Didn't they do this awhile ago? I remember Seinfeld and Chris Rock doing it with some other guys. Want to say Garry Shandling was there. And Robert Klein was in it and just a total doucher, tried to walk around the stage and do his act. I hate that dude.

By the way if you haven't heard, Mitch Hedberg's movie 'Los Enchiladas' has finally leaked online. I just watched it, some funny moments, very low budget. Mitch is in it, Dave Attell, Todd Barry.
It's like a cross between Clerks and that shitty movie Waiting. Worth checking out if you're a big Mitch fan.
Are your ports forwarded? I'm using Demonoid, no reason I should be going faster than you other than my ports being forwarded.
Not a huge fan, but I'll definitely download it.

I don't even know what port forwarding is. I'm dling with utorrent from the demonoid file. I just think my internet connection is slower.
Port forwarding is the single most important aspect of downloading torrents. It opens up your ports so you can connect to more seeders and leechers, thus, higher download speeds.
Figure out what your router is, and follow the steps after you select it from this (http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm) list.
You'll thank me later. Seriously.

i'm so excited for this. if HBO gave me free license to fund whatever project i wanted, this probably would have been it. i've been watching a ton of Louis stand up since that Rumsfeld interview was posted here. the guy is brilliant. i know i'll be in for a good time when Ricky fugging Gervais is who i want to hear from the least. lol
any of you have a Demonoid invite you might be able to hook a brudda up with? it'd be nice to be hooked up with a private torrent site again. i still remember losing my waffles account, shortly before my harddrive went to sh*t and i lost everything. sigh.
i'm downloading a piratebay file that i'm sure will be fine, and it hasn't been painfully slow. 63% after a little over an hour.

when you have utorrent open do you see a green checkmark on the bottom bar? if you do you don't have issues with port forwarding. if not follow pete's guide.
I remember like in 2005 i would have to open ports everytime I got a new computer or router or changed ISP etc. But now days I never have issues with ports anymore.

Watching it simply solidified my impressions of each comedian.
I find Jerry Seinfeld funny but hes a pompous snob.
Chris Rock is a savvy business man who understands that his stand up is key and his main income provider.
Louise C.K. is cerebral in his humor but doesn't act above it, or highbrow.
Ricky Gervais came off the most likable of the bunch and humble as hell. I love his questioning of working hard for laughs, while everyone else was shrugging it off as 'any laugh is a good laugh'... He seemed genuinely preoccupied with working hard in his craft and creating humor with longevity.

Nope, only stuff that was funny was them recalling some of their old stand-up bits. Nothing new.
Funniest part was the song title "Sitting on a **** cause I'm gay" :oldlol:
the show isnt a comedy routine.. its merely a 40 minute conversation about their experience of stand up comedy..
its good for what it is, just dont go into it searching for laughs.. its more like self-driven interviews..

I finally caught this last night. I thought it was great.
I love them all talking about each other's style's and presentations. Jerry did one of Louis' jokes, and they all agreed that he somehow made it Seinfeldian just in that quick retelling.
Louis' observation about how Rock literally continues to repeat, and flat out drill home the premise he's working on is totally his own mechanism, and it allows him to meander on topic because he makes damn sure the audience knows what the premise is.
And Ricky Gervais' comment about how Louis puts on this presentation that his life is really falling apart when he does the material, and it makes the jokes feel genuine. Then Jerry does the same joke and it feels like it's an observation he's making about someone else, because that's his mechanism. But the joke still works.
The part about staying in the bit was really insightfull.
I found it interesting how deferential they all were to Jerry, it seemed like because his material is so pure. He does observational stuff that can seem so mundane and everyday that it seems like they as comedians view it as almost he makes it work by being that much more technically proficient.
It was a great show. Funny and insightfull at the same time.
I like Ricky Gervais, but he came across as a **** in this show.
Especially that one moment where Seinfeld made a funny joke with "does he do the whistle?". Chris Rock and Louis CK start genuinely laughing and Ricky Gervais starts laughing only after he sees them laughing, but he laughs the loudest and totally makes the joke unfunny again.

Ricky is known for laughing like that, and I don't blame him. It was a moment of genius.
Thorpesaurous
04-25-2011, 12:25 PM
Yeah, I almost always feel like Ricky Gervais oversells stuff, but it's just his natural reaction, he's not really selling material. But because of that instinct, and the crowd he was with, there were a few moments when he was a little over the top.
Ricky also had some moments where he seemed to walk over some material.
Rock seemed like the blandest out of the group. But some of that may have just been him being defferential. And it's also pretty well known that he's a material student. He may not be as good off the cuff as some of these other guys.
The real genius of the "does he do the whistle" line, is that that whole bit is so far from who Jerry is as a comedian, yet he completely played into the bit, to the point where he ended up getting the best joke out of it, even though he never once got dirty with it.
I thought the stuff about his Superman Joke that had the F Word in it was a great observation about the use of cursing in comedy though. How even he admitted the joke didn't work as well without it. And even showing an understanding of why. And when he gets his riled up Jerry voice going, it's basically replacing points where swearing would normally be put it seems.

I'm not really a fan, but I think it's because I haven't liked the work his done on film, like his little run on the tail end of Scrubs. But I think my perception of the characters he seems to consistently play, which are almost always arrogant little pricks, tint my perception of his material.
Chappelle would be fascinating, but it would be hard to do one of these with him without things drifting toward his personal life.
Colin Quinn would interest me. I don't even find him that funny, although I do like him, but because of his now nearly 30 year run as something of a Patriarch to the NY comedy club scene, and his reputation as a real student, would make him good in conversation.
Norm would be great too. He did a podcast with Bill Simmons the week before his sports show came out, as part of his marketing run, and he was still droll and dry, but he was far more candid and real than his normal exageration of himself.
Larry David would be great to get that writers perspective.
Ray Ramano, who I'm not crazy about, can give you a similar story to script perspective.
Lettermen would be interesting, because he's done it as a standup, and from the other perspective of getting people a break. Carson too really but he's a bigger recluse than Letterman.

bringing guys like Billy Crystal or Bill Murray out of the woodworks would be awesome. Steve Martin could be great. as could Bob Sagat. Woody Allen? maybe not. Gervais was on the Daily Show doing rounds to publicize this special, and he and Jon seemed to come to an agreement to do another one. Dennis Leary and Stewart always have hysterical interviews together, so using those two would definitely up the chemistry. Chapelle is the obvious choice for the next 'token' black guy, though i suppose you could split it 50/50 between white and black. no Russell Peters please and thank you, that would suck suck suck.
i forgot that i haven't actually commented in this thread yet. i think i started writing a post when i was pretty drunk a night or two ago but never actually submitted anything. agreed with a lot of what thorpe and prof said, nice posts fellas. and also with ljj re: Gervais, of whom i'm not a huge fan anyway, but in this setting he came off as brutally phony. i enjoyed the slightest bit of tension in the air when Jerry called him out directly a few times, flat out disagreeing with what was said. not that any real tension is possible with these guys who are so skilled at cutting it away, but it was a wee bit noticeable. loved the joke deconstruction like everybody else, and the reminiscing back; first other funny person you met, first joke that really connected, first performance, etc. the reverence of jerry by the others was pretty weird, but he played right into it, as somewhat of a master of the art. which i suppose he is, if you buy into that pure observational crap. then again, i think the other half of comedy in its purest form is more situational, which is exactly what Louis has mastered more than anybody else. no coincidence that those two happen to be my favourite comics of the four. rock did get a little shunned, but he didn't seem too bothered by it.
i knew i'd love watching this and it didn't disappoint at all. brilliant stuff. i really hope there will be another one along similar lines.

I've often said that Jerry and Rock have a lot in common. Both do a very observational style of comedy, it's just that Jerry is Micro, on specific things, minutea, while Rock is more Macro, his observations are more on large social structure type stuff. But they both take those everyday observations that seem so obvious once they bring them op and just tweak your perception of them ever so slightly. Rock's obviously got a far more dramatic presentation, but in terms of the structure of their material, I find them somewhat similar to each other.
Eddie or Cosby would be cool. Cosby's gotten a little too grumpy in his old age. And Eddie may be a bit disconnected, but getting his perspective from back then would be awesome.
Richard Belzer is a guy I like, who could go back that 70s club golden age and he's still something of a student and structure specialist.
If you wanted to replace Ricky with another foreigner, I've always thought Eddie Izzard was really funny.

I saw this last night. I find it funny that gervais was over-analyzing the jokes and how comedians make people laugh. But i guess that is what the show was all about. Ricky didnt sound like a prick or fake in my opinion. I think he genuinely wants too know what other comedians think about an issue and at the same time wants them to know how he sees it from his own perspective. Out of the four, he seems like my kind of guy i want to have a drink with the most. But his laugh is kind of annoying though.

"but you're hardly kunta kinte, are you?"
that was great. one genuine moment pete? you're crazy. apart from the few stabs at jokes and bits, i thought the whole conversation was thoroughly authentic.
