I was walking to work the other day and I exhaled my cig smoke over my shoulder, directly into the face of a middle aged woman riding her bike. She started coughing and I got out a quick sorry, which she just laughed at. That was awkward.
G'luck on your mission. What's your history? Lifetime smoker? How much do you smoke?
I'm only smoking a pack per week - as dictated by a strict self-enforced rule of only buying on Saturdays - so I still feel like I can quit whenever I want. I did for about three weeks back in early December. I'm a young smoker though, so I'm still enjoying the pros much more than I'm weighing the cons. I'm sure there will be a gradual shift over my life and eventually I'll convince myself to give it up. The limits I set for myself are really helpful though, and stop me from absentmindedly going overboard.

why? You can't run away from your friend forever. You have to deal with it.
The thing is people restarted smoking after years.
I guy who worked with me (he is 50 years old and stopped at 30 years) told me that sometimes he still thinks of having a cigarette... after 20 years...I don't. I smoked from about 19-25, been 10ish months since I stopped, never think about it now.

Good luck, personally, I haven't thought about quitting. I smoke around 2 packs a day, and yes, I'm another person who enjoys coffee with cigarettes. Probably drink a dozen cups of coffee a day, and that may be a conservative estimate. :oldlol:
But quitting can be tough, I've seen it a lot with other people.

good luck man.
i smoked my first cig when i was 14 and smoked pretty steadily from the ages of 16-24.
quitting cold turkey worked for me. i got really sick for about 2 weeks and just flat out didn't want one so that helped me jump start the process. i also started getting in shape as i quit. started mountain biking as much as i could and started to really embrace the fact that my breathing and stamina were improving on longer rides.
i'd really advise you to immerse yourself in physical activity as that's when you can reap tangible benefits and it just feels great. keeps giving you a better outlook on the whole quitting process.
the hardest part for me was going out to bars and just drinking in general. the smoking ban here doesn't go into effect for another year here, so almost every bar here is inundated with smoke. i had to learn to be around smoke and want a cig so bad, but not have one. then i had to learn to like this self-deprivation in an almost masochistic sense. you always feel like a million bucks when you wake up the next morning and know you made it through the night, completely wasted, and didn't have a smoke.
that said it's been 4 years and 4 months since i've had a cig and although the times i want a cig are fewer and farther between, i still get the itch and recent studies show that just one freaking cigarette can have detrimental effects on your dna.

+1 for the physical activity, if you can get focused on a healthy hobby it will be easier to take your mind away from the idea of smoking

Good luck, I hope you make it.
I've been thinking of quitting myself lately. I did quit once before, a few years back. It was ultimately unsuccessful but I managed to stay off them for a good 10 months or so before buying a pack one day during a moment of weakness. That time I had initially used the patch (first month or so only, I didn't do the "steps") and it did help a lot.
Keep us posted on your success. Maybe it will help motivate me to give another go at it too. =)

Before I actually stopped, I first cut down on the ritual smoking. No cig when first waking up, no cig after a meal, no cig before bed, etc. This got me down to probably 4-5 per day.
Around that point I told everybody I knew that I had quit, and was forced to smoke when nobody else was around. And I couldn't reek of smoke either. Anyway, eventually I was down to just one or two per day whenever I could sneak them at which point stopping was easy.
One other thing I did was always keep cigarettes in the house, for months after I quit. The strongest ingrained behavior for me was buying cigarettes when I didn't have any. If the thought occurred to me that I had no cigarettes, muscle memory kicked in and 20 minutes later I was 3 into a new pack. Crazy stuff.

i hear ya
i'm down to 2 cigarettes a day
only thing keeping me from smoking more is that it costs 10$ a pack here in canada for decent quality
havent found a great reason to quit yet, my friend even offered a bet if i could quit he'd pay me 1000 + vacation but i'd have to pay double if i failed

I quit smoking a couple of months ago, and I'm doing pretty fine. Hope you do well.
For me quitting smoking was relatively easy. It was deciding to quit smoking which was hard for me. And I think that's it, to realize that quitting implies never smoking again, knowing that if you do, your pride will be forever hurt by admitting you are failing.
Honestly, once I was decided and actually quit, the only time I miss smoking badly is when I take a sh*t and at parties after getting drunk.
One thing that helped me is buying a water pipe (I casually got it before quitting). I realized I was uncapable of studying a night without smoking. The water pipe has stepped in, and my life without cigs has been good.
*should have added this: I have smoked for 11 years, been a heavy smoker for 6 years. I started by reducing the cigs before quitting, but before that I had been smoking a pac per two days.

right on.. it's just cool to see how much $ you're saving and everything.
I actually opened up a separate savings "tobacco$" account. And I actually got addicted to saving money for a while. It was crazy. I never have had that before. Within 8 months I had several thousand (for real) and bought a truck.
If I was still smoking I would not have my truck. That's a fact. The more money I saw going into that account the more I wanted to put in. It really was a different feeling for me.
Quitnet has lots of support there. I've spent a little time in the chat rooms there and the people are supportive. There is also "expert chats" like quiting classes that you can partake in. I really mostly just liked the stats it provided.
You can set it to automatically e-mail you your stats everyday or every week or whatever..
I hope you quit dude..

just smoked my last cigarette... My quit time just started.
Good luck.
I smoked, very casually, while in college. Never did get a hook in me, which I'm thankful for.
BUT...and this is for all the smokers out there...I ended up with a rare genetic deficiency that resulted in a rapidly progressing form of emphysema.
Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency. Usually not detected until mid-life (I was in my 30's). http://alpha1.org/
I went from running hoops with guys half my age to on oxygen, 24/7, in the space of about 5 years.
You have no idea what it's like when your lungs are shutting down. Imagine the most out of breath you've ever been...the scary out of breath...and think about having that desperate need for air all the time. Slowly walking across a room. Bending over. Sitting.
I ended up having a double lung transplant after nearly dying, and am in great health now. My chest hurts ever day from where they sawed through my sternum and wired it back together. I have to take 30 pills a day to guard against rejection, which can h=appen at any time.
Oh, smokers? If you get that sick, they usually won't give you a transplant. Odds of you slipping back into smoking are too high. At best you'll get one lung, which isn't much of an improvement.
I spent my first 25-30 years of life basically ignoring advice given to me. Was pretty sure I knew everything anyway. But if you listen to only one thing in your life, listen to this.
Don't smoke. If you do, quit TODAY.
Good luck! Don't let anyone convince you it's too hard or not worth it. And whatever works for you is the right way to do it.

I think it's when people like you realize that smoking pretty much controls your life, you decide it's time to quit.
Schedules have to be planned around when you can take a break for a smoke. Plus smokers use cigarettes as an excuse not to work. Smokers=less efficient.

Its funny that your idea of "revenge on society" is f*cking with some over-defensive trolling alternate account on an internet message board.
Calling me a nerd and inferring that i was picked on in highschool??? Man now that really insults me to the core.
You and I both know this is true, and that it really stricked to your heart.
So please, dont pretend to take it all smoothly. Or at least learn to lie and take some acting lessons.
On another side note, anybody noticed BankShot is like the easiest poster to rile-up in this boards? Only takes couple of words to get him started. :oldlol:
At least DW has a bit more of "i dont care what u say" attitude.

1.) stricked??? :facepalm
2.) Again, its sad that you think "nerd" and inferring being unpopular in highschool is an insult.
3.) It seems as though you are the one getting riled up. Why so butt-hurt???
Now go ahead and run along, son.

Is there a particular reason you're so overwhelmingy butt-hurt, or is this just truly who you are??

Cold turkey isn't the way to go. I chain smoked from 14-24. Then I decided to quit slowly. Instead of 2 packs a day, I cut it down to 1 pack and then just replace the moments when I usually smoke with something else like coffee, a banana, an apple, or water. Cause part of the problem is habit, not just a chemical addiction. After a while I smoked less and less. Took around 6 months before I didn't smoke at all anymore. I also cut out drinking/going to the bar for a while cause I tended to smoke when I drank. So for about a year I didn't drink.

Different methods work for different people.
For me it was either cut it out completely, or nothing. I couldn't "quit slowly" and phase it out of my life.

yep, I also had great success going cold turkey. Haven touched a ciggie in 11 years at this point and have no desire to ever again.

pretty crazy how much it costs a person to smoke...
1 week = $50
$200 a month bill to smell like dog shit on the way to aquiring cancer...
anyone could use an extra $200 a month...that is half a payment on a new car...a nice car too...

The cost is the biggest reason I never became a smoker. Cancer doesn't scare me away but no way am I going to spend $50/week lol.

yep its nuts. Hate coming home smelling like smoke (studies now show that even 3rd hand smoke -being exposed to a person's smokey clothes/hair - increases cancer risk) from a bar or show.

Glad that I don't smoke. I need my lungs for the sports and activities I enjoy doing.
It's a good feeling being in damn good shape too...This.
Never been a smoker. I don't think I could if I wanted too. Any time I ever do, its ok, but the taste. Ugh, my mouth taste like shit for the rest of the day, and I hate that. Maybe I was just smoking crappy cigs, but I can't bear that smoking taste in my mouth all day. I don't understand how people can smoke a pack or more in a day or whatever. Shit personally blows my mind indeed.
The most I ever smoked in a day was two cigs I think, and I don't think I will ever go over that for the rest of my life.

People dont smoke for the taste, they smoke because they are addicted to nicotine

They have to get addicted to it at first. Youre not addicted after one puff. Im pretty sure people think it makes them look cool at first.
Anyways good, luck its all in the mind.

I quit a while ago.
I have been vaping for close to 2 years. I don't even vape all that much now, its much better tan smoking. If anyone decided to go that route, dont buy the crap at the mall, a blu, greensmoke or any of the heavily advertized crap... because it's crap.

Well, when I started I bought a 510 standard, and that was too weak. Thats when I just said hell with it and built my own box mod. Since then I have bought and built all kinds of models, partly because I became the expert in my circle(bought stuff to help friends and family).
If you're just starting, get an eGo or Riva kit. liberty-flights.com has the best price for a starter kit. Riva-lite is what they call it, and I believe the coupon code is "ECF". I am in no way affiliated or loyal to liberty flights, their juices aren't too great, but the starter kit prices rock.
I also recommend that you don't buy juices that taste like a cig. The PV(personal vaporizer, I hate the term ecig) is really nothing like a cigarette. It will quench every nicotine craving, and the oral fixation beautifully, but it's stupid to NOT ween yourself off the ashtray flavor while you're making your break for it.

Exactly how I am, the way i limit myself even more is I only smoke when im driving, so usually ill only have 2-5 cigs a day.

Quitting smoking is easy as f*ck if you do it the right way. Quitting cold turkey is impossibly hard but if you have the right mentality it is easier by a factor of 1milliontrillion. I quit this summer and havent even touched a single cig yet I drink and smoke up all the time
dont even try to quit through any other method, you will never quit permanently unless you understand the psychology of nicotine addiction, this shit takes an afternoon to read and it saves you a lifetime of cig addiction. just google the title of the book and the word pdf and then download this shit

I smoked for 6 years. I've tried to quit a few times before but failed. I read the book because i was curious about it and heard good things. I became a non-smoker after reading that book. I recommend it to anybody who wants to quit.
Book pretty much explains why cold turkey is the best way to quit. using patches or gum or weaning just prolongs the agony. You won't stop having cravings until all the nicotine is out of your system. It takes three weeks for your body to completely flush it out. After that point quitting is a breeze. During that first 2 weeks or so I was a real ashole though.
