What are the best 2011 TV shows?
Talking about all current shows that put out new episodes.
Name your favorites, and say what's good about each one. And maybe if it isn't obvious, name the type of show it is (drama, sitcom, etc.)
My top favorites (24, Lost, etc.) all ended in the last year or two. Not sure I have actual top favorites anymore.

I like House, as Gregory House himself reminds me of myself, dry, witty perverted, a genius. Na, who am I kidding  I think he is a great character though, and I still enjoy watching the show even though I think season 7 hasn't been as good as the older seasons.

I loved the finale to season 6 but I haven't watched any of season 7.
Ill be waiting patiently for season 5 of Mad Men but other than that ill only catch an episode here and there of other shows.

Shows I've seen everything of and are currently still playing:
Supernatural- This season isn't QUITE on the level of seasons 1-5 in terms of good story. But the acting is still as good as it ever was. The actors all have great chemistry for each other and it is really a pleasure to watch. Although the premise of the show is drama/action-adventure, they do a FANTASTIC job of doing comedy. They do a great job of knowing how to balance the comedy in and some episodes are straight-up hilarious. Lots of great one liners. HIGHLY recommend.
Vampire Diaries- I'll get a lot of shit for this one, but this season, I think it is really good. A lot of shit is happening each episode and they aren't *****-footing around by drawing stuff out. It's a drama with some action. Not nearly as bad/lame/cheesy as Twilight, but not nearly as grotesque/in-your-face as True Blood. It's a happy medium for me. There are some comedic moments, primarily from three of the characters this season and some good one liners from one in particular.
Shows I'm catching up on:
Mad Men- I think this show deserves every bit of hype that it gets. It is so well done and acted. It's a drama with understated humor. Donald Draper, the main character, is a beast.
Dexter- Eh, it's good. Quality acting, solid storyline, but just not really drawing me in like it does pretty much everybody else. To be fair, I am only finishing up season 1 and I heard it gets much more in depth and intriguing. I think Dexter is an interesting character, but the show just doesn't do a whole lot for me. When I'm watching, I enjoy it.

Yeah Lights Out debuted last night on FX and it got good reviews. I checked it out and it has good potential. Wouldn't put it ahead of other FX originals just yet, but it's up there already.

Weeds meandered all over the place last season. It seemed like they didn't really know where to go with it but the season finale was one of my favourites things I watched last year. It gives me hope that this show will end (if the rumours are true) on a very high note next season. I will still be watching it every week.
Fringe continues this year and I really enjoy that show.
Fringe is tons of fun. It's like a goofier version of the X-Files but it works because the characters are just so damn likable. Fringe also churns out some great standalone episodes that have no relation to the main story arc. They rarely feel like filler.

Glad to see another fan of Parks and Rec up in here. So many people watched the first couple episodes when it first started (myself included) and thought it was unfunny and just trying to be like The Office.
Little did we know that it really didn't take off until the last two episodes of the first season, followed by a hilarious second season.
Can't wait for next week when Season Three starts.

I'm interested in that FX show Lights Out. They have some good shows so one about boxing should be good.
Also Sportsdome looks awesome! The first episode was what I've been looking for in a sports satire show. Hope it gets a lot of play.
But at the end of the day there are two shows that I'm very excited for. Two good middle aged shows. (By season count)

Prison Break: LOVED IT! Best show out of all that I've watched so far, AMAZING.
Currently on:
Dexter: Season 3
24: Season 3
Friday Night Lights: Season 3 I LOVE this show btw. idk if its only me or if it was popular when it was out but I its a great show. Much better than most other HS drama shows like Degrassi and stuff.

Loved Prison Break and Sons Of Anarchy
and 24.. those are some of the best shows..

Just watched Rome season 1. (5 years old but pretty good.)
But about season 3 of 24. Your statement makes me want to continue and finish all seasons. I saw seasons 1 and 2 and then just watched the last two seasons (7 & 8 was it?) Anyway figuring I am done with it and that I watch too much other stuff..then I read your post..if this is true then I have to go on to season 3 and 4 and 5. . .

With 24 a lot depends on how you watch them too. If you watch them as they are on week to week sometimes it's not as good as when you can just watch the entire season in a couple days.

BREAKING BAD - i think this is the best show i've ever seen. each season gets better and better. i was in love with dexter until i found this and it makes dexter look contrived and corny whereas i always thought it was edgy and clever. season 3 of breaking bad was ridiculous! season 4 won't air till this june or july though. they just started shooting yesterday from what i've read...
still though, best show on tv and an all time classic imo.

Yeah I just started the other night, and watched the first two episodes of the first season.

Yeah, I would say the same, but after seeing season four there's no way anyone in their right mind would have stopped. That said, next season might be the finale so there's no way I'd stop watching at this point either. Dexter's still a great series and by most other shows' standards, last season was still average. It was just way too choppy and the storylines weren't very well concluded throughout the season

On season 1 finale of V...I hated it when I first saw it. But I figured there is something deeper about it so I watched the first season. It's pretty good...I mean everything sucks after watching LOST (Breaking Bad/Sopranos/Mad Men are good though) but it's entertaining.
Some ideas are great...political/media manipulation, Anna's "Bliss", psychology of human emotions, not to mention the "5th Column" (If you watch you know what I'm talking about)...Enough entertainment to watch. Get past the fact that they eat meat and it's a decent show.
I'm going to go through The Event probably tomorrow.

I wasn't gonna post in here cause it's already way too deep a thread.
But I've gotten pretty well hooked on all of the Showtime Sunday night stuff. HBO sorta blew it. They advertised the hell outta that Game of Thrones, but they never really gave out enough info to let me know enough to really get hooked on it. Then they gave Showtime an extra week, maybe two, to get a head start on them.
Anyway, I just jumped into Californication last year. I saw a few episodes in season one, but lost touch, then just sort of picked it up outta the blew on an off last season. But I got into it enough to want to check out this year. So far it's been good enough that I don't want to stop. All the gratuitous nudity and sexual stuff is enough to keep watching, but the content is there too. So far I'd say it much better than last year even.
Episodes I saw commercials for here and there, but since it's in the following time slot, I gave it a shot, and I think it's great. It's got that droll british humor, along with the british sense of social discomfort in comedy. It's been really great. LeBlanc is a perfect fit. And getting him to play this extreme dipshit version of himself is fantastic. I don't know if just anyone would even be willing to do it. (Who is the guy who plays Merc by the way? I think he was Paul Riser's friend Ira on Mad About You, but I feel like I'm recognizing his voice more than his face, but that hairline rings a bell as well).
And finally, Shameless, which was Showtime's new flagship apparently this winter season. They advertised this thing into the ground. Macy as the go to face of the show, and young and gorgeous Emmy Rossum as the new face. So far I'm a little torn on it. Rossum's character is on the one hand overly responsible and grounded. And while I understand her thirst for a wild side considering what she's been saddled with, it's hard for me to buy the relationship they've got her in. She just met this guy and she's way to opened up to him. I actually had to watch the pilot a second time to see if I missed something, like an implied jump in time, or their having some kind of preexisting relationship. But there's nothing there. And the brother's discovering the other brother sexuality seemed like a big drop on the pilot. Episode two got a little stranger even, with Macy hooking up with the son's girlfriend's mother. The whole thing is a little over the top. But to be fair, I feel like a big ensemble piece like this requires a few weeks to get itself set up. It's had some funny moments so far. And I can hang on just with the quality of Macy's work (which has been really good so far), and the fact that Emmy Rossum is incredibly likeable. She's got that magic mix of seeming exceptionally hot, yet somehow accessible.
I would suggest Episodes to anyone at the moment. Get into it early on now. Especially if you have a taste for that quirky british comic sensiblility, and comedy that makes your spine tingle due to the uncomfortable spots it puts it's characters in. If you're a fan of either Office, you'll more than likely dig this.

And then the dude is already doing stuff crazy enough to potentially end the relationship....all in two episodes. lol
I agree it's moving too fast, but I am hoping it settles down. The family dynamic is good enough to watch for me.....but c'mon you're trying to tell me, in the second episode, new boyfriend is already driving the dad into another country? WTF? lol

Yeah, this character has the potential to ruin this show. I suppose he's there as a motivator, to get things happening that need to be resolved. He's like a walking act B. But the character makes no sense. He's too timid to approach a girl at a bar, but he makes his living as a car thief? He obviously craves the big time, yet he has no qualms slumming it and helping this girl with her disfunctional family. The whole character contradicts itself all the time. And then he comes off smug too boot.
This seems like it could've worked well as just an ensemble chacacter study of an entire family, but instead it feels like they decided something "needed to happen".
I still have hope. But I'm losing it as I've watched the first few episodes more than once. I'll keep watching if for no other reason than I'll be watching the two lead ins every week anyway. I really love Episodes so far.

Modern Family is the best, sort of straight forward take on the good old fashioned American sitcom in I don't even know how long. It's a really great show. It's obviously lifted a few mechanics (like the asides to camera, clearly from The Office), but it makes them all work. The circular plots are about as good as have been around since Seinfeld. And it actually makes and non-continuous story work. You can really start watching it cold and not have any problems. It's a great show (I really feel like Phil Dunphy carries it for stretches, he's one of my favorite characters on TV at the moment, but both Mitchell and his husband have great stretches too).
I'll take this space to make my sleeper outrageous call of the day: As of right of this moment, I'd rather nail Clair than Sophia Vergera. There ... I said it. Clair is smoking hot, fiesty, and just does it for me. And Sophia is more my type traditionally, but Clair does it for me.

I've never watched any of the AMC stuff either (other than The Walking Dead). I tried to get into Breaking Bad right in the middle of it's run. Something like Season three I just tried to jump into. But I couldn't do it. It's not like I hadn't done that before. I did that with Lost actually.
Mad Men too I'd love to try, but it's too late now. I'll have to go with DVDs, or in syndication down the line I guess.
I've said this before, but for all the good work AMC does, they do a horrible job advertising their shows, I have no idea what night they're on. And they don't reair stuff nearly enough. I remember when episode one of The Walking Dead came on, I missed it, and had to wait a full week to catch it again. You're trying to kick off a new series, you need viewers to get hooked, to see the first episode, you should be running that as often as possible that first week. Instead you get airings of The Wraith with Charlie Sheen. Both Mad Men and Breaking Bad predate my having a DVR too.
For anyone thats looking for great T.V. Breaking Bad and Mad Men are the best shows currently on television.. And Boardwalk Empire..

Are you against watching anything on your computer? That's how I watch 99% of my TV. Download each episode in 1080p HD.
You could actually run a connection from your PC to your TV and watch in HD like that if you wanted to. All three seasons of Breaking Bad should be available in HD, seasons 3-5 of Mad Men, most of LOST, etc.

ZeN...I will definitely get to these shows that I have NEVER even seen one episode but I know are good from multiple recommendations....
Mad Men
Breaking Bad
Dexter
House
The Sopranos
LOST
never seen nothing of any of these shows..
I've actually been getting into mini series very much in the last year or so..
the whole Sopranos thing I somehow missed but I intend to watch it..
But first things first this weekend finish the last 2 episodes of ROME season2 and then start DeadWood (<--- never seen
My question ZeN (and whoever) is which of the 6 at the top should I start with (after DeadWood) or better yet put them in order 1 - 6 of and maybe a one or two word description beside each one.. (saying violent or very enjoyable or alot of drama or whatever it was that you got out of that particular series..)
Thanks in advance..

With the top 3 to 4 its basically a toss up.. but if I were to just throw up a list, it would be:
1. The Sopranos
2. Mad Men
3. Breaking Bad
4. LOST
5. House
6. Dexter
thats kind of random tho.. I think watching order should be based on your personal interests. If you are very much into serial killer Dexter would be number one.. So theres a fluctuation from person to person.

and by the way..have you seen DeadWood and if yes..

I can't speak on most of those, as I haven't seen them. I've seen a few episodes of House, and while it's a pretty entertaining show, I don't see it as something you have to bury through season after season. Although my father would disagree. He loves that show.
As I said, I haven't seen Mad Men or Breaking Bad.
The other three however. I went on a splurge a couple winters ago. I picked up the entire Sopranoes series on DVD, and watched the whole thing over the course of about a month. Probably 3 episodes a night. I was a fan during it's run. Never missed an episode. I have to admit, as highlly as I regarded it during it's run, I actually liked it more watching it in bulk (I'm finding that's the case with a lot of shows like this). One of the main gripes people had with the show was it's open endedness on issues. Things would come up, and seemingly get resolved off camera. It wasn't an issue for me, but "the missing russian" for example, drove people crazy. But what I found was that knowing what was coming, and not always waiting for what was gonna be next, allowed me to enjoy it a lot more.
It's got some dead spots. It's weird how isolated season one feels. It's great, but you can tell that it was written as a movie screenplay. It's got a few filler episodes, and it wasn't supposed to sprawl the way it eventually does. They did the best the could when Nancy Marchant, who played Tony's mother, died, but it's some weird stuff to watch now. And of course the last season with the Gay New England getaway, which actually didn't bother me in content, but more so in it's soaking up time away from the real story. But overall, it's a brilliant show. Beautifully done in the way it's written, acted for the most part, and probably the most consistently well shot show ever.
If it's not the most consistently well shot show ever, then that award would go to Lost. That's watchable as a travel documentary it looks so good in HD. Another show that feels like the writers had a story arch that they wanted to use, and basically got asked/bribed to stretch it out. So there's some stuff that feels a little disjointed in there. But again, a great show, well worth your time.
And Dexter I love. But it's easily the worst of these shows. I posted consistently in the Dexter threads the past few years. I really do enjoy it. But I like to think I'm discerning enough to know that it's a notch below the other stuff. It's got a great writing format. A major story arch every year, with these almost mini-arcs where Dexter takes out his urges on other scumbags, that allow you a glimpse into interesting side characters, and further insite into Dexter. The problem with the show is that the supporting characters are sketches at best. Micheal C. Hall is great in the lead. And his real life ex wife/fictional sister/coworker, is pretty good. But after that, the characters are thin, or sometimes outright bad. It'll be easy to get hooked if you watch, because season one and two are great. But season three (I believe that's the Jimy Smits season) is dreadfull. It bounces back with the season with Lithgowe, but even that is missing some of the mystery that made the first season so great.
I'll throw out The Wire too, if you haven't seen it. I watched that after the Sopranoes those few winters ago. I'd tried to get into it when it was airing originally, but couldn't get through the language issues, and the cast was too big for me to latch onto. But in the short viewing on DVD, the show is brilliant, and may be the best show of all time.
I'd like to see Deadwood as well. Never saw an episode. I lost my illegal cable hook up just when it came out, and it was a few years before I got HBO again. But I've hear great stuff.

I was going to sign up for Netflix until I found out you can't choose what quality you want to stream. Awful.

I'd go so far as to say you should start with The Wire. And I know I'm not the only one who'll suggest that. It's that good. I'm not as crazy about the last few seasons as most. But the first couple are brilliant. A lot of people dislike season two though, but based on how I watched it, I think it may be the best one.
The Wire is a must see

2 shows that I started watching recently:
Storage Wars: Decent show. It follows 4-5 professional buyers who go around bidding on storage units that have been abandoned by their owners (or simply owners who didn't pay their fees). There's enough of an interesting mix of personalities and mystery to keep me interested, but I don't know for how long.
Beyond Scared Straight: Good show. A bunch of at-risk kids aged from 11-18 are brought into a prison and are shown what prison life is like. Inmates that are involved in the program get in their faces, intimidate them, show them around the prison, share their stories of how they got convicted and try to persuade them from not ending up like them. At the end, they give updates about the kids who were brought in.

Anyone been watching Lights Out on FX? That show got off to an awesome start, yet there's no buzz.

I watched the first season of supernatural than it gets pretty boring and they are running out of ideas
Season 1 and 2 are very similar in that they are myth-of-the-week eps more than advancing the story, yes. But there is still more growing in season 2 (especially with Sam). However, from season 3 on, it is verrrrrrrrrry serialized episode-to-episode. Much more story oriented and the whole season revolves around a big story that is progressed from ep to ep. The first 5 seasons were planned out prior to the show starting. So they certainly weren't running out of ideas. The show was built on the premise of the Supernatural, so they can't even really run out of ideas because there is so much mythology out there and they utilize it well.

Entourage is just an easy watch. Lots of stuff in that show that dudes just enjoy. It's only half an hour so doesn't take much time.
Breaking Bad is a hook. That show reels you in and you can't stop. Prepare to commit a lot of time if you start trying to catch up on that one

Breaking Bad is one of the best ongoing series right now. You have to check it out. Catch up on it before the next season starts later this year.
As for Spartacus, if sex and gore bothers you, I would avoid it at all cost. Blood and Sand was really was a great season, so check that out AFTER Breaking Bad.

I'd like to add that this second season of Archer that just started is riotously funny. I love Archer. So accessible too. You can just jump right in, there's not a ton of ongoing story for you to know. Basically, Archer is James Bond, his mother runs the Spy Agency he works for, his ex-girlfriend also works there as a spy, and she's recently split up with the company accountant. It's horribly inappropriate, and funny pretty much all the time. It's on FX on Thursday nights. Two episodes in a row, the new one, and last weeks.
A few clips.
Kenny Loggins Danger Zone montage.

Yup, pretty good show, my recommendation.
I watched 2 seasons in just a few days, addictive ****
Nina is beautiful and Damon is badass/entertaining.
