Your "top-4" has six players...and noticeably absent are Russell, the game's greatest winner, and Wilt, who was the game's most dominant player.

The top 10 or whatever is mainly opinion. Each of them probably contribute a great deal in their team success. If you believe that one player is better than the other, then that's fine. Many people believe Magic Johnson is the best player ever. Some Wilt. Some Russell. Some Jordan. Nothing is absolute. But if you try to convince other people that your top 5 or whatever is better than others, then show up with evidence and stuff to back it up.

usually grammar Nazi's drive me nuts, but I'm telling you this for your own sake:
If you learn the correct use of "there" "their" and "they're" people will take you much more seriously.

as for your list, I don't agree with you, but I respect you for thinking for yourself and not conforming to the conventional top 5.

I agree with you completely, but people like to believe that they know what is right and that everyone else is wrong.
The GOAT debate will always be based off of opinion, and honestly that is what makes basketball and its history so great. Everyone has once thought about a "what-if" type game where jordan/bird/russell/wilt/magic etc. played to settle the GOAT debate.

The fact that you put Shaq as co-number one invalidates the list. He wasn't even the consensus best player of the whole 00's (TD for me), and you put him over MJ? KAJ, sure, but Shaq??

Yeah im the same, I know there is no firm list but as a general idea Id say MJ,Wilt,Russell should be top 3... the rest of the 10 in no specific order im not too fussed. I dont understand anyone that puts Shaq, Bird or Magic over those 3 though:facepalm ....

Great post. I have seen some posters that rank both Bird and Hakeem over Wilt, which is truly laughable. And usually those same posters have Russell way down their lists, too. IMHO, Bird and Hakeem, while great players and probably top-10, are two of the most over-rated "great" players of all-time.

No one in the history of the NBA was as dominant as Shaq in the game of basketball. Suuure he couldn't shoot and he wasn't the best at any one thing but when Shaq was on the floor I remember teams having to put 4 people on him just to try and FAIL to stop him. Shaq ran over teams, there was no stopping him EVER, there was no method to get him out of his funk, if he was in that court it was not going to be an easy game for you.

I have said it before, but I really don't have a problem with Bird over either Kobe or Hakeem. But it is certainly debateable. Hakeem, while not as great in the regular season, was a better post-season player. And Kobe has been a part of five rings, and was a MUCH better scorer (especially in an era of lower scoring and FG%), and was a better defender. In any case, barring injury, and Kobe will go down as the greater player.

And Bird has NO CASE over Russell, MJ, Magic, Wilt, Kareem, Shaq, or Duncan.

The "clutch" Bird was actually considerably worse in his post-season career, and even worse in his five Finals. And even his 3pt shooting was over-rated in the post-season. He only shot .321 in the playoffs, and furthermore, he only made 80 three-pointers in 164 playoff games...or one every two games. I still recall 6-5 Michael Cooper giving him fits in their H2H finals, too.

You mean don't rate him until he retires? I kind of agree, also it would make it harder to list as well if we did that since we would have to fill his and Duncan's spot with other guys that might not get mentioned alot. Maybe Oscar and West?

Good explanations, I can't argue with them too much other than Kobe ending up greater. But again that is just speculating. As of now I would put Bird higher.

Calling Shaq the greatest ever is an absolute farce.

I don't think anyone else got to play for as many great coaches and stars as he did. He was a huge problem wherever he went and playing defense depended on how many touches of the ball he got.

And this guy is the guy who trumps all others?
