Didn't he get punked by Utah again in '98?
I guess he just didn't know how to utilize his awesome athletic powers to overwhelm those short Utah white guys.
Or maybe, just maybe it wasn't that easy to play against the Jazz.

Kobe at 18 year old kid back then, he was on his way to becoming the youngest All-Star in NBA history. When MJ was 18 he had to make sandwiches for Sam Perkins at North Carolina. :oldlol:
Hell, Kobe at 18 dropped 33 on Jordan and dunked on his azz...on Jordan's home court!
If Kobe was in his prime back then you don't think he would have destroyed a league full of JJ Redick's?

the only reason he got "punked" was because Del Harris limited his playing time....The Lakers had no one to make up for Shaq's Foul trouble's and poor freethrow shooting.
Kobe as a Starter was the main weapon in the 4th quarters and crunchtime...and helped lead the lakers in 00' 01' 02' (Yes 00' is just a few years later then 98')
and just a few years later MJ came back and shot 41% (In a much easier era...according to you.....surely MJ's expierience in a "tougher" era would let him shoot at least 50%?...right?)
( waits for it's ok to slight Kobe but how dare you say Jordan could'nt shoot 50% in the modern era)

Typical. Lakers looking less and less likely to win the title this year which would leave Kobe (like Magic) one shy of Jordan.
So let's bring up the "competition" argument AGAIN.
First it was the 80's that were far superior to the 90's. Now the 00's are superior as well. Gee, that couldn't have anything to do with the fact that the Lakers were very successful in the 80's and 00's but really didn't do much during the 90's.
Nah, couldn't be that.

His role on the Bulls was actually similar to Bynum on the Lakers ore Perkins on the Celtics.

Bynum is more talented than every center Jordan played with combined, let alone prime Shaq and Gasol.

How many years Kobe was the best player in nba? 3?
How many years Jordan was the best player in nba? 9-10?
Luc Longley is a "good center" in the way Oprah Winfrey could be a Victoria's Secret model.
Bynum is more talented
Longley is the best player ever from Australia. Don't know why your hating on him.
Bynum is obviously more talented.
However they had similar roles in their teams championship runs. They were the big bodies who defended and pushed around the big centers (Dwight, Perkins, young Shaq, Alonzo Mourning, Rik Smits, Ewing etc.)
They gave their teams a physical presence and allowed superior players (Pau, Rodman) to do different things while they took on the power post players for stretches- they fought for position, boxed them out, etc. That was their main role.
Longley was good for Chicago because he had a decent jumper which pulled bigs out and spread the floor for Jordan and Pippen. Bynum was good for LA because he gave them good defense and interior toughness and reliable hands for catching and finishing (valuable with Kobe and Odom play making).
Their value was similar. Bynum was more talented though.

This thread is yet more evidence (as if we needed any more) that Kobe fans are the lowest form of life on the internet. They'll do and say ANYTHING to make Kobe out to be better than he actually is, and to act like he's equal to or better than Jordan. It's a joke. Kobe is like 90% of Jordan prime vs. prime. Jordan would abuse Kobe in a playoff series (like 32/6.5/6/5/50% FG vs. 27-28/5.5/5.0/44% FG). Period.

The funny part is that it's not opinion at all. When one player dominated the league for a decade by every statistical measure and the other has never dominated anything, at all, ever, then that's not an opinion. Kobe fans want to act like it's all just opinions, but it really isn't. Fact is, Kobe hasn't done much to be mentioned in the same breath as Jordan. This is what Kobe fans want:

Kobe has never led the league even ONE TIME in ANY advanced statistical metric (PER, EFF, Win Shares, Player Wins etc.), and has only been top 3 in any of them twice. Jordan has led the league in EACH metric like 8-10+ times (save for EFF, which he led in "only" 5 times) and finished top 3 in these metrics literally DOZENS of times combined. This is in addition to being a better defender than Kobe could ever hope to be. So no, Kobe has done nothing to be mentioned alongside a player that DOMINANT.

If MVP actually went to the player who was deserving, or the best player Nash would have 0 and Kobe would have 3-4.
Funny that individual awards like MVP are only important/relevant when some moron is trying to trash another player. Especially Kobe.
I don't know why they are even mentioned. The object of the game is win and Kobe does that better than anyone in the league.

Jordan faced shorter defenders than what players like Kobe and LeBron see today. Best defenders on Jordan are generally considered to be:
Starks: 6-3
Dumars: 6-3
Payton: 6-2

He was able to back his shorter defender in the post and take advantage of that.
Today almost every team has a 6-8 or 6-9 swing man.
Here are some real ballers, many who are elite defenders and 20+ ppg scorers - these are the guys Kobe and LeBron face:
Kevin Durant 6''9
LeBron 6''9 (260 lbs)
J. Wright 6''9
T.Prince 6''9
A.Jamison 6'9
D.Granger 6''9
L.Deng 6''9
S. Battier 6''8
W.Chandler 6''8
B.Outlaw6''8
AK47 6''9
S.Marion 6''8
P. Pierce: 6''8
J. Posey 6''8
J.Johnson 6''8
A. Harrington 6''8
K.Martin 6''8
J. Smith: 6"9
S.Jackson 6''8
J. Hayes 6''8
A. Iguadala 6'8"
Carmelo 6''8
T. Sefolosha 6'7"
J. Green 6''8
C. Anderson 6"10
G. Wallace 6''8
B. Bowen 6''7
R. Artest: 6''7 (260 lbs)
Players are stronger and taller today- no doubt about it. Everything get's better with time.
In the modern era you have defensive specialists like Bruce Bowen, Ron Artest, Shane Battier, Rubben Patterson etc. who are supposed to be ''Kobe-stoppers''.
During Jordan's era the defensive specialists were guys like John Starks. The idea of Starks being a Jordan stopper is ridiculous . When you give up 4 inches and 30 pounds to someone who you'll guard in single coverage (for most the game) in the mid-range perimeter area, then those physical limitations will be almost impossible to overcome.
The 90s defense was 1 on 1 vs. shorter midget defenders in the post all day long on isolations.
Today nobody can even post up anymore - Duncan, KG, Shaq, Kobe they are all doubled after 1 or 2 dribbles at the most. Defensive schemes today are far more complex than they were 2-3 decades ago.

Kobe's defensive accolades are a sick joke. They're gifts. Kobe's defense has never had the impact of a first team defender. Hell, not even a 2nd team defender. Most nights he's a ghost on the defensive end. Since 2005 his defense has been average AT BEST. In 2007 his defensive rating was the same as Steve Nash and somehow he STILL made first team. Even Laker fans had a good laugh about it. Having Gasol and Bynum in the paint made him marginally better but he's still inconsistent as hell. The only time he really puts any effort in is during a nationally televised game. This year Kobe's defense has been average as well but he'll probably still end up on All-D first team for no good reason. Considering the accolades he has he's EASILY the most overrated defender of all time.

I saw a 37 yr old Payton shut kOBE DOWN when Payton was with Miami.. LOL
I am posting a video of the only time Kobe tried to guard MJ when he was 40.. Phil usually asked Rick Fox to defend mj cuz Rick was a better defender and he knew Mj would kill kobe with his bag of tricks.. Kobe was mad.. LOL

KG THOUGHT HE COULD GUARD A OLD MJ

Tmac ,Vc and Pierce all tried to defend Mj that season.. Mj had the ability to score on all of them...

He killed some of the best defenders at 40 .. What do you think he does at age 25 with the current rules.. Ron artest ,kobe, kg, patterson, and pierce could not guard Mj at 40.. Vince Carter a great athlete was never a good defender.. The only guy that I would love to see defend MJ is Bron and Mj would tear him up... Bron can defend but take a look at mj's first step.. Faster at age 40 than most in the league.. Kobe was all NBA defender and could not guard him..
Kenyon Martin got 45 pt on him by mj.. MJ woudl school current players even more cuz the lack of bigs waiting for him.. David Robinson, Hakeem and others all avg 4 blks a game back in their days cuz they could camp out in the paint... Nowadays you cannot do that.. It would be funny..
Allen Iverson put up 34 pts a game 45 percent shooting once the rules were changed.. Imagine MJ....

Jordan faced shorter defenders than what players like Kobe and LeBron see today. Best defenders on Jordan are generally considered to be:
Starks: 6-3
Dumars: 6-3
Payton: 6-2

I don't agree with the practice, but at least people are being consistent and doing the same thing to Jordan that many of his fans have done to the greats that preceded him. It was inevitable that Jordan's time would come, and his fans would have to defend him just as others came to the defense of other greats people attempted to diminish. People always attempt to tear down past greats in order to make their favorite player(s) look better. Because of course, people can't just appreciate greatness whenever it exists.

Problem is we have YOUTUBE to show the truth... Just click on one of the videos and watch MJ dominate his much younger conterparts..
Mj was actually smart in coming back.. I actually remember him dropping Vince Carter to the floor on one move... And he was about the best athlete in the NBA in 2002

I didn't know dominance was measured in PER, EFF, Win Shares etc. I thought it had to do with rings and winning in the playoffs? :confusedshrug:
what is this NBA championship thing they broadcast on ABC every June? let me guess you rather jack ur limp di@k to 82games than actually watch the games?
No, winning titles makes you great - it doesn't make you dominant. Dominance is individual; greatness is individual AND team-based. Kobe is great, but he's never been dominant - at least, not nearly to as great an extent as several other players (Jordan, Shaq, Wilt, KAJ etc.). Those guys were great AND dominant, and thus will always be superior to Kobe.
oh the horror
