Lawsuit: Taco Bell Ground Beef Is Really Just "Meat Filling"
http://consumerist.com/tacobellbeefy.jpg
MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - What's in a name? That's the question at the heart of a class action lawsuit Montgomery, Alabama law firm Beasley Allen filed targeting fast food giant Taco Bell. The lawsuit claims the company uses "false advertising" on its menu and in its advertisements.
WSFA 12 News contacted the Taco Bell Corporation for a response to the lawsuit. Company spokesman Rob Poetsch issued this statement::
"Taco Bell prides itself on serving high quality Mexican inspired food with great value. We're happy that the millions of customers we serve every week agree. We deny our advertising is misleading in any way and we intend to vigorously defend the suit.
"The complaint alleges that what Taco Bell calls "beef" doesn't meet the minimum requirements set by the USDA to be called "beef" or "seasoned ground beef" or anything of the kind.
"Rather than beef, these food items are actually made with a substance known as "taco meat filling," according to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit states that Taco Bell should refer to its product as "taco meat filling" because it contains mostly "extenders" and other non-meat substances.
What are these substances? The document lists water, "Isolated Oat Product," wheat oats, soy lecithin, maltodrextrin, anti-dusting agent, autolyzed yeast extract, modified corn starch and sodium phosphate as well as beef and seasonings.
The USDA defines "beef" as "flesh of cattle."
The definition as read in the lawsuit states "Ground beef" "shall consist of chopped fresh and/or frozen beef with or without seasoning and without the addition of beef fat as such, shall not contain more than 30 percent fat, and shall not contain added water, phosphates, binders, or extenders."
The USDA policy book requires food labeled as "taco filling" to contain "at least 40 percent fresh meat," and the label must show the true product name.
In containers shipped to Taco Bell stores, not seen by consumers, the label reads: "Taco Meat Filling."
Beasley Allen law firm adds that what Taco Bell is marketing as beef only contains 36% meat.

there are a few fast food places that I now refues to go to in my old age, lol
Taco Bell is one of them...
yeah that stuff was kinda good when I was like 21...now I find it completely uneatable, and that food makes me feel AWFUL after I eat it...
I will eat a few things at Taco Bueno still though...but it is rare
I also refuse Burger King...YUCK...that new burger they show on TV with cheese and peppers IN THE MEAT?...YUCK...why not just use a slice of cheese and actual peppers?...gotta trick it up all silly to remind us it isn't real food?
Jack in the Box is another...although I think I could find a few things on that menu I could eat...I actually used to like their tacos even though they are mush dipping in grease...
for the most part I now try to avoid fast food at all costs...it is a last resort for me...

I buy ground beef from the grocery store, which is probably not the great, I understand...but it isn't "grade D" beef that fast food joints use either...
Bell and those other places use the cheapest worst possible ingrediants they can use without it being just flat out "illegal"...

It's not only about the food being crap, it's about them charging you for inferior products.
They could serve you healthy food but they don't care about you in the least bit they sell you crap.

Well for one grocery stores will never be targeted as the source of poisoning. Usually the manufacturer or distributor will since that manufacturer will be sold at multiple stores.
Taco bell however is going to be the only site of poisoning which is why they'll get the name for it.
And taco bell probably dishes out more pounds of beef a day then your grocery store does a year.

What i am telling you is that those chemicals at those low concentrations are not found harmful. So i don't understand why you keep coming back to them... I do not think the government should do anything, smaller government is better IMO. I think if people are old enough to buy food on their own, they are old enough to decide what's good for them. Why should the government have to make laws to guide people? IF you think the food is bad, don't eat it. There shouldn't be laws to prohibit those that think it's fine from eating it...

This is very true. It takes about a month for the a average persons taste buds to adjust back to eating healthy foodfood. Artificial flavoring gets people hooked on junk food, is the main reason people over eat, and even makes healthy food less satisfying.
So many times I've had fast food and felt horrible afterwards. I've never felt bad after a good salad or home made spaghetti. No one overate in the 50's. Things taste too good today because of all the artificial ingredients.

One should know where they are eating. When i say smaller = better government, i dont mean no government at all like some people. I think the FDA is fine how it is now. The only law i would make is besides nutritional facts being available, include ingredients. The FDA does look over the food that restaurant sell. They've deemed the nitrates and phosphates found in taco bell consumable.

is this surprising? of all the fast food chains, taco bell probably has the most questionable meat. it's a mixture of additives, preservatives, water and random meat. i'm pretty sure even mcdonald's nuggets have sodium phosphate and other things to plump up the chicken and make it look like there's more meat.
i try to avoid taco bell, eat there like once a month. i still need to cut back on my other fast food eating like jack in the box. 24 hours + one block away from me = not a good combo. consumable doesn't mean healthy. if you're looking for healthy food at a fast food restaurant outside a baked potato or salad, good luck finding many options. it is what it is.

I think they need to have stricter standards.
NO way companies should be able to sell us 40% of what we pay for and still be able to call it that substance.
The carcinogens in our water, food, and plastics are unacceptable.
I mean if you're going to regulate, tax, and jail us citizens for bs then you have to hold corporations to those same standards.

We're drifting away from the topic. The fact is, one is capable of finding the ignredients of certain products sold at franchises like taco bell online. So it is their decision whether they should eat there or not. Why should there be laws/regulations prohibiting those that accept it and are willing to eat there? I mean the food served there meets FDA standards. Sure it *Might* not have been termed right, but it is consumable none-the-less.

When you sell food which I have to pay tax on the tax, imo, is for things of this nature.
I should not have to have the internet to know whether or not your food is poisoning me.

You see, there is this huge thing about healthy eating, but what a lot of people don't understand is not everyone lives their lives that way. People eat healthy so they live longer, but i've learned there are different approaches to life (I am a Ph.D. Student @ USC). There are people who live to enjoy life now, and that includes eating the foods they love, even if they are not healthy. And i share part of that approach.
What i don't want is to see places like taco bell become like cereal... where taste is sacrificed for vitamins and all kinds of nutrients which usually gives someone more than they need.
Like i've said, fast food is fast food. Each person that buys something from taco bell should know what they're putting in themselves.

THE NEXT TIME YOU GO INTO A FAST FOOD PLACE...look around at the type of human beings standing in line...for the most part the fat and unattractive, probably very low income...or teenagers...
THEN...go into a place that sells "health food"...it will have fit females in workout gear, men is suits getting a "power lunch"...ect...a higher class of human being...ones that are living better lives IN GENERAL
just sayin...

Exactly. The funny thing is 'healthy' eaters always act like they eat stuff that tastes just as good all of the time but i highly doubt that unless they're cooking 1+ hour long dinners every night. Same with vegans who act like their food tastes good without eating meat, and how its mental. Thats a load of baloney. Wings, pizza, bacon cheese fries, hot dogs, MushrromnSwiss from McDonalds, Whoppers, Taco Bell tacos, KFC chicken, chinese buffets ALL tastes a lot better than healthy stuff.

how do you do your home made taco shells? Thats my biggest problem since my homemade Ortega shells are too crispy(slight oven bake) where i like how the Taco Bell shells sort of blend with the taco more, and taste more cohesive together. To me Taco Bell hard tacos are the standard for hard shell tacos.
Even if everything i make home made tastes fresher imo its not always the best tasting because its fresher. Its like describing Chipotle Burritos to some local places where theirs taste fresher but not necessarily better as the total Burrito package.
And have you ever had a Baja Fresh taco? they taste terrible. Their shrimp is the worst but i've had their beef and chicken as well. I'm not a big fan of avocado either so thats another reason i don't like them. I've had a lot of local mexican food from restaurants and their hard tacos aren't better than taco bells.

yeah, if you buy a bag of masa de harina (basically a fine corn meal treated with lime) and mix up a dough with water (directions on the bag, its just water and the masa), you can make great corn tortillas. press them out (a tortilla press is best and cheap, but not necc.) and then deep fry them for hard shells or just finish them on a hot griddle for soft shells.
much better for you than flour tortillas (which have lots of lard).

Can't remember the last time I had taco bell. Their ground beef is most definitely not ground beef and my homemade tacos easily outdo taco bell tacos. Not even comparable. Buy some ground beef from H-E-B and grab a pack of fresh flour tortillas with pico de gayo, cheese and salsa. The only thing I really have to do is cook the ground beef, season it and heat up the tortillas on a griddle. I can buy pre-made pico, salsa and mixed cheese. Pour yourself a glass of milk to add to it.
Corn tortillas are nasty unless they're straight from Mexico. Flour all the way for me.
I understand the convenience of taco bell as a college student. Trust me I do. There's gotta be better mexican food around the campus though...Chipotle? Freebirds? Qdoba? Those are way tastier and healthier options.

Dec 09 they stated some interesting facts about beef we normally think of as BEEF
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/31/us/31meat.html
My father is long gone , but he was a butcher. He showed me how to pick out good meat.
Also he stated the meat we buy is typically regional meat , which means it came from your state or neighboring state.
---------
Times have changed ... sine late 80's , early 90's more issues with meat have hit all regions of the Nation for one simple reason :
The processing of the animal usually isn't always from your state or neighboring state but processed from centrally located spots in the country and shipped EVERY WHERE. That means if there was issues with cows or a plant in one state , it would no longer be just that region or state affected , but could be dispersed in multiple locations with in the country.
----------
Most processed meat for franchise (fast food) are willing and able to use less quality cuts of meat , instead of shoulders and rumps of an animal , the cuts of meat are coming from the heads and other gross places of the animal , years ago would not be tolerated.
They are then cleaned (AMMONIA) and then processed for the consumer.
Next time when your under the sink , think about that ammonia and how it's used

UPDATED STATEMENT REGARDING CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT - January 26, 2011
"The lawsuit is bogus and filled with completely inaccurate facts. Our beef is 100% USDA inspected, just like the quality beef you would buy in a supermarket and prepare in your home. It then is slow-cooked and simmered with proprietary seasonings and spices to provide Taco Bell's signature taste and texture. Our seasoned beef recipe contains 88% quality USDA-inspected beef and 12% seasonings, spices, water and other ingredients that provide taste, texture and moisture. The lawyers got their facts wrong. We take this attack on our quality very seriously and plan to take legal action against them for making false statements about our products. There is no basis in fact or reality for this suit and we will vigorously defend the quality of our products from frivolous and misleading claims such as this."
What is in Taco Bell's recipe for seasoned beef?
"We're cooking with a proprietary recipe to give our seasoned beef flavor and texture, just like you would with any recipe you cook at home.
For example, when you make chili, meatloaf or meatballs, you add your own recipe of seasoning and spices to give the beef flavor and texture, otherwise, it would taste just like unseasoned ground beef. We do the same thing with our recipe for seasoned beef.
Our recipe for seasoned beef includes ingredients you'd find in your home or in the supermarket aisle today:

know what's funny? back in high school, in one of those "get-to-know-eachother" things on the first day of class, the teacher had us say our name, a hobby, and what our last meal would be. me, being a taco bell fanatic, said taco bell. some dumbass kid turns around and goes "EW! taco bell?! they use grade D beef! that's what pigs eat!" so i replied, "if you throw anything at a pig, it'll eat it."
moral of the story is, i still love taco bell. don't people know what the 'chicken' from mcdonald's looks like uncooked?

Yeah. I love going to Taco Bell. I don't care if the it's only 36% beef in the fillings. Those tacos and burritos are freaking cheap. A college student like me doesn't need to spend 5-7 dollars for a meal. Sure it is not healthy, but it makes up for it because it's convenient and very cheap.
I think I eat there like twice a month, also McDonald about a few times also. Then there are times I go to Popeyes for their chickens which is about a dollar for two pieces on Tuesday and Thursday.

I know two people that have worked for them and they say that Purina sells meat to Taco Bell and Jack in the Box.
Still trying to find out for sure.
Urban legend.
Jack in the Box is owned by Ralston Purina though. :lol

Sounds yummy. I just had a full two servings when I went down on your mother last Tuesday.

i loved me some taco bell in highschool. rare to never eat it now that im older. but i do love me some cheesy gordita crunches and mexican pizzas. But southern california is filled with decent to good mexican food, so theres always an alternative when the mood strikes.

I like wining and dining like any adult, but sometimes I just need ghetto. I have no shame in admitting I eat at Taco Bell. I don't care.
To me all the beef taste the same in all of the meals.

is this surprising? of all the fast food chains, taco bell probably has the most questionable meat. it's a mixture of additives, preservatives, water and random meat. i'm pretty sure even mcdonald's nuggets have sodium phosphate and other things to plump up the chicken and make it look like there's more meat.
i try to avoid taco bell, eat there like once a month. i still need to cut back on my other fast food eating like jack in the box. 24 hours + one block away from me = not a good combo. consumable doesn't mean healthy. if you're looking for healthy food at a fast food restaurant outside a baked potato or salad, good luck finding many options. it is what it is.
I never understood why People get salads from fast food places. Iceburg lettuce+dressing and whatever other crap they throw on them =/= healthy. They're often more expensive than many of the other items on the menu too.

36% meat though.
Trust me, if you laid off the Taco Bell and processed foods for a few months and then went and tried some it would make you sick.
Stick to farmer's markets/raw foods/home cooked meals....it'll make you feel better in the long run.
I eat Taco Bell very seldomly, like maybe once in a few months and i don't get sick. like worst case is in and out diarrhea but when i think sick i think like food poisoning sick.
No offense but i honestly think health people overly dramatize the negatives of eating junk food. that is not to say it isn't bad for you but i just find the way health or fitness people talk about junk food extremely exaggerate how awful it is. like i'd probably consider fried foods way worse than eating a taco bell taco or tacos. even 35% meat and the other 65% being whatever, i just find that whatever effect on people being exaggerated considering most of it gets passed thru quick anyways.
if u eat tons of fast food yeah you're going to pay but if you eat every so often i just think some health/fitness people are so refined into healthy foods that they consider even a tiny bit godawful when its not so much...basically like fitness/health extremists.

I actually agree with this. Its not a big deal to eat a taco bell burrito once or twice a week presuming your diet is otherwise fairly healthy. Its just not.
However there are tons of nasty slobs in this country who eat nothing but that shit. And somehow their obesity is "the corporations" fault :facepalm

Del Taco beans are good because they cook them fresh every mourning. So bean burrito's are not as bad for you as you might think.
"Beans" are good for you ,but Taco joints(including Del Taco) have the beans loaded with sodium anyway.
I really like the stuff ,but gave it up & make my own at home occasionally so I can have a bit if control over ingredients ,sodium content,etc......

yeah i don't know why everyone thinks taco bell is gross. i think they taste like good tacos. only time they're sort of gross is if you eat them when they get sort of cold or soggy. home made tacos don't taste different really that i've noticed, i'd almost say taco bell tastes better since there is something weird about heated store bought taco shells but maybe thats just me...

Yeah, idk. People hype up Chipotle and I'd take Taco Bell over them any day.
