Just saw on twitter that it's gonna be Blake Griffin, Javale McGee, Serge Ibaka, and Brandon Jennings.

Griffin is clearly the favourite (although I think he's much more of an in-game dunker), but Brandon Jennings will surprise alot of people. He used to absolutely fly in high school.

He needs to replace Serge Ibaka.

I pick 6'0" Brandon Jennings to win the Dunk contest.

im sorry but power dunkers in the dunk contest are boring as hell to me.

the only thing they ever do that looks cool is assault the rim but its just not that impressive when a big dude crushes it with nobody guarding him.

other than that they have no creativity and are forced to use stupid props to win (see idiotic Superman dunk that wasnt even a dunk)

never mind you are just as likely to end up with a Birdman-like performance when you pick an in game dunker.

I cant see Griffin losing

But howewer it should be definitely fun, Mcgee is here for dumshits, Jennings is the small flying guy there is always one in the dunk contest, and i dont know what Ibaka is doing???

And should there be another one like last year dunk-off? Hopefully not Nate

Lebron bi*ched out again :rant

Lebron, like Wade, probably don't wanna risk injury since the team is contending for the championship. I'd rather he win the playoffs than the dunk contest. No hard feelings for Lebron.

Look at the other contestants, Wizard, Clippers, OKC, Bucks. Lol of course they have the time for dunk contest looking at the team their from.

risk injury from jumping a few times with no one guarding you?
any of their breakaway dunks have a higher chance of injury.

injury or resting should not be an excuse. its 20 mins, just jumping and dunking. lebron is just scared of embarassment and letdown, that's all.

I love how people talk about dunk contests all year and who should be in it. Then like a month before the contest start saying how the dunk contest hasn't been good since 2000. Why do you people hype something up that you know isnt going to live up to your expectations?

I am personally a fan of McGee's unique dunking style. His freakishly weird build yields some pretty unique dunks. I'm glad he's in. I'm more worried about Brandon Jennings and Serge Ibaka. I would have much preferred, say, Westbrook and Rose (or Terrence Williams and Terrico White).

I have to admit to not knowing Jennings' true dunking resume, only the clips I've seen posted in this thread. I'm impressed by the between-the-legs finish, but he did not seem to complete it emphatically enough to make me think "Man, what else could he do?!" Instead, I got the feeling that was about as extreme as he's going to get.

In Serge Ibaka's case, I love his game dunks and that clip from Spain that was posted showcased his length, but he appears pretty pedestrian. Again, Ibaka and Jennings are kind of unknowns for me, but the early evidence isn't insanely promising.

McGee on the other hand, alluding to his previous unique style (LeBron23 posted some of these links earlier), is an intriguing choice for me. I acknowledge he appears to make a flurry of questionable decisions, but I think that has overshadowed some real dunking, new-era Larry Nance type of stuff.

I agree with you there. I keep getting this feeling the NBA has some sort of weird protocol to filling out their dunk contestants. Brandon Jennings seems to fulfill their yearly "small guy" contestant. Like I said before, I'd really like to see Derrick Rose, Terrence Williams, Terrico White (who's injured right this moment) or Russell Westbrook. The way they gather contestants has always been a mystery.

I say this every year, but even as recently as 2000, we the viewers were treated to six contestants who each had 3 first round dunks. Three finalists would then have two dunks a piece in the finals. Quick math would tell us that's 24 dunks.

Today, we have four contestants performing two dunks a piece in round one and two finalists dunking twice in the finals. That's a total of 12 dunks which is, yes, half of the total from just 10 years ago. Can we have a great dunk contest with just 12 dunks? Absolutely. But what happens when a couple of contestants crap out and miss half their dunks?

Well, in the year 2000, when Larry Hughes and Jerry Stackhouse were thoroughly unimpressive, there were enough other dunkers and dunks to overshadow their shortcomings (this was the year of VC, T-Mac, Steve Francis and Ricky Davis). In 2010, when Shannon Brown and Gerald Wallace struggled, the cupboard was bare. We were left with one fresh face (DeMar DeRozan) and a player we'd already grown tired of three years earlier (Nate Robinson).

The fact that the 2010 NBA Dunk Contest was the worst in history was not a coincidence. With the way the contest has transformed over the past decade, it has been set up to fail. We're giving less players less dunks and expecting a show greater than anything that's come before. On top of everything else, there are players being rejected from the dunk contest (Joe Alexander, Russell Westbrook in '08) who want to be in.

The NBA is getting in the way of their own success here. The constant adjustments to fit timeslots or appeals to certain corners of the market have left us with a situation where every dunker (all four of them) have to give us the show of their lives in order to satisfy the masses.

Cool Story to share

Back home in the PBA, one of our burly forwards joined the dunk contest (no need to be voted in) and used two of his teammates to dunk on. :facepalm After the dunk he proceeded to stick his jersey out a-la Kobe while running around the court. :facepalm That got him to the finals.

On the finals, he took another team's center beneath the rim so he could cram it to his face. But instead of just jumping straight up, the guy actually tried to block him, and he did a reverse layup.

The hilarity of the situation caused me to forget if he won or not.

I agree, who makes these decisions? As a Thunder fan I can tell you, Serge Ibaka has hops, but he has never done a dunk that had any kind of style. He'd be a better prop to be under the basket trying to block everybody. That's what he does best.

Brandon Jennings? He's currently out with a foot injury. They say he should be back in time, but I can't imagine anybody in the Milwaukee organization, including himself, would want him competing in a dunk contest just returning from a foot injury.

Blake Griffin and Javale McGee I had no problem with. Don't let the fact he is a dunce blind you to his hops. He has a legit chance.

But like someone said, Westbrook has been trynig to be in it since his rookie yr and his in game dunk resume really suggest he has something for us. And especially if he gets snubbed for the big game, it'd be a great consolation prize. Joe Alexander wanted to be in, submitted a video of himself touching the rim with his head to warmup before practice, and everybody voted in Rudy Fernandez instead. Terrico White, maybe the league feels like he doesn't get enough pt or do it in games so I can live with that omission. But why no Sonny Weems? Derrick Rose? Hell, James Harden I have seen dunk between the legs and some nice stuff.

I believe the league just calls dudes and tells them they have to be in it.

Lebron won't even entertain the thought of being in the slam dunk contest. He's just afraid that he might lose to Griffin & lose his ego as a star. Griffin would just dominate Lebron in this contest, Lebron is only good with fast break dunks.

Why would the NBA do this? Not denying that these guys can dunk well, but when you're 6'10, and 7', your dunks just look so much worse because you're already so close to the rim. Think about all the best dunk contests in history. All of them were almost completely guards or small forwards. The classic duel between Jordan and Wilkins, Carter against McGrady and Francis, etc etc. They seem to think that just because Dwight won it once, athletic big men are what draw views. Ibaka and Mcgee? Griffin is tall, but he needs to be there, and Jennings is like the Spud Webb/Nate Robinson, of the contest. But McGee and Ibaka? I mean sure they're nice dunkers, but they're not contest worthy at all. Derrick Rose should definitely be in there, along with a nice swingman like Gay or Derozan.

McGee will win simply because his long ass arms will make dunks look stupid crazy. Not only can he jump, but he's like 7'1. He needs to do some crazy FT line dunk we haven't seen before. Griffin is cool but what cool dunks has he done? All I see are in-game alley-oops and tip dunks. I think he's gonna be like Shannon Brown. Hyped to no end but no real creativity...just a shitload of hops and good hands.

LeBron would be cool but at this point, I don't even care anymore. If he's worried about getting injured, then I understand. If he's worried about losing, that's lame. No one is going to remember the dunk contest anyway...

BTW...the title still remains in Seattle:pimp:

This might be the worst collection of slam dunk participant's ever. Griffin is the only reason to watch this.

Very nice post. Repped.

A chance for McGee to embarrass himself even more..

I mean seriously why this guy? He barely gets off the ground, he just has a long wingspan

No hops...yeh right.

He's the most fluid 7 footer in the league. His dunks look natural for a big guy. A guy like Dwight is mechanical compared to him.

Brandon Jennings in definitely an underdog. He hardly ever dunks in games which could actually be good because that means hes not only an in-game dunker.

If you look at a guy like Nate Robinson he is not much of an in-game dunker either but if you put him in an open gym he can throw down between the leg dunks.

After seeing all these highlights of Jennings on Youtube of him dunking I think he can actually put up some good dunks in this Slam Dunk Contest.

they need to do something like an And1 showcase or whatever dunk artists there are out there go up against some NBA guys.

The NBA is not going to allow some street ballers or whoever come and try to show up the NBA players in this kind of spotlight. Never gonna happen.

Beneath both legs?

That's why dunk contests are getting played out. It's to the point where the delivery is more exciting than the dunk sometimes.

Too many big men. No need to put Ibaka in there. So no SF/SG in a dunk contest...whack.

In all honesty, I thought we were at that point ten years ago, and I know I wasn't alone in the sentiment. I was super amped when I found Vince Carter was going to participate in the return of the NBA Dunk Contest but I truly, seriously was expecting just a really emphatic 360 dunk and maybe a double clutch reverse of some kind.

In 2000, some of the dunks we know so well now - the clockwise, cuff, 360, windmill; the elbow in the rim slam - were largely never even imagined. Further, we were two year removed from Kobe Bryant walking away with the last slam dunk trophy by running and dunking between his legs. At that point, simply dunking between the legs was hard enough. There weren't a lot of people who imagined variations were possible (starting with VC's bounce between-the-legs). The two handed free throw line dunk had us all out of our seats; we'd been waiting on the day and we thought it had arrived, but as we know Vince fell a little short.

I guess my point is, sometimes seeing is not only believing, but also realizing. That old VC 360 was mindnumbing at the time. It was a dunk that people had never even conjured up in their wildest dreams. Similarly, on the elbow dunk, I was going out of my mind in the milliseconds it took for him to approach the rim. I kept saying, "He's approaching awful slow, reaching back with one hand, is he throwing the contest? Is he out of dunks? A routine one hander in the finals?" Then obviously he was left dangling from the rim by his elbow, another scenario I'd never even imagined.

Innovators will innovate. It's what the greatest do. It won't come from the guys in the contest just to be in the contest. It'll come from the true dunking artists; the ones willing to expand their minds.

In my own mind, here are a few we haven't seen on the NBA stage:
-(as someone else mentioned) Between Both Legs
-540
-Terrence Stansbury helicopter 360 from the free throw line
-A rock the cradle beginning from the right wing that ends with one hand reverse on the other side of the rim (not beginning from the baseline and not like Dr. J's two hand reverse version).
-Two Elbows
-Shoulder
-Double Dunk (dunk once, catch, dunk again)
-Legitimate Rim Kiss or Head Butt
-Double Windmill??
-Double Between the Legs
-Alley oop to using elbow to force ball into rim (instead of hand)
-Between the legs from the right wing to cuffed "cradle" finish
-360 Between the legs to Elbow
-Tomahawk slam off bounce (like Steve Francis' "He touched his ainkowls ladies and gentlemen" dunk) where a player really swings the ball down to their ankles in mid flight

I'm sure we could keep that list going and a lot of those, obviously, are just variations of dunks we already know (though really, so was Vince's 360. It was a hybrid of dunks we already knew: cuff, windmill and 360. Sometimes hybrids can still stun). However, I'd never count out the chance that someone comes in and pulls another Vince at some point, performing dunks previously never imagined.

I agree with you and Big Skinny. He had another oddly unique dunk last night. It surely wasn't insane but there's just something inherently interesting about his finishes (likely has to do with his seemingly 14'6'' wingspan). Unlike many other blessed seven footers, McGee uses his wingspan for the greater good. He had a reverse dunk opportunity on a breakaway last night and decided to switch to partial 360 at the last second.

Thankfully, a high I.Q. is not required to participate successfully in a dunk contest (see J.R. Rider). And personally, I think a dunk contest is where someone with a mindset and willingness to attempt in-game free throw line dunks and defender clearing finishes from 14 feet away might actually benefit and thrive. Optimistic look: he pushes boundaries.

McGee doesn't really look like he has anything that special. The only cool dunk I saw was the one where he dunked and also used his teeth. That's a very creative dunk. Dunk Contests these days have to be creative and that's the only way it becomes exciting. No props were used in last years slam dunk contest.

I didn't know that Jennings can dunk that good until I saw videos from this thread.

There's tons of dunks that have been done, but never in an NBA dunk contest. Here's Team FLight Brothers with 19, and even they left tons of their own out. Furthermore, these dudes are from 5'8 to 6'5 being the tallest one, Special FX. He went to to Rutger's, once cut his head on a dunk attempt
