NY Times reports:

A devastating tsunami hit the coast of northeast Japan on Friday in the aftermath of an 8.9 magnitude earthquake about 80 miles offshore, killing at least five people and injuring dozens. The earthquake triggered widespread power blackouts, and tsunami alerts were issued across the Pacific Ocean from Russia to Hawaii.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan said the disaster caused major damage across wide areas, The Associated Press reported. Mr. Kan added that nuclear power plants in the stricken area had not been affected.

Trains were shut down across central and northern Japan, including Tokyo, and air travel was severely disrupted. The government held an emergency session to coordinate response as three people were reported killed in the Ibaraki, Tochigi and Chiba prefectures, according to the Kyodo news service. At least 30 people were injured in the cities of Tokyo and Osaki.

The quake occurred at 2:46 p.m. Tokyo time and hit off Honshu, Japan’s most populous island. The quake was so powerful that buildings in central Tokyo, designed to withstand major earthquakes, swayed.

Okay, japan didn't have a 7.3 or 8.8 earthquake. Some place 100 miles off the coast had that. There is a difference...

this is unreal, if anyone think that a tsunami would look anything like it does in the movies watching the tsunami swallow miles of land on the coast in a matter of seconds its just incredible, CNN showed maybe thousands of people dying on the freeway in the houses the entire world just got a glimpse of its demise being swallowed up by our surrounding waters.

Tsunami hits Taiwan, no damage—weather bureau

Agence France-Presse

Filed Under: Asia Australia - East Asia, Disasters (general), Earthquake

TAIPEI – (UPDATE) Taiwanese authorities said Friday that minor tsunamis set off by a massive quake in Japan reached the island's coastline without causing any damage.

Waves around 10 centimeters (four inches) high hit Taiwan's east and northeast coasts in the evening, the central weather bureau said.

The bureau said it did not expect more and bigger waves but will only lift the warning when the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center does so.

Taiwan's central emergency response center told AFP that the waves had caused no damage.

Earlier on Friday, schools and offices in several coastal cities were closed while coast guards patrolled ports instructing fishermen to take shelter on land in preparation for the tsunamis, officials said.

Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou voiced concern over quake damage in Japan and pledged to send rescue teams if necessary.

"We need to stay vigilant. Disaster prevention is better than disaster relief," he told reporters.

Taiwan's foreign ministry issued a travel warning against four Japanese cities, as the death toll from the massive 8.9-magnitude quake reached 32, according to Japanese press reports.

The Bible is pretty clear on this and it says the following.

And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together. Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods. But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 24.

The time to seek for forgiveness and repent from your past sins is now, not tomorrow, the days keep going by the signs are clearer by each passing day, the Son of the Man is coming and you need to wake up from your sleep and realize these are all signs sent by God that His return is near.

God bless.

As dark as this sounds, I think we need to realize that this is a very LOW number for such a densely populated country as Japan and considering the magnitude of the earthquake/tsunamis that have hit. Japan's very well prepared for a disaster like this, I'd hate to imagine what this would have done to Haiti had their earthquake been this severe

I think that number is only from the drowning reports. Number will rise once they start cleaning out the rubble and wreckage. http://english.aljazeera.net/news/asia-pacific/2011/03/2011311607470826.html

Police said 200 to 300 bodies have been found in the northeastern coastal city of Sendai where hundreds of buildings have collapsed. Japan's NHK television said the victims appeared to have drowned

A ship carrying 100 people was swept away by the tsunami, Kyodo news agency reported.

Oh, no doubt. I was commenting on those numbers at that hour. It had been 6-7 hours (I believe) that had passed and for that amount of time, the couple hundred was as low an estimate as one could have hoped for.

Hopefully, the toll stays low. Like you said earlier, it shouldn't be as bad as Haiti since Japan is built and ready for this type of disaster.

It is said if the Moon's orbit is aligned with the Earth just right...
in the past.. this has and in the future... will result in causing one or more massive earthquakes.

And it just so happens this coming March 11, 2011 is going to be one of these times
one of those orbits between the Moon and Earth take place.

And, one rumor... already has it that a
California group of geologists are asking their cohorts not to taking any chances..
and - recommend that any
of their cohorts that are going to be caught in what might be called - the back country...
a few days before or after the date of March 11, 2011, be sure to have at least
three months of needed supplies with them.

That doesn't mean California is the place where a major Earthquake takes place on this date.
The most remembered event when this type of orbit took
place was in the middle of the Indian Ocean when a 9.2 earthquake hit December 26. 2004.
And, well over a quarter of a MILLION died caused by the terrible tsunami from the earthquake.

Now... that you're aware of the possible chances???????
Caution wise... will you take any special particular steps to prepare ahead of time...
In the event there could be massive earthquake in and or around your area?
Is there any advise you can share with others?

No none here in good ol' SD. just some 2-3 foot waves. Im really upset at automated phone calls and messages I have been receiving since 6 am. Woke me up talking about possible evacuations, and then i missed work because of this. Some of these companies need to stop this creation of mass-hysteria.

But they said a meltdown likely occurred.

i almost get the feeling some of you want the catastrophic meltdown.
1) It's not assured there is a meltdown.
2) A meltdown won't be Chernobyl style. By no means am i implying it's ok but they have a containment unit. It's not the same type of reactor.

Go watch some CNN or read up, listen to the people talking. What you are expecting is worst worst case even if meltdown occurs. It would be meltdown leading to X leading to Y leading to Z.

Nobody wants a catastrophic meltdown, that's not fair to say. It's just the topic of discussion because it's incredibly freightening and people want to know what the fall out will be.

Here's a good update from CNN if anyone wants to read it:

we live in a weird spoiled world where perversion has been banalized because of TV and internet. Some people do hope there will be a meltdown hoping it will give them something to think/care about for at least... a week.

There is something unhealthy in all of this. Most old, mature people can smell it. Also the way the medias, journalists are dealing with it, just look at your ****in screen...thes asshole have a hard time hiding their boners...

I went to Phuket, Thailand half a year after the tsunami hit (holidaying with parents). Even then, you could see beach houses in complete disarray, houses ripped from their foundations. I would say you should go if you want to see what a disaster is for yourself, it's a very chilling experience.

When you land, get food and water. Things you can just carry around. There are rolling supply issues that could be difficult to get around. Bring a bottle and fill in airport from fountain, etc.

Also remember there are rolling scheduled blackouts. Keep in mind if you set an alarm clock plugged in, something like that.

If you are west of Tokyo, things are not that affected at all.

Good luck and be safe.

Thanks. I've checked that flights are supposed to be on schedule (which was my biggest fear) so I think I will be able to make it there.

If something happens, I will be trapped in Dallas (where I change my plane).

I was considering opening a thread to keep people updated, but I still have to finish packing my stuff, and I'm not sure when I will have internet once I get off, so probably not worth it.

With this recent events, I'm buying some canned food and soap/ shampoo to bring with me. I had planned to spend a couple of days in Tokyo before moving south to see some people. Might have to head south directly from the airport though. Will only know once I get there.

I will be in Japan for the next 1-2 months. Kind of scary what awaits me there. Worst crisis since WWII and I'm heading there to work.

There seems to be little doubt about a meltdown being underway. However, nobody here is claiming it's Chernobyl pt. II, at least nobody I've read. That might or might not happen, depending on a number of variables. The Chernobyl reactor was old, poorly mantained and not designed to withstand 7.5 earthquakes like the one in Japan, but a core meltdown is a serious ****ing issue which could have catastrophic consequences if the molten radioactive fuel leaks out of the containment structure. And that doesn't seem to much of a strech to think, considering said material must be in the 1800-2000

They had one person on the japanese TV whose wife, 2 year old and 1 year old were all home (he thought) when the tsunami hit and he was working in another city. He was absolutely devastated. Turns out they decided to visit family further away and they just couldn't reach him through the chaos. It's funny how random life is.

The earthquake that struck Friday off the coast of Japan was so strong it moved the island of Honshu 8 feet to the east and sped up the Earth's rotation by 1.6 microseconds, making the day just a little shorter, scientists said. A microsecond is one-millionth of a second.

A preliminary study by the Italian Institute of Geology and Volcanology indicate the quake may have shifted the Earth's rotation axis by 3.937 inches, said Antonio Piersanti, researcher of the Rome-based institute, in an e-mailed statement Friday.
