coach he appreciates a good defensive shooting gaurd who is also a well rounded player then he will break out.

Willie Green, Philadelphia 76ers: Not as undersized as people think. This guy is a big 6'4" and built like a tank. He is a decent defender and scorer, if he can accept being a role player and not a big time scorer he will have a solid career.

Ike Diogu, Goldenstate Warriors: This guy has been forgotten this year but if he goes to a team that needs a powerforward he will break out. I really can't understand why he isn't getting minutes this year.

I said I would bump this a year later. Good read.
Obviously I'd say that there were a few gimme's (Durant, Oden) and a few calls that were based on hype (Daniel Gibson, check date), but fun making predictions and seeing if it haunts you in the future.

PS, that call on Daequan Cook still stands for me. Called that while he was getting his feet wet in the NCAA.

Quinton? No I think he will be on the level of Kenyon Martin in his prime. An explosive player that blocks alot of shots. I hope they slip.

Tyrese Rice is a phenomenal shooter who can fill it up quick. Word on campus is that he can really throw it down as well. Haven't seen him play yet but will soon when school starts back. We could use him on the Celtics if they decide not to re-sign Eddie House.

Ty Lawson is just a phenomenal player. He does it all. He takes his time and think before he delivers on any play and I think he will be a star.

That is some severe level of optimism. Deron Washington is very athletic and a good defender, but his offense comprises of just dominating inferior, less talented players. He's erratic, he plays out of control, and is just a spectacle of athleticism. He has a shot at being a good NBA defender, but as far as Kenyon Martin? Even if he bulked up he won't be at Kenyon's level.

That is his teammate Derrick Rose because Douglas Roberts has been projected as a top 15th pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. ( Maybe we can trade Shannon Brown plus some cash to be able to move in the draft charts)

http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-mock-draft/2008/

According to the mock draft if the season ends today the Cavaliers will have the chance to draft Serge Ibaka an international prospect from Congo, who is currently playing in the Spanish League.

If the Cavs were to look at anyone to draft for next year, it should be DJ Augustin. Not CDR, who plays the same position as LeBron and I don't think could effectively play off him.

DJ has a poor shot, but he's the up-tempo push the ball type of player with amazing speed that would work well with LeBron. He isn't the greatest play maker, but more than adequate.

No clue where LeBron will go but having his Nike contract double in value is far more enticing than running with Chris Douglas-Roberts.

I think he could be a Sean Williams type player with K-Mart's explosiveness. I hope he continues to get underrated though and slips to the second round so the Celtics can possibly snag him.

Sean Williams? Have you seen Deron play? Kenyon Martin? He's a swingman with a poor shot, poor handles. Washington is what, 6-6, 6-7? He's not going to be a PF in the league. His best bet is a small forward with a shoot guard's frame. Like I said, Quinton Ross would be a good comparison for him.

Well I appreciate Deron's play. It's nice to see, but his athleticism and energy gets him by in college. Like a poor man's Hakim Warrick. I just don't see any of his offensive skills that will translate into the NBA. Defensive, yes. But offensive, not unless he's playing with a premier point guard to catch lobs from. If he proves me wrong, so be it..but I just don't see him being more than a good to great defender.
